Give it a rest!

Posted by Matt Porter, Globe Correspondent July 24, 2008 01:05 PM

No one's quite sure when it started, but if one man has his way, it will be gone this weekend. Red Sox fan and Boston Globe columnist Kevin Cullen today calls for the end of the "Yankees suck" chant that has rung out -- with far less frequency in recent years -- where rowdy Sox fans are gathered.

In his column, Cullen makes a few strong arguments for the grassroots abolishment of the chant. Among them:
  • It's obnoxious, crude and moronic
  • We won in '04 (and '07), remember?
  • Chanting it at a Celtics rally? Come on
  • Makes us look like inebriated yokels

So check out the column, and tell us what you think -- should "Yankees suck" be shelved for good?

  1. Amen to Kevin Cullen. Hey guys, 1998 called, they wanted their chant back. The "Yankees Suck" chant is awful, outdated, and isn't needed in the era of Boston as the City of Champions.

    Chant "Year Two Thou-sand!" instead.

  1. I think you are taking it a bit seriously I think its fun and funny. People from new york chant boston sucks all the time!

  1. Lets just note that this guy also doesn't like the wave or singing sweet caroline. Next, no more beer, cheers of any kind, or laughing at games.

If people want to yell yankees suck, who cares? Let them

  1. Living in Baltimore, whenever the Sox come to town the chant usually shows up at some point in the game... which is kind of cute I guess, but it also makes the fans look immature and bitter.

I agree, I think fans should show some class and let it go.

  1. Should retire the wave along with the ‘Yankees Suck’ chant.

  1. I think maybe Mr. Cullen is over-analyzing the situation a bit. OF COURSE it's crude and obnoxious...that's the who point and that the fact that we've won a couple of series is not enough to make us not hate the Yankees. Sure, there have been a few good Yankees (Roger Maris was among my favorites), but for the most part they still suck.

I live in Minnesota, but was back in Boston in June and bought a YANKEES SUCK t-shirt outside Fenway. I wore it last week at the Twins-Rangers game at the Metrodome (ugh!) and got tons of compliments on the shirt. The whole league thinks the Yankees Suck, but Red Sox fans are the only ones bold (or perhaps moronic) enough to yell it.

  1. I agree - put it to rest (for now). It does make us look foolish and poor winners. Let's be better than those class-less (proven at AS game) Yankee fans!!!

  1. Give me a break! Are you you a Yankee fan? what do you think Yankee fans were shouting in New York at the parade and the game? That was wrong! I dont care where the heck the game is played! This is the All Star Game! Our players should not been treated like that! That shows the Yankee fans have no clue about anything and thats why Red Soxs fans are very smart when it comes to sports! Yankees _uck!

  1. As a Red Sox fan living in Northwest Ohio, I'm subjected to "the Red Sox suck!" simply for walking down the street wearing my ball cap. This is the same kind of moronic behavior as the Yankees fans who booed Papelbon et al including MVP J.D. Drew at the All-Star game.

Yes, it shoud never have gotten started, and should be stopped, though I'm araid such behavior is contagious & will only spread.

  1. This must really touch a nerve for Cullen. Perhaps an embedded Yankee at the Globe? Truth hurts pal. Wusses like him won't be happy until all men put on skirts. People like him make me want to say it even more. YANKEES SUCK! It's a rite of passage in Boston and I have taught it to my children.

  1. I went to Yankee Stadium the first part of July for the first time. And when the Yankees won, the " Boston Sucks" chant was going full force. Plus I saw shirts there with sayings on them that I don't think they would even let in Fenway Park. So it is just not Red SOx fan's chanting/

Posted by Mark Sienkiewicz July 24, 08 02:24 PM
  1. This "chant" isnt just ours as Bostonians, it's for anyone and everyone that hates the yankees. The fact that you DO hear it at a Celtics rally, shows just how much it means and how bad we love to say it...especially after we won in 04 and 07, because after 03 we were completely depleted, and no matter how much we said it, it wasnt really true. It's something that's united red sox fans, and fans that come to boston that hate the yankees, and lets be honest, its just as fun to say that with a large crowd of people as it is to actually hate the yankees. So too bad if you dont like the image it puts on us, it's part of who we are, deal with it

Posted by Darvish July 24, 08 02:27 PM
  1. I hate the Yankees. I'm going to voice my displeasure with my rival, and no news reporter is going to make me stop. Now more than ever, Yankees Suck! Shout it loud and clear. (I think anybody who has spent as much time as I have around that team and their fans will agree.) (And I've never had a drink in my life.)

