Getting out alive

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff July 1, 2008 09:24 PM

Grant Balfour, though he walked Manny Ramirez to load the bases in the top of the eighth, also got himself out of that sticky situation. Balfour induced a groundout from Mike Lowell to shortstop to end the inning.

That keeps the score at 2-1, heading to the bottom of the eighth.

Jason Varitek stays in to catch, with Craig Hansen on the mound in relief of Tim Wakefield.
