Manny an unexpected scratch
Manny Ramirez will not be in the starting lineup for this afternoon's series finale in Seattle.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Ramirez showed up this morning and said his right knee was sore, an overnight development that the manager said caught him by surprise. The trainers had not communicated any issue to Francona after the game.
"He showed up this morning, I wasn't ready for that,'' Francona said. "He said his right knee hurts.''
Francona then joked, "The (expletive) jaywalking, if you do it right, you won't hurt your knee.''
Ramirez told reporters his knee has been bothering him for about a week.
"I've just been trying to play it out," he said, while jokingly singing for tips at his locker in the clubhouse, with his I-Pod docked to a speaker and a cup out seeking donations from teammates. "I decided it was time to give it a rest."
Asked if he would be ready for the Yankees series, which begins Friday, Ramirez said, "I don't know. I'm day-to-day at this point."
In any event, Kevin Youkilis will be hitting in Ramirez's No. 4 hole today, Sean Casey will DH and Jacoby Ellsbury will be in left field against Felix Hernandez, the Venezuelan right-hander who is the Mariners' best pitcher.
Francona said he had planned on using Casey as DH, anyway, but had envisioned Ramirez in left and Ellsbury in center. Coco Crisp, 1 for 11 against Hernandez in his career, was not scheduled to play, but now will be in center.
Francona elected to keep Jed Lowrie at short instead of Alex Cora, who might have expected to play a day game after a night game. The manager has now started Lowrie in five straight games and praised the way he has performed. He's batting .385 (5 for 13) with 3 RBIs and has played well in the field.
Hernandez will be making his third start since going on the DL after spraining his ankle when Carlos Beltran slid into him in a play at the plate. In his last start, against the Indians July 18, he went six innings, allowing two runs on four hits while whiffing eight. He is 1-1 with a 3.29 ERA in two starts against the Sox this season. He has pitched better against the Sox in Fenway Park (15 scoreless innings) than in Safeco (5.31 ERA, 12 ER in 20 1/3 IP).
Here are the lineups:

Is anyone else just sick and tired of manny??? I mean come on!!!
Looks like Manny will be out of the lineup for the Yankees series. Next time Sox punish Manny they better think twice.
Manny being Manny, again
I'm psyched! We've been able to condense all the typical Manny issues that occur over the course of the season into a three stretch:
Random off the field incident:
The Jack McCormick Throw Down
Weird Manny Moment(s):
Phone call from the wall
Seattle Jaywalking
Random Injury that keep Manny from the Lineup for 2 - 60 days:
The Unexpected Sore Knee
Usually these are spread out and the random injury doesn't happen until mid-August. Hopefully Manny will buckle down and focus when he returns from his "sore knee" at the beginning of September. It's ok too because Papi is back tomorrow.
Manny's going to make J.D.Drew look like an iron man.
At least Tito is funny......Manny on the other hand is a slacker -- highly paid, but still a slacker....
That so cooky
if the biggest trouble our "problem athlete" causes is jaywalking, sitting out a couple days with questionable injuries, hanging out in the green monster and complaining a little about his contract then we should consider ourselves lucky. even the fine he received recently doesn't compare to dealing with problems of steroids, arrests, or allegedly cheating on his wife
ill take the "manny being manny" issues any day
Manny at his old tricks again. A surprise injury even to Francona
What happened? Did Jeff Gillooly take a whack at his knee after the jaywalking incident?
I'm day to day?
Now theirs a Team player ready to give his all, and oh yea doesn't he want 20 million dollars to go with those sore knee's? Please get him out of here!!!!
Manny needs to become a DH...unfortunately, there is room for only ONE DH on this team, when he's healthy, and that's David Ortiz.
With both of them suffering from knee troubles and creeping old age (for ballplayers), can you imagine the Sox fielding a lefty/righty DH platoon in future seasons of Manny from the right side, and BIg Papi from the left?
Of course, that will NEVER happen, because that DH spot would cost the Sox about 35 mil a year.
