Suspensions for Sox

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff June 6, 2008 05:18 PM

Three Red Sox players have been suspended by Major League Baseball for their roles in last night's brawl against the Tampa Bay Rays. Coco Crisp has been suspended for 7 games, Jon Lester for 5 games, and Sean Casey for 3 games.

More to come.

  1. Why Lester? If the umpires felt he was throwing at anyone they would have tossed him anyways. If he got 5 games and Casey 3, then Gomes and Crawford will get 20 each. Just a prediction!

  1. If Coco gets 7, Gomes deserves 10

  1. This is ridiculous ... I can see Coco getting the 7 games but Lester & Casey? What were they supposed to do let the entire Rays team pummel Crisp? If those are the Sox suspensions, then Carl Crawford & Jonny Gomes should be gone for the year (yes YEAR) for the cheapshot hey-makers they were throwing.

  1. What the hell did Lester or Casey do? Casey has a reputation as the nicest guy in baseball and was trying to separate everyone. Lester pitched into the sixth, four innings beyond the brawl. He was over 100 pitches by the time he hit Iwamura and it was a breaking ball that barely got him. What a bunch of malarky!

  1. From tampabay.com:

"MLB came down hard on the Rays for Thursday's brawl, suspending James Shields for six games, Jonny Gomes and Edwin Jackson for fives games each, Carl Crawford for four games and Akinori Iwamura for three games."

  1. I have to admit that Coco deserves it. It was a pretty bush league to charge the mound.

  1. Lester and Casey. Good work MLB, you cowards. Maddon should have been suspended for the remainder of the year and Gomes and Crawford for at least that much. The Rays should be ashamed of themselves. Two months of decent baseball does not put them on a pedastal. Far from it. There is seriously something wrong with their coach who always feels his team is getting slighted or disrespected. Maybe it's just because they still are not a consistently good ballclub. Agitating and causing chgaos will not point them in the right direction. Coco certainly needs to be suspended but Lester and Casey? For what? Get a grip Watson you idiot.

  1. How can they suspend Lester when the Ump didn't even warn him.

Manny Should be suspended for 5 games for not even being out there to defend his teammate and another 5 for slapping Youkalis--Manny being Manny is not an excuse any more

  1. Were ant Tampa players suspended? If not, these suspensions seem a bit harsh.

  1. Seems like the only way other teams can be Boston teams is by accusation, distraction or suspension by provocation. I saw the game and I can only come to a single conclusion that the suspension of Crisp, Casey and Lester is a joke! MLB should be ashamed of themselves for such contrivance.

Maybe tomorrow they will try to make amends by saying the umpiring team screwed up and award Pedroia his Wednesday night home run.

  1. What did Lester and Casey do? I saw Casey but he was just trying to break up the fight, and i didnt even see Lester...

  1. I don't understand what Lester did to warrant a suspension. And I'm surprised DeMarlo Hale was not suspended for taking down Shields.

  1. Thanks Yankee Bob!!! Sticking it to the Sox once again.

  1. gomes who took lessons in cheapshiots 101 from mickey rivers should have gotten 10 games for whaling on an defenselss coco. And what did the mayor casey do to get 3 games and lester bob watson is an horsesass(and I apologize to horses)for even suspending lester who ht one batter with an off speed pitch.Typical yankee scumbag anyway he can stick it to the red sox watson will.Whats next wakefield getting suspended for hitting someone with an knuckleball?you can bet MLB will tell the red sox and tampon gay before the next series anymore crap and the managers will be suspended next

  1. I love how Yankee pitchers go head hunting and only get three games, but Lester throws a pitch near a guy and gets five. Yankee Bob Watson should invest in a few more pinstripe suits. And what exactly did Casey do? This is the nicest guy in baseball; if anything, he was probably breaking things up. Seems like a bunch of bs to me.

Posted by Nate Ploof June 6, 08 08:54 PM
  1. Okay, when one of the yankee rookies threw at the sox, they got a 3 game suspension reduced to 1... he didn't even miss a start

  1. What do you expect from former Yankee and Red Sox Hater Bob Watson. He's always had a bee up his butt with anything regarding the Red Sox.

Posted by DM June 6, 08 09:28 PM
  1. Lester threw at a batter after they were warned... it's not that complicated.

    GO RAYS

  1. Coco's a dumb thug.

Posted by Isherwood June 6, 08 11:37 PM
  1. Coco is the real POS here...he made a totally unnecessary hard slide into second and knew what was coming next. I have played baseball all my life, and have been a sox fan since the early 80's when I was old enough to watch...when you play the game, you know the reactions to you actions, and TAKE being hit like a man. Coco started this, and it should have ended with him getting hit by the pitch. What does he have to show for charging the mound??? A suspension, a black eye (figuraticelt and literally), and got his butt whooped on national replay for 2 days. Good work Coco, way to be a man!!!!!! What a joke

Posted by Dave June 7, 08 12:42 AM
  1. Why in god's name was Casey suspended? I mean really...what did he do, hes one of the nicest guys on the sox! He wasn't in that fight, he only restrained people!

Posted by i'll kill bud selig June 7, 08 08:49 AM
  1. I understand Caseys suspension, but I dont understand how Crawford can only get 1 game more..thats a bunch of bull. If you Tivo'ed the "brawl" Casey was one of the first Sox out there getting Coco's back. When I watched it I could'nt believe Casey was throwing punches. I was amazed, but it just tells you he is someone that will go to battle for/with his team. Crawford and Akinori Iwamura are the ones people should look at for there BUSH league tactics
