Manny unloads on Sox again

Posted by Gordon Edes, Globe Staff July 30, 2008 08:14 PM

Manny Ramirez had another phone conversation with Enrique Rojas, a reporter for ESPNDeportes, and took more shots at the Sox in an apparent effort to force a trade.

"They haven't asked me for anything," Ramirez was quoted as saying in response to whether the Sox had asked his permission to trade him.

"The Red Sox don't deserve a player like me," Ramirez said. "During my years here I've seen how they [the Red Sox] have mistreated other great players when they didn't want them to try to turn the fans against them.

"The Red Sox did the same with guys like Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez, and now they do the same with me. Their goal is to paint me as the bad guy. I love Boston fans, but the Red Sox don't deserve me. I'm not talking about money. Mental peace has no price and I don't have peace here."

The Sox brass, including ownership, met today to discuss a possible Manny deal. Coming out of that meeting, the belief was that there was only a slim chance of something happening, but they are still talking to clubs, especially the Marlins, so stay tuned.

Update from Gordon Edes at 12:05 a.m.: The Palm Beach Post reported that the Sox had reached a tentative agreement with the Marlins and Pirates in which Manny Ramirez would go to Florida, the Marlins would send OF Jeremy Hermidia to Piitsburgh as part of a multiplayer package, and the Sox would receive OF Jason Bay and LHP Josh Grabow. My sources tell me that is not true, a deal has not been struck, but the sides continue to talk. It may be getting close.

  1. This act is tired. Manny has burned all of his bridges in Boston. Mental peace. Mental midget is more like it.

  1. There is no way Manny said any of that. It's obvious that ESPN did not translate it right because they hate the Red Sox and want us to lose. Nation members know that Manny is a goof ball but we love all of his hijinks and that's really why we go to the games. It's not important if we win, but we like to see the players HAVE FUN and make us laugh. I for one will join in the Fenway boycott and return all of my tickets to the game if they get rid of Manny. He is the heart of Red Sox Nation and you're going to see Fenway Park full of empty seats if he leaves because people will because Marlins Nation members instead!

  1. He's right we don't deserve Manny. We deserve a player with heart and not one who inspite of his great bat is a joke on the field and an embarassment to his manager despite all the times Tito has covered for his BULL SH-T! Send him somewhere and use his 20 million to get some ballplayers with character next year.

  1. I used to be the biggest Manny apologist going. But after his comments the past few days I say good riddance. He needs to learn that the name on the front of the jersey is more important than the one on the back. The Sox have treated him like a king for the past 8 seasons; paying him $160 million and putting up with his embarrassing antics one excruciating episode after another. Manny is ignorant and childish and he needs to go. I say we trade him to the Mets for Trotter...let's get someone in here that actually respects the game, the fans, ownership, his teammates, and the city of Boston.

  1. it's hard to stomach this guy. Can't wait for his career to be over so he can grow a touch of humility. Hey Manny, ask Bonds how well this act works.

For $160,000,000 they've made you into the bad guy? No fan is that hungry or stupid; they'll see right through you no matter where you play. JERK!

  1. Manny certainly has a point. The FO does have a reputation for trashing players in the media. They did it with Nomar, Lowe, Pedro and Damon.

  1. Time to go, Manny. Thanks for the memories. The good ones, anyway. Nobody has been catered to as much as you. But like every spoiled brat who has too much too soon without any discipline along the way, it's never enough.

  1. Let me get this straight...The Red Sox don't deserve a player like Manny. A player that goofs off a play in Anaheim and makes look like a joke, a player that showboats a catch for double play in Baltimore, a guy who goes into the scoreboard last year, and makes a cell phone call during the game. Maybe that is the ONLY thing Manny got right. When this team has a young player like Jacoby Ellsbury that is golden glove caliber (more so than Manny), makes running diving catches, and runs every hit ball like a great player, Jacoby IS better than Manny ever thought of being. Manny being Manny is no longer tolerated. Jacoby Ellsbury is a Hall of Famer for sure, and Manny is nothing more than a mouthpiece for the overpaid stars of MLB.

  1. Good for Manny. They don't deserve him. Just think of how dumb the Sox would look now had they been successful in dumping Manny in '03. They would probably still be looking for the first WS! LOL Well Theo is finally about to get what he always wanted from the first day he arrived.... to be rid of the Great Manny Ramirez. What a shame!

Posted by sandy July 30, 08 09:05 PM
  1. Please Theo.....get rid of the whining, crying, baby man. It's time for Manny to be Manny somewhere else. Right now I'd trade him for a ballbag. We have until 4:00 pm tommorrow to excise this team demoralizing growth from the Sox. Our season depends on it. Even though they're not allowed to say anything in public about Manny, most of the Red Sox players are sick of his crap and would love to see him off this team. Youk's comments the other day when asked about Manny were priceless, "We respect his numbers". They don't respect the man....Bye-Bye Manny!

  1. You have got to be kidding me. Here's Manny Being Stupid, again. Or is that revisionist history again for Boston's beleaguered slugger.

Nomar and Pedro were never made out to be bad guys. Rather, they were treated like Gods, yet never were the true forces behind any meaningful success. Manny helped the Sox win two titles, but he must remember he chose to sign the contract to leave beloved Cleveland. He chose to make stupid comments, making the team justifiably angry. And it is Manny who has, for the past two years, been far from the offensive force that deserves $20 million annually.

It's time to go. Lets hope Manny to FLA for Willingham and pitching prospects, then turning those prospects to PITT for Bay. At this stage in his career, Bay is definitely his offensive equal.

    Posted by Brian G. July 30, 08 09:05 PM
  1. If you can't have mental peace making over $20 million a year, and knowing that if you produce you can make that much again next year for playing a kids game, then maybe you should drive a cab or wait on tables in the real world. Oh, that's right, your a hitting savant and you can barely function outside of stadiums where they arrest your ass for hitting old people. My bad.

  1. Pedro wanted 4 years. The Sox offered 3. Turns out the Red Sox front office was right about his shoulder. We had Pedro at this best and I believe he was treated well and respectfully. He got a better deal - good for him. Nomar was hurt and sulked on the bench while Jeter went into the stands head first on a foul ball. Turns out, the trade energized the Sox and Cabrera was a big part of it at SS. Athletes routinely confuse money and respect. Some times we all do, but not at these levels. Manny can hit like few others. He has a gift. He is also a malcontent pain with the emotional constitution of a spoiled brat. I loved watching all three play, but nobody is bigger than the team and since when does deserve have anything to do with it. They pay him $20M per year for his services.

  1. Red sox does not deserve Manny. I agree with him. They try to paint him as a bad guy.

Theo shook his head and showed faces when Manny dropped the ball and sit on it against Angels. That was obnoxious. Show some respect for what Manny has done to this organization.

I am shaking my head everday thinking about his trades, Lugo, Crisp, Drew, Renteria, Matt Clement, I don't even want to mention all his bullpen trade blunders.

Will he be shaking his head if Lugo(Theo's favourite signing) hits into double play in 9th with 1 out and 2 on base? Will he be shaking his head when Varitek strikes out during critical phases of the game?.

His trade blunders could have cost Red sox so much more if Red sox had not had two guys in the line up. Manny and Ortiz. They make this line up above average.Basically they helped to mask Theo' s signings. This is my strong opinion.

If he had Manny traded in'03, Sox neither would have won world series nor Theo would have had his job till now after all his blunder trades. He should probably thank Manny/Ortiz for saving his tenure in Boston!!!. Seriously, It is really not a stretch to think the way I am thinking.

I think media should also critic Theo for his mistakes, not just Manny. Oh wait, media is going to say his (in)decisions led to 2 World series. Why can't the same media give some love to Manny saying his hitting brought us 2 world series rings. It is unfair.

  1. With all the contending teams in MLB trying to positively add to their rosters, the Red Sox are the ONLY team happily looking for a way to hurt themselves.

Red Sox management, with the local sports media gooning for them, have fanned the flames of hate so high, that trading Ramirez will seem like a GOOD thing - instead of the LAST any Sox fan would want.

The irony in this business is so thick you could cut it with a knife, but if Ramirez is dealt tomorrow, come October several things are predictable.

Ramirez will be in the playoffs.
The Red Sox will be watching on TV
Management will have saved a bunch of $$$$.
The Boston sports media will be bad-mouthing someone else.
And the self-righteous noodle-heads of The Nation will be watching football.

He's right...sox know how to leak info to turn public opinoun..but what Manny doesn't get is he's the highest paid cash player in the game and is supposed to be a leader, but he loafs, begs off playing in big games and series...his behavior hurts the team, insults Tito and poisons the clubhouse

  1. Manny is the biggest idiot in baseball and why the Sox have put up with his crap for this long is beyond me. Sure the guy can hit, but all of his antics and disruptions in the clubhouse are not worth what he is able to produce. Get rid of him and take your chances with younger "coachable" talent!