But, can you imagine the production???
Manny is such a piece of garbage.
he is missing one game - why don't we all calm down for a second.
Wow. What a slacker. If he misses a few games he might drop to 3rd on the team in games played.
If he wasn't the best free agent signing in history, and the team hadn't won two WS titles largely because of his post-season play, I probably would never root for him. Because he does things like this.
Mark McCarthy was right about Manny. The kid has completely lost his marbles.
Up until a few weeks ago, I was saying there is no doubt Manny's option should be picked up for '09. Now I am finally sick of him. Let him go. His best days are behind him and the Sox need to get Ramirez behind them. Move on.
Manny being Manny? No. Manny being a DRAMA QUEEN? Yes.
I think Manny is resting up so he can play in the Yankee series with his boy Big Papi!!
Watch out world. The dynamic 3 4 are back!!!
Manny's request for time off makes me think that the sox may need a Holliday of their own. Matt Holliday.
Gee,Isn't this surprising,Manny comes up lame just before a travel day. Thats a nice little 2 days off. Maybe his knee is bothering him. All I know is Big Papi played on a sore knee a long time,no complaints, very few days off. I have always been one of those fans that have looked the other way when it comes to Manny being Manny because of production f,but man when does this become a cancer to this team. I understand the loyalty between players, but this crap has got to be driving them NUTS.
If you go to Redsox.com, you will get a much more objective report of the situation then you will from the "time-to-hate-Manny-page" in the Globe
If Theo had any stones he would put Manny on the 60 day DL ....
The Yanks and Rays win today....way to be a team player Manny!
I love how people get on Manny when things like that happen. But we love him in October. That is a Red Sox Fan for you!
I think Sox fans tend to read too much into the ups-and-downs and ins-and-outs of Mr. Ramirez. That having been said, I don't think there's any good reason for the Sox to pick up the option on his contract for next year. I'll hate to see Mr. Ramirez go (he's my favorite player), but the old gray mare just ain't what she use to be . . ..
Well perhaps his DL-Stint should start today for a long time!!!! It will probably help Jacoby out of his slump, and with David Ortiz returning tomorrow, maybe, just maybe it would prove to Manny that the Sox really don't need him. Then I would love to see what other team will be willing to pay him 20 mil a year
Throughout the years, I've been trying to stay positive about Manny. But I dunno.. This offseason, it seems silly to pick up the team-option on Manny for another 20 mil.. Let him walk, and spend the cash on someone w/ their head screwed on correctly and spread some cash to folks who are approaching arbitration/etc.. Man, such talent... in such a weird, weird head..
Why not play Brandon Moss? Yeah, he's a rookie, but he has better hitting stats (higher BA and OBP, 1 HR every 39 AB vs. 1 HR every 45 AB for Crisp; half the RBI in about one-third the AB); you lose some defense and speed in exchange for better hitting.
Oh, and I propose that it become a felony for anyone, ever again, to write or utter the brainless cliché "M_____ being M_____."
Earl is a piece of garbage.
Manny is second to Pedroia in Games Played (95, out of 101 total games). He is 3rd in at bats on the team. 3rd in runs scored. 3rd in total bases. team leader in HR's.
That doesn't sound like he's dogging it to me. Sounds like he's been running the bases a lot.
If anyone else on the team reported a bad knee, it would be a non-issue. The Manny hating is rediculous. "Let's get rid of him, regardless of his contributions". WTF? you'd rather have a fun bunch of guys that you could maybe bowl with than get a pennant?
Manny is really great at one thing: making his supporters sound more and more stupid. He's a slacker idiot savant who couldn't care less about his team, couldn't care less about winning, etc. I'm embarrassed we've tolerated him for this long.....let him lay up on some other team.
all the slobs who listen to talk radio will be all over this one, useless fools, do something with your lives!
Why dont you all SHUT UP! Sox would be 90 years and counting withouta World Series ring without Manny ! Smartin' up!
