  1. If he stays in the line up he deserves to be booed at fenway in front of a national audience. He's lucky to play in Boston. The fans need to tell him so because its obvious he has forgotten.

  1. I think Manny should grow up and stop being a jerk to his teammates. If he's hurt it's one thing, but apparently he wasn't/isn't since he's in the lineup.

  1. I guess it means that he was faking the injury...Manny being a jerk...just like all the others in Boston.

  1. Sure, he's in the lineup as of 1:00 PM. Let's see if he still is a 3:00 PM. Whatever suits Manny is what he seems to get, thanks to spineless management.

  1. Why put up with it. The numbers don't warrant 20 Million. Let him go and get someone for half the $$$$$

  1. Time to say thanks for the memories Manny, since John henry signs the checks!

  1. Overpaid and selfish. All about Manny, nothing about team. Let him go. Spend the 20 million on someone else. I've disliked him from the day he dogged it in Tampa a few years ago.

  1. Put him on the DL and have him rehab in Lowell.

  1. I've been defending "Manny being Manny" for years, now... the Sox should give him what he wants and pick up his option for next year right now and then trade him for Holliday even if they have to cough up a prospect and eat part of his salary for next year. He'll get the money and the opportunity to hit 50 HRs for the Rockies next year in Coors Field. The Sox will get a real good LF who'll show up to play every day and will feast on the Monstah.
Enough is enough, can anyone picture Ortiz pulling this? Lowell? Youk? dare I say it ...Jeter? Never. Show him the door while they can still get something in return.

  1. Gerhig & Ripken are just a "few" who missed few games in their career. In other words give the guy a break & the benefit of the doubt. How many of us have missed work even though a doctor can't put his hand on it nor does it show up in an objective test. Besides if he was bs'ing management it is not a bad idea to rest every once in awhile. Hell Bonds used to rest every 6th game or so.

  1. I DON'T KNOW IF MANNY CAN MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE. I HOPE SO, BUT MOSTLY, I'M GLAD JASON THE SKIPPER IS NOT IN TODAY'S LINEUP. YESTERDAY HE FAILED MISERABLY. AGAIN!!!! I THINK HE OUGHT TO BE SENT TO THE MINORS FOR A WHILE AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN HE RETURNS

  1. BEING A MANAGER OF A LARGE CORPORATION OR EVEN A SMALL ONE, WHEN ONE INDIVIDUAL IS DISRUPTIVE AS MANNY HAS BEEN, IT IS TIME TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE SERIOUSLY AND FIRMLY. EITHER HE PLAYS AND KEEPS HIS MOUTH SHUT AND QUIT THE LEFT FIELD ANTICS AND GET SERIOUS ABOUT THE PENNANT RACE OR SAY "SEE YA!!!" WE PLAY A LOT OF MONEY TO SEE THE RED SOX BE SUCCESSFUL AND ENJOY THEM WHEN THEY PLAY HARD, WIN OR LOSE. BUT PLAY HARD IS ALL WE ASK OF THE PLAYERS. MANAGEMENT HAS DONE A GOOD JOB PUTTING A GOOD TEAM ON THE FIELD AND NOW IS THE TIME TO MAKE IT BETTER BEFORD IT'S TOO LATE. LET'S HAVE A GOOD REST OF THE RACE.

  1. Many being manny is one thing. If this was a fake injury (again) it is another and it is time for him to be gone.

Enough is enough - lets hope they do not pick up the option.

Posted by Fan from California July 26, 08 02:01 PM
  1. Been a Manny defender through and through. But am sick and tired of these antics. Exercise the option and trade him for prospects. I'd rather build on what the Sox have and send him to the NL then let him go to an AL team as a free agent. Thanks for the World Series Manny. Go earn your money somewhere else.

Posted by NorthAndoverFan July 26, 08 02:03 PM
  1. We're probably stuck with him for the rest of the year because any deal done now will be a fire sale. However, there is no way Theo picks up the option for 2009 based on Manny's childish antics this year. First he hurts Jack McCormick, and now he hurts the Sox by helping to contribute to two losses to the hated Yanks.

Hello Matt Holliday! You will be worth the $$$$ and look great playing in front of the Monster next year while Manny plays where Scott Boras tells him to go.

