Reports: Manny would OK deal

Posted by David Lefort, Boston.com Staff July 31, 2008 01:06 PM

According to ESPN's Peter Gammons, Manny Ramirez will agree to waive his right to block a trade should the Red Sox and Marlins agree to a deal. No deal has been agreed upon as of yet, and in fact Gammons also reported that, according to a source close to the talks, the three-way deal between the Sox, Marlins, and Pirates is close to dead.

From Gammons: "Florida has reportedly asked Boston for a cash outlay beyond the $7 million to cover Ramirez's contract, in addition to two prospects. That essentially would add up to the Red Sox trading Ramirez, $9 million and two prospects for Jason Bay."

SI.com's Jon Heyman also has similar information, with the addition that Manny would accept a deal to any team. Here's his report:

"Ramirez has approved a trade to go to Florida, Philadelphia, Los Angels or anywhere else, SI.com has learned. In return for Ramirez signing off on a deal, the acquiring team will agree to drop the two club options for $20-million apiece for 2009 and '10 in his current deal."

  1. Ummmmmm, I kind of agree Manny needs to go, but all of that for Jason Bay? I don't think so... we wouldn't get any prospects in return at all? I hope this isn't the case.

  1. I think the Bucs are looking for a better deal for Bay. If they don't get one, then the Manny trade will happen just at deadline.

  1. As a Yankees Fan I would be devastated to see Manny traded from Boston --- he may be the only reason I still hate the Red Sox.

  1. Manny says it's not about the money, it's about Peace of Mind? Two days ago he said he'd agree to be traded anywhere as long as the other team didn't pick up his options? (so that he can get a big, fat, long term contract) So really, he doesn't care about his peace of mind or where he plays, the biggest issue for him is being a Free Agent and making the money for the next 4-6 years.

  1. As a yankee fan, I hope he gets traded but it doesn't look as if I'll get my wish. Just imagine... the Sox without Manny hitting .447 against my Yanks and Ortiz's numbers will of course fall in light of the missing Manny. Essentially two Yankee-killers gone. It truely would be a beautiful day.
