No Uribe

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff July 24, 2008 08:23 PM

While the Red Sox examined whether to pursue White Sox shortstop Juan Uribe, major league sources indicate the team backed away from a possible deal to acquire him.

The Red Sox really like the job done by Jed Lowrie and feel that Alex Cora can be an adequate backup to Lowrie until Julio Lugo returns to the scene sometime in mid-August. That's not to say the Sox won't consider another veteran shortstop if the fit and price is right.

The Sox are still pursuing relievers. They had explored a possible deal with Washington for Jon Rauch but major league sources indicated that the asking price of Lowrie and Michael Bowden was too high. Rauch was dealt to Arizona.

Nick, use spell check next time.....seen is actually spelled scene in this case. And you're a sports WRITER?

  1. The deal makes no sense at all. Alex is a clubhouse favorite of Baldy Francona. I could see if we got a relever for Cora (like anyone would actually trade a decent reliever for Cora). What would the sox gain by swapping backup shortstops? Cora plays second and first (rarely) at times. Is Cora's health or age an issue or his lack of offensive production? How would Uribe improve the situation. A waste of talk is all this is.

  1. Uribe would be a great defensive addition if Lowrie doesn't produce. I like Cora, but he doesn't seem to have the same spark that he generated last year... which he may have again moving to Chicago with his brother. Still remember Uribe's plays at the end of the 2005 WS... wouldn't mind a little more of that, and a lot less Lugo.

  1. Nitpicking, I know, but you can say "...Julio Lugo returns to the SCENE..." or "...Julio Lugo returns to BE seen...", but you cannot, as you wrote, say "...Julio Lugo returns to the seen...", unless, of course, you were intimating that he has been invisible. Sorry.

  1. How can Washington ask for BOTH Lowrie and Bowden for Rauch and then go and trade him to Arizona for Bonifacio?... I think Jim Bowden is a complete and utter moron. I never understood the interest in Uribe... why spend more money?

  1. G o with the kid and forget Lugo! The kid can do no worse and he may bloom this year. Seriously, Lugo is basically an automatic out and a defensive liability (Theo's statistical spreadsheet on Lugo a couple years ago had faulty formulas :-)

Get Lugo healthy and trade him for whatever you can get.

  1. Settle down there GOPats and Jason. He's pounding out a blog update, not writing a novel. I'm pretty confident Nick knows the difference between seen and scene. Just wants to get you information fast, as you demand, typed the wrong word and posted his entry.
And GOPats, spellcheck wouldn't catch an error like that anyway. The word is spelled correctly, just used in the wrong context.
But then again, what do I no?

And I completely agree with Mike - the Nats must be smoking crack, just like the Rockies, who asked for Buchholz in exchange for friggin' Fuentes. What a joke.

  1. 1. Spell check does not cover grammatical errors. In addition this is a blog and not traditional newsprint, so I am not sure that a copy editor is being used.

    2. The Uribe rumor was puzzling from the start. One thing to remember is that when information like this becomes public there may be a reason why it is shared. That is, perhaps the Sox front office is persuing something completely off the radar. How many times have there been deals made that were not previously reported a rumor?

  1. Why in the world would the Red Sox want an underachieving bum like Uribe? If it's possible to "downgrade" from Julio Lugo, Uribe is one of the few instances where that can be done.
