Sox call up Carter
The Red Sox today called up outfielder/first baseman Chris Carter from Pawtucket to fill the void created by adding David Ortiz to the disabled list.
The 25-year-old Carter is batting .310 with 10 homers and 35 RBIs in 213 at bats for Triple A Pawtucket. He never has had a major league at-bat.
Carter came to the Red Sox in the Wily Mo Pena trade last season. He mainly played first base through his first three years in the minors, but he has logged most of his time in the outfield in 2008.
Here is tonight’s Red Sox lineup for their 7:05 p.m. game against the Rays.
1. Jacoby Ellsbury, LF
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. Kevin Youkilis, 1B
4. Manny Ramirez, DH
5. Mike Lowell, 3B
6. J.D. Drew, RF
7. Jason Varitek, C
8. Coco Crisp, CF
9. Julio Lugo, SS
P -- Justin Masterson

Hi Amalie-
Can you tell us whose roster spot Justin Masterson will be taking? I thought it would be Ortiz but it looks like they've called up Chris Carter to take Ortiz' spot.
Thanks.
Anyone believe in the SI back cover jinx? See this week's SI with J.Hamilton for explanation. Hint: Papi. Thank God Manny's locked in right now.
steve...pretty sure that masterson's spot was created from sending buchholz down
Wouldn't Brandon Moss, who I think is at least as good offensively and much better defensively, be a better call-up? Or is it just to give Carter a chance to prove he is ML material?
Why didn't the Sox call up Brandon Moss? I thought that's where they were headed.
David and Steve
If I'm not mistaken Masterson took Dice-K's spot as he is currently on the DL
Hope that helps
Jamey, I don't see what the SI cover jinx has to do with Papi. The last members of the Sox to be on the cover were Ellsbury and Buchholz and that was a March issue. Besides, in 2004 SI featured the Sox on the cover towards the end of the season and many wrote in to express anger at SI invoking their "jinx." How'd 2004 work out for the Sox?
