Lugo on Manny

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff July 27, 2008 06:40 PM

Julio Lugo, who started working on his rehab in the pool three days ago, and said he's ahead of schedule on his return, also talked about his good friend Manny Ramirez. Lugo defended the left fielder on the current situation, and about his knee injury. Ramirez said, when I asked him how his knee was, "It's OK. I'm sucking it up. I'm playing."

"I've been here two years, I think I'm one of the guys closest with Manny," Lugo said. "I've been closer to Manny than anybody else. As a friend I'm trying to defend him. He cares so much. He does so much to be ready. Sometimes things distract him. Things just came together. I don't think he means anything. He [felt] real bad about the Jack [McCormick, the team's traveling secretary] thing. He apologized to Jack and he apologized to [Kevin] Youkilis. Those things, nobody even mentioned that. I don't think anybody mentioned that. Sometimes people misjudge him. People think he don't care. That's not the way it is. I think you guys should know that. He's the first guy to come here, the only guy who gets up at 10 o'clock in the morning every day is Manny, to get set. It's unfortunate that things like that happen. He shouldn't be doing that stuff. He's a mature guy. He understands he made a mistake. Just move on, ask for forgivenness, like he should, and move on."

What about the problem with the knee?

"That's something that you can't say. He says he's hurting, he's hurting. Nobody knows. Sometimes you've got tendinitis in your knee and it doesn't show anything. But if you're hurting, you're hurting. I can't say anything. I know Manny, he plays every day. He's been hurt for a while. They ask me the same thing, 'Is he hurt?' I'm like, 'He tells me that he's hurting. I can't tell you that he's not hurting.' I shouldn't even be saying that. I know. I know he's been hurt for a while. If you ask me, that's what I'm going to tell you. He tells me that he's hurt and I believe him."

Does he want to be here?

"Of course he wants to be here. That's not true that you can't trade Manny. Somebody's going to take him. I mean he's been the best hitter in baseball. Manny wants to be here. I think he wants to finish here. He just wants to be settled, like everybody else."

  1. I think it's important to be able to read this info. Everybody jumps to conclusions. Let it be said that I'm annoyed by the Manny crap right now, especially the lack of on field seriousness that pops up, but I'm still hard pressed to say, "get rid of 'em!"

We don't know the whole story, we never will. Writers and fans alike will make judgements, that are based on partial information. We're not there, we can never know all the details. I just think that really, we are a better team with him here, but what am I basing that on? - conjecture, info I glean off the internet articles, and sports talk. I'm no expert either on what's really going on, no more than the guy who hates Manny and thinks he's a jerk.

It just sucks to have this drama every year. It it Manny's fault, is it the media's is it the fans? I don't know. I just think we're a better team with him. this whole thing is a pain in the ass.

    It's

  1. I know it is popular to bash Lugo, but the guy has always been a straight shooter who respects and loves the game. I don't think he would defend Manny just because he was a good friend if Manny were being disrespectful to the game or his team. (Of course, there is the possibility that Manny has duped Lugo.)

  1. So he is sorry for assaulting a 65 year-ld man? OK - all better - he is just misunderstood. The guy is obviously messed up in the head. He can't stand that he has to abide by a contract he signed and doesn't have the control. Don't let the door hit you Manny...

  1. Amalie, this is not directed toward you. So please dont take this personally. I love your reports. I think your the only objective reporter Boston has.

I dont want the Sox to trade Manny. He has nothing to prove to anyone here, especially to Shaughnessy and Massarotti. I am so sick of reporters saying "a player" said they are sick of manny's antics. Who is the player? Gee they didnt say. But Manny's name is always used, in every story. I think Boston sports would be a lot better off if we dump Dan and Maz. Who are both as objective as CNN at the Republican Convention. I think Theo should get a list of accepted players from Batman and Robin so we dont have to listen to them. Thanks Manny.

  1. I think the whole thing is a major distraction right now for a team thats struggling, the bullpen is a mess, theres no timely hitting.I understand building from within, but theres no denying we need to make some kind of move and that means dealing a Bowden or Hansen. Lets be honest Crisp cant hit,I know about his D and all Lugo sucks I love V-Tek but cant hit.I guess my point is the Skankees got a pretty sweet deal for pretty cheap. We need to shake things up!!

  1. Until someone comes up with a solution that replaces a .300 avg/ 30+ HRs, 100+ RBIs to hit behind Papi the trade talk is pointless, especially if you folks want to see the Sox hoist another trophy this fall.

  1. Lugo makes good sense, but the Manny haters are too caught up in their own vitriol to hear what he is saying. Manny is a good person. Everyone on his team, with possible exception of a jerk like Schilling, has always said he is a good guy.
He is also a miraculously good hitter, who has helped win two World Series. Some of the critics should stop showing their envy, and shut up and support the man, because without him, the team is going nowhere.