What happened? Did Jeff Gillooly take a whack at his knee after the jaywalking incident?
Wwhhhhhyyyyyyy? wwwwwwwwhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyyyyy?????
I am so sick of this fool...even worse is when fans give standup ovation when he comes up to bat. My take, Manny can be Manny somewhere esle.
Look he is what he is, we all know that. Bottom line is the RS put up with most of it, as do most of us fans, because the guy is the idiot savant of hitting!!
Well, it's good to take a break before a scheduled day off, right? I mean, the team doesn't have to win or anything, and the Yanks and Rays already won earlier today, but it would be okay to drop a game, right?
I'm no saying the Sox couldn't beat the M's w/out Manny, but having one of their sluggers in there, on the road, would really help. This is the type of game the Sox have been dropping this season lately, but Manny can take a rest.
Maybe he should fly home today to rest in his own bed, so he'll be ready for Friday's game against the Yanks!
He did win you guys TWO World Series.
Asked if he would be ready for the Yankees series, which begins Friday, Ramirez said, "I don't know. I'm day-to-day at this point."
What a clown. You think Kevin Garnett or Tom Brady would say something like that? Ramirez is a total disgrace, a baseball hitting savant with a ten cent brain and no heart.

Just thinking out loud here, but maybe his knee is sore and needs rest? He is 36 years old after all. It doesn't have to be a stunt, really gamers and slackers alike occasionally come up lame. Enough of idolizing and then bashing the guy. He is what he is, an extremely talented but erratic and tempermental athelete.
I support Manny 100%
You guys are a bunch of morons, you and the media trying to run the best hitter this city has seen since Ted Williams out of town. All I know is Manny hits .300 with 30 plus homers and 100 plus rbis every year who cares what he does off the field.
I love all the fair weather fans that like to throw insults at manny, the weei,( d and c crowd ).MANNY has done things that are foolish and others, that are disappointing (the pushing of the sox traviling secretary )and not above criticism, but unlike the angry manny haters, i like what manny has done on the whole, his stay in boston has brought me lots of good times.two championships are great, he and his teamates made many sox fans proud.the venom from some is laughable, im sure these are the same people who complained ( like me ) about brunanski, clark, and nixon the (real dirt dog) hitting clean up.manny didnt win by himself, yet nether did the red sox win without him, enough of the calahan, dennis stick..
Dear Tito,
Surprise ... Surprise ... Surprise
Signed,
Gomer
Matt T.. your statement makes no sense.. half a season for Manny and Papi.. Imagine the prodcution?? It would be less then when they are both in the lineup full-time. Im not sure where you were headed w/ your statement..
Manny's sudden knee sounds questionable to say the least. On the other hand, it seems odd (even for Manny) to being doing this stuff in a contract year. Then again he may be so immature, he is trying to punish the sox for fining him and not getting his contract done. Of course there is always the chance his knee really is sore - I guess we will never know!
Well Tony this is what you asked for, right? Let's fine Manny for shoving George Costanza (traveling secretary on Seinfeld). Let's put the big Dominican in his place. Well he's in his place alright, riding the bench, spitting sunflower seeds, listening to his ipod and collecting his paychecks every 15 days which will total 20 million. You make that much in your entire life Tony? Yep, Manny's getting the last laugh.
'Concerned' got it right - Manuelito HAS played in more games this year than anyone but Dustin - and he does have a torn mensicus dating back to 2006 - sometimes it will flare up.
Love the singing for tips bit - and would love to have seen it. Obviously he caught wind of the two street singer girls with the 'manny oh manny' song and was parodying it.
Gotta love our adorable star slugger. and just pray his knee is ok for Friday, when he can revert once again to "YANKEE KILLER'.
I'll be at the game on Friday night, giving my boy a standing O the second he appears.
Love ya, Manny, baby!

More Manny hijinks! The fans love it when Manny is being Manny! I bet the TV ratings go through the roof!