  1. there is much poison in that statement. the redsox treated pedro like a king. he took advantage of it to become a whiny baby. He was always treated with respect by the organization that paid him handsomely. the sox likewise treated nomar like the elite player he was for the short time he was an elite player. he was well compensated for it and he did turn down 15 mil over 4 years and that was HIS business decision. oh well. and then he whined. manny got a contract and has been paid HOF dollars for HOF numbers. He was treated really well and his antics were loathed but tolerated as long as his OBPS was 1.000 or above but he is not the player he was. he may yet put up some nice numbers but age is against it. so he loafs, whines and complains and disrepects his teammates and the game when he doesnt hustle or stands with a bat on his shoulders against the damnyankees. he should go and the sox should continue with their rebuilding scheme and get younger or become the damnyankees themselves. matt holiday would replace manny nicely.

there will not be another manny for awhile and the curse would not have been busted without him and for that THANK YOU!!! but the game is a business and the sox are a business and you have been giving the sox the business over the last month and its time to move on and hopefully you will depart with class.

  1. "Mental peace has no price and I don't have peace here"? So hang them up, retire, and have your mental peace. I've been a huge Manny fan his entire Red Sox tenure and thought most of the Manny being Manny stuff was overhyped by the media. That said, to say the Red Sox don't deserve him after making somewhere around $160 million from them is biting the hand that has feed him and his family for future generations and is one of the most unjustified comments in the history of sports.
I think Pedro got a bit of a bad rap here and he was an easy one to criticize based on preferential treatment, but he was a pleasure to watch and in his prime, no doubt the best I'll ever see. I never pictured him as "the bad guy", just played by different rules which sorry to say, happens when you are that good.
Sorry Manny, it's time to go. If you're that unhappy, hang them up and go without the paycheck. Nobody is forcing you to play. Better yet, go volunteer or work a 12 hour day getting you hands dirty with something other than dust from a well manicured playing field.

  1. Manny has asked to be traded every year, and he thinks the Red Sox are trying to paint him as the bad guy. What makes Manny the bad guy is not hustling to first base, shoving Red Sox employees, and getting in fights with team mates. I love Manny being Manny, but this is ridiculus. Manny can be Manny in front of 10,000 fans in Miami. At least he won't have any problem getting tickets from the marlins.

  1. I am so tired of Manny's tirades! The Sox have consistently put up with his behavior and antics over many years now and have done their best, particularly Terry Francona, to deal fairly with Manny. I can't imagine that the Yankees would ever have tolerated him this long. He started this season well, relating to the media and playing hard, but his incident with the traveling secretary and his recent carping about how badly they've treated him have worn me out. He has practically made it mandatory to trade him, but if they can't, how will he act for the remainder of the season? He owes it to the fans and his team-mates to work hard and play hard if he is remains here.

  1. Scott Boras must have something to do with this, directly or indirectly. I don't know how true this is, but as I understand, he gets no cut if the Red Sox exercise their 2009 option as the current contract was negotiated by Manny's former agent, Jeff Moorad. Boras stands to gain if Manny's traded and/or becomes a free agent, as he would then make some $$ on the next deal Manny signs. I wonder if there could be any legal ramifications here. Wouldn't this be similar to tampering? I'm sure proving anything would be tough, but this smacks of sleaze.

Manchild Ramirez has finally exhausted all of his 8th-grade intellect and horribly absent insight on decent folks like me who just want to see a well-paid player do his job and contribute favorably to his team.

I'm sorry, but this is absurd. I have been decrying this situation long before all my stats-loving friends, who thought that as long as he "puts up the numbers" he is ok.

His production numbers are falling, he is a distraction to his teammates and an insult to sensible people everywhere, and if the Sox ever want to have their own "mental peace" they should banish this fool into another, lower realm where all his fallacious insults are left on less-deserving ears.

    And he looks like muppet!

  1. Manny is absolutely correct with this statement. No matter what you think of Manny or his actions, it has been the Sox management that pushed this to the brink. Instead of handling it internally and having a consistent public stance (like some other local teams), the management sends emails to the press and starts a whisper campaign. Who leaked the stories out? It wasn't a player. Just like with Pedro and Nomar, the favorite reporters are given juicy stories to make the star player with a big contract look bad. Then after it all is leaked out, the management issues a gag order? What a joke.

Get ready now, because this will happen again. Wait until Papelbon is up for free agency, or maybe Beckett. They will be the next victims of the front office hit squad.

Posted by bk July 30, 08 09:48 PM
  1. For once, Manny is right, the Red Sox don't deserve a player like Manny Ramirez, they deserve a lot better. They deserve a player who runs out every ground ball. They deserve a player who does not take days off whenever he feels like it. They deserve a player who consistently gives his all to the team and the game. Maybe there aren't many players in the league left like that, but I know there are several of on the Red Sox, namely David Ortiz, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jason Varitek, Kevin Youkilis, and Dustin Pedroia to name a few. Now some of them may have only one tenth of the natural ability that Manny has, but they give everything they have every night. I'll take one player of average talent who's consistently going to give me everything every night, over ten extremely talented players who are going to try only when he feels like it. It's no coincidence that Manny went on waivers a few years back and nobody claimed him. He is not worth twenty million dollars. It's time to trade him and get something in return, even if it's only a marginally talented player. The Red Sox, don't deserve Manny, they deserve a lot better. Get a player who will give his all every night and let the pieces fall where they may. That's enough for this Red Sox fan.

Come on TeK ?? Come on Youk !! Come on Papi !! Get this guy onboard or help get him out of here. I want one of the team leaders to make a public statement on how they really feel about this guy and how he is bringing the team down at this point. He has been great for the Red Sox but he has worn out his welcome. Thanks for being part of a Champion but leave now as a whine ass loser!!!

Baseball is a business thanks to the Players Association. You got $160,000,000 for eight years of playing a game we, with less talent, would play for $50,000 a year. Okay, $10,000 a year. Take your head out of your a_ _. There is no loyalty in the game. You deserve nothing. What have you done for me lately. You want respect? Cash the checks, bust your butt and shut the f_ _ k up. You couldn't have "mental peace" in any place other than MannyWorld. I saw Ted Williams play. I saw Pumpsie Green get abused for being black. I saw Bill Buckner castrated for busting his butt through an injury. They all have my respect. You have haven't even earned my disgust. Time for you to return to Ork and report to Orson. Have a nice trip.

I will not bore the readers with the plethora of ridiculous antics, and unforgivable selfish actions that you have treated your team mates with. Yes you hot the ball well many times... but your lazy ass running the bases, and faking injuries has a sour taste in my mouth. You will NEVER get a contract for what YOU say you're worth ($100,000,000 for 4 years)..... Tito, Theo, and John Henry know, just as your teammates know, that your act is that of a liar (the knee excuse) and a malcontent who doesn't care about his teammates or the ideals of baseball.

  1. No one can afford to go to a game because of greedy people like Manny. The only kids you see at a game are rich kids. The only fans you see in Boston are rich and white.

People at home can't possibly afford an MRI and the Sox send Manny for an MRI on each knee to see if he's faking. What an embarassment.

  1. Manny is right actually. John Henry and Theo run the Sox with an iron fist - and finally Manny is bringing this out to the open. As much as I love the Sox, I think Manny has a great point. Win a few championships - we're all jaded but let's not forget this is a business and Manny is an employee and he certainly has a right to criticize ownership JUST LIKE ANY OF YOU WITH YOUR BOSS except you don't have a MEDIA to play around with like Sox Mgmt and Manny do. This is a public relations nightmare for both sides. I think Theo and John Henry deserve this nightmare.

  1. It's pretty simple. Trade Manny if they get superior value, keep him if they don't. The Sox have all the leverage w/ the 2 year options. Manny is supposedly dumb but he's manipulating his way out of his obligation b/c he sees more money in a long term deal now. Sounds like Manny's pretty bright to me. Bottom line is Manny is a hard worker, he covets a place in the game's history and he loves to hit. If he tries to dump out on a bogus injury attack his wallet. This team is going nowhere anyways unless they shore up the bullpen.

Posted by Brendan July 30, 08 10:21 PM
  1. If the Sox front office were managers who dealt better with humans than numbers, they would have been smarter in the way they dealt with Manny's recent statements. They could have called him in right after he said the stuff around the All_Star Break and tried to make him feel that they were doing something. Instead, Lucchino reproached him in public and the front office fed the press a bunch of innuendo. It seems to me that they had already decided to try and make Manny feel unwelcome. If I was a player on the Sox with a contract coming up in the next couple years, I would be paying close attention to the scenario that has unfolded around Manny the past couple weeks and it wouldn't make me very comfortable.

