Manny's fine wildly overstated

Posted by Gordon Edes, Globe Staff July 18, 2008 03:46 PM

Manny Ramirez was disciplined by the Red Sox in the aftermath of his June 28 altercation in Houston with Red Sox traveling secretary Jack McCormick in an agreement struck among the club, the player and his agent, Scott Boras, and the players' union.

According to industry sources, Ramirez, in addition to apologizing to McCormick, paid a fine of between $10,000 to $15,000, with the money going to an agreed-upon charity. The fine is at the lower end of that range.Reports that Ramirez had been assessed a six-figure fine are not true, and Red Sox officials have not raised the issue that Ramirez's strikeout against Mariano Rivera in a pinch-hit appearance July 6 was in any way related to the discipline administered.

Also, while Ramirez expressed some frustration this week about his contract status, all parties involved have recognized that the Sox do not intend to address the issue of his 2009 and 2010 option years until after the season. The Sox hold $20 million options on Ramirez for each season.

Asked to comment about the reports of the fine, Red Sox chairman Tom Werner e-mailed this: "Having discussed this, our response is that this will continue to be an internal matter.''

  1. This is the exact opposite of the previous article?

Did someone call and yell about it?

  1. And no retraction from Lobel. Why am I not surprised....

  1. Nice Gord - you tell em!
I cannot believe why some people are instigating trouble - I wouldn't be surprised if Manny was misquoted. Not trying to defend Manny but just reading the nonsense that's being written these days is pathetic.

  1. Wow. Lobell over-inflated a story about Manny and caused instant panic? Big shocker. Even more shocking that it happened on EEI - the kings of half truths and exaggeration.

  1. I don't know how he could complain if it was six figures. He shoved someone twice as old as him and had no suspension or criminal charges filed against him like would happen in the "real" world. I am tired of Manny's antics this year and seeing as his numbers are decreasing year to year I am content with the Sox not picking up his option.

  1. Thank you for clearing this up. The way the media overblows and disrepsects everything about Manny in inexcusable!

  1. Seriously, I feel horrible for Lobel (but excellent job on the cleanup, Edes). An excellent broadcaster and sports journalist just made a huge, huge blunder and it made everyone involved look awful and spiteful. I think the papers need to maintain a standard of going with news that is backed by sources ... and just because Lobel says he has a source doesn't mean you guys need to pump out the story, unless the editor has checked with his source. This is really shameful. How can Lobel be so wrong? Will he apologize to Manny and the Sox? I hate what Manny did, but there's no reason to pull a hatchet job on the guy.

  1. Thank you, Gordon, for seemingly being the only one here who researches a story before writing about it.

The Globe should be embarrassed to have Steve Silva connected to them. Way to report hearsay as fact, Silva.

  1. Called it.

Good pickup, Edes. At least there's SOME journalistic integrity left amongst the Boston sports media.

Of course, this won't stop fairweather fans from jumping all over Ramirez, but hey, I suppose he's used to it by now.

  1. My beef with Manny is that he was bad mouthing to organization for "lying" to him. Telling him one thing and then doing another. Manny should be very appreciative of the Sox organization that has treated him like a King for nrealy a decade.

However, I guess it should surprise nobody that another sports reporter is trying to grab the headlines with a bunch of ludicrous and totally unsubstantiated accusations.

I used to have some respect for Bob Lobel but he now looks a little bit like he just morphed into John Tomase Jr.

The irresponsibility of the media today has reached epidemic proportions.

  1. With no evidence presented and that kind of mis-statement of the facts Lobel should by fired. That was classic yellow journalism and a criminal misstatement of what happened. At the very least with that kind of lack of integrity Lobel should be banned from Fenway.

  1. Why would the Sox pay 20 million dollars for a clown? If Ramirez had shown any respect for the game and for his teammates while his skills were undiminished the nation might understand Theo easing Many into retirement. But the self-absorbed slacker whose antics have probably traumatized a generation of Little League parents and coaches doesn't deserve a graceful exit. Dump the fool.

