No fireworks, but Alex Rodriguez was just drilled by a pitch from Craig Hansen.
The 98 mile per hour fastball (1-0 count) came mighty close to hitting Rodriguez's head, but he put his hands up to block it, and it hit his left hand. Rodriguez stumbled a few feet away into the infield on the third base side, where manager Joe Girardi and the trainer came out to check him.
No one left the top step of the dugouts, and Rodriguez eventually made his way to first base. That loaded the bases with two outs for Jason Giambi, who walked in a run.
It's now 8-3, Yankees.

Listening to Tim McCarver & Joe Buck rave about Craig Hansen and how valuable he'd be in a trade was just too much for me!! Are you kidding me??? I have supported Craig Hansen since first seeing him pitch in Portland in AA ball, but over the years he has proven only one thing-he is not going to be a good pitcher for the Red Sox anytime soon!
I would much rather see them trade him then lose a Buchholz or Lowrie or Bowden.
If he is as marketable as they say (and I truly doubt that!) then I say get what you can!
The only good thing he did was hit A-Rod!
And what is it with these teams today? One guy gets hit and the team gets a warning? 40 years ago, these players could take getting hit and expected it
especially after a home run. Sad...
Just like you bring in a reliever that has had much success against a certain hitter, you also need to avoid pitching Wakefield against the Yankees, who lately have destroyed him. It is not coincidence that he seems to lately have bad outings against the NY visitors. They have a strategy, a method that works against Wake that other teams have not figured out. Forget about Wake's psyche, he will understand. Put in a pitcher that gives you a better chance in such an important game. Bad decisions push you down the hill towards a bad stretch, and eventually a bad season. For what? Loyalty to a long time red sox pitcher? The season is what counts. Win first then worry about Wake's psyche later. Think outside the box.
Hey # 1. Have you ever been hit in the head (or almost in the head) by a 90+ mph fastball?
I no longer watch games in which Wakefiled pitches. I just don't have the stomach for it...especially against the Yankees. Part of the problem is that perpetual 'hang-dog' expression on his face, like he knows that at any moment here comes Tito asking for the ball. If he returns next season the whole front office should be ashamed of themselves.
Of course Hansen wasn't trying to hit A-Rod, because if he was, he would have missed him.