Jason Bay is a MINOR downgrade at the plate (but look at what the monstah did for Lowell last two years), and a HUGE upgrade defensively. Consider that we would have control of him for three years, and a guy who would wake up tomorrow on a contender for the first time in his career and you have a guy willing to lay down across train tracks to win a series!! Save the difference in Manny's option and give it to Pedroia, Ellsbury, and Papelbon...

He's an artist. Varitek punching A-Rod was a wonderful turn-around. Losing Manny will be the wrong kind of turn-around. I understand all the negative comments but they are knee-jerk and short-sighted. You will miss him when he's gone. The Papi-Manny combo was a miracle. Those who are jumping on the media's anti-Manny bandwagon are just insuring that the 08 team will fade into oblivion. Long term, who knows what will happen, But for the rest of this year, it doesn't matter, as the heartless fools have sucked all the life out of the team. Thanks, Manny, and we will miss you for a long time.

  1. You all really need to calm down and laugh at the theater this is. The central character in this comedy is a fellow of low intelligence, overweight, and clearly lazy and quite self-centered, but with great eye-hand coordination and an uncanny ability to hit a baseball. That's all it is. Make of it what you want; defend him or vilify him and / or his agent. Realize though that the Red Sox organization, Ramirez, Boras, and many others in the entertainment industry we call baseball sleep very well at night with the profits they reap. The rest of us should focus on the real worries -- impending inflation, a recession, declining value of the most valuable assets all of have (houses), and leaving a world that is worse off for our children than the one we inherited, with global warming, rampant pollution of our environment, declining food supplies, etc. Whether or not this simple baseball player is traded or not is really not important relative to all the work we need to do. Focus on what is important, and to relax, try to enjoy the show (entertainment) this entire charade is.

Roger "misremebered" Clemens was about the money. Manny's actions are all being orchestrated by Scott Boras. Boras doesn't make a dime unless Manny signs a new contract. The players and the players union have too much power in these situations. Manny wants to create a circus...trade him to Ringling Bros. for a couple of clowns. Manny is a friggin' 36 year old man-baby. It's time for some other town to wipe his sorry ass. If some other town wants to pay him "25 million worth of respect a year for 4 years", let them. Manny, thanks for the memories and bye bye. ..For players like Manny it's about the money, for fans it's about the uniform. We and the Red Sox will survive quite well, just like we did when the other 2-faces left town because of an apparent "lack of respect"......I mean MONEY!!

Then his agent will try to get a dumb team to give him a long term contarct still around the $15 to $17 million a year. Maybe the Yankees. So who cares. I do hope they trade him, and dont keep him around any more. Let the other guys play with peace in thier minds knowing they can play baseball and not worry what Manny is going to do.

The team WILL lose more games without him. When the team starts finishing third every year I want to hear everyone say well they lost again but did you see how everyone ran hard to first on theirground outs. On the sports radio today I heard Manny has less RBI's the last three years than he did the prior three years. They forgot to mention how many less runners were on base thelast three years with Ortiz batting in front of him. When he is gone he will be missed.

The Sox are going to miss him terribly. Think about it....who is going to give the Sox those numbers? Jacoby? No. Coco? Not a chance. Dustin? JD? Youk? Mike Lowell? Nope. Those 4 are good, but not Manny. Despite all the crap he gets about his fielding, he's been known to make great plays in left. Also, his gets rids of the ball surprisingly fast.

  1. Paint you as the bad guy? The media and the FO doesn't make you dog it to first, flop on top of fly balls you should have caught, keep the bat on your shoulder for three straight down the pike, push down staff members, fake a knee injury or hit teammates. That isn't fabricating stories about clubhouse chemistry like nomar or crazy Pedro midgets, be that true or not. The red sox brass is the problem? as for the brass, I'll believe they have some when they finally dump your headcase. Manny, you could have walked out at the end of this year a two (maybe 3) time world series winning hero that got cheered more than Roberts when he came back every time you showed your face at fenway probably even if you went to the yankees. I am a huge fan of Manny's because some of his antics reminds everyone that its just a game AND he is a hall-of-famer at the same time. The sox won't win without him this year and he will make tons more money in his next contract, which won't be with Boston, if he plays to his talent level and takes them deep into the playoffs. Can't we all at least pretend to get along for everyone's sake for a few more months?

  1. I know the Nation, and myself included are torn tonight. Watching the hated Yankees pick up three proven and dependable players for their push, and watching the reeling Sox do nothing but talk about unloading their best hitter, yes best, is a shame. I know Manny is playing into Boras's evil hands and saying what he can to get out of the sometimes harsh media spotlight in Boston. Truth be told he would be happier in a market like Florida where he just has to play without his every at bat, idiotic rant, or miscue gets major attention and criticism. I guess I am not as upset that Manny's time has come, as I am that they will basically weaken their team when they are 3 games out and have had a legitimate shot at the division. The Yankees moves have been major to make it happen, the Sox move will be desperate to get rid of him and no way they will get good value or anyone that can help this year more than he could...if he wanted to produce. It aggravates me that when this is all said and done, the Sox will have sacrificed 2008, the Yankees will be surging past them, and Manny will cash in next year...and possibly end up in left for the Yankees. No matter what impulsive move Theo makes out of spite, it doesn't help them this year and we all know it. But, we also know that Manny's mind is made up and Boras is stoking the fire so he gets his big cut of his next contract. Sometimes you have to cut a man loose...but it is the fans that bleed with them nightly that will pay the biggest price if they trade him for an inferior package of young players. Are we rebuilding? Hell no, so get a marquee player in return, or suck it up and just bench him. Any way this ends, it ends bad for the Sox. It is a sad night in Beantown.

  1. The FO has some flaws, I agree. But, Pedro was a spoiled primadonna, Nomar acted like a sulking baby, and Manny is a spoiled child. All three acted selfishly. Get rid of Manny; trade the boy for a man.

  1. its Just Dum to trade the Man who Makes that Lineup Dangerous! With out Manny Ramirez Who's going to Protect David Ortiz...Pitcher are going to have Fun with who ever Takes Manny's Spot in the lineups... The Red Sox Front Office Need to Suck Up their Pride and Let the Guy Work.. who cares what he does.. he still Puts up hes Numbers... To Be Honest I don't see Us making the playoff if Manny Is traded.

  1. The people that have commented about Manny's are out of touch. Comparing his salary to every day workers is crazy, try comparing him to other baseball players. At 20 million a year he is a bargain. There are many other players being paid that and more, many of those do not put up the numbers Manny does. Ask Cleveland fans if they wish Manny had stayed there. The ones I know after eight years wonder how many more games they would have won with him

  1. The Red Sox Suck anyway.... hey - now the good old Yankees will kill them every game for the rest of the season and the Red Sox will fall to the basement of the AL East

Posted by NY Yankees July 30, 08 11:18 PM
  1. Several things to remember:
FIrst, Manny is acting like the FO is trying to make him look bad. What a crock. Manny has brought all of this on himself. He is a great player, but an idiot.
Second, Francona has done a marvelous job in keeping his clubhouse together during this great stretch of years, which includes mainly dealing with Manny's BS. But Tito's ability to put out all these fires is waning because of Manny and his lack of caring. Look at Youkilis, Lowell, Tek, Pedroia, etc., who bust it every day and at the same time watch Manny not care. The ship is sinking because the clubhouse is in turmoil - because they have a key guy who gets paid $20 mil and doesn't care or respect the game.
Tito knows, the FO and ownership know. Manny has worn out his welcome. Manny, thanks for helping us to two WS titles, but it's time you go screw up someone else's clubhouse.

Posted by James July 30, 08 11:20 PM
  1. Brian G - if you think that Bay is Manny's equal you need to check your head. Manny is a marquee player who is a constant threat at the plate.
Regarding your comment about Nomar and Pedro? You're wrong . . they were both trashed in the media (indirectly by the FO) prior to their being traded/let go.
this team needs all the offense they can get, which is why Theo should have traded for Texeira. In my opinion, he should've sent Youk packin' for the likes of Texeira. Youk is above average but will never be a marquee player like Texeira.
Bottom line? You don't trade a player like Manny in the midst of a pennant race. Or, should I say when the team is fighting to get into the playoffs?

Posted by brendan July 30, 08 11:21 PM
  1. Why can't he just play ball and be quiet... Letting Pedro go was the best thing the sox ever did - he was another one who just bitched and complained to the media all the time. Nomar had to go - we loved him personally but he was always always getting injured.

The bottom line is that both moves were very good business decisions. The best thing the sox could do is keep him and leave him on the bench.

    What a self centered ass

  1. If anyone really turns their tickets in can I have them? Bye Manny. I don't care if the Sox win this year or not. Two WS in my lifetime...I can die happy. The Red Sox are no longer *my* team. That died when all of these so-called *fans* erupted from the earth after they did win a WS. How many of them watched Game 7 in 2003? I'm betting very few.
So, goodbye Manny, it's been a great ride. Thanks for all your offense, your occasional defense, and the crazy hijinks.