  1. The fine should have been six figures. His behavior was totally unacceptable. $10,000 is a slap on the wrist. I am disappointed the Red Sox did not fine him more heavily and suspend him a game. They sent a totally wrong message to young kids.

I do not think Ramirez will be here next year if Holliday or Texeira are available. Manny being Manny is wearing thin, as is his issues with his contract at the All-Star game. It's time to invest in a team player, not a selfish self-centered child.

  1. MANNY'S FINE WILDLY OVERSTATED -- So much for the intrepid "journalism" and 'highly placed sources" of Bob Lobel. Next time why not just report what some 12-year-old kid from Quincy has to say about Manny. It will be just as factual, less predictable, and more interesting.

Posted by Pawsoxpop July 18, 08 06:13 PM
  1. Hmm. I'm going to believe Lobel, since the Globe holds an ownership interest in the Sox.

  1. Thanks for re-opening the blogs.

Manny is owed an apology. To say any player at any time deliberately sabotaged his team is the worst accusation that can be made in sports. To claim such a thing when we all saw how slumping Manny was beaten by Rivera is doubly shameful.

Lobel needs to apologize as Manny did to Mr McCormick.

And the Globe imo needs to become less like a tabloid disseminating vicious unsubstantiated gossip and and more like the top quality paper it once was.

Allowing bloggers to vent hatred all day on Ramirez on a story that Lobel tried to pass off weeks ago on Comcast was spurious. The claim Manny intentionally blew that at bat made no sense whatsover and defied what we saw ourselves.

If the intention is to run our furure Hall of Famer out of town, fine.

Just admit that it is so, and be done with it.

  1. Bottom line . . . Manny is the best pure hitter to ever play the game and when he's gone all you naysayers/bashers will be cryin' your lil' eyes out!
The FO is known to say one thing and do another . .how many players have said the same thing as Manny? Lowe did, Pedro did, Damon did . .
    Manny for president!!
P.S. Lobel must have been drunk as usual when he made those absurd comments!

Sox fans are going to miss this guy horribly when he's gone.

And any coach or parent who's been "traumatized" by Manny Ramirez needs his head examined.

  1. Since it went to charity, hopefully it was $100k. A mere couple days pay anyway for Manny. $10k isn't a measure of discipline for him, and neither is "making" him give to charity. Punishments in MLB are absurd...and the Player's Union has to be present, along with Manny's agent, to hammer out the details of this token donation?

Manny should come out on his own and offer the $100k. That would be a nice PR boost.

  1. If I were certain that Manny Ramirez is actually a human being I would say that Manny is the most disgusting and hateful human being I have ever known of. However it is not really proven that this pile of filth is actually human.

All of the half wit yahoos in New England should ask themselves if they think it would be acceptable for their own children to grow up to be just like Manny. A useless thug like Mike Tyson who is allowed to beat up old men (and probably his wife, children, and multiple mistresses) without suffering the consequences because he makes lots of money and hits home runs.

  1. the amount of the fine doesnt matter, all that matters is that manny wants out of these two option years. anyone who says otherwise is just being naive. manny just picked up boras, there's no way boras gets involved unless it was agreed upon that manny would do his best to be a free agent at the end of this season or else boras doesnt get paid. it is not a coincidence that as soon as manny signed boras that he turned up the antics. there's manny being manny and then there is what he has been doing the past month. 2 years ago i would say keep him at all costs, he is irreplaceable. at this point the only reason you pick up his option is to spurn him and boras. he knows 2 years from now he wont be able to get a long term deal, this is his last shot. he is working the bad blood to a point that he will be a cancer on the clubhouse (keep in mind this is already a clubhouse that lacks the comradery it has had the past few years) if they keep him. manny is gone in a way that is half as surprising as nomar in '04. the media has a tendency to get all over boston super stars but in this example it is called for. it is just a shame that teixeira is a boras guy as well or else everything would be handled before august

Alot of people, including myself who at least had you pegged for having some integrity, are now ashamed to have ever backed your seemingly now ficticious and mythical assertions regarding Manny's fine and actions. Sorry Bob, you have totally lost your fastball and need to retire totally from the Boston sports scene!

