Shaughnessy: Sox fed up
The Red Sox have had it with Manny Ramirez, Dan Shaughnessy writes in the pages of today's Boston Globe. Ramirez sat out last night's game against the Yankees after telling Sox management he had a sore knee. The admission by Ramirez came after manager Terry Francona had already penciled the slugger's name into the lineup. The Sox were forced to juggle the lineup, and despite the return of David Ortiz, lost the game, 1-0.
"This time, the Sox plan to do something about this situation," Shaughnessy writes. "Soon."
This time, of course, is a reference to Ramirez's history with the team, which includes quite a few controversial moments. Ramirez had an MRI on his knee yesterday, which came up clean. It's hard for anyone but Ramirez to know how his knee truly feels. However, it seems like the Red Sox are already fed up, according to Shaughnessy,
"Something's got to give," he writes. "The owners are mad. The manager is frustrated. The GM is frustrated. Teammates are angry."
What do you think? Is this the tipping point for Ramirez with the Sox? Leave your comment.

If he is in the lineup today, and he dosent get booed out of fenway, theres something wrong with the fans. Either A) we as fans have gotten soft, or B) way too many pink hats.
Manny knows he has a better shot signing a big contract after this year than two years later. Many teams can pay for his services.
Yankees have Abreu's $16mil and Giambi's $24mil rolling off and heading to a new stadium. Look for ARod and Manny tandem in the Bronx.
Good luck Dead Sox Nation in finding a replacement.
I have a rare form of arthritis and for a number of years had severe pain in my right shoulder. According to my X-Rays the joint was fine and the doctor assured it wasn’t the arthritis. I also had several MRIs done, but all were clean. Doctors never did explain the pain, but it was very bad.
After reading all the “Last Straw” articles today, I really hope all this uproar isn’t just because of a clean MRI. That would be, very ridiculous.
Everybody calm down, for crying out loud. Just because the guy has a sore knee doesn't mean that he is trying to sabotage the season. And why should we believe the team's claims about the "clean" MRI more than Manny's claims about an injury -- they have more to gain by forcing him to play hurt than he does by claiming injury.
trade him to the dodgers they need a bat like his . the return is probably going to be bad contract coming back andruw jones or juan pierre and hopefully some usefull parts.
So last night was the biggest game of the year? Way to overstate things.
Instead of all you media people chiming in with your opinions and stiring everything up. Just give Manny the benefit of the doubt for now. Let's see how it plays out. I couldn't give a fidler's fart about about what Shaughnessy thinks. He's proven to be a hater and a poop stirer.
Does anyone seriously read or listen to Shaughnesy any more? What he says might be true, but if it is I'm not giving it any credence just because it's what he's reported. CHB is the most sensationalistic hack on the Globe staff, and no one should even listen to him.
if the red sox decide to trade ramirez, they could potentially get a good bounty for him. trade him to an nl team, (the mets, who are rumored to be actively pursuing a corner outfielder) get prospects for him, (john neise, ed kunz) and some b level prospects) then combine some of the prospects in the trade and some from the sox farm (bowden, bard, chris carter) and spin them for holliday and fuentes. or even texiera and move youk to left
Pathetic really.
how many world series for yanks vs red sox since manny in boston?
It's about time Ownership and the F.O. puts an end to the Manny saga in Boston. Over the last month he has insulted and humilated his bosses, his manager, his teammates and Red Sox Nation. Just trade him NOW!!!. Whatever we get in return would be a benefit.
get rid of the guy. he's lazy, doesn't hustle, plays when he wants, and has proven he has no respect for teammates and staff.
It's time. Manny has few supporters left.
get rid of the guy. he's lazy, doesn't hustle, plays when he wants, and has proven he has no respect for teammates and staff. Best to get rid of one than contaminate the rest of the team with frustration
Make a trade.........now! See who the Rockies would require or want to get Matt Holiday, and give them some prospects. It's almost certain they would want some some young talent (Bowden, Lowrie, Moss etc.). But it's worth it don't you think? Holiday is signed until 2009, and the Red Sox can work on signing him. Just bench Manny for the rest of the year and delagate him to pinch-hitting! His attitude is deplorable!