  1. hey ken 87? umm why would managment want the fans to not like manny? you havent explained why a tem who isnt going to pic up the 20 mil option on an againg hall of famer, would need to turn the fans against him? hes gone , finito, out of the picture at te end of the season anyway, so what possibl reason could the red sox have for turning the fans against manny?

dont bother answering, because you cant, manny is a pirma donna baby who does nothing for the community nor his team, look next door to him in the lineup and see Big Papi, the man who hads more cluthch heroics than many will ever have. and he treatsthe fans like gold, and kids like they are amazing, look what he did to his minor league teams during his rehab starts... manny would never do that, end of story. manny is getting old and makes more money than anyone in baseball besisdes a rod. you telling me thats mistreatment?

on and matt at#85, you might want to recheck your figures, first the african american thing, you know jackie robinson said in an interview on espn on the anniversary of breaking the color barrier, that he was a black ballplayer, not an african american ballplayer, wonder if he still counts? and by the way the red sox are not 2 and 91 idiot there have been 102 world series, since the first in 1903 ( which the red sox won i might add) so officially it would be 95 and 7

now to you ..people who say we should just keeop manny, umm at 20 mil a year for what? he has faked injuries repeatedly, he wont run the bases, he beats up old men ( the traveling secretary, attacks youkillis, tonight he caught a flyball and ran intot cotrner with it and jogged around while a run scored and another guy walked, and i do mean WALKED to third. manny is a disgrace to the heroes of baseballs past. he has amazing talent but cares nothing for the game or the fans, only his wallet. Anyone who doesnt think so doesnt get the fact that manny thinks he is going to get 100 mil plus for 3 years after this season from another team. well id love to see the yankess get him, and get ripped off just like omar minaya did with pedro and he dodgers did with nomar. how those guys working out for ya?
give me and honest team who tries hard, and hustles and doesnt pee inside the green monster, oh and Ken, many was in left both times, but by that logic then who ws catching? oh wait the cap'n, and you know both tim wakefield and curt schilling both pitched thier butts off in those series as well. that probably doesnt matter right? i really hope this pittsburgh deal is done, bye bye manny dont let the door int he monster hit you in the ... on the way out. hope you like florida. your teammates wont.

  1. How many of us think that Manny's going to put as much effort into the rest of the season as he has during the past seasons if he doesn't get his way?

I think we saw our answer in the last night when he didn't hustle down to first in the 7th inning. Not to mention what's went on during the past couple of weeks.

Face it, we've all loved Manny, but as mentioned before, there comes a time when the name on the front means more than the name on the back. Are we Red Sox fans or Manny fans?

Posted by Shane July 30, 08 11:35 PM
  1. Enough is enough! No team or organization can prosper with a player like Manny who is only interested in his personal goals. He has let down his teammates and the team over and over when he decides he doesn't want to play. The Red Sox should run him out of town ASAP. A quick good bye to a spoiled child.

No one is "playing" in Iraq--that is the real world and the real heroes.
Manny has outstayed his welcome in New England.

Posted by marge July 30, 08 11:42 PM
  1. Who are you front-running, jealous frauds going to blame when Manny's gone? Oh, don't fret, you'll quickly fine someone else or just follow Shaughnessy's pathletic lead.

Manny's annual trade deadline pout session has effectively taken the onus and spotlight away from the fact that Crisp, Lowell, Ellsbury, Drew and Varitek are not hitting the ball with any authority or consistency. Tek is just embarrassingly awful. I feel sad for the once proud captain. His bat is painfully slow; he looks lost, a lot. Lugo, in my humble estimation, is the worst every day player in the AL. He's dead from the neck up.

You can intelligently debate whether Manny is still part of the solution, but he's certainly not the culprit for the Sox problems this year. Manny hasn't changed, but for some reason the majority of the fans' atttiude toward him has. Many of you are looking for a scapegoat.

Williams, Pesky, Doerr, Cronin, Yaz, Lynn, Rice, Nomar, Clemens never won a World Series title. Manny has. Twice. Hey, I know he had a lot of help. Those players will always be remembered fondly. I'm just having trouble fathoming how and why many of you have turned on him so quickly.

Posted by KG July 30, 08 11:44 PM
  1. hmm , we drove nomar and pedro and damon out of town?
    lets get the facts straight,

    1. pedro had a problem with curt schilling, pedro coudnt stand to not be number one. in his last sox year he was 16-9 with a 3.90 era. hardly amazing, he wanted 18 mil for that.he signed with the mets and the next year he had 15-8 with a good era. but he never had double digit wins ever again in his career. the mets paid 80 million for a guy who won 30 games over 4 seasons, yep thats right 7.5 a year. as in 20 million for say kasem gabbard or julian tavares. and that was a bad thing to let him go?
    2. Nomar -my fav player of all time, but he demanded the trade not the other way around, if you remember nomars wife, refused to leave the west coast and nomar had no choice. nomar in 2004 endded up in only 81 games total, between the sox and cubs. he has had only 2 partially full seasons since then, well 2/3 of a season each, he has never been able to stay healthy nor put up nomar ttype numbers again. he just came back from the dl only to go right back on yet again. and all thse injuries and no player and he wanted 16 mil a year. hmm do you see a pattern?
    3. This one is easy- johnny damon never even gave the sox a chance to pay him what he wanted. the yankess made him an offer and damon took it without even allowing the red sox to counter offer. if you dont belive me , do a little research, damons own agent is quoted many times as saying the took new york offer on the spot because the yankess told then they would rescind the offer if damon went to the sox with it. so nyah nyah.
so lets see, we got rid of nomar in 2004 and we won the world series.
we got rid of pedro after 2004 and the mets got ripped off. damon ran to the yankess in 2005 and all we got was yet another world series victory two seasons later. and damon got...money and a bad reputation.
nice to see that the people who attack the red sox o front office know anything about what they speak..oops NOT!

  1. In short, Manny is 36 going on four. He doesn't deserve to play in a great city like Boston. If it were left to me, he'd be gone yesterday. In an average season, Manny receives more than $31,000 per at bat. And the dog can't hustle for ninety feet??
Ultimately, we all pay his salary and that's the least he could do. BTW, isn't there a character clause for Cooperstown? If I were a sportswriter, I would never cast one of my votes for a guy who has quit on his teammates not once, but multiple times. If that's the attitude needed for the HOF, then Carl Everett's a shoo-in.

  1. the fo isnt making him out to be a bad guy jogging down the line during a no hitter is making him look like the bad guy. He wants his 100 million dollar 4 year deal after this year dogging down the line, trashing your management and faking injuries so you dont have to play isn't how you go about playing in a contract year. He should keep his mouth shut and play baseball or get out and keep his act up somewhere else.

  1. Let's see, the team is in a slump and the economy is even worse. Manny has made $160M over the years. Clearly, he is a great hitter, but not much of a team player. He decides whether he wants to play or not. How many teams would put up with the cell phone breaks in the wall. I think that the fans have about had it...when the team is winning it is easy to overlook the oddities. When the team is not, distractions like this are not helpful.

Face it Manny, you are on the back side of your career and losing friends fast. Have some empathy for the fans that scrape together the money to support your outrageous salary and just keep your mouth shut. No one has sympathy for a rich whiner!

  1. He is a total fraud. We fans don't deserve to have to listen to the whining of this self-centered, clearly delusional spoiled brat. The Red Sox deserve better from someone who has gleefully cashed their checks for all these many years. He wasn't bitching on his way to the bank now was he? There was no WS until Schilling got here - not when Manny made his appearance in 2001, nor in 2002, nor in 2003. Jack McCormick didn't shove himself to the ground, he was assaulted. Enough already - what a miserable example for children to observe. His act is not funny, it is not endearing, it is pathetic. Don't let the door hit you in the a** on your way out. Good bye and good riddance.

  1. Hes right, the red sox and especially the fans don't deserve a player like him because no one appreciates what he does. 2 WS in 4 years. All you Manny haters will be crying 86 years from now about how we never win blah blah blah. Red Sox nation is a joke and all these "fans" need to learn the game of baseball. Most Red Sox fans don't know the game and are an embarrasment.

MANNY DOESN'T HUSTLE. NEVER PICK A PLAYER WHO DOESNT HUSTLE.