  1. 6 digits including cents?

Posted by dtam July 19, 08 02:20 AM
  1. Tom, number 34, you really crack me up. 'Get arrested for popping Youk'. These are MEN playing a very physical game, living together 7 months of the year, and in professions like sports, construction, longshoring, fire fighting and policework, and of course the military, these men sometimes do push shove and 'pop' each other. However, no one files charges because they are MEN, and get over it. Fast

In your sanitized cubicles and de-masculinized orbits, somone bumping you with a shopping cart in the supermarket merits a law suit. But real MEN men haul off on each other occasionally, and GET OVER IT.

Manny most certainly should have been fined for touching Mr McCormick, whose age and position on the club need to be respected. Mike Lowell said Manny was deeply shamed by his loss of control, but the Youk thing is nothing. Grow a pair, and keep in mind a shove or pop between MEN in the workplace due to normal tensions does not mean 'assaultt', any more than an onfield brawl does. Don't try to equate their behavior with the castrated office environment.,

Mr McCormick as ex-Boston police officer, (ie a MAN) probably understands that.
Which is why he was able to let it go while you are still screaming for an arrest.

  1. Just the same old same old from the Boston media. Never been a good place for players to play, all the more reason it was a good idea to lock up Terry Francona. Terry has been great shielding his players from the brutal Boston media.
As for Manny, it has never been about guys being a clown, or a cancer....it's about whether or not you can deliver, and it appears Manny still can....If the numbers continue, it is a no brainer 20 million is a bargain for Manny. However, this time the balls in managements court

  1. Im tired of Manny being Manny. Do I think he went down on purpose? Who knows.. He has done some crap like that in the past, like when he takes him self out for injuries when it seems like the sox are out of contention. He fought with Youk., and bullied, assluted an old man in management... Ya, I guess he is capible of not trying, Look we are seeing the real Manny and Shame on the Sox Management for the small action taked when he assulted that man. I guess the free pass Manny gets lets stuff like that happen, then you get Manny being Manny.

  1. This is totally out of hand. No one knows all the goes on between an organization and its players. These are adults. The FO is also full of intelligent and very successful business people. I think they know how to handle any situation that comes up with any of their players. Why are some of you so angry ? To say Manny committed assault and should have been arrested seems ludicrous to me. Should every member of the Rays and Red Sox been arrested for the brawl that took place on the field at Fenway? This wasn't just someone shoving someone. There were some fists flying. These are grown men, involved in a contact sport. Craps going to happen. I don't think Manny should have shoved McCormick but we're not talking about some little old man with a cane. We are talking about an ex policemen. I am sure that he is more than capable of defending himself. You people are ridiculous!

  1. "and Red Sox officials have not raised the issue that Ramirez's strikeout against Mariano Rivera in a pinch-hit appearance July 6 was in any way related to the discipline administered."

I hate to break it to you people, but the fact that the Sox have not raised the issue is far from proof that Lobel's assertion is false. Lobel says that they have internal concerns. The Sox say that this will continue to be an internal matter. The fact that they haven't gone public with their feelings about Manny does not mean that they're not upset/disgusted with his behavior.

Fact is, Manny may be the best righty hitter of his generation, but he's a clown, a baby outside of the batter's box (when he wants to hit) and at this point, his future numbers probably will not be any better than a possible replacement.

I'm a Yankee fan so I don't care what you do with him as long as he doesn't land in the Bronx, but for the life of me I don't know how a guy like Mr. Francona, who has proven himself a classy, stand-up guy at every turn, can stomach Manny's crap. To me, it's just more proof that Francona's a much better manager--baseball and otherwise--than I ever thought he'd be.
