Sox matinee today

Posted by Steve Silva, Boston.com Staff June 18, 2008 10:09 AM

Today is a day to soak in the Celtics win, but the Red Sox have some unfinished business in Philadelphia this afternoon as they try to take the rubber game of a three-game set with the Phillies.

The Sox will send rookie Justin Masterson (3-1, 2.90 ERA) to the mound in 1:05 p.m. start. He'll be opposed by righthander Kyle Kendrick (6-2, 4.54 ERA).

The Red Sox are a major league best 6-2 (.750) in interleague play in 2008.

With the Celtics capturing their 17th NBA championship last night, it marks just the fourth time since the formation of the NBA in 1946 that one city been able to claim a World Series championship followed by an NBA crown in the span of 12 months:

1969-70 New York: Mets and the Knicks
1974-75 Oakland: A’s and the Warriors*
1981-82 Los Angeles: Dodgers and the Lakers
2007-08 Boston: Red Sox and the Celtics

*Warriors played NBA Finals at Cow Place in Daly City due to unavailability of Oakland
Coliseum.

The Globe's Nick Cafardo will be checking in a bit later with some pregame updates from Philadelphia and will be blogging live during the afternoon tilt.

Material from the Red Sox media relations department was used in this report.
