Drew out with sore back

Posted by Baxter Holmes, Globe Correspondent July 9, 2008 02:05 PM

Red Sox manager Terry Francona said J.D. Drew is out of the lineup for today's game against the Twins because of a strained back, which happened in last night's 6-5 win.

"He tweaked his back not as bad as Japan -- and that's in his words -- but it was getting stiffer by the minute so once we got the lead, we tried to get him out of there knowing we have a day game today," Francona said.

Francona said Drew suffered the strained back while swinging.