  1. Lenny (#5) got right to the point. Manny is coddled by an over-indulgent management and aneven more indulgent fan base.. Like a clever spoiled child, Manny senses what his limits are and those limits seem to be very flexible. Of course, If Manny hits a couple of homers and if the Red Sox win the game today, all will be forgiven and forgotten. One hopes that Mr Henry and Theo are not contemplating picking up Manny's 09 option.

With gas at $4.05 a gal. and the world the way it is, I can't stand being held HOSTAGE by this ungrateful SPOILED SO & SO........ Not to mention that he is in the "TWILIGHT OF HIS CAREER". ( CIRCA DAN DUQUETTE/ ROGER ) Move HIM...... SOONER THAN LATER !!!!!!!!!!

  1. Here is the deal....Manny is over rated, he doesn't have the dominating power at the plate anymore and he is a friggin baby....I think we need to trade for Mark Tiexiera from Atlanta and out Youk out in left.

then we will have a team that has a dominating three four in the lineup without all the distractions

Manny has always held all the "aces"....."trump" cards beat "aces"...but those who hold the 'trump" cards have, in the past, sold out to the "devil.".

Get him gone...and go with "hungry" young blood,;or a vet with the attitude of Sean Casey. That excludes Bonds....we know that "devil" up front!!

  1. Manny being Manny...grow up. He is a DH masquerading as a left fielder. A one-tool player who has no sense of baseball. "Manny, let me introduce you to Willie Mays....Manny replys,"Who?" Yes..Manny, not the "sharpest knife in the drawer."

  1. Few of us can stand the way Ramirez behaves (lack of hustle more often than not, apparent disrespect toward his team and teammates, etc.), then he gets up and hits in a clutch situation and we're suddenly all smiles, chanting right along with his apologists, "Manny, Manny, Manny...." His behavior and our varying, inconsistent reactions to it speak volumes about our society, its bizarre relationship with insanely overpaid athletes, and, perhaps most optimistically, our ability to forgive and forget and to time and again look on the bright side of things, no matter what experience tells us. Turns out, this continuous Manny-gate stuff is about us much more than it is about Manny. Moreover, it is ultimately just a game, an entertainment, no matter how passionate we may be about it. Maybe we should take a cue from Manny and not take it all quite so seriously.

  1. Manny being Manny, enough is enough. Management should make Manny get an MRI to prove his hamstring and knee and whatever else he has. Is Manny going to be a Yankee next season? Is this the deal he made with the Yankees to not play against them or if he plays to not try his best??? I hope all this is not true and he could help our Red Sox win another World Series

  1. Put Manny on the DL til Sept 1st just in case and move on. Let him pi$$ in someone elses pool next year.

Posted by Bill July 26, 08 02:52 PM
  1. Sorry, but you people who are saying Manny was "faking" this injury are pretty ridiculous. Manny's had a history of knee problems (I remember them talking about tendinitis last year). Tendinitis can just crop up all of a sudden, and the only thing you can do about it is give it rest. Many times you won't be able to see it on an MRI either.

I also love the comments about trading him. How do you expect to replace his numbers? You're not going to be able to trade him for Josh Hamilton or Matt Holliday. Trade Manny and there is NO WAY the Sox will be able to repeat as World Series champs. There's no way you can win with Jacoby Ellsbury, Coco Crisp, and Jason Varitek's weak bats in the lineup (and Lugo when he returns). At this stage, they're pretty much guaranteed outs.

Manny hasn't made it though a month without taking a day off.... Manny is and always has been all about Manny and he has used his natural talent at hitting baseballs ro his fullest advantage he never learned to become a good fielder and has never even tried to improve upon his fielding skills . Manny is a one dimensional player who should have worn out his welcome years ago save for his natural hitting ability and all you Manny apologists out there.

  1. Manny is not a bad person. Until I hear a teammate publicly say he is faking an injury I will not believe that. Manny is a competitive person who wants to win despite the antics often around him. He has been a monumental part of 2 world series championships that the Red Sox would NOT have won without him. Guess thats easy to forget when a guy's knee is sore and he sits out a couple of games. Gimme a break people. Big deal.