  1. Give it a rest. In 2008 it's merely stating the obvious. I used to be a wish.

  1. Please, please shelve it.

Posted by Peter July 24, 08 03:00 PM
  1. Slow news day?

the "Yankees suck" chant has ALWAYS been crude and moronic. A lot of fans (everywhere - you ever listen to some of the chants at the Stadium?) are crude and moronic. Not to mention inebriated yokels. This is not new.

The one good thing about the chant is its fuction as a unifier. If you're at Camden Yards, and things are getting tense between Sox and O's fans, a good rousing chorus of "Yankees suck" brings everyone together.

Posted by Char July 24, 08 03:06 PM
  1. I'm 100% behind any effort to remove "Yankees Suck" from our vocabulary. They are opponents, dangerous and wily opponents who deserve respect and some good natured ribbing, just like all other Major League teams.

"Yankees Suck" is as embarrassing as people who still boo Johnny Damon when he comes to Fenway. The man has an '04 World Series ring. Everyone with a ring at Fenway should receive our admiration and applause.

Posted by Chip July 24, 08 03:12 PM
  1. I always hated the chant. Kill it. Suck chants suck.

    Posted by Bill D. July 24, 08 03:18 PM
  1. Yes, it should definitely be shelved. I've always hated it . Not that Boston fans shouldn't chant when they're playing the Yankees, they should! But something creative and intelligent is so much better !!

Posted by rory July 24, 08 03:18 PM
  1. Ok, I agree with the arguments that yelling "Yankees suck" shows little imagination and is past its expiration date. What, then, should a confirmed Yankee hater yell when he or she is at a Red Sox-Yankee game?
--"I respect the Yankees, but hope they lose!"
--"Yankees, please fail in your attempts to hit the ball!"
--"We have won twice this century and the Yankees have never won this century!"

None of these roll off your tongue. I guess what we need is something new to scream at them. Perhaps we could return to "Yankees are bums". Or why not "Yankees are sub prime mortgage lenders!"

Posted by jim in oregon July 24, 08 03:21 PM
  1. I agree that the chant is a bit outdated considering the Sox' recent success. However, I take issue with Cullen's condescending tone in conveying his message. It's entirely possible to make a point like this without thumbing your nose up at the general population ("I don't sing Sweet Caroline"). Honestly, if that's your personal preference, fine, but don't use it as some sort of "holier than thou" pedestal on which to profess your ideals.

  1. Yelling "Yankees Suck" is played out.

  1. PLEASE shelve it. I sent a quite thank-you note to him earlier this morning. I left Boston last year. I miss Fenway, I miss watching the team, but I definitely do NOT miss the fans. Its embarrassing when that chant breaks out.

Posted by SteveM July 24, 08 03:43 PM
  1. People chant it because it's true :-)

  1. No matter what -- even if the Sox win the next 10 World Series -- even if the Yankees are mired in last place for 100 years -- even if they dig up Babe Ruth and return his bones to Sox -- the Yankees WILL ALWAYS SUCK.

Yes, Yankee and Red Sox fans will always be a bunch of inebriated, moronic yokels -- I basically stopped going to Sox/Yankee games @ Fenway in 1976 when bleacher bums threw cherry bombs and batteries @ Mickey Rivers (after he and Greg Nettles had beat up Bill Lee @ the first game in Yankee Stadium that year); and Sox and Yankee fans beat the crap out of each other, both in the stands and on Landsdowne Street and what is now called Yawkey Way.

YES, YANKEES SUCK!!! (Kevin Cullen -- get over it...)

Posted by Lee in San Francisco July 24, 08 03:47 PM
  1. Chanting it at a Celtics rally - stupid
Chanting it at a Yankees/Red Sox game - not stupid

Kevin Cullen is probably just mad that we didn't give him a free t-shirt.

    Posted by Sully's Tees July 24, 08 03:49 PM
  1. I don't care if others use it against the Sox; it's not enough reason for me to use it. I personally haven't used it, and don't like it. I hope I'm not pontificating, and projecting a "holier than thou" attitude, but I just don't want to be in that gang. I do differ with Cullen on the "Sweet Caroline" thing. I've sung it, and think it's a great touch. I confess to being one of those kill-joys that kills the wave. When it was new...cool, but I got tired of it a long time ago.

Posted by al July 24, 08 03:52 PM
  1. The Yankees get elevated by the chant – they become too large a part of what defines us as Red Sox fans. It also diminishes the Red Sox success by connecting it with the Yankees. In my book, the further we are from that lot (the Yankees and the chanters), the better.

