Manny Ramirez being interviewed on Ch. 7's Sports Xtra
(Ch. 7 screen image)

In a 6-minute 45-second interview that ran on Ch. 7's Sports Xtra Sunday night, Manny Ramirez talked about his future in baseball, his June scuffles with Kevin Youkilis and Jack McCormick, and even the call from inside the Wall last Wednesday. Some excerpts from Manny's interview with Ch. 7's Larry Ridley follow:

On attending the All-Star game at Yankee Stadium this week:
"I’m blessed. I grew up in New York. My dad, he used to take me to Yankee Stadium when I was 13 and 14, and all my friends are there. I've got some family still in the Bronx. I'm just happy to be back."

On the person he was talking to from inside the Green Monster last Wednesday:
"I wasn't a big deal. I go there all the time to say hi to the guys, they always got some Gatorade for me, and I was talking to [Carlos] Gomez in the other dugout and I saw the phone and I was messing around with him ... It was all good, I'm glad that everybody thought it was funny."

On David Ortiz's impending return:
"Davey, we're excited to [have him] come back. We're gonna have the 1-2 punch again. We're gonna do it again. We're gonna repeat. That's what it's all about."

On the Youkilis, McCormick altercations:
"That's part of life, in every family there's always some problems. We take care of [the] problems, and we move on. So whatever happened here you know, it always gets leaked outside but, it's done and so we're here to win. We're not here to babysit babies. We're here to win games and that's what it is."

On returning to the Red Sox next year:
"This is a business. If I come back, I come back. If not, I move on ... I'm in a great situation, you know why? If they don't pick it [contract option] up, I'm a free agent. I can go play somewhere else for four years and move on. And if not, still gonna be making $20 million for a year so, look the ball's in my court so I ain't worried about it so they want me back, I'll come back. If not, I'll move on."

  1. I always new MANNY RAMIREZ was a good guy. He means well. Some people just dont understand or dont want to understand he's a free spirit type of person like JOHNNY DAMON was. It's going to be hell when MANNY leaves. There's no one like him in all of baseball.

A "HALL OF FAME" baseball player who alsi doesn't take life so seriously like the rest of us do. We want to be entertain when we attend the ball park but what do we do? or atleast some of us do. Complain!!! "oh his hair is to long(JUST LIKE JOHNNY DAMMONS)... oh his uniform is to baggy (so was BABE RUTH'S).. HE DOESN'T TAKE THE GAME SERIOUSLY.. JOHNNY DAMON AND BABE RUTH DIDN'T TAKE LIFE SO DAMN SERIOUSLY. HE GOES OUT THERE AND HAS FUN. IT'S A KID'S GAME FOLKS.

  1. "We're not here to babysit babies."

What's that supposed to mean? You're here to have fun, but you're also here to respect the game while you're having fun. Which means you don't shove your traveling secretary to the ground.

Does anything he says ever make sense? He's a killer ballplayer, he comes through all the time, but it's like all he has is his id, his ego, a breeze blowing through his brain, and monstrous talent. What's left?

  1. kalloway are you comparing damon to manny and/or ruth??? yes i love manny, and obv the babe was great, no argument there, but damon is quite different from both of them, both as people and players. terrible comment. i dont even get what youre saying. no crap manny is great, but what are you talking about?

  1. We need base runners, not goofballs. For 20 mil a year, I expect more. If you can't get on base, move on. It's not a matter of do we want you.

  1. You wouldn't think he was so fun if he pushed YOUR 62 year old father to the ground cuz he wasn't sure he could fill his demand.

  1. Manny is a treasure, there is just about no one like him left in all of pro sports, let alone anyone playing at such a high level. He's one-of-a-kind. He plays the game like a 12-year old.... as it should be played.

  1. You're right. Manny is an absolute treasure. I really hope the Sox keep him...it just wouldn't be the same team without him.

And #5..WHAT are you talking about? You don't think Manny does good for this team? NOW who's got a breeze blowing through their brain?

  1. Let's face it, if Manny couldn't hit a baseball he'd either be in jail or in a mental institution ! Winning should never be important enough to put up with this jerk and his antics , in a professional sport !

  1. I love Manny and respect what he has done for the Sox. However this changing loyalties for money has to stop in baseball. It's more than a business to a lot of people especially the people at home watching the Sox on TV. You know the ones scrapping by these days.

  1. I love baseball not for superstars, but for what the game is, what it means, and how it's played. Its incredibly humbling and requires an extensive amount of teamwork and support. Manny doesn't get this. He is 90% talent and 10% effort.... there is NOTHING wrong with that as long as you, at the very least, respect that almost everyone else around got to the same place on blood sweat and tears, and that they respect the game. Manny doesn't do this. All he does is show up (and he doesnt even do that all the time unless its a contract year.

Manny is not the first guy in baseball to be a bad person and he won't be the last, but I do hope the redsox give him the opportunity to move on and be a bad guy somewhere else. Maybe that new team will have a backbone.