How do you get value for a guy who was better four years ago, placed on WAIVERS and no one took him?
Manny's trade value will not be good, but he needs to leave if the players are against him (privately, of course). Anyone who challenges Shaunnesey for his knowledge, honesty or his intuition has not paid attention to his career as a Globe sportswriter. He gets the stories right; no "Heraldesque" false reporting here!
The Red Sox and Manny Ramirez have had an unhealthy co-dependent relationship since Day 1. But the Sox have put up with his eccentricities and he has delivered on the field, playing a significant role in two World Series championships. I just wish he would cut his hair. At the very least it would take some weight off of his sore knee.........
For anyone who has played team sports there is always a couple of temperamental teammates that you are willing to tolerate due to their over all value to the team. I think Manny has hit the tipping point with has latest round of antics. No one is bigger than the team. Adios~ 24!
Okay so just because manny wants a few days off doesn't mean everyone has to go all crazy on him. His knee could really be hurting, he could be faking, but does it matter? He's one of the greatest hitters in Baseball. Deal with it
last night was the biggest game of the year....so far. if you dont realize that you arent paying attention. The yanks have been climbing in the standing through all the injuries. They just made a trade filling 2 of the 3 holes they had and theyre still working on washburn, who will help theyre rotation, if they get him. And Tampa is still ahead by 3 games. If Ramirez hangs it up now and the Sox dont make a move then Papi comming back means nothing.
the red sox are a good team anyway but theyre run to the playoffs will be alot tougher without that bat in the lineup. Lets not forget that Mannys hot streaks are a big part of the reason the sox have been able to keep up with the division race in the absence of ortiz. I am not a red sox fan but i can imagine that this situation would anger me if i were. Manny's supposed to be someone this team can count on.
I think the Sox should sit down with Manny and square-away whatever is going on with him. He can be a large force in the Sox' success. I am a proponent of keeping Manny; however, if he is not going to play everytime he thinks he has been dissed, then let him go or trade him.
As for Dan Shaughnegativity, has he ever said anything positive about the Sox? How has he kept a job when he does not seem to report what is happening, just his opinions? He is the kind of reporter that Ted Williams always had problems with. I think that overall the Boston Press is much better now, with the exception of ol' Danno Shaughnegativity.
Sox fans, don't be suckered by CHB. He ragged on Pedro for years, calling him the "Dominican diva", and now is after Manny. He's just trying to sell papers and books, now taht there's no curse to write about.
The Sox future without Manny may be very grim--does the FO (and fans) want to see him in pinstripes?
Shelley
It's called strategy. He's in his contract year, something is going on that we don't know about, and his agent is a mastermind when it comes to bending and breaking owners. Relax, he'll be stellar tonight, and we'll forget all about the drunken master of obnoxiousness, Dan Shaughnessy's ridiculous forecast.
It is time for Manny to move on, he is getting bad advice from a agent who won't get paid unless he gets out of his options and gets a new extension or a new deal as a free agent!! I think Manny has finally worn out his welcome in Boston!
I am burning my 2 kids manny t-shirts today!
also the sox paid for these options after 7 years of guarrantees, the sox now hold the cards!
au revoir manny!
Go Sox
I believe Manny is less than a year away from being totally washed up. It may be the multitude of aches and pains, which are probably real, or his reaction time (which accounts for the hundred or so fast balls he's waved at --- or watched slide by---this year).
Either way, he's frustrated; however, probably not as frustrated as the Sox front office will be if/when they try and get something for him. The Yankees may be dumn enough to take him on, but even that's questionable. Fellow fans, hope there is a solid right hand hitter around somewhere who can alternate with Moss in left field. Because, DS's motives may be ulterior, but he's right when he says Manny is done in Boston.
No team will trade for Manny when they know they have to give him a new contract as well. Keeping him with the same contract would just perpetuate the same behavior with $20mil+ on the payroll. Thats the root cause of all this.
The only way out is give Manny a new contract or just walk at the end of the season.
Any other team interested in Manny right now would not give up much right now just for essentially the right to negotiate a new massive contract.