  1. Riiiiight. This is some serious business watching baseball, I guess. What is wrong with this guy? The "Yankees Suck" chant is all part of what makes the rivalry fun.
I go to a baseball game to have fun and some snobby know-it-all is going to say something so silly is a problem. Participating in chants like this is a big part of the fun. Baseball is a kids game played by adults and when I go to watch baseball there's nothing wrong with acting like a kid again for one night. Especially at the price of a ticket A FENWAY now a days!!!
I assume this doesn't happen anywhere else.
The "Yankees Sucks" chant happens in Boston when the Yankees are here and the "Boston Sucks" chant happens in NY when the RED SOX are there.
Next thing you're going to do is write a scathing article on the use of "nah nah nah, hey hey, good bye", right?
It's just a game pal, get with it!

  1. The Yankees clearly do not suck. As a third generation Red Sox fan, I have always cringed at the stupidity of this chant. It reeks of wannabe status and is not the way to express the superiority Boston has as a city and currently as a baseball franchise. I agree with an earlier poster who suggests "Year 2000" if you are inclined to negative chants. I prefer support over hate any day.

    Posted by redseat9 July 24, 08 03:58 PM
  1. Yes it should go. The Yankee fans still yell Boston Sucks but why stay at the same level of that group. Lets take the high road and stop the chanting.....but we do reserve the right to resurrect the chant at any time...like maybe this weekend

    Posted by Stebe B July 24, 08 04:05 PM
  1. if you suck, you suck. even the yankees know they do, so i guess we don't need to yell it anymore.

Posted by casey July 24, 08 04:14 PM
  1. We live in an era where pushing the envelop is no longer risky...it is common practice. There are rivalries all over the country with their very own ways of getting under each others skin...that's just part of the sport. Whether it is football, Basketball, on any level from High School to pro, there are these types of familiar bashings. Geez, go a womans college softball game or a little league baseball game. I think that was the first time I ever felt uncomfortable for the players. getting in eachother heads is part of the competition and makes us fans feel like part of the team. What ever gets under the other team's skin is fine by me (provided it doesn't get you arrested or booted from the staduim).

Friends of mine go to Fenway and they talk about the passion of the fans. Yeah, they talk about the 'yankees suck' chant and the 'Steroids' chant whenever Giambi comes to bat (still love that one). But they don't tell me how bad or mornic it was. They tell me how amazed they were with the passion filled in the stands. Folks go there not just to root for the Sox but also to soak in all that is baseball. That wonderful tradition not seen in very many other places. It is there from the opening pitch to final out...don't give that up.

You want to switch chants fine but don't lose that passion. Whether it is cowbells in Tampa (talk about obnoxious and moronic)...or yankees suck at fenway, all fans will find a way to rattle their opponents cage. If it still works, do it. You may hate it but thats not the goal...make sure the yankees do too.

And get some exercise...stand up for the stinking wave once, will ya?

Their stadium, new and old will be That Stadium in the Bronx as far as I am concerned.Since i am living in the Vampire State, I have to see some of my tax dollars go toward That Stadium in the Bronx version 2.0. Saying That Team from the Bronx Sucks takes too long, and I am too lazy for that. I'll stick to shouts like PAPI!--PAPI!--PAPI! or YOUUUUUUUUK!

Just because Yankee fans chant equally dopey things, it's no excuse for us to do it. What, you want to be just as dumb and illiterate as a *Yankee fan*?

We'd be better off rising above it. It's also not the kind of thing I'd like my young kids hearing repeatedly.

  1. Since when did everyone at Fenway and the fans of this rivalry want to be so nice and high class? Part of the fun are chants like this. We eliminated "1918!" by winning the series a couple times. When I stop hating the Yanks and players like ARod, Giambi and others, then I will stop the "Yankees Sucks" chant. Just because you want to be spirited and chant doesn't mean you are looking for a fight or are drunk. It seems like Fenway is becoming an overpriced, nice fan(who doesn't really care about the game) park more and more. Is it because prices are so high? I'll be yelling "Yankees Suck" at the broadcast on ExtraInnings all weekend, hope I don't offend anyone in the stands. I hear "Red Sox Suck" all the time in NY.

Chants are part of the game, part of the fun and – most important– don't hurt nobody. The Yankees Sucks chant inFenway don't hurt Derek Jeter or Alex Rodriguez or Joba Chamberlain, is just one way to show to the Yankees that they are in our house.
Think (and write) about it, is overrate an issue that's just fun.
Everyone who love this game have to respect some Yankees players, ok. But when they play against our team, always is usefull and –I repeat– fun.