  1. You guys are pathetic, call yourself fans on the redsox and you turn on one of the greatest hitters weve ever had. Pick up Bonds, first of all Bonds is a much worse guy than Manny, oh sorry he pushed a travel agent and and put some sense into youk for crying every time he gets out. So he had a bum knee out two games, hes hitting .301 with 19 homers and 62 rbis. We pay J.D Drew(14 mil), Jason Varitek(over 10 mil), and julio lugo(over 9 mil). And you talk bout wastes of money, dont even give me the ooo JD Drew is awesome better than manny this year, well hes not in hits, rbi's, hrs, average, and obp, and slugging, pretty much every offensive stat. We could have lowrie cash and manny starting making a combined less than 20 mil this year. So dont talk about wastes of money, this guy is a top ten right handed hitter of all time. Go ahead dump manny put in mos, id rather have a few rings and a couple of small problems than brandon moss losing the pennant for us.

The money? since when have half of you cared how much we've payed him? Do you even know his contract?

  1. I agree with the gent who said - don't take it too seriously. I love Manny, and I know I'm watching THE BEST all-time Right Handed HITTER and SLUGGER in the history of baseball. You guys who think not, don't know baseball history. As for sad and angst - well heck, it was Bill Lee's ephus pitch against Perez in 75. When it counted, that was childish, arrogant and incompent, but forgiven. I was also there. It was also Johnson's management in 86 vs the Mets - so many mistakes. I've seen 34 of the 47 Hall Famers introduced at the All-Star game play ball. Manny's career slugging percentage is better than Rodgriquez, Mantle, Mays, Yaz, Jackson, Killebrew, Robinson - only bettered by Ruth, Gehrig, Williams, Foxx, Greenberg (and Bonds don't count... Bonds is a sub-.300 hitter.. etc..). Only Lou Gehrig has more Grand Slams than Manny. There are only about 5 hitters in the last 40 years with higher career BA than Manny. Manny will end up between 3rd and 10th all time RBI, 6th to 10th in HR and 6th in SLG %.
For all the fondness for Williams, Yaz, Fisk, Clemens greatness, only Babe Ruth (3 WS titles with the SOX) stands close to Manny and Papi- Ya know - It is a game, a pastime during the summer - and Manny provides the enjoyment, the hits and I know he works hard to do what he has accomplished. There is another WS or 2 over the next 3-5 years for the SOX with Manny (and Papi/Lowell/Youk/Pap/Beckett/DK..) - Enjoy the game - what is is-

Posted by SoxinAZ July 26, 08 03:32 PM
  1. Extremely well put Mr. Ed Joseph. Not all of us have been tolerant of his misdeeds and misbehaviors. I tire even myself when I repeat that I would prefer a Brian Daubach type, who would hustle every play of every game, hit a consistent .275-.280, 24-28 home runs, 80 RBI's and play whatever position they needed him at, as hard as he could, without missing a beat. Too bad Waslewski could not come up with a + - stat for Manny. Home many games has he cost with his terrible fielding, baserunning and attitude compared with the games he has won with his bat. OK maybe pro athletes are not supposed to be role models, but Manny is a disgrace as an example to young athletes.
You mention our bizarre society and its relationship with overpaid athletes and that we take these sports too seriously and should ease up a bit. However this insanity with sports from the little league, high school, college, amateur and pro level is a reality and is not about to change any time soon. The early Roman leaders planned, paid for and endorsed extravagant spectacles for the masses throughout their empire. These leaders had the insight to know that ther e was little else to keep their overworked and underpaid subjects content.
Should all of our sports suddenly take a back seat, athletes were paid a moderate salary, media attention was diminished greatly a large part of our population, especially us guys, would have an enormous chasm in their lives. Who knows some might even pay attention to how our own 'Roman Leaders' are screwing
    o ver the country!!

hansen stinks, timlin can go deer hunting, lugo is a bad nightmarish waste of good dollars, crisp is a little league hitter, varitek automatic out, so waht do we do to compete in the 2nd half? theres a lot of help needed here, ship to shore from boston harbor, break out the checkbook like ole george used to & buy texeira, holliday, burnett, sherrill etc. ot this year is shot
