Beckett on his game

Posted by Gordon Edes, Globe Staff July 19, 2008 05:20 PM

ANAHEIM -- Josh Beckett has allowed three singles through five innings as the Sox maintain a 2-0 lead. Chone Figgins led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on Casey Kotchman's flyball, but Maicer Izturis popped to third and Vladi Guerrero rolled to short.

No other Angels baserunner has advanced past first. After Beckett set down 10 in a row, Izturis singled with one out in the fourth, but was erased when Guerrero bounced into a double play, nicely started by rookie shortstop Jed Lowrie. Juan Rivera's roller to third turned into an infield hit when his shattered bat sailed toward third base, distracting Mike Lowell sufficiently for the ball to escape him.

Beckett has whiffed four and has not walked a batter.
