Manny scratched

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff July 25, 2008 04:30 PM

After being penciled into his regular cleanup spot earlier in the afternoon, Manny Ramirez was scratched from tonight’s lineup with soreness in his right knee.

In his pregame meeting with the media (which took place before Manny was scratched), Red Sox manager Terry Francona -- who had Ramirez in his original lineup for tonight’s series opener against the Yankees -- said Ramirez's knee was still bothering him from time to time and that he had asked the slugger to tell him if he couldn’t play tonight.

After Francona's meeting with the media, and just before the Red Sox clubhouse closed, the new lineup was posted without Ramirez's name in it. What is still unclear is whether Ramirez spoke with Francona between the time the manager talked to reporters and when Ramirez was taken out of the lineup. Ramirez also missed Wednesday's game with a sore knee.

Here's the new lineup:

1. Jacoby Ellsbury, LF
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. David Ortiz, DH
4. Kevin Youkilis, 1B
5. Mike Lowell, 3B
6. J.D. Drew, RF
7. Jed Lowrie, SS
8. Jason Varitek, C
9. Coco Crisp, CF

SP -- Josh Beckett

  1. Just in time for the Yankees series. Suck it up Manny!! your getting paid 20 million to swing a Bat,take a dump in the green monster, chat on a cell phone, and make and arse out yourself in the outfield. Your really starting to get on my nerves!!!

  1. OK, back to the conspiracy theories everyone! WEEI in particular!!!!!

  1. Why would Francona move J.D. from the 3-hole to 6th in the lineup? Though he has cooled slightly since the All-Star break, J.D. has been a big reason why the Sox have maintained the same winning percentage in Big Papi's absence. He seems to have thrived with the added pressure of hitting in one of the prime RBI slots. Why not put him 4th (with Manny out) or 5th?

  1. I hope this is not another instance of Manny bailing out less because of a nagging physical injury but more because he's miffed about some contractual slight or some other imagined slight. It's too reminiscent of 2006. One would think in such an important series against a resurgent Yankees team that Manny would be eager to join his team mates.

  1. They should give him all the time off he needs. WE need a healthy Manny for the playoffs. This just shows that MLB should step up and give these guys 2 weeks off for the allstar break.

  1. Manny is making the "pick up my option" decision really simple.

  1. Timeline:

-The team was to meet with his agent in California to discuss his contract.
-Manny gets sore knee and misses games vs. Angels.
-Manny still injured for big series with MFY.
    -trade deadline 1 week away.
    -Do we remember 2004?

    Hmmmmmmm...

  1. I remember another "big time" player pulling this act against the Yankees in NY, then they let him go and we finally won the World Series. I have alwauys loved Manny, but I have finally given up, I have had enough of his bull. This is a HUGE series, and we need him in there now, suck it up and get it done Manny. And why isn't Mr. Lefty-Righty with the batting order every other night putting JD Drew in the 5 spot behind Youkelis, which would keep it going? It all gets back to Manny, he screwes it up and Tito gets all screwed up in what he is doing.........

  1. Here we go again. This guy is the world's worst teammate. Gamers like Youkilis, Pedroia, Lowell and Papi must be livid. I know I am.

  1. Manny, you are BREAKING OUR BASEBALL HEARTS.

Can it be true you really want out? Do you think you can force an early option pick up this way? Can it be you are trying to force a move before the trade deadline?

    Say, it ain't so, Manny....

by getting out there and PLAYING THIS WEEKEND.

  1. after all this time there are still doubters of the Man-Ram?

What... two world series championships aren't enough? If the guys hurt, he's hurt. There is a life outside of baseball. Some of the people who are "really pissed off" should look into living it

  1. manny is a piece of garbage

Posted by sully July 25, 08 05:56 PM
  1. I agree with Mike that it makes no sense to have the player with the team's best OBP and SLG batting sixth. If you don't want to put J.D. in a prime r.b.i. slot, then bat his third best in the league OBP first, and bring Jake down in the lineup where he can still use his base running to good effect in manufacturing runs.

  1. Time to get rid of this jerk! Yanks & Angels and he doesn't want to play??? Another mystery ailment. 20 million next year, if they do, they're NUTS!!!!

  1. Trade, trade, trade.......

Posted by btm July 25, 08 06:38 PM
  1. Put Drew up in the cleanup spot or bat him fifth. Why drop him so far when he's done so well?

Posted by emac July 25, 08 06:44 PM
  1. Manny's knee hurts..... And I'm the Queen of England.......... Nomar all over again.... Enough is enough! Hate to say it, but Adios Amigo......... No $20 Million option for you! Put him on the 60 day DL and bring Brandon Moss back up..... He's certainly no replacement, but at least he WANTS to play.........

  1. Get Holliday are you crazy?? Matt Holliday is nothing more than Dante Bichette a Coors Field wonder. Look at the home and road splits.

  1. I have ALWAYS been a Manny supporter and made excuses for his eccentricities.

MANNY SUCKS. He is a Bullshit selfish scumbag letting his teammates and the fans down.

