Paps bails out Lester; Sox ahead 4-0

Posted by Gordon Edes, Globe Staff July 22, 2008 12:55 AM

Jed Lowrie's two-run single gave the Sox a 4-0 lead in the top of the eighth, and Jonathan Papelbon came to the rescue in the bottom of the inning, when the Mariners loaded the bases on three singles against Jon Lester. The last was a sharp comebacker by Willie Bloomquist that struck Lester near his right ankle--you probably saw better replays on NESN than we did here. Lester wound up on the mound in a sitting position, but walked off on his own power. Sox manager Terry Francona brought in Papelbon--his first appearance since last Tuesday's All-Star boofest--and he induced Raul Ibanez to hit into an inning-ending double play.
