Familiar feeling

With all the talk swirling that Manny Ramirez could be leaving Boston -- either tomorrow or at season's end -- it reminds us of a time when another beloved-but-controversial superstar left town.

Four years ago tomorrow, the Red Sox traded shortstop Nomar Garciaparra, the face of the franchise for nearly a decade and one of the best ever to don the uniform, to the Cubs in a four-player deal. Things worked out, of course, but the move stirred Sox fans like nothing since Roger Clemens signing with Toronto in 1997.

While we don't know Manny's future with the team, let's take a look back to the aftermath of the Nomar deal, when we were left trying to put things in perspective. Click here to see our coverage of a tumultuous time in Sox history.

  1. Trading Manny isn't going to solve anything. It won't help Clay Buchholz become a major league pitcher. It won't help the bullpen to perform better. It won't help Jacoby Ellsbury to steal a base. It won't prevent Dice K from having his patented melt down inning. Sox are playing like a team going through the motions right now. Getting beat up at home by better teams.

  1. I'm sick to death of "Manny being Manny". It has become a distraction and his sitting against good pitching is a joke. It's time to let him move on, maybe a change of location will do him some good

  1. Please trade Manny, ever since the All-Star break (when he made the comments to the newspaper reporter about management) the team as a whole has not been playing well. I believe all of his antics are bringing the rest of the team down with him.

  1. No one had a clue Nomar was going to be traded. AND Nomar's health was at question, not just how he felt about playing in Boston. The situations aren't really the same at all. In 2004 we lost an icon but not an overly productive member of the team. This year, if we lose Manny, we lose both.

And "Proud Red Sox Nation Member", if Manny wants to go, and that seems to be part of the issue, that isn't the team's fault alone. Why boycott Fenway when it's what Manny wants to happen?

  1. Please do, because then real fans could get a ticket!

  1. Trade him....from a real Sox fan...not some pink hat wearing member of Red Sox "nation".
He is now, at this stage in his career an above average clean up hitter...not even the best #4 hitter in the AL East, let alone the league. Trade him while he still has value.

  1. The obvious difference between the two situations is that we were able to make a deal that actually improved the team back in 2004.

There's really no match out there for Manny. Even if we eat all of his salary, we aren't going to get value for him.

If we could get an above average quality left fielder and a lock down setup guy, then yes, I'd say go for it. Unfortunately, we're not going to get that.

It would be utterly moronic to trade a hitter of Manny's quality for fifty cents on the dollar in the middle of a pennant race just to prove we would. If we were ten games out of the Wild Card, yes, I'd say do it, but the problem with this team right now isn't a question of parts or resources. Simply speaking, we have all the tools to go all the way on paper.

I'll say it again: If the front office is intent on not dealing with him anymore, pick up his option and trade him next season. He's a valuable trading chip and the offseason market for outfielders is completely barren. He'd be the premiere player on the market and not unattractive at $20 million for a season. As a two month rental? Nobody's going to bite, but for a season at what is swiftly becoming market value for any above average player? We could easily shake down a team for a young, controllable player with great upside and a handful of other quality prospects.

Letting him walk isn't the answer. Even as a type A free agent, odds are we'd get better on the trade market than we'd get out of the compensation picks. Especially worse is the fact that he'll command a salary that only the biggest of teams can afford. If he signs with someone like the Yankees, Mets or Angels, we'd get screwed on the picks. We'd essentially be letting Manny walk for chump change.

  1. I'm one of the biggest Manny lovers there is/was, but it's time for him to go bye-bye. The Red Sox aren't going anywhere this year (as evidenced by the bullpen and their performance vs. the Angels), so it's not like you are throwing a WS away. Besides, it's time. THe sooner, the better. If they let him walk at the end of the year, they get a pick, or, they could just trade him and get someone for him. Either way, good bye Manny. Go be Manny someplace else.

Nomar was a royal pain in the gonads. No one liked him. In fact, just recently, Remy was talking about how Sean Casey plays the game with such joy, and he said, "I've never seen anyone with that much happiness and joy playing the game..." Then there was a pause, and you hear Remy laughing, and someone in the booth had made a suggestion to him and Remy, on the air, said, "(Laughing) Yeah...Nomar Garciaparra. No, I don't think so." He was a cancer. Yeah he hit, and for some reason fans liked him, but his teammates and management hated him. And we haven't really heard from him since.

And Clemens was "in the twilight of his career." He just took drugs to prove Duquette wrong. Besides, that led to the Pedro acquisition, so that went okay I think.

And if you keep going back, you get names like Mike Boddicker, Bruce Hurst, Nick Esasky, Mo Vaughn, and on and on of guys who were let go and went into the toilet, or, never had the same success they did with the Sox.

