Ichiro'd

Posted by Gordon Edes, Globe Staff July 23, 2008 07:42 PM

Ichiro ran down a line drive by Kevin Youkilis near the foul line, then throwing across his body doubled off J.D. Drew, who had walked.

Something you may not have known about J.D. There have been 170 times in his career that JD has had a 3-and-0 count, and he has never put the fourth pitch in play.He has walked all 170 times. After the count has reached 3-and-0 on JD, and gone beyond four pitches, he is 23 for 86, with 262 walks.

  1. that is an interesting bit of info on jd, and that patience working the count one reason i'd be curious to see what he can do to spell ellsbury awhile as lead off. which is a better short term alternative than moving dustin or youk, imo.

GREAT blogging today, Gordon. Too bad the only thing that gets reader commentary around here is the antics of manny. your deserve to know those of us not watching the game are following it thru you.

You and Nick are the only ones who do it up good during game time.

  1. If i read that right, that's a very quirky stat--
shouldn't opposing pitchers have picked up on it by now?

But, err, that stat doesn't seem to add up?

if he's had a 3-and-0 count 170 times (which seems a little low), and walked all 170 times, then how can he be "23 for 86, with 262 walks" after reaching 3-and-0?

Is it something like "JD walked every time in 170 at-bats that lasted 4 pitches, when the count reached 3-0 after 3 pitches", and then "He is 23 for 86, with 262 walks, when a pitcher throws a strike to him on a 3-0 count" ?

  1. check the math, my man. 286 tot. walks in 170 career chances? I would like to know the original factoid that caused such a stir on your keyboard. Please forward. I'm a big fan.

  1. Maybe you should clarify this stat:

"Something you may not have known about J.D. There have been 170 times in his career that JD has had a 3-and-0 count, and he has never put the fourth pitch in play.He has walked all 170 times. After the count has reached 3-and-0 on JD, and gone beyond four pitches, he is 23 for 86, with 262 walks."

If he has walked all 170 times the count has been 3 and 0, how could there have been counts beyond 3 and 0 when "he is 23 for 86, with 262 walks"? Either he has walked every time (170) there was a 3 and 0 count, or he hasn't. In fact I find it hard to believe he has walked every time he has had a 3 and 0 count. What are youtrying to tell us?