Manny has worn out his welcome, hes quit on the team again and is likely looking to get the Sox to not renew him so he can get a bigger, longer deal as a free agent. Dump him if at all possible, I for one, want him gone.
If Manny goes this season without getting back a great player, the Red Sox will not make it to the playoffs.
Think through the trade Manny emotional reaction.
On a night that so many fans looked forward to, having Papi in the lineup again, Manny showed again what a prima donna he is in not willing to share the limelight. I have always given him the benefit of the doubt, and willing to forgive his quirky behavior every year when spring training arrives. This is different. He is behaving worse than a toddler AND getting $20 million a year. Trade him and let the clubhouse become unified again.
Enough is enough!
Speedy
Its over....lets move on. I gave up on manny in 2006 when he bailed out on the team...he sucks in the field and we don't need him anymore. I honestly believe this team has a better chance without him...don't forget how fresh the air felt after nomar left.
After several years of Manny's juvenile and self centered actions, I offer a two word comment: Good riddance!!
boo him!!!!!!!
If all of his teammates are enraged how come the public never hears their opinions? If Manny has really been pulling crap like this do you really think these players would stay silent all these years? Let me tell you what Manny being Manny means to me. It means that no matter what the media has to say about his antics he's going to keep doing what he's doing, put up great offensive numbers year after year which, has lead to him being arguably the most consistent hitter in baseball. Jerry Curl can write whatever he wants, who gives a crap.
Obviously Manny doesn't want the Sox to pick up the 1 year option at $20 million, but instead wants what everybody else wants - the 4 year deal. This is his way of trying to force the Sox into letting him go. Come this Fall, Manny for 1 year at $20 million will be the best deal (by far) on the market.
Give Manny a break. Assume his knee is sore. An MRI does not show pain--and I still think Red Sox Nation should show the man respect. Maybe I am naive--but I can't believe Manny is that mean-spirited to let down his teammates.
Who knows? Shaughnessy is a proven muckraker and blowhard, but Manny has a history, too. What is clear is that Manny doesn't play hurt, and, like Nomar, he takes a seat at the least opportune times and doesn't seem to give a shit. That's not admirable or valuable, whether his injuries are legit or he's just playing retarded mind games with management. As much as we love him when he's going 3 for 5 with a homer and three RBI, he really isn't worth his salary anymore. It could be that now is a great time to ship him to a team that needs the bat for the last two months. If they have no intention of picking up his option for next year or offering another contract, why not get something for him now?
Shaughnessy was the one who stirred the pot during the whole Luccino/Epstein debacle in '05, so I'm not surprised when he says he "knows" Sox management is upset--they probably fed him the quote and let him do what he does best. And for whatever reason, JD Drew can be out of the lineup with a last-minute injury, but Manny has to be Cal Ripken or else he's accused of jaking it. Boston sportswriters at their finest, ladies and gentlemen!
if we get rid of Manny now, the season is destroyed. Over. Gone. No hope. You simply will not find an adequate replacement at this point. After the season, do you exercise the option? I say yes because of what he means to the team--we saw that graphically last Sept and October when the Sox could barely beat Baltimore without him but swept through the final week and October when he returned. One more point: if a 36 yr old player who plays more games than almost any one else in the lineup says his knee hurts, I believe him. Only in Shaughnessy Land does a Hall of Fame veteran not get the benefit of the doubt, but this kind of horrific, divisive treatment. I would like Dan to shut up now for the good of the team and for the good of Red Sox Nation. The Yankees are the enemy, not our own key players!
Time too trade Him
Manny is a great player, no doubt about it. But, if he doesn't play, what good is he? By the way, this has nothing to do with Shaughnesy...his opinions are his own. Manny is responsible for his actions, or lack thereof. Let's stop treating him like a naughty child, and let him take the consequences of his actions.
One of the best things about the Celtics run was that CHB was mostly nowhere near the Red Sox. I did not miss his biased irrelevancy. Sorry to see him back on the scene.
Too much smoke and not enough sunlight on the whole Manny situation. Manny's agent really should have cleared up the knee thing at the end of the 06 season. Now the meme of "Manny quit on the team in 06" has reached the stage where people casually treat it like common knowledge, and that has not been proven at all. Sad days, indeed.