  1. 'Doesn't play every day.' Uh-huh. Tied for second on the team right now for games-played.

  1. Sawx fans are such lemmings. Media says Manny has crossed the line, and fans follow in line

Manny isnt being any less of ass this year, he's just getting more scrutiny by the media who is being spoonfed by the front office to bash him.

Its still Manny being Manny, but the FO wants to get rid of him after this year. Best way to do it? Get the fan base turned off to his antics.

You are all sheep. Open your eyes and see the marionette strings this FO is pulling.

  1. You people who think the Sox are better without Manny are OUT OF YOUR MINDS. Why do Boston fans fantasize that they are in fact the management? Who cares if management has hurt feelings?

  1. Leave it up to Francona

  1. Manny is a good person? He assaulted a 65 yr - old and is p o'd about a very lucrative contract HE signed. The guy's ego can't stand not having control. Tell me guys like Youk want to hear a guy making 20 million/yr b-tching to reporters about his contract status. He doesn't play hard every day. His numbers are down, and he doesn't gut out injuries. Even if he was hurt he didn't follow the policy when you are hurt. If you are hurt you go for treatment and let the right people know it before game time.

  1. The people have spoken. 9,235 have voted so far (67% Yes and 32% No) so far to trade him now. Want to vote or see the results go to the Red Sox Home Page and to the middle of the page is the survey and vote.

Posted by PressBias July 27, 08 09:23 PM
  1. It isn't the 20 million - its that its the end of July and he doesn't know where he'll be working in November. That's what Manny wants changed. The current Red Sox ownership are fine with that, just like they were fine with that on Petey and Schill.

  1. Manny is a phenomenal player and he does shows up to play a lot more than people give him credit for. He does care too!!! Am watching the game right now, Rodriguez just nailed a double which Manny played off the wall and threw in to second. Manny's throw didn't quite get there in time but anybody watching his face when Rodriguez was called safe can see the dissapointment and frustration all over Manny's face.

Manny is emotional and he pops out with stuff during extreme moments. I understand this trait because i share it. Sounding off when emotional has never done me much good but at least i don't have the press pushing me 24/7. I am glad that Francona seems like he understands Manny and knows how to deal with him. Francona doesn't overreact and jump into the the craziness with Manny, he doesn't punish him unduly and yet he does seem to quietly and maturely let Manny know what's what.

I think Manny wants to stay but he needs for the Red Sox to say that they want him and to prove it. The more they don't say it, the more upset and provocative Manny becomes.

My take? Manny has been missing big Papi and the emotionally stability and loosening effect that he provides. When Papi hugged Manny when he scored tonight, the joy, connection and trust that the two of them share is very evident. Big Papi carries all of that within him and he has extra to give away. Papi is a big rock for Manny and Manny seems willing to trust him. Watching Manny and Papi tonight was great- I haven't seen Manny grin like that since Papi got hurt.

  1. Should any of these shannanagins come as a suprise? We have seen it for 8 years.
A win against the Yanks tonight,(7-0 at this point) and a sweep of the Angels and all will be right again in the nation.
The man is a juvenile outside the batters box and a genius in it, again we have seen it all before.
Its funny how Jimmy Rollins, last years NL MVP shows up late for the first game of a huge series against the Mets, and gets benched and hardly any of the same nonsence we see here is said. And it wasn't the first time Rollins has mesed up either.
Bottom line is what he does on the field, no matter what you think of the guy as a person, it's going to be awfully tough to get someone in the four spot to replace him.

  1. He's a sensitive guy, who probably doesn't act in the most mature way, but he's also one of the great hitters in the AL. Someone has to show some maturity right now. I think Lugo probably understands Manny as well as anyone. It would be fool hardy for the Sox to have a temper tandrun and get rid of him.

  1. I don't get what's with the Red Sox FO but they are being jerks. First they accuse Manny of faking an injury, then of bailing on his team, then Theo tells Fox that they would like nothing better than to trade Manny and have wanted to do so for 51/2 years, then when Manny says enough is enough, just send me a letter the idiots on ESPN says Manny is sending a message that he doesn't want his option picked up because he wants a big contract next year. I think the Red Sox FO made their feelings perfectly clear to him. He has stated more than once he wants to remain a Red Sox and retire here but it is very clear the Red Sox don't want him. I'd tell them enough is enough too.

  1. The press makes huge of Manny season in and season out. Here's something interesting...watching highlights on ESPN tonight. Santana hit a long ball, he thought it would go foul, so he stood in the batter's box watching it. Well, it didn't go foul, it was a fair ball. He couldv'e gotten a double out of it, but wound up with only a single because he didn't take off right away. 30 second highlight, everyone laughing. If that had been manny, ESPN and every other sports network would have disected it for two days. Why? Keep Manny where he is. The Sox are not the same team without him.