  1. Trade Manny for Teixeira.....give him the $20 mil per year ....he plays first with Youk moving to left.

Posted by Paul July 25, 08 07:26 PM
  1. I've had it with both Manny and the Red Sox. All that foolishness of "Manny Being Manny" and Tito making excuses for him. Also, the upper management of the Red Sox being afraid of Scott Boras.
The talk (WEEI) of Tito being the best manager the Red Sox have ever had. I'll take Dick Williams any day.
Also, I'll take the Tampa Bay Rays (The Devil made me do it) and John Maddon over the present day Red Sox. They have nice caps too.

  1. C'mon, Manny apologists.....let's hear your delusional excuses now. It's right about that time of year when Manny mails it in.....AGAIN. Here's the funny part: he thinks he's gaining leverage by not playing, when in reality he's proving why he's no longer needed.

Posted by Keith July 25, 08 07:44 PM
  1. it's just disgusting. what's more disgusting is that there are fans out there who can't see the disrespect he shows not only to the manager but to the people who count on him the most...his teammates.

all that I have seen is Manny is a lifetime .300 hitter, 500+ home runs - bla bla bla..2 WSeries. I would rather have someone who gives a rats ass about the game, the team and the people who pay his salary, US!

    pack it up Manny!

  1. To think that Manny the Malcontent plays where the likes of Yaz once roamed. (or at least when he's not faking another injury) I can't believe the Boston sycophants put up with this imposter and find humor in his staged routines. If Manny would have just charged the mound on Farnsworth instead of being gutless about it, we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

Posted by Mark St Cyr July 25, 08 08:24 PM
  1. I say dump Manny. Give him what he's owed this year and dump him onto the waiver wire. Trade for Holliday or Jason Bay or ayone who will actually want to play. Manny's act is old and tiresome, even for his most ardent supporters at this point.

Posted by Spectre July 25, 08 08:27 PM
  1. This is just drama being circulated. To whom much is given - much is expected. Yeah - he's earning 20 mil - but - why doubt his injury? Don't bad mouth this guy, considering what he has done for our team. I doubt highly any one of us really wants to see what the Red Sox are like w/o him. We need Manny - period. You take all the rest you need Manny - we need you for the playoffs.

  1. It just gets harder and harder to accept Manny at face value. From the late arrivals to spring training ( sick mother almost every spring?) to the repeated trade demands, not showing any hustle to 1st base and 400' singles, to the "sore hamstrings",. Now more contract complaints in the press about his option, saying the front office isn't honest with him, pushing an old man to the floor, that nonsense in '06 seems harder to dismiss..... I'll add this mysterious "sore knee" to the list.
I love the way he swings the bat, and I even like some of his goofy antics, but this act is really getting old.
Maybe his knee is really hurting " for a couple of weeks" like he said. But then why hasn't he even brought it up to the trainers? He has gotten PLENTY of time off this year, DH ing and sitting out. I just don't get it. Why is it that no other guy on the team pulls this crap? Why do most other players have to almost be forcibly removed from the lineup when banged up, and Manny just drops this crap on the team at the last minute?
The more I think of all these things the more ready I am to say goodbye to Manny at season's end. Enough is enough. It might sound crazy but I hope they find something ( minor) wrong with his knee, that would restore some faith and to some extent justify this latest episode. But the red flags will go up for me if the result comes back "inflamation" or some vague nonsense.

  1. He probably stepped in a pothole & twisted the knee while jaywalking in Seatlle.

  1. Manny skipping this one gives you an idea of what's most important....it's all about Manny and how many examples do we need before that resonates with the people who make the decisions...sure, it' only late July but it's the Yankees playing at Fenway with the teams separated by a couple of games.....wouldn't you think any self respecting ball player who has been a part of this rivalry would be chomping at the bit to play in this series......maybe he's got a wonky knee, but the two cent brain isn't much to brag about either...the parallel with Garciaparra is right on......that night he (Garciaparra) sat at the end of the bench when the Yanks were playing the Sox and Derek Jeter was ramming his head in the seats looking for a foul ball told volumes.....trading Nomar was the key behind the 2004 miracle..

  1. I have had it with Manny! They should pin him down shave his head and than trade him. He is a disgrace to baseball. 20 million dollars step it up and get out there and play. This man is a loser! Lets get Holiday now!

  1. We needed manny in the line up he's a yannkee killer, 36 homer vs. yanks, countless RBI'S! so his knee hurts a little give him a day off, manny can do whatever the hell he wants, he's the most consistent hitter in baseball, 20 grand slams 3 behind iou gerhig. GIve manny a break! Try playin 162 games almost every day! I'd like to see u play every one

  1. I have lived in Latin America for over 20 years.

I'm a white guy from the Cape for the record. (one who's played at Fenway too, soccer allstar game in 1967.)

Manny is obviously upset as there is no new contract deal in the offing.
He's also sticking up for a benched dominican. (small cap lived in sd 3 years)

All you people who were taken in by the do gooder, hippie movement, were just plain taken. posted under a friends name a I fear the thought police