    Posted by E July 31, 08 12:38 AM
  1. Some of Manny's behavior has been indefensible, but all his comments that I read are right on. There is a post Yawkey tradition of having media lackeys trash stars that are too expensive: Clemens, Boggs, Vaughn. The new syndicate has made it an art form. Damon, Nomar, Pedro, Lowe aside, Trot can't hit lefties. Isn't Varitek looking a little old in his contract year? What if Papi wanted to get paid the way other hitters that put up similar numbers do? Boston traded its baseball soul for two World Series and now all we have is a business. Manny is just pointing that out. They'll keep him because they need him. Bobby Bonds won't agree to their price. Whether Manny goes or not there are no special values at Fenway beyond what you would find in a board room or a cattle auction.

And frankly Manny is pissing me off with his mouth. I always thought he was cute with his naieve childlike way, and his lack of concern for money, but now I see him as a 3 year old temper tantrum.

And it's funny you don't see the "Richest Team In Baseball" shooting for Manny, who thinks he is all that, why? Playing the game with joy and zest and fun not good enough for you? Why shouldn't he ask to be traded if he does not feel valued here? Why should he care about the fans if the "Fans" turn on him like rabid dogs when he expresses an opinion they don't agree with.

How much money has he raised for charity? How much fun has he brought to watching even so/so games? How many RBIs, Home Runs, Great Catches would be good enough for the whiny nasty foul-mouthed "Fans" leaving comments here.

Manny being Manny is better baseball than any of you deserve. Go watch paint dry and leave baseball to those of us who appreciate excellence, joy, and fun.

Manny's act really is tired. He's gone from a lovable comic figure, to a crazed but harmless relative, to a bore. He's proving that one person can upset and derail an otherwise united team.
Get him out of here. Proof that he's an idiot: Think of how other team-owners value Ramirez when it's contract time. (let's see...he quit on his team more than once, fakes injuries, scandalizes an otherwise respected management.....oh, sure, let's give him another twenty million a year. Please! Manny will not be a Red Sox fan as of the end of the year, GARANTEED!!!

Manny WILL end up in NYC, making over $20million a year.

For the FO Manny is as good as dead.

For Scott Boras the end of 2008 means, More money for him and Manny.

Imagine, Manny and A-Rod in the same team?

Manny is our Babe Ruth, when he leaves so will the Titles.

  1. EXPOSE these liars, Manny. The liars who leaked the false info to Lobel. A week or so ago, Chad Finn inferred it was Lucchino setting up that sick tableu.

EXPOSE the hypocrites who leaked the McCormick affair, who leaked the anger managment punsihment to Gammons, the 'team sources' who just leaked the request to the DL to Cafardo. These are the same people who hide behind 'club policy - 'protecting the player' charade - then go behind their backs and poison the well,

Rob Bradford published a story yesterday all Sox fans should read. It was about how Manny hired Boras to find out what the option plans were - only to learn as early as last August, the decision had been made not to pick either option up.

But they just wouldn't be straight with their Hall of Ffame slugger - 2004 WS MVP - even in this season which should have been his glory hiitng the 500th hr - they wouldn't let him have the simple security of knowing either way where he and his family would be next season..

Theo and Lucchino are imo, disgusting..and I'm suspecting not much better of ownership these days. The press the Sox control, from tthe NESN stooges to the Globe-Times connection to Gammons up in his private box courtesy of John Henry results in a horrendous media blitz of viciousness against any player who dares cross the FO. For a player as unsophisticated as Ramirez - it's childplay to drive him more batty than he usually is.

Shame on the organization. They aren't happy just to let a player go - like Pedro and Nomar before Manny, the currenbt management feels compelled to savage a playr as he goes out - with leaks, lies, and press shills - and why?

Because the GREEDY things might sell one less shirt or ticket when a popular player is released?

    Yup.

  1. The beautiful, fearsome Ortiz-Manny 1-2 combination could go down in history as one of the best but alas, looks like it will be no more. I'm going to miss Manny's bat--and especially the fact that he is an absolute Yankee killer, just like Ortiz. Two Yankee killers back-to-back--I have a feeling the entire Yankee organization (and American League) will be jumping for joy if/when Manny leaves Boston. I think Ortiz-Manny makes for an intimidating combination. Will the Sox strike fear into opposing pitchers with just Ortiz in the lineup? Don't know much about Jason Bay.

And did Manny really say "The Red Sox don't deserve a player like me"? Is he kidding? They're giving him, what, $168,000,000? That's more money than any of us are ever going to see. What an ingrate! I've enjoyed watching Manny homeruns and doubles and even that high-five to the fan after he caught the ball but lately he's been saying things and causing alot of unnecessary drama. Enough is enough. If he's going to be a malcontent he needs to go. What the Sox will lose in offensive production they will hopefully gain in better chemistry and a more tightly knit, more focused group. I think the Sox still have the talent to win the World Series without Manny, but everyone else, from starters to relievers to the position players, need to step it up a bit. It would be amazing if the Sox were to win the whole thing without Manny. But one step at a time, as they might not even make the playoffs given the way they've been playing for the last month.

  1. Manny hasn't looked like he has been giving his all for about a month and a half. He makes $13000.oo per inning the sox can do much better than that. can Manny hit...sure. can Manny play left field...yes................is Mannys timming alittle off yes. Manny maybe you should pull your giant head out of your ass and realize your getting older and you should be getting smarter. Almost forgot, try to run out the balls that aren't home runs and don't stand there like you have never seen a ball go that far again. RDsox9

  1. Manny is a fantastic hitter, and I love watching him hit.
    But........
Manny is the Maradona(Argentine soccer player in the 80s and 90s) of Baseball. One of the best players in the world, but a total moron.
He has been great for Boston, but the right time to leave always comes around. Now is that time. Without a confirmed extension of his current contract, which is just not going to happen, he seems intent on dragging the team down with his self-centred, and delusional behavior. He clearly believes his next contract is bigger than the team goals for the season.
Manny, check your stats. You are in decline, yet you want a four year 100 mil deal!!(cause for an immediate drug test! LSD perhaps?!).
As a business, can anyone seriously blame the FO for not picking up his options right now? With 20million in their pockets for next season, why wouldn't they chase a marque player who is on the way up? Matt Holliday would put up the numbers, and doesn't have a disfunctional personality.

  1. In today's game, Manny smoked a line drive to left field. He stood at the plate and watched the left fielder catch it, then walked to the dugout. He disgraced himself, he disrespected the game, and he cheated the fans who have stuck with him all these years. How can ANYONE continue to defend this spoiled, selfish baby!

  1. If there is an example of a team player out there please dont look to Manny to exhibit it. I have watched him play and to me, if the ball doesnt leave the park or come within 25 ft of him in the field then he has little interest in even moving. I am so sick and tired watching Manny lope down the base line.

Bottom line...get rid of the guy. He is not a player, he is not a part of the TEAM, he is a self centered piece of dreck. The Sox didnt sour me to Manny, Manny soured me to Manny

  1. Red Sox fans are no different than Yankee fans. Manny will be discarded (after years of admiration) just like Nomar, Pedro, Mo, and let's not forget the the classy treatment Bill Buckner received after the 1986 W.S. His return to Fenway this year does not erase the disgraceful way he was treated.

Posted by Rich Guitard July 31, 08 04:35 AM
  1. First, Manny is not lazy. He's one of the hardest working hitters in baseball. Granted, he doesn't work on his fielding very often, but he does play the wall well. Second, he has brought all of this on himself - the McCormick thing, sitting out with the knee, all the recent comments and everything else. I love Manny being Manny, but stuff is different - he wasn't having fun - he was being destructive.

Lastly, don't hate on Theo and the FO. They have delivered 2 WS (with a lot of help from Manny). They treated Nomar, Damon, and Pedro well while they were here. Nomar certainly sulked during his last year here and it took a LOT of guts for Theo to trade him. Also, Damon and Pedro were offered great contracts - the teams from NY overpaid them and they took the money. So all the people saying they are racists or disloyal are plain wrong. They simply put an accurate value on their players and didn't overpay for past performance they weren't likely to duplicate.

  1. Do you really think Manny could've written the Brett Favre sign? No way he has the intelligence to spell all the words correctly. He's a frick'n moron w/ no edumacation who has had his butt kissed his entire life.

I really wish my company would not appreciate me to the tune of $160 million. That would be total disrespect.

Good riddance. I'll take my chances without him for the rest of the season. You know he will quit in September when the Sox will really need him. He'll have them over a barrel. It's not only a disrespect to the fans who pay his salary, but to his teammates.

    So long a-hole.

  1. I agree with Manny. John Henry's "personally offensive" comment/email in response to Manny's griping seemed to ignite the flame, was out of line for a principal owner and, in my opinion, a calculating remark meant to set the stage for what has followed. You expect more from someone of his stature.

  1. Reliable sources tell me that 2 weeks ago, Boras approached the FO to see whether their was interest in a contract extension for Manny which would have kept him in Boston through 2012, and that he was basically told there was no chance of that happening. What happened from there is well documented - TOTAL MADNESS.