I can't believe anyone would stick up for Manny this time. They all must be PINK HATS . Don't be stupid. It's time for Manny and Boris to go.
How Manny times do we give him the benefit of the doubt about an injury? Who doesn't go to work in pain some days? That's life. So Manny excuses, so little time. Say good bye to this headcase
I can't believe anyone would stick up for Manny this time. They all must be PINK HATS . Don't be stupid. It's time for Manny and Boris to go.
The media (shaughnessy) loves to blow manny being manny way out of proportion. The guy has earned the benefit of the doubt. It is July, not October. This will be long forgotton when the third championship is won.
How many did Tedy ballgame win???
are we so afraid to lose manny that we cant admit that he is just a thorn in our side...he doesnt run out ground balls his defense is shoddy and as a team player he is a lost cause......let the yankees have him seems somedays hes playing for them anyhow....we are building for the future..i wanna see manny have to cut off his dreds anyhow. hes got only a few years left if the yanks want our cast-offs let them have em.!! if for any reason the jays rockies or marlins wanna give us the real ramirez back then im all for it. halladay or holliday both are good replacements...left field is a position of plenty... get waht we can and run...ooohh by the way theo....did pittsburgh ever call you asking for 4 so-so minor leaguers in exchange for a lefty setup man and an above average outfielder?? im just hoping theo you have some plan of attack because unless we get a reliable set up man and bullpen were toast...hard to admit but its true...
I can't believe anyone would stick up for Manny this time. They all must be PINK HATS . Don't be stupid. It's time for Manny and Boris to go.
When you're 36 and your best years are probably behind you, when the general manager finds your antics unfunny, when you have physical altercations with a teammate and then with a road secretary old enough to be your father but mostly when the owner finds your remarks "personally offensive" then it's time to be on your very best behavior. Manny has moved from loveably eccentric to negatively disruptive. I'll be surprised if he's with the Sox much longer. But don't fear ---Omar Minaya will have a reservation waiting for him next to Pedro at the Shea Hilton --- the home of aging and injured ballplayers.
Trade him to Pittsburgh for Jason Bay.
Manny doesn't get it. He's letting his teammates, management, and most importantly, the fans down. I'm sure most of his teammates have their own ailments, but this is the Yankees in a pennant race at the end of July. We all understand that, but not Manny. We all know what you get with Manny, but we have reached the tipping point - he's gotta go immediately. It's an insult to all of us to allow him to continue to wear the Bosox uniform. Management needs to make a statement and not let him play another game. I understand he's in the lineup today - I think that's an insult to all of Red Sox nation.
How about we run Shaughnessy out of town. All he does is sit around and wait for players who he doesn't like to do anything that he could possibly make sound 10 times worse than it is. I don't agree with everything Manny does, but as far as injuries like this go you have to give him the benefit of the doubt. How does Shaughnessy know that players are sick of him? As far as I could tell, all the players hate Shaughnessy so why would they even talk to him never mind tell him that they don't like manny.
There is no way the sox would not pick up his contract option at the end of this year. Why would they just let him go to the Yankees...which is exactly where he'd go if he were a free agent. The only way they'd get rid of him is if they picked up his option (s) then traded him for no where near what he's worth. There is no way to replace him in the lineup.
Sox have won 2 world series with him, why not try for a few more.
I don't even know why I read this garbage. Shaughnessey is such a miserable human being, I hope no one takes him seriously.
Bye bye Manny. Thanks for the memories and all your great hits and kookiness. Time to be Manny for another team!!!
Leave Manny alone! Sox fans are too dramatic! He's a special athlete and that cannot be forgotten. He isn't hurting anybody, he helps the team win. There are a lot worse things Manny could be doing.
Manny is still one of the best hitters in baseball but he isn't doing the redsox a favor by all his crazy stints.I think its time for a change.