I guess this is the reason why I haven't been to a game at Fenway since 2005, all the whining that people do, or the fact that going to the game is more of a social status then actually watching a baseball game.

But recently being at Yankees stadium i heard chants worse then anything i have ever heard during a Sox/Yankees games at beloved Fenway, including but not exlusice to "F*** Boston!!!!". Because of this i beleive that the chant "Yankees suck" is mild by comparision and I will not call for an end to it.

  1. Like the first poster suggested, "Year Two Thousand" is a much better option for a chant. Remember how miserable you were hearing "1918" from New York fans? For entitled Yankee supporters, hearing "Year Two Thousand" has to be about as annoying as it gets. And it's less profane and venomous, so kids lucky enough to be at the games won't have to be subjected to hearing the unfortunate word "suck" a thousand times. Also, drunk people shouting "suck" tend to spray saliva when they do so, which sucks.
A point of greater concern for me is this: who are these fans who think doing the Wave late in a one or two-run game is acceptable? The game is in the balance and you're focused on the friggin' Wave? Give me a break. Waves suck.

Sure it might be a little personal, but again, he did bring it on himself. Not only does this get Fenway away from the "Yankees Suck" rhetoric, it freshens up the "E-Rod" chants from a couple years ago.

  1. I have been stuck living in NY for a long time and my animosity level toward these jerks is sky-high. I have two Harvard degrees and don't drink but I feel nothing's wrong with letting off steam earned over several decades. It's fans in Arizona and San Diego who don't care what happens to their team who take the "high road." I was at a game in Denver and said a call at first was a "bullsh**" call and had some woman (with no kids anywhere) tell me that this was a family environment and they don't appreciate foul mouths in the ballpark. Some on here may agree with that viewpoint but that is not my view of baseball. Believe me, it is mild compared to Yankee Stadium's chants and their gay-bashing, Boston-hating little songs.

  1. Well I had to add my two cents. But to the poster that said "my little granddaughter was traumatize" then by all means don't ever take her to yank stadium if you do her ears will start to bleed(also her eyes) Trust me I been to Yanks stadium before 04 and after 04. MY GOD the curses, the middle finger, your mother is this,Boston is for h*mos, this is a real town not your silly little f*got of a town. got ring t-shirt,buck Boston..etc..etc fine if you don't want to chant then don't but if you feel as insulted as anybody that ever been to yank stadium then go ahead "IS CALL FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!!." To say we can be higher class then they are, that would only make us look worse. If you notice they call anybody from MA "masshole snobs" not just masshole anymore.noo now is "masshole snobs" to the average yank fan(well the entire tri state area) we SUCK NO MATTER What. . If you hate the chant then stop and use the one .Ben uses

  1. 10 excellent reasons NOT to abolish "Yankees Suck"....because the Yankees STILL suck:

-No World Series titles in 7 seasons.

    -A-Rod still sucks.

-Joba threw at Youk's head. Beckett hates him too.

-Hank Steinbrenner denies the existence of Red Sox Nation. And he's a d*ck.

-Jeter still leans forward when a pitch is on the outside corner, and 9 times out of 10, the ump will call it a ball.

-The Milwaukee Brewers would love to have 1/10 of the Yankees' team salary so they can re-sign Sheets and/or Sabathia.

-I'm SO SICK of hearing Michael Kay's "SSSSSSSSSSee ya!" and John Sterling's "Theeee Yankees win!" Their media SUCKS.

-They have a subpar farm system. They sign stiffs like Richie Sexson and Wilson Betemit instead of promoting young players to build towards the future

-Do they really need a new stadium?

-They're not built for the playoffs. Besides Mussina, their rotation is shaky.

  1. In New York they chant "Boston Sucks" so why not chant "New York sucks" instead? That way we throw in the Mets, the Jets, and the f-ing Giants too.

  1. I'm surprised the Red Sox fans can spell "Yankees Suck".

  1. As a Sox fan for many years, I agree, dump Yankees suck, the wave (insults the players by saying, we're bored) and find a Boston song to replace the NY (Neil Diamond) "Sweet Caroline".

and play winning baseball, we can all cheer for that!

  1. I could perhaps get behind the chant if it served the purpose of rattling the Yankees cage-since it doesn't -I'm at a loss to explain the dedication of Fenway fans who incessantly chant the meaningless mantra. Now shall we talk about the wave and "Sweet Caroline"? Without a doubt these obnoxious habits are far more embarrasing to Bostonians (other than drunken Beantown Boobs).