  1. Amelie:
Do you really and truly believe all this stuff by Lugo?

Have you ever got a non speaking Spanish player on the Sox to comment on Manny 's antics,as well?

Your article is a real tree hugger, just knowing Manny feels so bad about Mr. McCormick. It's good to know Manny's such a team player, also, just ask Youk.

Most of us Sox fans can only say to Manny, good riddance, thanks for the memories, see ya and don't let the door hit you on your way out!

  1. sox can't trade manny without losing the two first round drafts they will receive as compensation for him. therefore in order to make a trade they will have to get the equivalent in return and there isn't a team out there willing to give that up for an aging vet with diminishing skills and the amount of baggage that comes with manny for the remainder of this season, furthermore there aren't many teams in a position to give him a four year extension worth 100 million. you can vote all you want but for better or worse we are stuck with manny for the season. sox will no doubt dump him after this year and go out and spend the 20 million a year for a younger version of the same athlete. manny was good for boston and boston was good for manny but the days are numbered. i just hope that manny and the fans can ride the final days out with a bit of class.

  1. One would think that any professional athlete pulling down 20 mil a season, which by the way is $123,456 and 79 cents a game, would be a model citizen....or at least a happy citizen, but it's all relative. We've all had rocky relationships with our employers at work....and no matter how much you make, it's going to ocassionally happen. Is manny right with his antics? of couse not. Does Manny always behave properly? of course not. But Manny is a human being just like the rest of us and he's not perfect. That being said..... I surely hope he takes a good look at his "big picture" and does the right thing. Nothing lasts forever....but I sure hope this relationship can heal and make it through the remainder of the season. An abrupt change is in nobody's best interest....with the possible exception of Tampa Bay and the yankees.

  1. The bottom line, he's a big distraction which will cause the front office not to pick up his option. They'll have to play it out for this season. Nanny will perform fairly well; looking for a contract with somebody so he can't afford a bad season.

But, it's a distraction especially the younger players. We're all aware of Manny's prep work and Hall of Fame career. But what kind of a message does everything send.

PD, Youke are on top of their game. Watch the expressions when it come to Manny. Guarded; reserved. No respect. To Manny it's just a game. He's financially set. There's 12-15 guys on the 40 man making minimum and in R.I. that's chump change. They don't understand and shouldn't have to smell the BS in the dougout

  1. Let's be real simple here. Manny is 36, and he's one of the games greatest hitters, he plays the monster very, very well, and he wants to be respected. Personnaly, for all he has given the Sox, I think he feels his option should have picked up by now for next year. I understand the braintrust in Boston being cautious about picking up his option. Afterall when you put that money into an older guy you want to know your money will reap returns. I argue on simple point: In a playoff chase who are you going to get to replace him, his plate discipline, and a guy who can play the monster like he does? Adam Dunn is not that answer, at least not right now. Look! Man-Ram is on pace for close to 40 HR's, and at least 100 RBI's! With Ellsbury leading off, and some swatters behind him, Boston would be ill advisd to trade Manny. Maybe in the postseason. Look both sides have made their opinions known. So if Manny stays, and doesn't want his option picked up for a career ending huge contract, then you have just put Mannny in a produce, or lose situtation. In the end the Sox make the call, if Manny wants the contract, and maybe another ring, then now is the time for him to produce, wether the Sox pick the option or no! I'll say this...Without Manny, in the A.L. East race. you can kiss another championship good-bye. No trade can replace Manny, unless you get a boatload of talent in return, which says the Sox have given up the season. Manny will be a Red Sox till at least the end of this season, a trade is just to complicated. Let's hope there are'nt anymore issues! Yeah, I think it's gonna get ugly!

  1. "Jay W." You're on the money.

It's so obvious what's going on. Red Sox management HATE paying the kind of money Ramirez is hauling down, so they desperately want the mood of the Nation to be perfectly cool with idea of their not picking up his option for 09, or if there is the slightest chance of a trade.

They are desperate, that is, to fan the flames of hate, at which the goons of the Boston sports media are second to none - so that the morons of the Nation will actually be happy to see the back of the best player on the team - hands down.

Posted by BillCarroll July 28, 08 04:46 AM
  1. How about trading Manny straight up for Rollins...then turn around and trade Youk for Texiera (this trade was a rumor before) and sign Texiera for extened years...You replace Manny's RBI's with Texiera (look at the numbers, they are quite comparable) then you have Rollins setting the table and playing short. Then you drop Lugo for a bag of balls and a stick of gum, or he can shut his mouth and play back up at 3rd, short and 2nd and trade Cora as well (since you cant trade Lugo)
    Look at this lineup:

    1. Rollins
    2. Perdroia
    3. Ortiz
    4. Texiera
    5. Lowell
    6. Drew
    7. Tek
    8. Crisp
    9. Ellsbury

Would this lineup make you long for the Manny days? I know it wouldnt for me
