Rice sounds off on Manny

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff July 29, 2008 07:27 PM

Here are a few comments from former Red Sox great and NESN host Jim Rice on Manny Ramirez. The remarks were made to former Sox manager Kevin Kennedy and Rob Dibble on XM Satellite Radio’s “The Show” earlier today:

“Manny Ramirez is really not a part of the team, he’s in the back, in the trainer’s room, not really taking a leadership role. If he was a leader, he would be with the rest of his team and honestly, over the last couple of years, he hasn’t been a leader and that’s not very good. Now, I don’t know if this is true, but Manny Ramirez may be making a big deal over some things so he can become a free agent. You heard his comments, if he becomes a free agent, he may be able to make some more money and maybe he’s trying to [tick] off someone with the Red Sox so, at the end of the year, he can maybe get some more money and some more years if he becomes a free agent.”

  1. Yeah...if there's anybody qualified to comment about team harmony, it's Jim Rice, the original clubhouse contaminant.

The next insightful thing he says...whether on NESN or anywhere else...will be the first.

  1. Jim Ed is right. While Jim Rice was a player, there was a few squabbles, but he had his head in the game on the field FIRST. Manny while I have heard Jerry Remy say his work ethic off the field was really good, his on field antics overshadows the work ethic. After all, it isn't about Manny. The legacy of Tim Wakefield to this team has been real, Big Papi and his hitting, Curt and the bloody sock (albeit with some noise over the years), and the leadership of Veritek (albeit with a lousy batting average), there are MANY other leaders on this team. Manny hasn't been one of them. A trade for anyone would be a help to this team, and without which will be disruptive, and yield no chances for a championship this year!

  1. you have to admit that red sox is not cool with manny.. they acted cheap and not willing to pick up the option of his contract as two more years left with 20 mil thats pretty cheap with his rbi and batting.. Manny do a lot thing for Red Sox. He led his example as good hitter... do not have to take leadership talk and blah.. he do not have to.. he can do let his bat do the talking.

  1. I'm telling ya...it's time for Theo to order a code red on Manny's butt.

  1. Just like Jim Rice to nail it!!! He is absolutely right!!! JR keep telling it like it is....

  1. ab so freaking lutely

100% agree with Rice & that theory.

  1. It's too bad Jim Ed didn't sustain his hate/ hate relationship with the media after retiring.

  1. I have been a faithful Sox fan for about 30 years, and I can say that Jim Rice was never half the player that Manny was and is. Jim Rice was a choker who came up limp every time we needed him late in the season or in the post season. Manny is a World Series MVP and a two time World Champion, As a Sox fan, I will never forget Manny's wonderful and critical clutch contributions to our team. Unfortunately, I will also always recall Rice's continuous failures and lack of heart in critical situations.

  1. I hold Jim Rice in very high regard.
    So should Manny.

Seasonally it seems, Manny is letting greed, his own sense of cutthroat business, an agent, ARod get into his head.

  1. And I hope he does....The Red Sox do not deserve to have him on the team any more.

  1. I am so sick and tired about people running their mouth about Manny, when they are doing the same. Jim Rice, what are you talking about? How many Rings do you have? Yeah, NONE!! Manny is a winner and eventhough I do not agree with some of his action, please, STOP talking about it so much!! Lets talk about how bad Clay Buchholds or however you write his last name is pitching. He Sucks!!! Write that!!

  1. Jim Rice was one of the most self centered players of his generation. I don't remember him ever taking a leadership rose, unless he was going to directly benefit

  1. Jim Rice is an idiot. I don't care how "great" he is supposed to be. He has no idea what is going on between Manny and the Red Sox. I will from here forward only be reading the Boston Herald. At least they ran an article that tried to tell this story from Manny's point of view. There are usually two sides to every story. I am not sure I even want to be a Red Sox fan anymore. I am completely disgusted with the way this entire situation has been handled. The media are vultures, the Red Sox FO couldn't care less about their veteran players, and the fans are fickle. I think I'd rather be a Yankees fan. I am totallyh disillusioned with everything Red Sox.

  1. Mr. Rice seems to be right on. I would like to have someone answer a question for me. Have the Sox given up on 08 at all levels? They keep pitching Buckholtz, he never wins, They keep playing Ellsberry, he keeps getting worse. They keep pitching Hansen, he never seems to improve. Are they making any effort to get a centerfielder? Roland or Kotsay? Tonight was the low point of the season. Thank You, Ted

  1. After watching Manny jog down the first base line again tonight, I don't know why they would not trade him for a bag of balls. He is a special talent, no question, but I have to think that there must be nobody left in his corner in the Red Sox organization.

