Big cheers

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff July 15, 2008 08:02 PM

Those to get big ovations from the Yankee Stadium crowd were...

The Yankees, of course. Mariano Rivera was the last of the non-starters to be announced. His was, by far, the biggest and longest. (Though Roy Halladay got a surprisingly nice ovation, as well.)

Getting not such big ovations?

That started with the boos for David Wright and Billy Wagner, and continued to the Red Sox on the team, as J.D. Drew. Jason Varitek, David Ortiz (who struck a fighting pose), and Jonathan Papelbon were announced.

  1. Can't help but notice that Winfield and Carter brought two different caps with them, yet Boggs wore the Yankees hat... at least he could have brought the D Rays cap...

Awesome New York... booing even Francona... Stay classy...

  1. Why was Wade Boggs wearing a Yankee hat? I thought he is in the Hall of Fame as a Red Sox?

  1. I would completely expect the reception the Sox got in Yankee Stadium at a regular season game. Or playoff game, if the Yankees ever make one again. But at this, the All-Star game, with the legendary players on the field, and Fox building this up as a monumentally important game, almost a religious experience. The boos, classless. The parade behavior of the NY'ers, crude. I'm not surprised, just upset for the players, Tito, and their families.
