Manny this morning: 'Nobody has called me'

Posted by David Lefort, Boston.com Staff July 31, 2008 12:35 PM

A few noteworthy tidbits from ESPN to pass along, including some comments from Manny this morning and a report that "progress is being made" toward a deal.

  • "Nobody has called me from Boston, and neither has my agent [Scott Boras]," Ramírez told ESPNdeportes.com. "The only thing I know of a possible trade is what I've seen in ESPN."
  • ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney, citing an executive involved in the conversations regarding Ramirez, reported that progress is being made. The feeling is momentum is building toward completion of a deal.
  • Some commentary from Olney, on ESPN: "If he's not traded by 4 p.m. today, there's a 1 percent chance that he finishes the year with the Red Sox. This has gotten so ugly," said Olney, referencing Ramirez's recent trade demands and lackadiasical play.

  1. I just saw from John Heyman that Manny has approved a trade to the Marlins. If they are asking him to waive his no trade clause, you would have to think this thing is very close to being done.

  1. If you unload Manny, you need someone to pick up some of his production. Bay could definitely do that. Hermida or Willingham could do well too. After watching this Anaheim series though, I think the Sox need to consider going after another starting pitcher.

  1. Manny does not have a no trade clause but as a 10/5 player he has the right to decline a trade. So essentially it can be considered a no trade. Semantics. Lets just hope they get this done. Enough of the loafer. Bad for the clubhouse and look at the result in the team play over the last several weeks. Get Jason Bay a solid player and a lefty reliever for the pen. Manny's out of here by the year end anyway. He's already quit on us. National League is perfect for him and his deadlocks on the Florida sun coast with his bottle of sunscreen. He reminds me of Richie Allen in his later years, great talent but a head case!

  1. I've been a fan of Manny since his rookie year. I think we're all sick of the whining. I look forward to a trade just so this crap stops. He has a chance of leaving his legacy on this game as a great player, but the more he acts like this, whining, and being lazy, he may not leave the legacy he could have.

  1. In my opinion, I dont think manny is gone. He did this before, and everything got worked out. He is going to stay and help the red sox win another title!

  1. Buster Olney is completely blowing things out of proportion. Not running out a play to first place is so ubiquitous in this league, that it can't be the last straw. Barring 2007, we've seen this year after year. Manny is not going to risk scaring off suitors for his free-agency by dumping the rest of 2008 - he knows better and Scott Boras won't let him. My guess is, if the Red Sox don't find a sufficient trade, they won't make an emotional trade and dump him anyway.

  1. Why has Ramirez been ALLOWED to "dog it" the way ESPN showed on one of there programs. Even in this age of the Player;s Association as God, doesn't the team have a right to discipline (suspend, bench) a player who INTENTIONALLY does not give his best effort? Aren't the Red Sox as guilty as Ramirez in allowing him to do the things he's been doing? Aren't the Red Sox as culpable as he is in allowing this "bad Behavior" Just the same old disfunctional Parent-Child relationship, wouldn't you say.
Incidently, where is the so-called leadership in the clubhouse regarding Manny dogging it ? (Varitek, Big Papi etc;)

  1. I am not a fan of Manny's sometimes odd behavior and his unsettling fielding skills. However, I greatly admire his ability to hit the ball over the fence and get paid 20 Million to do so. I don't earn that much nor can I consistently hit the ball over the fence, but I suppose I am making a decent living considering I play about every 5 days. Life is good as a MLB starting pitcher.

  1. Manny needs to be traded.......he is nothing but a distraction and he has quit on us.......He said last night the Sox do not deserve him.....there is no way he can come back. He'll get waived if not traded. We saw his last AB last night.....
