It's 4:01 p.m. ...

... do you know if Manny Ramirez is still a member of the Red Sox? Neither do we ... but you will as soon as we know.

From the Associated Press:

The deadline for the Red Sox to trade Manny Ramirez has passed, without word of any deal that would move the disgruntled outfielder out of Boston.

A three-team trade that would have sent Ramirez to the Florida Marlins appeared to have fallen apart before the 4 p.m. deadline Thursday. In exchange, Boston reportedly would have received outfielder Jason Bay from Pittsburgh.

The Red Sox did not immediately comment on Ramirez's future. Teams sometimes announce trades after the deadline has passed.

Ramirez increased his criticism of the Red Sox on Wednesday, saying the team did not deserve him.

But Boston, aware of the slugger's ability and his role on two championship teams, wanted to get a player or players who could help in the final two months of the season.

  1. We should have traded Manny for prospects... and signed BONDS. Yeah, that sounds ludicrous, but any more than keeping Manny for the rest of the year given his behavior? We get prospects for next year, and have a distracting personality, yet dangerous bat, for the rest of this season to defend the title.

  1. Has anyone considered that Scott Bore Ass is behind all this? Af ter all, wouldn't he benefit if Manny were to move somewhere?

  1. Great player but glad to see the back off him regardless of what happens for the rest of the season .
Manny being Manny was getting boring , disruptive and talking about the ownership disrespecting him was exactly what he was doing with the Red Sox fans .

  1. So Theo and Co. have pulled off another 3 team blockbusterat the deadline. Involving a declining (albeit a slower decline than Nomaaaah,) whining about his contract, mal-content superstar. Most people said you couldn't get decent value for Manny. However, they did manage to get a younger, slugging outfielder who is much cheeper. All in all I'd say they got about 75 - 80 cents on the dollar. Which isn't bad, considering what I thought teams were going to try and make them swallow. The real question is; will Jason Bay be this years Orlando Cabrera. Just remember, it' s not all Jason's fault if we DON'T win the World Series. This kid shouldn't get creamed just because he replaced Manny and we didn't win.

Hey it was 86 years, and a lifetime for most of us. Now we've had 2 in 4. Call me crazy, but I just don't feel nearly as devasted when they don't win it all anymore. Why you ask? Because, before when we said "Next year" it was false hope. Now when I say "Next year" it is because of the certain knowledge, not hope, that we acutually have a legitimate shot.

So welcome to Beantown Jason Bay, win or else...jk :)

  1. Pirates and Dodgers certainly took full advantage of the Red Sox's desperation. Moss will probably be better than Murphy and Hansen if he is given time to mature and harness his stuff could be more than serviceable.

  1. Im glad Manny is gone. We game up way to much for Bay (he is not worth Laroche, Hansen, Moss, and morris) But im glad manny is finally out.

  1. Good riddance- Manny is a bum- he is being paid millions to "play a game", and he still has issues, he is a flake and I am glad he is gone. The clubhouse will be much better without the "brat" around'. He should be ashamed of himself, the way he acts on the field is setting no good example to our kids who play the game. I know the Sox gave up alot to get rid of him, but if they waited till the end of the season and not pick up his option, they would have gotten nothing in return. The Sox would be better off with Bonds, at least he trys.

  1. I'm sending Joe Torre a sympathy card.

  1. It's no surprise and no one should feel cheated. Despite his talent, his comodity value to the Sox diminished, as did their leverage to use him to attract the very best deal, because he continued to play the role of the jerk with brilliance Paying the remainder of his salary and giving up Hansen is discouraging; however the poison is now out of the club house.

  1. Good. He's a puke. Can we get back to winning (instead of whining) now?

  1. This deal is terrible....
Moss is a great young prospect who can hit for power..
Hansen has great stuff and could be a future stud closer

and that is without future hall of famer Manny:
who helped bring 2 elusive championships to boston

In return we get the erratic Bay: who hit .247 with only 22 HR's with a terrible slugging %

    Epstein should be fired.

  1. So long Manny, thanks for the memories good and bad. Though he should be ashamed of himself for his recent behavior (slacking and not hustling should never be acceptable)...I for one am elated that they traded him and in return we get Bay for the remainder of this year and 2009. Bay is an upgrade defensively (on the road), will slot nicely in the 4 hole... In the end did we give up too much...perhaps.

  1. this is a terrible deal.....

Hansen: Potential stud out of the bullpen in the 8th or even closer material
Moss: Huge power potential, and speed to boot

Manny: future hall of famer, who significantly helped bring 2 championships to Boston; consistently hitting for power

    we get:

Jason Bay: Mr. Inconsistent who batted .247 in 2007

    Theo should be canned

  1. The Pirates did a great job taking advantage of the Sox desperation to rid themselves of the petulant Ramirez. This won't be the last time you hear of Moss or Hansen.

  1. I am so gald Manny is out of Boston, he is been a real pain lately, I look forward to watching Jason bay in a Sox uniform.

  1. Looks like they gave up a lot to get rid of him.

  1. The Dodgers clubhouse is going to be a nightmare, with weird Manny, fat Andruw Jones and grumpy Jeff Kent all forced to get along. Joe Torre is a good manager but not a miracle worker

Posted by Rich July 31, 08 06:50 PM
  1. I have to agree with Joe. Manny, Moss, Money and Hansen for Bay. Seems we gave a way a whole just to get rid of Manny. I agree we, the fans, deserve a 100% effort from all the players. I think Manny would have given his best effort if he excepts to get the 100 million.

  1. Ed, Boston is a great city to be a fan. Not a great place to be a player.

  1. I am sad to see Manny go, but he had to go. Manny did this to himself. He put the Red Sox in a position where they no other choice really.

I've grown used to his antics, and quite frequently they make me laugh. But slapping a teammate, pushing a 67 year old down, and vocally calling the management out are not good negotiating tactics.

We couldn't get value for him because of his antics, and while I'll miss the bat, and the "Happy Manny," the Manny we saw this year was spiteful for no good reason. We could see the forest through the trees with the hiring of Boras as his new agent, and while I can't blame him for wanting the most amount of money he can command, I will blame him for acting like a jerk to get it.

Good Riddance, and good luck Mr. Torre. I hope your butt doesn't start bleeding again because of Manny.