  1. Manny has been great to watch over the years. It has been refreshing to see someone play with so much fun and intensity.

Yes- there have definitley been issues over the years. However I think it's great to see a player laugh after he messed up. He also has the ability to get back up there and make up for his mistakes.

I am going to miss Manny in our lineup day after day. Even if he stays he already is not the same - his heart isn't here anymore.

I for one, thank Manny for all the years of hard work and his help with bringing 2 world series titles to Boston.

I hope the FO helps keep guys like Manny with the team for their whole career. I know its not easy. I'm really sad to see the old Manny go.

Thanks for all the great times!!! Good luck in the future...

Manny has pushed things way too far. Despite how grateful we are of the 2 WS and all the HRs, you can't have a player acting like this.

Professional sports is so competitive unless everybody is pulling 100% in the same direction it doesn't work and you can't be the best. I believe in recent times alot of Manny's good bat swinging has been undone with his other actions on and off the field.

Last time i checked the contractual options were with the Red Sox, he's not in a position to be making any demands. I am surprised there are any takers for him.

Not meaning any disrespect. Appreciate it is a sensitive issue for all

  1. The Manny defenders need to remove the blinders....Manny is not the ONLY reason why the Sox won the World Series! The act of "I'm going" "I'm Staying" is tiresome. His lack of effort in the field and running out a ground ball is clearly evident. Why must the Red Sox be the only team in baseball that allow the showboating Manny does....are there any other teams that allow the shenanagins that Manny pulls in the field.

Posted by fbonfilio July 31, 08 06:23 AM
  1. interesting comments here, several even deal with the facts. think everyone should take a look at manny's numbers for the last few years. yes they are still good, but you can see that they are starting to drop.
manny brought this upon manny, nothing new but a bit more serious this time. it starts by smacking youk a hard working die for the team fan favorite, then knocking down a 65 year old man over free tickets (you make 20mil a year and cry over free tickets?) then he starts running his mouth, then turns a popup into a triple and laughs about it. then the ultimate, verbally smack the owner who has been the man keeping you around alll this time when others want you gone.
manny is now poisen in the club house, ya this is a team game remember? his teamates have kept quite, but you can see the tension in the dugout (great to be on national tv all the time)! now he says the red sox did dirt on former players? well manny guess what, two of those guys (pedro and damon) left for more money, the sox did nothing to them except realized they were past their primes and the decisions have proven correct. as far as nomar ( i personally loved this guy), he was poisen to the team when they dumped him! just like you are now! it now longer matters what you can do, you have turned the team into a circus with your act. and the poisen pills your passing out are killing your teamates heart and souls. i wish you the best where ever you go, but i sure do hope you go!

  1. If trading Manny Ramirez would make you root for the Yankees, you deserve them, and him. You're not a Sox fan, you're just a fan of a simpleminded child who thinks the grass is greener elsewhere. It isn't. The Sox have long tolerated Manny's baggage because of his production, but let's face it -- he's no longer one of the top hitters in the game. His numbers are pretty much the same as Bay's, Drew's and even Youk's. The difference? Those guys play hard. Manny is a joke. Go into the HOF as an Indian and leave, please.

  1. I can't help thinking, if the Red Sox were 3 games in 1st rather than 3 games out, Sox fans would be saying, "Well, that's Manny being Manny!" He might be a goof ball but that goof ball can flat out hit and was a major contributor to your championships!

Posted by Rich Guitard July 31, 08 06:40 AM
  1. As Peter Gammons wrote, Manny's all about the money. A selfish, self centered, greedy, spoiled brat of a player. I suppose shoving an old man down because he didn't have 20 tickets for M's friends at the last minute wasn't reason enough to get rid of him. I suppose fighting with Youkilis in the dugout wasn't enough either. I think we don't even know half of the dissension that has come about on the Red Sox team as a result of Manny's nonsense. When they were winning it was easy to laugh at his antics. But they ain't winning lately. And Manny, thanks for playing with your 'sore' knee. It's time for the millionaire to make his big dough elsewhere. Thanks for the memories.

  1. The real goof balls are the fans who are trashing Manny. The guy is the single best non-steroid hitter of our generation. In baseball, all that matters is the result on the field, not whether you like someone's personality or not. That's why personal life disasters like guys like Ruth, Foxx, Mantle, and Williams, Cobb, etc are still legends. I have been to Fenway half a dozen times this year. Manny gets the loudest cheers--why? Because he works hard at being good. And people know it. He is a hitting machine who has never been accused of steroids, drugs, somestic violence, strip joint fights, drunk driving, gambling, sexual assault, etc.
Grow up Manny haters. He has $160m in the bank and 500 homers. You'd take an arrogant bargaining position for you next contract if you were in the same position.

Thanks Manny for two series victories and many great games. Francona and Youkilis wouldn't have rings if it weren't for you.

You can't. No one from the Sox front office has said one bad word about Manny. Unless you count baseball writers and columnists as part of the Sox front office. And what the media has said about Manny is accurate.

Just suck it up and admit it. Manny has the IQ of a baseball bat and is a moron on top if it.

Manny is done here, and now it's time for him to fade away like pedro did when he jumped ship.

If they can't, then he'd better get to work on showing why another team should pay him $100M for 4 because right now he's not looking worth the $20M for 1 that his option would pay.

I still love watching Petey pitch and it's o.k. that it's in Queens. I can do the same with watching Manny bat except that there's not a lot of NL ball on TV where I live.

  1. None of you have the guts to actually not show up to Fenway because they decide to trade Manny. The fact is that if you turn your tickets in that people will take them and Fenway will still be full. You have the guts to call people greedy and then you want to be repaid for your tickets. You bought the tickets so people like me have to pay 200% above face value to go to the Fens when you don't feel like it but we do buy them because we support the Red Sox Nation. Players, managers, and owners come and go but true Nation members like me will always be with the Sox. If you think that you have it tough try being a Nation member that was born and live in the state of New York. I have been here in enemy territory for all of the 35 years of my life. If you are going to boycott then good riddance to you the Nation will not miss you one bit.

  1. Major Leaugue Baseball is an entertainment business. Manny is an entertainer. Every show, every team needs its characters. Manny is a character. Besides producing on the field, Manny entertains, providing light-hearted moments, big plays in addition to the drama. All of that leads to great entertainment. Like Pedro, he will be missed once he is gone in Boston. Keep Manny for the rest of the year and let's see if we can't win a third ring with him, and then part ways in the off-season.

With Chia Pet DS as their mouthpiece they work up the people who loving the guys an hour earlier. Varitek is speaking out against him. You people that support Manny are in denial. Forget the stats. He's killing the team.

Notice all the guys the FO wanted out did worse elsewhere? If we had given them a hearty handshake and a pile of dough our team would suck now. Thanks Manny for your contributions to the team with your bat, and Sox folklore with your antics. You want to be let out of your contract per Boras - so be it. Goodbye. He wants $100M for 4 years? He has become the laughing stock of Baseball. Somewhere he thinks fans are laughing with him...The truth is that people see him as a bufoon and are laughing at him. The rest of Baseball is having a good laugh at our expense. The Evil Empire couldn't be happier. We have the "Idiot", they have the "Pig", Rodriguez.

Having the best right handed hitter of his generation smack in the middle of your lineup means you have to pitch around him, opponents game plan around him, and his presence makes other batters on the team better. Just how much better it looks like we will soon discover.

Let's see what Papi looks like, or Drew, or even Youk without Manny in the lineup.

    We'll see.

  1. Trade him! Get rid of him! No one twisted his arm to accept the current deal with the Sox (which certainly exceeds the minimum wage). During his tenure with Boston he has held the Sox hostage yearly with mystery ailments and demands to be traded. This season Manny is torn up by the humiliating prospect of getting a mere 20 million dollar extension. For literally millions of dollars, he chants the tired mantra of getting no respect, he begs out of the lineup and refuses to hustle when he's in the lineup. Someone might want to remind him--he signed a contract, he's obligated to give his all and as part of team he should not sabotage his team's efforts to ward off the Yankees. They might also want to remind him that there aren't a lot of teams who want to kick the door down to trade for him. I cannot understand why any other club would want to take on this immature jerk and poison their clubhouse. Good luck Theo trying to get rid of this deluded crybaby

Apparently most manny fans dont remember those rants over the past 7 years. I remember him tanking a whole month in 2006. One thing I did notice , he always is "hurt" after the all-star break and right before a Yankeee series. Wonder if anybody else noticed that.

No player should no try 100 percent out there when there are 35,000+ people paying $$$ to see a hard fought game. Thats not counting the thousands watching the game seeing this crap happen.

