PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Ortiz hit a towering fly ball in his first at-bat ... to the third baseman.

Toledo had the patented defensive shift on Ortiz but third baseman Kody Kirkland, playing where the shortstop is usually positioned, had plenty of time to make the play.

1st pitch: Ball, low (91 miles per hour)

2nd pitch: Strike, looking (92 MPH)

3rd pitch: Popped to third

McCoy Stadium is almost filled to capacity now. The score is 0-0 after one inning.