Posted by Greg Brown July 29, 08 10:43 PM
  1. I couldn't agree more. There must be a method to the Manny madness. He couldn't possibly be as big a screwball as he appears. He's been loafing pretty much all year, but the altercations with Youkilis and staff and the three-called-strike strikeout a few weeks ago pretty much summed up Manny for me, and I think for some of his teammates.

Sure he's a great player, but as a teammate he never rises about the tolerable level and those periods are fairly short.

I don't know how much Ortiz relies on their relationship as opposed to his bat in the lineup, but I say since this is looking like an off-year for the Red Sox anyway (unless some of the younger players get straightened out) let's get rid of him asap.

  1. In some ways, you can't blame Manny since the Red Sox have tried to continually seem to deal him the last several off seasons. But, he has to be a team player for the time being and quit being a baby about his current situation. Manny, shut up and play!!!

Posted by Mike July 29, 08 11:06 PM
  1. The Sox, Manny, and whatever team is willing to deal are all in a pickle over this, but I feel Rice is correct. The team wants Manny to live up to his contract, Manny wants more money, and a dealing team may/will have to pick up the option years if there is a deal, if not extend it. Who gets the best of the deal if any is made? If the team starts winning it could be addition by subtraction, if Manny gets his deal he'll continue to be rich, and if a team deals, they'll be getting a potential problem down the road albeit with some HOF credentials and production.
I've got no problem with Rice's comments. He seems to have hit a nail right on the head.

Posted by Kris July 29, 08 11:14 PM
  1. Tell it like it is Jim ED. I could not agree more. Manny is all for Manny, always has been and always will be. Seems like $160 million has not been enough. Obviously he has not spent it on English lessons. This is a guy who came to New York at age 10 and we can still barely understand him. He has made about the same amount of effort to fit in with his teams as he has to fit in with this culture.

A tremendous amount of credit is due to the Sox players who have kept their mouths shut about this clown. Those who bust hump every day are certainly seething at this bum. Nice to hear all of the 'boos' tonight when Manny does his usual and not run out a grounder, even in a potential no hitter. Dump him for a bag of bats! Even cracked ones!

  1. Red Sox know this is true... but abusive relationships are what Bostonian's thrive upon... So Manny can "just be Manny" and this can continue. Yanks and Angels in ALCS.

  1. RIGHT NOW THE WHOLE RED SOX TEAM IS IN A SLUMP!!!!.THERE IS DISSENTION AMONG THE PLAYERS,DUE TO THE FACT MANNY IS BEING LAZY AND PLAYS WHEN HE WANTS TO.HOW CAN A TEAM FUNCTION WHEN YOU HAVE A GUY LIKE MANNY MAKING TONS OF MONEY AND NOT PUTTING ANY EFFORT IN WHEN HE'S OUT THERE.HE IS A CLOWN IN THE FIELD AND SHOULDN'T BE PART OF A GOOD BALL TEAM.
SO PLEASE THEO LET HIM GO AND LETS STARTING WINNING LIKE WE DID.
I HAVE BEEN A RED SOX FAN FOR 65 YEARS,

  1. Manny is an idiot!! Great hitter, but still an idiot. Pick up his option for next year then trade him. At least get something for the retard!!

Posted by Rick July 30, 08 06:34 AM
  1. Funny that Rice would say this. He wasn't exactly Mr. Red Sox when he was here. Why? Because the media treated him the same way they treat Manny--poorly.

Posted by ron July 30, 08 07:49 AM
  1. Would be nice to have a young Jim Ed playing in left field instead of a guy that obviously does not care! Heck would even take an old Jim Ed!

  1. Who is Jim Rice?

I know who James Posey is. He's the one you let get away, The one that will put the Hornets into the championship and the Celtics into the under 50 group. But, who is this guy Jim Rice? (-:

Send Manny to the Dodgers and enjoy 4th place behind the Yankees, the Rays, the Orioles.

Send Theo to the Spurs. The need some losing years.

  1. Consider the source- Has Manny ever tried to beat up the manager becasue he couldn't bunt?

Posted by APC July 30, 08 08:39 AM
  1. Exactly what I said two days ago!.He met with Boras in Seattle and it was decided that if his option was not picked up, he could be a free agent....Free to negoitate another 3 or 4 year deal w/ A-Rod money. So kick up a fus with the Sox and get final word on extension or traded without extensions included.