  1. Manny Ramirez, one of the greatest hitters ever to play baseball should be traded. He does not even consider how his actions affect others; he is very self-centered - it's all about him. He does not know how to express gratitude (he is being paid 20 million or so annually, after all). Young players coming up in the system do not need to be around someone who chooses when or when to not play, or when or when to not hustle. I would like to know, though, if interventions have been tried. Even his agent, Boras, can agree that with his salary, he should be giving 100% all of the time (not when he feels like it). When he is GONE, it will be very interesting to read and hear from the Sox players how he affected each of them. Rather than third parties writing about it, the fans deserve to know the truth.

  1. The RS will try and trade him now, and should, because they are unlikely to pick up his option at year's end. So the only way to get anything in return is to do it now. At this point, it's clear the Sox do not have the composition to compete into October with, or without, Manny....so nothing will be lost by trying to trade him now.

This isn't about his comedy act, or even him. It's about whether the Sox can retool for '08 and '09, and get something of value for him.

(Manny's an insecure, emotional [by which I mean not-quite-grown-up] performerwho can play baseball between stunts. and when this stunt is over, he'll go back to baseball.)

We win more games with Manny than we would without him. He lack of hustle, while annoying, doesn't cost games, it just offends our sensibilities.

Lots of my friends are Yankees fans, and they are PRAYING that the Sox get rid of Manny. Watch what happens to Papi when Manny isn't behind him protecting him in the lineup.

  1. There is a bottom line here for The Red Sox. It is clear to any rational human being that Manny does not respect the game at all. After all, does anyone with a young son playing baseball want them to see Manny behave on the field...not huslting, throwing staff members to the ground etc.... No, of course. However, he's got so much talent swinging a bat. Therein lies the dilemma for the Red Sox. The Red Sox, by not trading him, are basically saying as an organization that they have no integrity. Keeping Manny is simply at this point a full fleged endorsement of his poor behavior, lack of effort and goofball antics. So, should he stay, Red Sox Nation can hold their heads up high! Do any of you members of RSN think that this clown would be tolerated in Pin Stripes.....Be honest now.

  1. It was nice knowing you Manny.... at least my jersey was good for 8 years.

and honestly... I don't care who they trade but they better do something to figure out how to light a fire under this team's butt, because they look AWFUL!!!!

Best home team in the AL???? Well they've lost 5 of 6 at home and have looked pretty bad doing it too. The pitching has been sub par and once again, knowing clutching hitting. Tek is still a major hole in the line up and the lead off guys are not getting on. This is going to turn into 2006 redux unless they do something soon

  1. TRADE HIM NOW!!! The only "peace" Manny will ever get is when he spends all that money on some serious Psychotherapy sessions. The man is a walking paranoid with delusional thoughts. If he respected the game and played like the great Hall of Famer's of the past then everything would be different. He is the most self centered egotistical, spoiled out of touch human being in the world other than maybe George Bush.

  1. While you may not like the way they do it, you can't argue with NOG's history of knowing when to fold'em. Using Pedro and Nomar as examples, you can argue that the demonization they went through was over the top, but it's obvious that they were the right moves. There's a point when it's time to get off the pot, and as much as I like Manny as a hitter and curiosity, it's time to let it go. Good luck Manny, and thanks for the rings.

  1. Cut him loose and the entire team will eventually respond positively in the form of team unity and wins. It's no different that firing someone who works for you who also infuses negativity and drags the team down. Trade his a$$.

  1. The Red Sox are a lousy sinking ship right now. There is no way they can beat the Rays and Yankees to make the playoffs. Sox's brass needs to see the truth; cut their losses and get rid of Ramirez-now. Keeping him serves no purpose and his poor attitude could spread to other players.

    Dump Ramirez!!

  1. Once this deal is done, I'm sure there will be a sigh of relief from the clubhouse. We'll hear about how bad it was for the other players in a few years, when Manny is retired.

Posted by CMC July 31, 08 08:19 AM
  1. Why boycott Fenway? We are fans first and foremost of the Red Sox... Manny is only a player, when push comes to shove... and a player who has upstaged the team and selfishly disturbed its cohesivity on many occasions. As far as I'm concerned, Manny can be Manny on someone else's time.

  1. It is such a shame that it got to this. I must admit, I wasn't a huge baseball fan until a few years ago, one of the reasons was Manny..he made me smile. He was so animated when he played. He is now someone I don't want my kids to look up to. Spoiled brattyness is not a good trait.
Obviously Manny wants out - for whatever reason. He speaks ill of his team and management, he has manipulated games and unfortunately let his team mates down, let alone his fans - it's time to move on. HE IS A LIABILITY! He is intentionally messing up - that is NOT a star. The team, fans and Boston may suffer that loss but they will pull thru. They are a good team that has worked hard and to allow some petulant spoiled brat take that away from them is a travesty. I am sure teams like the Yankees are happy to see him go, that is what makes Manny...Manny. He loves to think the team will fall apart without him - well Manny, it won't . We have faith in the team and we support and stand by them - something you can't say.

  1. I hate to say this, but if the proposed trade doesn't work, acquire Bonds for the rest of the season and bench Manny.

I say this hoping that the Sox would not sign two people - A-Rod and Bonds. Things have change.

  1. Time for Manny to go. I have been one of the biggest Manny fans out there, but I can no longer tolerate this. Manny may say it's about respect, but it's obvious it's about one thing......$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ See ya!

  1. I guess two world series was enough for us. This is by far the most rediculous thing I've ever seen as a Sox fan. Manny helped take two Indians teams to the show and did the same for us, and now we're firing him out of town in a cannon cuz he takes his typical mid year vacation. I really don't know how you meatballs expect to replace one of the top hitters ever.

Where can I get my Marlins jersey?

  1. Funny how everyone is calling Manny self-centered. Wasn't he the one who was offering up part of his salary a few years ago to try to keep one of his teammates who was demanding more money??? (May have been Nomar, but my memory escapes me at the moment).

Sure he makes a crapload of money, but he's never been about the money. Sure we can all tell him to suck it up and deal, but why should he? if you were working at a company that treated you like crap, and you knew that there were other companies that would treat you better, you'd apply for other jobs, even though you loved the clients and colleagues you work with. We don't know what's been going on in the clubhouse. Manny hasn't just been being Manny lately, with his outbursts and scuffles. There must be more going on than we are aware. As much as we may love him, he needs to do what makes him happy, just like the rest of us. It's a job, albeit a strange, childlike, lucky bastard of a job, but at the end of the day, it's where you spend most of your time. You can love your job, but your boss can make life miserable and make you want to leave.

We're losing a great guy. I highly doubt that this is his doing. Nobody would act the way he's been acting if he was being treated well on the job. I believe him that it's the Red Sox and the media painting him to be the bad guy and you're all buying it...as usual.

I love his blog by you can never forget 2K4 and the bloody sock! UP NATION!!!!! Lets get up and get behind the Sox!!! Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. I couldn't agree with Manny any more. I don't like this new ownership either. Yes, they brought us a team that won two World Series and the first in 86 years, But I think Manny is absolutely right. I think he should add Johnny Damon and Theo Epstein to that list of Red Sox they treated poorly. If they don't want to re-sign a player, have the backbone to tell them straight up instead of offering half of what they're worth.

That leaves just Ortiz as the only every day non white player.

The old Boston trend continues. Look at all the young guys .

    Hmmmmm.

All white , all the time.

  1. Hey Manny.... no need to worry about the Sox trying to paint you as a bad guy, you're doing a great job of it yourself. If you learned to keep your mouth shut and play half as hard as guys like Tek, Petey and the rest of your teamates then you might get a little of the respect you think you deserve. When in reality, you don't deserve the Boston Red Sox or the teamates you've got. Take your sorry act out of Boston, we're tired of you. And who knows, if you wind up in Florida the next time you decide to "take the night off" because of sore knees (i.e. you're up against a good pitcher, and not hitting off a Triple A quality arm) maybe you can jump on the interstate and get a part time job at Disney... you'd fit in well there and maybe they'd respect you!!!

  1. They're printing up the T-shirts as we chat: "Theo trades Manny...and all he gets is Jason Bay??" (insert the name of any lesser talent)...It's a sloppy situation, surely, but the so-called "top echelon" have decided to cut their noses and will, as a result, spite the fans: think about this carefully---they could have gotten their lefty reliever; they could have gotten a big name catcher to take AB's from Varitek; they might have even gotten a one for one replacement for Manny, Texeira, and have plenty of roster manueverability, but they chose not to pull the trigger---now powered by the sins of pride and revenge, they make a hasty move. .....Manny's antics around this time of year are pretty predictable and this year, especially, he's been provoked by the Knights of the Keyboard (who, in Sox history, have managed to picked on each and every HOF'er or near HOF'er to have come down the pike, save Doerr, Luis and perhaps the Babe, just to sell fish wrapping--I'll predict right now that Jonathan and Big Papi will be the next to feel media wrath)...I suspect his agent is pulling some of the strings. He usually calms down after the deadline has passed and in this instance he'd knuckle down and have a production half for his free agency to be, especially if they are looking for NINE figure income...the Sox would continue to have their power duo and MIGHT have a shot at a title...without him, his production and the draft picks he'll bring at year's end, this season's about lost...quite different from 04 when they received a proven commodity replacement SS in Cabrera who did nothing but shine like a jewel when the spotlight was shone upon him...they can't help but blow up championship teams...say good-bye to the 2008 season...this trade stinks! Ranks right up there with some of the worst and will surely be etched in Boston history as one of the top five terrible deals in the franchise's history. Thank you Curly-Red-Headed-One, thank you Quiet One, thank you Goofy One and thank you Theo---If this inane deal goes thru, you ALL deserve raspberries for desert tonite!