Face it, Manny turned in his membership card to Red Sox Nation last night with his refusal to play. Reminds me of when Nomar didn't get off the bench to support his team mates......and then was out of town as soon as the brass could trade him. I expect Theo's phone is currently busy. The question is "Who wants this guy after he's quit two out of the past three years on one of the best teams in MLB??" Small market teams can't afford his price tag and Steinbrenner already passed once on this circus. Thanks for the memories Manny.......and don't let the door hit your disgraced a$$ on the way out of town!!!
no, nobody cares what shaughnessy thinks or says, he definitely tries to stir up trouble and is a moron himself. But if you can think for yourself, how can you not be outraged by manny? This isn't the first suspicious injury the guy has had over the years, and they always seem to coincide with some kind of drama and at some key point in the season. He is a completely selfish, moronic, me-first player that happens to be graced with unbelievable talent in a team sport. Only he still doesn't understand the part about the team. I was one of the people who used to shrug off his antics because he could hit.... but when he sat out the remainder of the 2006 season (why put forth any effort if we're not making the playoffs - let someone else sweat for nothing), the real manny values started to show. Then when he pushed down the traveling secretary, that did it for me. The guy has no morals whatsoever and it affects the team from the top to the bottom - think about a joker you work with that could get away with things like that. Bad for morale no matter where it happens. 100% it is time for him to go.
I think Shaughnessey has a ruptured labrum and that he needs to go. Boston is deaf to his pathetic words and the Globe needs to ship him to the Times.
I do not always agree with Dan Shaughnessy but I do on the Manny issue. I hope Manny hears it from the crowd today and everyday until he is gone. This has got to effect the other players. And if he plays today how bad could the knee have been in the first place. GOOD-BY MANNY so much for the new Manny wanting to finish his career in Boston. I just feel bad that the Sox will get little or nothing for him.
I think Shaughnessey has a ruptured labrum. Boston is deaf to his pathetic words and the Globe needs to ship him to the Times.
Manny has played in 95 games this season. If missing two games in July (it's only July, Dan) means he's fit for September, I've got no problem with that. I've also got no problem with Theo and Co. deciding to spend that 20 million a little differently next season.
My question: Can we trade Shaughnessy to another newspaper? Sure, he's a relic with no fastball and a slow bat, but surely one could expect to get a typesetter or an obit writer and a barrel of ink in return for The Shank and his inchoate frothing.
In other news, the Red Sox organization hates Curt Schilling, Nomar Garciaparra hates baseball, the Red Sox will never recover the loss of Johnny Damon, and Pedro Martinez was responsible for throwing Zimmer to the ground in that playoff series against the Yankees.
This guy is a joke. He has no clue what's going on. Sure he's entertaining, but he's not in the same league as McAdam, Buckley, Massarotti, Bradford et al. I don't even know why I read the Globe anymore. Must be just for Gordon Edes, Amalie Benjamin and Mike Reiss. Shaughnessy is really just someone who writes letters to the editor, and gets paid for submitting them. Get a life, Dan.
Manny has really carried this "Manny being Manny" stuff to far. It's more than obvious that it's about him, and his selfishness. You know for years, I've put up with it as a die hard fan, I even sprung for a $200 Ramirez jersey! This has just gotten out of hand. We are in the middle of a playoff push with the Rays ahead of us, and the Yankees just behind, and closing fast. The last thing we need is this kind of distraction. Trade him somewhere for a young bat, and lets wash our hands of this. This is really a disgrace. After all the patience, money, and respect the Sox have paid Manny, and this is our reward! A spolied brat! Manny your not a man, your a baby!
I think he had a sore knee and wanted an extra day's rest so he could be there for the rest of the season. Dan Shaunessy is a complete POS and is one of those red sox "fans" who seem to hate the team and all they have to say is negative. His columns are always pure trash that try and rile people up. That's all he's trying to do. Get a rise out of his readers. He has no special insight. Everyone in the red sox clubhouse hates Dan Shaughnessy.
It is no coincidence that Manny's 'pain' coincided with Papi's return. He is showing the Sox that they need BOTH in the lineup to be succesful. What he doesn't realize apparently, is that he is also showing that he places his own interests ahead of the team's...something NOBODY will tolerate, or at least they shouldn't.
