Paps survives, Sox capitalize

Posted by Gordon Edes, Globe Staff July 23, 2008 08:28 PM

Jonathan Papelbon escaped a jam of his own making--he stumbled while trying to field Jose Vidro's leadoff tapper in the 11th--by inducing Kenji Johjima to hit into an inning-ending double play with Seattle runners on first and third.

The Sox then capitalized on an error by Willie Bloomquist, who dropped Kevin Youkilis's liner to center to score three times in the 12th to take a 6-3 lead.

Jacoby Ellsbury singled to start the rally and moved to second on Dustin Pedroia's ground out. JD Drew was walked intentionally, and Bloomquist dropped Youks' liner to load the bases. Mike Lowell followed with a two-run single and Sean Casey singled home another run.

Craig Hansen is in to close out the M's.
