Manny: 'Don't worry about it'

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff July 26, 2008 01:21 PM

Manny Ramirez just walked through the clubhouse. He didn't stop to talk to reporters, but without being asked a question, the Sox left fielder addressed a group of media members on his way by.

"Don't worry about it," Ramirez said. "I'm not going to talk. I'm going to play. That's it."

Ramirez, penciled into this afternoon's lineup, was then asked if he would definitely be playing today.

"Check the lineup," he said. "I'm in the lineup."

  1. Dan Shaughnessy's article, "Say Goodbye Manny" is the typical BS that some Boston sportwriters hang on various athletes around Boston. And you wonder why a lot of pro athletes don't relish the idea of playing in Boston. They're tied for 1st place and you get this garbage from a sportswriter.

It's a long season and Ramirez is in his mid 30's. It wears on athletes at this stage of their career. I really don't think Ramirez wanted to take a night off vs. the Yankees. Alternatively, I think the guy knows his body, has some issues which cause caution and is taking the long view to ensure that he can keep going strong throughout the season into the playoffs.

Clearly, Shaughnessy's experience is strictly limited to a desk and a PEN which obviously doesn't translate to an accurate perspective. Just another writer with an agenda to go about taking cheap shots. This is a prime example of a frustrated, wannabe guy who never came close to the category of "athlete" but instead became a sportswriter who now thinks he's an expert.

Shaughnessy fits in well with the Boston media scene but there's clear reasons why he'll never get beyond the Boston media market. To play in the national media market, it requires a higher level of credibility and this guy doesn't cut it.

  1. It will be interesting to see how he's received when he's announced. This is reminding me more and more of the Nomar situation in 2004 -- remember him sitting on the bench during a series in NY while Jeter was diving into the stands after a foul ball?

  1. he has to play, he's only bringing his value down to another team, if he does't play. he thinks of manny first. the spoiled child can't afford to teach management another lesson, it might cost him 5 mil on the open market.

  1. All I have to say is "Wow"
The media and the "fans" are blowing this all out of proportion. He's been a key piece is getting us two world series championships. Put up MVP numbers year after year. Misses two games this year and struck out against Mo (I mean, who ever is struck out by Mo?). Let us just get rid of him. What a loser...

  1. Does Manny have psychological issues? Yea I would say so.
If so, he should deal with them before season starts, get medicated, throw away that gross chewin' tobacco, take 20 pounds of doo-rag out from under his hat, and play like a big boy. GROW UP MANNY! Act like you're getting paid for what you were hired to do - PLAY BALL.
