Red Sox still trying to make it work
Less than 2 hours before the trading deadline, the Red Sox were still trying to make this 3-way deal with the Pirates and Marlins work, but as one source said, "They're not going to be stupid about it." At the moment, the deal would require the Red Sox to include prospects as well as Manny Ramirez and the $7 million remaining on his 2008 salary, a price the Sox appear unwilling to pay at this time.
Another industry source said within the last 10 minutes that he thinks talks will go down to the 4 p.m. deadline.
That's all for now ...

If the sox dont make this deal, then they better be ready to hold a press conference today saying that they picked up Mannys option and everyone kiss and makeup. They cant just keep him and not do anything. That would be suicide for 2008. I cant believe that the FO would just keep the status quo. Trade him today or pick up his option today. Then only two choices that make sense.
The Red Sox management better make this trade work --- or else Manny will sit for the rest of the season when big games need to be won --- he'll show the Red Sox management (and fans) how much they don't deserve him.
As for me, I'd hate to see Manny go --- he's too much of an inspiration for us Yankees' fans to continue hating the Red Sox Nation.
Steve, the problem with your scenario is that management tried doing that five years ago and it backfired. Pedro kept requesting the club pick up the option on his deal and when they did he complained. That was the beginning of the end for his time in Boston.
Manny could well do the same thing because ultimately what he and Boras both want is for the Sox to announce they aren't picking up the option so he will become a free agent at season's end and get the multiyear deal he and his satanical agent desire. He was wrong about it not being about money because I believe the 'peace' he desires comes with a price tag.
Manny does not want the Sox to pick up the option at this point. Scott Boras has him convinced he can get a four-year/$100 million contract on the open market. Manny is all about the money!!! He'll discover just like A-Rod, no team willing to pay $100 million for four years at this stage in his career. Goodbye and good riddance to Manny!
He didnt want the FO to pick up his option. He wanted a multi year deal. As for the yankee fan. Maybe you'll be seeing him in pinstripes next year. you never know.