Point is, bye Manny. You've been good, great even. But it's come time. All the antics, it's enough. You are like Bill Parcells-you have fantastic talent and everyone is better because of you, but after awhile, people want to jab ice picks in your eyeballs, and you get really, really old.

    Bye. Good luck.

  1. That attitude is pretty much what I'd expect from "red sox nation" and its "members". I mean, who will go into the green monster now to use the bathroom, drink gatorade, and talk on a cell phone?

  1. Get him out. He's bad news. One selfish non hustling bastard.

  1. I don't care about Manny saying or not. I care about the inablity of the Red Sox to pitch and hit. This team needs a motivational kick in the butt by Francona.

  1. Nomar was a pain in the ass, a fragile diva, whose negativity was a constant downer.

Manny is hilarious, a savant, hard to figure out; an optimist whose happy-go-lucky demeanor is a must-have.

The FO (cough-epstein-cough) needs to quit messing with him, leaking "inside matters" to the media, and paying off sports writers to drag him down.

Losing Nomar was definitely like losing a cancer. Manny is still producing and entertaining - losing him will be more like an amputation.

  1. It feels like in this era of "Red Sox Nation" that people are getting too attached to certain players and their judgment is clouded when it comes to what's best for a BASEBALL TEAM. Baseball is a business and the ultimate goal is not to find a gimmick or find what makes for the most wacky fun. This is not a game show, this is baseball. The ultimate goal is to run a successful baseball franchise, not just for today but for the future so that you have the best chance to be successful every year. As hard as he works and despite his production, the way Manny plays is disrespectful. In his decline he is no longer irreplaceable, and IF you can find a way to get a legit player back for a belligerent aging slugger who is going to walk in three months YOU DO IT. No matter what the circumstances may be. It may notmake this team better now, but as was mentioned before, even a trade for some mid-level prospects would yield a more immediate and more positive result for this franchise than two supplemental round picks from a big market team. Manny plays for Manny, not for Boston, not for "Red Sox Nation." The sooner people realize this and LET GO, the better off we will all be. I think it is comparable to the Nomar situation because Nomar's actual health issues and Manny's "facetious" health issues have both affected the team in an equally negative way. He has disrespected his employers who have done nothing but do all they can to put up with it, he has disrespected his teammates, the fans and the game of baseball, how can you blame the Red Sox for trying to see if they could get any kind of return on him. And if trading Manny drives away a few of the fair weather fans looking for a Broadway show then I wont complain. Its unfair to the Boston Red Sox to suffer any more of this drama just because people at the games want to see a freak show.

  1. His crap is funny when the team is winning, but when they aren't winning, people grow tired of it. If he doesn't want to be here (again), then why keep him? And if there is any truth of the Red Sox being able to land Jereny Hermida for him...do it now! That being said, none of us know what really happens in that clubhouse, so I am going to do the ignorant thing and trust management to what they feel is in the best interest of the club.

  1. Manny is damaged goods. If he's such a great player then why are people telling the Sox, "No Thanks"? The Sox would eat his salary and the players to be traded would be replaced with draft picks next year since he's a Type A fre agent. People can see his willingness to quit, he cannot hit like he did a few years back, he's a guess hitter now who cannot hit elite fastballs. Put him in a bigger OF and his defensive liabilities increase.

I am not buying the Sox as a WS contender. The pen is weak, the bench is weak and with guys like Lugo, Cora and Crisp taking up space there isn't enough talent to make this happen. Can't win every year.

  1. So what Manny made comments after the All Star break? Manny has made so many comments over the years and no one reacted they way they are now. Why is that? Could it be because Red Sox front office has decided that Manny is 36 and on the decline? So they whisper in the ears of all the media to create Manny hysteria. That is why the team is doing horrible right now. It's not all Manny's fault here. Theo made a comment to McCarver about letting Manny go that went national. That was a shady move.

It's doubtful that anyone is going to pick up Manny before the deadline. So deal with it! Quit booing him and cheer on one of the greatest players to ever wear a Red Sox uniform. He was your 2004 World Series MVP!

Keep booing him and he'll go into shut down mode and I wouldn't blame him one bit.

  1. The blog writer stated Nomar was "one of the greatest ever to don the uniform". You're either really young, or you don't know your baseball history.

  1. The players are fed up with his bull crap, you can see it in there eyes after the last beat down from the Angels, you can't keep him for another day much less another year, not for any amount of money. We as fans should all turn our back on him when he steps to the plate which is the sign of ultimate disrespect, such is what he shows us by not playing hard!
