Jon Lester retired the first two batters he faced in the second but got into a jam by giving up three straight hits. First baseman Willy Aybar doubled, followed by DH Jonny Gomes's run-scoring single. Justin Ruggiano added a single before Lester escaped further trouble by getting Akinori Iwamura to fly to right.

The Red Sox lead, 3-1, after an inning and a half.