Posted by Richard Walega July 31, 08 09:03 AM
  1. Maybe Manny is on to something. I have thought the Sox have mistreated franchise players in the past. Didn't Pedro say the same things about the Sox's front office? He did. The front office has to make these players look like cry babies, right before they trade them.

  1. Thats right trade this idiot who thinks he is bigger than the game, lets look at A_ROD who is a bigger star who busts it to first every play and dont slap team mates or push down little publicists, This guy is a joke.

  1. Manny is still a great hitter but he's no longer playing like one of the greatest righthanded hitters in baseball. Even if he was still playing like that, Manny is a DH. He is lazy and carless defensively and every once in a while he gets one of his wrist flop throws to land in the right place. His hustle is non existent. He's got the worst attitude on this team. The Sox can't convince me to turn against him. His antics this season have. Pushing down the travelling secretary, smacking Youk, the 3 pitch at bat in NY, the knee "injury".

Jason Bay has .282 average .375 OBP with 22 HR's IN PITTSBURGH

put him in the lineup here and I only expect his numbers to get better. he'll have to learn the wall, but he'll actually have decent defence on the road after playing in PNC

Posted by moose July 31, 08 09:08 AM
  1. The main reason you bitter Boston fans have had this turn-around over the last decade is not Pedro, not the racist ownership, nor the brash over-rated GM. It is Manuel Ramirez. Without him it would be 90+ years since the Sox last won the WS. What would Ortiz's numbers look like w/o Manny's protection, I wonder? Henry & Co. keep making billions and they cannot guarantee the Man 2 more years before the start of this season? Please, Henry already has enough $$ from his cotton farms, I don't buy the whole "smart budget" act. Just 20 sell-outs at Fenway this year already paid for Manny's entire salary. This is a joke. I do hope somehow, someway Manny finds a place in the lineup in the new Yankee Stadium next year. You idiots don't know what you're throwing away!

Posted by Alex July 31, 08 09:17 AM
  1. Manny's been a huge presence at Fenway for years and I can't thank him enough for helping the organization win two World Series titles. But it's time to cut the cord. There's no way the Red Sox are going to pick up his option after the season ends and the way things look the Sox probably won't even make the playoffs. And since Manny is notorious for leaving his team behind when they need him most, it's a setup for a Zidane-esque departure. The Red Sox should get something for him rather than just losing him to free agency.

KEEP APOLOGIZING FOR A WORTHLESS, NARCISISTIC, WHINEY, HEARTLESS AND GREEDY EXCUSE FOR A BASEBALL PLAYER. 1. The Sox don't deserve Ramirez? Judging by the lack of interest, the other major league teams feel equally unworthy. Send him and his act to Pawtucket as a message to the youngsters ... "this is how NOT to play the game". For me, I'll take 25 players like Pedroia, Youkilis, Veritek, Lester, Ellsbury, and Beckett and be happy, win or lose, because I will know that they have given it their all and that they respected themselves, their teammates, the fans, and the game.

  1. Personally, I won't be happy to see Manny go, whether it's now or at the end of the season. He's an amazing athlete WHEN he is in the mood to make the effort. It's sickening to see someone with his talent not give 100% when he's on the field. I'm a big Manny fan, but I understand why the team is fed up. What kind of professional athlete fakes misplaying a ball? That was like a Keystone Cops routine! It's obvious at times that he's not making an effort and as a fan, that 's very frustrating to watch. When I think of how much more he could contribute (like running hard to first), it's maddening. I love the guy and even some of his antics, but his behavior is out of control at this point and I don't see how anyone can change that except Manny. Scott Boras will make sure he doesn't change now because all he wants is the $$$$. I believe Manny will regret this later when he's in Miami or wherever. He's got it made in Boston and he can't see that. What a shame.

Growing up, I could believe how the fans treated Yaz, the Rice, Pedro, Nomar, how do your young survive in your city, since you appear to eat them.

Guess what, it is curse time again, remember the Babe, and I don't mean to say they are equals, but it backfired on Boston then, and this will back fire.

How long do you guys expect JD Drew to stay healthy ??

Good Luck Red Sox Nation, you'll need it.

  1. Bill Beck, the Marlins traveling secretary is apparently even older than Jack McCormick. Bill's been in baseball for almost 40 years. With this revelation, I'm sure Manny would approve a trade to the Marlins. It's important for him to be able to shove around old men when applicable...the trade is now on !!

  1. I'm gonna miss Manny. The Sox are gonna miss Manny. He's the best right handed hitter in the game -- even today. It's not all about numbers, it's about WHEN a hitter gets the big hit and against what pitching.
The Sox will NOT win without him, and they would NOT have won any Championships w/out him, that's for sure.
Major league baseball is big money and entertainment, people. You want purety, go to a Little League game. Manny SHOULD be one of the highest played players in the game because he IS great AND entertaining. I know he is a headache for Titto and that's where I wish Manny would change. He should try his best all the time, but I think the Sox should've negotiated w/ him for a carreer ending 4-year deal. You Sox fans (and fairweather Manny-haters) are gonna miss him when he's gone. How's 4th place sound?

Bitch slapping his teammates in the dugout, knocking 60 year old press secretaries to the ground, holding up signs in the dugout, literally sitting on the ball in the outfield. THE GUY DOES NOT WANT TO BE A BOSTON RED SOX ANYMORE. So, please stop talking about his numbers and stats. We all know he is one of the greatest hitters of our time but if he doesn't want to play for our team anymore then he isn't going to be of any use to anyone in Boston. Get him out now before he takes down the whole rest of the team. Has everyone forgotten that we are the defending World Champions? Theo was able to secure this championship team intact and now Manny is single handidly destroying the team chemistry. That's what is unforgivable to me. That we were cruising along looking great and then for selfish reasons he decided he needed to start acting like an idiot to make sure he wouls be traded.

  1. So Manny offerring part of his $20 million to keep a pal on his team makes him a good soldier? Manny, like 99% of all current ballplayers , is all about the money, the BIG money. Manny is not playing to make us fans all fuzzy and happy watching him. He could care less where his playing (when he doesn't have his imaginary illnesses and/or injuries that is) as long as he's treated fairly and with respect; i.e. the promise of tons of dough. And working in a company where one is treated poorly is not quite the same as being paid mega millions to play a game for six months and earn extra money through endorsements and the fame that comes with being a baseball superstar. Francona always covered for Manny's idiosyncracies and bad behavior even if he had to contort himself into a pretzel doing so, until this last incident. And then instead of appreciating how his idiotic ways have been largely ignored by the management through the years, he goes on the attack blabbing about how badly he's been treated. Could this be because his contract is up by any chance at the end of the year? I'm sorry but I don't feel bad for him. Not one bit.

An then the polar opposite would show up...This guy makes Carl Everett look like Mother Theresa...Manny if there is a chance you read this...You are dispicable....You know you are bring down your team...For your own betterment..THere should be laws in place to prevent scum like you. 1. Trade Manny to get prospects and reload for next year... and sign another, great bat to play left field - that's right, I mean Bonds. Does sound ridiculous, but perhaps not as ridiculous as keeping Manny around. I bet Bonds will hustle to 1st base. Yeah, he will be a distraction - but a bigger one than Manny? I was a Manny apologist for a long time but I am done, and doing this will help us reload for next year, save money, and still compete this season.

  1. There's no I in TEAM! Sox don't need Manny's bullsh$t anymore. Hoping that Bay has passion...he won NL Rookie of the Year in '04 and has been an All-Star twice. And just as Jerry Remy stated last night, take a look at Pedro, Nomar & Damon since they have left the Sox....where are they now? Certainly no where near the caliber that they were in Boston. Whether its been being plagued by injuries & less than stellar stats. Yes, Manny could bat....but he needed a match lit under his a$$ just to get to 1st base if he wasn't convinced he knocked it out of the park. His fielding sucked! He should have looked over his left shoulder and watched the passion, drive & committment Coco, Ellsbury & Drew have on each play.
SO LONG, YOU CAN HAVE HIM LA.....
