Boras to meet with Manny

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff July 18, 2008 05:58 PM

Agent Scott Boras said today he will meet with Manny Ramirez to discuss the slugger's future while the Red Sox play the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, Calif.

"We'll have a discussion about Manny's future," Boras said by phone.

The Red Sox have until Nov. 9 to pick up the 2009 option on Ramirez's deal. Boras has indicated in the past he believes Ramirez can play into his 40s and would like to see the slugger with a long-term deal.

Boras would not comment on reports of a six-figure fine levied against Ramirez for his incident with traveling secretary Jack McCormick, but a source close to the situation indicated it was "hogwash."

Boras would not comment on whether there was a fine of any kind, but the Globe's Gordon Edes through industry sources, has reported the fine was in the $10-$15,000 range with the money going to a charity.

  1. Nick.

I am a long time Globe reader and Sox fan who thinks what you folks did here today was shameful.

You printed Lobel's garbage and allowed fans to haul off on Manny all day in the blog

Then when Gordon refutes the Lobel nonsense that Manny deliberately blew the Rivera at bat in NY because he was ticked off about a six figure fine, you shut down the comments.

That is not right. Let Lobel, an obvious miscreant, and the blog here now take commentary on the false story.

  1. Thanks Barb! My comments never get posted...

I've always thought Lobel was an angry little man with some kind of disorder. We think Manny is crazy, here's a journalist who's obviously lost a few screws.

  1. Boras thinks ALL of his clients can play at peak level until they're 45 and should all get max contracts accordingly. I love this guy.

  1. Manny needs to take his circus act to Barnum & Bailey. I would sure hate to be a teammate of that guy. Nice effort against Rivera the other night. He makes about $40,000 each at bat, and 3 out of 4 times this year he has produced squat. They need to jettison themselves of Manny, Dice-K & Lugo.

  1. Is anybody here really surprised that Manny is short a few Fruit Loops in his breakfast bowl? We have seen this act for years.

I am guessing that he is on a sort of "probation" at this point--with the terms being: hit the ball, stay out of trouble, be a good teammate, shut your mouth. Even Boras cannot fail to understand those terms.

Manny has already been the center of public controversy three times this year. It won't take much more for the Sox and most other teams to conclude that this guy is more trouble than he is worth. Boras understands that. I am not sure Manny does.

  1. here's food for thought... Manny's current contract was negotiated by his former agent (including the club options), & therefore, if the club picks up those options, Boras doesn't get a dime unless Manny renegotiates a new contract.

  1. Be nice to see this creep gone, he can take Jokeo Lugo , Crisp and Delclarman with him, we should ask for nothing in return, just getting rid of them will be plenty. Boras can shop him to a competitor, let them put up with manny being manny, a self centered egomanic who COULD have been a real hall of famer, instead he brings shame to the Sox on a consistent basis. Epstein and Francona should eat their pride and sit him.