Posted by Gary Johnston July 30, 08 09:04 AM
  1. Jim Rice was a leader and played the game right. Most of you posters probably were in diapers when he played!!!

And he is right about Manny. Or should I say SCOTT BORAS. He is the problem. He is telling Manny, he will get another $100 million. No Way. He will lose both options from the Sox and he will lose money on the open maket.

And I have enjoyed watching Manny over the past 8 years, but for me, this is ruining the 08 season, so all I can say... Theo... Take any trade....ANY>>>

ummmm Manny is the one that kept asking to be traded - so what you are saying is that Manny is now upset because he asked to be traded, several times, and the tema tried to honor that request? Well I guess it is not that far fetched.

  1. I love JER just like any other Sox fan does, but lets be real for a minute... JER played during the Sox era when there was NO team chemistry, when it was 25 players and 25 cabs... remember? In other words, zip your lid!

  1. Enough is enough. Let the MannyChild go. Heck, he won't even realize he's not in Beantown for a few months. Manny ought to be thankful that he can hit a baseball, that's all I can say. What else would he be doing?

    Posted by ventana76 July 30, 08 02:19 PM
  1. Manny is a great player(when he wants to be) I don't see the sox makeing a trade for anyone out for Manny. They have him for 2 more years so keep him. Jim ED was a great batter, he couldn't play the field at all. He also, hit into way too many double plays. However, I still think he sould be in the HALL. As for the leadership part he didn't need to be remember YAZ!!!

    Posted by bgj1966 July 30, 08 03:17 PM
  1. Manny has been great for the sox, but now his greed is starting to affect the team and that isn't good. If he is going to slack on the field and not give his best efforts than why should the sox pay his lazy ass. You work hard and produce or you get fired in any other job, why can't this be the same. I would light his arrogant ass up and if he had a problem with that sit him down on the bench. No one likes a 20 million dollar a year cry baby.

  1. Why does he say this stuff to Dibble and Kennedy and not say it on NESN where he been on the air all week??? Is afraid to say it on the Sox owned channel?

Posted by Rick July 30, 08 06:07 PM
  1. If Manny or anyone else for that manner does not hustle, then trade him, release him or bench him. There is no room in this world for people that do not appreciate the natural skills they inherited. Fans should not have to pay high prices for tickets to see anyone not put fourth their greatest effort. Get rid of Manny! Then we could concentrate on playing the greatest game ever invented.

  1. Manny is right. The Red Sox don't deserve a player like him. They don't deserve someone who has a me-me-me attitude. Theydon't deserve a player that has a weakening bat and hasturned into a subpar fielder.

Posted by Kelly July 30, 08 08:44 PM
  1. I was a Jim Rice fan, and am a Manny fan. That being said, I agree with Rice on this one. Take Manny's 500th home run for example. Youk was in the on deck circle after Manny hit that home run (maybe a bad example because we know how their relationship is but...), He barely acknowledged his existance when Youk was trying to congratulate him, he was more caught up in getting to his two buddies to jump up and down with him. A team player would want to celebrate his accomplishment with the whole team, not just the select few that he actually likes. Manny acts like he was the cool kid in high school that could get away with anything he wanted because of his pure talent, but in the majors you have to be a pure teammate too. He just isn't.

Posted by Andrew July 30, 08 09:38 PM
  1. Manny is a quitter. I love watching him hit but his timing to miss games always seems to be at a critical time. He did it in 06 late in the season against Tampa, and pulled this stunt another time claiming to have had a sore throat but was out hanging around late with his pals on the Yankees.
The sox should have performed the MRI on his heart instead of his knees. Then Manny would have had a legitimate excuse for not playing against the Yankees ,because he has no heart.

Posted by Richard July 31, 08 12:49 AM
  1. If Manny is not traded before the deadline I think he will be traded before next season. Manny wants out of Boston and it shows. If anybody remembers the Manny from last season when he ran the bases so quickly that his helmet kept falling off. I havent seen that type of dedication from Manny this season. Also his fielding this season has not been nearly good as it was last season. Granted Manny has never really been a great fielder but even i can see the difference this year from previous years. He just does not have the same drive to want to play well for the Red Sox anymore. Manny is still one of the best hitters of all-time...but he still has alot to learn about the word teammate.

  1. While I agree that Manny is not the prototypical team guy, he is very productive. I think that Manny made David Ortiz "Big Papi" and without Manny, J
D Drew would still be mediocre at best. Unless the Sox can get a big stick to replace Manny, i don't think his leaving will help the team win now.