I think it's about time for Manny Ramirez to take the "Manny being Manny" show on the road and permanently out of town. He has worn out this act in Boston. It's true, he is a great hitter and was an integral part of two championship teams, which earns him some passes. But enough is enough. Why can't he just play baseball and have fun doing it? I remember as a kid in Little League being a little bored with the slow pace of the game and that's what he reminds me of, a bored kid. He gets bored with game and his mind wanders off. Then, he has to do all these ridiculous things to keep himself amused and keep his focus. Really, he comes off like a clown and looks like Side-Show Bob. He needs to go earn his 20 million somewhere else next year. I would trade his 40 hrs and 300 avg for a couple hard working, lunch pail players who will give it their all every day and happily. He just doesn't understand it's an insult to everyone that actually has to work for a living and the fans who pay hard earned cash to watch him play, when he acts like he doesn't care. To give anything less than one hundred percent playing a game for a living is unforgiveable. I don't care if he goes to the Yankees and hits fifty dingers. I hope Theo Epstein does not bring him back. Bye bye Manny, it was fun while it lasted.
Manny does these things because he can. Believe that a recent former President called that the worse excuse of all.
just because Manny makes bank doesn't mean he's superhuman. well actually, he is. I doubt any of you chumps ribbing on Manny could win 2 series, hit 500+ HR, HB in a season and able to j walk. I love you Manny!
This has Scott Boras' signature all over it... part of his blue print to get the Sox to say no to Manny's option so that he'll go to the highest bidder (the Bronx) and the cancer to baseball, Boras can pad his already bloated pockets. This might sound like the proverbial conspiracy theory, but Manny being Manny has been amusing, irritating, and downright frustrating at times. But never have I felt their was any "maliciousness" on Manny's part. Now all i can do is wonder what Boras is whispering in Manny's ear....
LEAVE MANNY ALONE THE SOX NEED HIM!
THE MORE YOU COMPLAIN THE MORE HE WANTS OUT
2 World Series RINGS
30 hrs 120 rbi 320 avg every single season
c-mon! may be a pain in the butt but I sure would not want the Sox to have to face him in October on another team. Baseball has always been about one thing................WINNING. If your going to take the time and complain about his faults than you really need a hobby!
Manny is still one of the clutchest individuals in baseball
What never fails to amuse is the ignorance displayed by those whose “thoughts” are completely manipulated by the Red Sox management, and the Boston sports media.
Anyone with half a brain knows that Ramirez will all but certainly end his playing career in his home town - New York City; and, depending on his numbers this year that will mean his playing for either the Mets or the Yankees.
The Red Sox management is, I’m fairly sure, indifferent to where he ends up. All that matters to them is not having to take any heat from the Nation for not picking up his option.
To that end, anything that can be spun to show Ramirez up - to make him appear as not our kind of player - is immediately and forcefully leaked to those willing goons of the Boston press, or other media - who like the amoral, rabble-rousing twits they are slash and burn Ramirez in their columns, over his various horrific behaviors - like getting a ticket for jaw-walking.
In response to which, of course, those glassy-eyed morons, who pass themselves off as “savvy” Red Sox fans - who routinely overlook the fact that Ramirez has done nothing but great things for our team - whip themselves into an idiotic froth of rage over what no reasonable person would give a second thought to.
And, that’s a funny thing to watch - and I’m laughing.
.
Can't we all just get along?
2006 all over again! Manny's upset that he got fined and they're not resigning him today.
I don't care if he drives in 150 runs. Get him outta here!
I love the Red Sox, but our media and "fans" are an embarrassment.
Usually Manny waits until late August or Labor Dady to take is on-the-job vacation. Maybe the idiot thinks he can sit out the last 59 games of 2008 and still get full market value for 2009 elsewhere. Come on, be nice ! That's just Stupid being Stupid again ! Trade him to Washington or any other NL team with zero chance of winning in the next several years because that's exactly what Stupid deserves for dogging it every year. I don't care how good he is. Get rid of him.
Manny Ramirez is hitting .487 during his 11-game hitting streak, adding in three homers, four doubles and nine RBIs.
Let's dump him.
Bill Carroll, I'll hold out hope against hope that you're right about Ramirez going to New York. I'll take Jeter straight up.
All I know is that ever since MANNY came to Boston. Boston became a playoff contender. I do not remember them in the playoffs in the 90's as often as in the 2000's. Manny is a winner!!! A Hall of Famer!!! One of the Best hitters EVER!! and very entertaining. How can you not resign him!!! oh, I almost forgat, TWO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS!! and was the MVP in one of those.
//I don't care if he drives in 150 runs. Get him outta here!//
Lock the thread. This is the dumbest of all dumb comments.
Didn't this sore leg scenario occur several years ago around this time? For the amount of money he earns and what he wants to get he should play even with a broken leg. When things don't go the way he wants them too, he acts like a spoiled child. He has been pampered long enough. Get out there and play or get out of Dodge.
Manny's been great and it's been a privilege watching him play, but I think it's time to go.Some of these antics don't seem as much like Manny being Manny as mean spirited. It seems that it would be good for the long range health of the club to use that 20 million towards a longer term solution. Would be nice to grab Texiera as a free agent and figure out a way to make it work.
Mr, Bill Carroll,
*stands and applauds* Well said!
Mike D,
First of all, I said it wouldn't happen because it would be too expensive.
But, you're not seeing the bigger picture. IN the very near future, these two will continue to break down MORE and MORE. Were they both to play about 80 games apiece-- forced rest-- by splitting the DH duties, most likely their health would hold up better, and the forced rest would keep them fresher.
You'd probably get 20 dingers and 70 rbi from BOTH of them-- or 40 hr and 130-140 RBI from the DH spot for the season.
That's all I'm saying.
And, it's NOT going to happen, because of the salaries involved...it was just a thought, based on pure baseball thinking, NOT including factors like salary and ego.
So, calm down.
We'll just have to deal with extended DL trips from both Manny and Big Papi in future years...IF the Sox pick up Manny's options and/or sign him to another contract.
I predict Manny will ask for a trade on August 1st !! Just another case of Manny being Manny!
What a jerk, sitting out the last game of a series against the worst team in baseball! I'm sure everyone would have been much happier if he had waited 'till the Yankees' series to take a game off. Get over it.
I'm interested in hearing comments about Manny about 5 years from now, from some of his former team mates. I really would like to know if they are trully tired of his antics, like so many RS fans or if they find him amusing and give him a pass because of the hitter he is.
Can we pause alittle, and try to look back to those days that manny has always done his best for redsox.Dont be the first to throw a stone to him let him have his mind set and do as he does always. He still hits the ball and swings his bat,his knee could be bothering him he is not a supernatural.Too much speculations and hateful words do not give a credit lets be mature none of you who yaaps will take his place.GO MANNY ! HIT IT MORE I LOVE YOU!
Hey Ivan & Ian....set down the Manny Kool Aid and step away from the computer.
I do not give a single squat if Mannychild hit 75 homers and batted .459 in a single year. That thing is nothing but triuble. Other members play with injuries, but as soon as manchild gets a hair across his butt, he becomes " hurt".
please give it a rest. I would rather my five year old nephew in LF and see the number 24 hung in honor, not in shame on manchilds back.
Both of you and the rest of Manny swilling Kool Aid suckers make me wanna puke. What does this dipwad need to do to get noticed for the turd in the punchbowl he really is?
Shoving a 64 year old to the ground, and popping Kevin Youkalis...I would have pressed charges, not allowed John Henry to cover it all up with false " I'm sorries."
DUMP THE BUM DUMP THE BUM MANNY SUCKS WORSE THAN THE YANKS !!!
Defend him to me by sending an e mail to me. Tommyboy051265@sglobal.net
Try it you suck ups !!!