No matter how much Manny is being Manny, he's not an idiot. He needs to play and get his 35 hrs and 110 rbi if he wants to make $20 million next year. Why would he just give up at-bats when so much is riding on this season for him? He might be resting his knee now to minimize serious injury later in the season, when it does matter. Didn't Manny get hot during last year's post season? Cynics would argue that Manny knows he's on the decline and wants the Sox to pick the option now, while he might still have a chance. I am optimistic. Part of Manny's legacy is how he's a Yankee killer, why wouldn't he play if he could?
Get texacanna or what ever his name is and make is priotity #1, we lost to many games by not scoring. Just a run or two and wake would have 3 more wins and beckette would hav four or five more wins.
An open letter to Manny -
As a long time fan of yours, I am beyond disappointed in your recent behavior. I'm sick of it. In the past, I gave you the benefit of the doubt or felt the Sox couldn't succeed without you. I've changed my mind.
Do you have any idea how many young men would be thrilled to be in your shoes? Not even including your talent, they'd be thrilled just to make it to the major leagues and get to play at Fenway, or anywhere else for that matter. Most people can't even dream about the kind of money you make and you take it for granted. It's pathetic.
Do you have any idea how many kids adore you and have your posters in their rooms and wear t-shirts or jerseys with your name and number on them? What kind of lesson and message are you sending to them? What about your own children? Your behavior is nothing less than a slap in the face to Sox fans and the entire organization. Just once, think about the kids who are attending a game, maybe for the very first time and can't wait to see their hero, Manny, only to find out that Manny isn't playing. It's a life lesson in disappointment if you are truly sick or injured, but when you have another "phantom illness or injury", it's the ultimate in disrespect on your part. Disrespect for the fans, your teammates and the organization that employs you. Oh yes, perhaps you need to be reminded.... you are an EMPLOYEE.
I watched you take those 3 pitches in NY and immediately my gut knew you took them on purpose. I don't believe you had any intention of swinging the bat, no matter what the pitch was. Your theatrics in CA were beyond stupid, comparable to a 5 year old showing off for his friends. That was an act and a poor one at that. You aren't paid to act. YOU ARE PAID TO PLAY and give 100% every time you bat or take the field.
Your behavior is that of a spoiled child who insists on getting the last word during his temper tantrum. I hope the Sox office calls you on it. There are plenty of other players who'd love to take your place, and I'd rather root for a good player who gives 100% than a great player who only tries hard when he's in the mood.
You are truly living the American Dream, but apparently it's not the Dominican dream. Perhaps you should give it up if you don't appreciate it.
Morons...put your Shaughnessy hatred aside, its not like he's the only media member discussing this today, it doesn't work this time. I swear some of you are only coming to Manny's side just because DS is against him. Because seriously, its baffling that anyone can support this man-child anymore.
New fans...I guess that's the consequence of 2 WS rings in 4 years...
There was not a single shred of evidence in that entire article. It was ALL hearsay.
"Something's got to give," he writes. "The owners are mad. The manager is frustrated. The GM is frustrated. Teammates are angry."
Some proof of any of this? No? Then I have to assume it's all made up. Shaughnessy is already more of an embarrassment to the Globe then Manny will ever be to the Red Sox.

It's hard for me to believe this is not in some way orchestrated by Scott Boras. If the Sox pick up Manny's two option years, Boras gets nothing because he was not Manny's agent when that deal was struck. It's clear the Sox do not want to sign him to a contract beyond the two option years and after two more years Manny's body could really be breaking down and no one will sign him, at least not for the $$ Boras likes (he represents Andruw Jones...Jones stunk up Atlanta his final year and still Boras managed to get him an 8 figure deal). If, however, the Sox don't take the options, Boras has a 36 year old slugger to shop, instead of a 38 year old. And if the Sox want to trade him, they first have to get his approval because he's a 10-5 guy (10 years in the majors, 5 on the same team). So Boras can then negotiate with a potential trade partner and say, "Well, we'll agree but only if you extend him beyond the options or agree to not excercise the options."
If I were the Sox, and clearly I'm not I would put Manny on the DL. Then I'd send him to Pawtucket or Maine to rehab. And leave him there until the year was up. I don't know if it's possible to do I don't know if there's a cleear cut rule to length of time a guy can spend in the minors rehabbing. If not, I'd just outright cut him. Yes, you'd still owe him but chances are you'll end up having to eat the rest of his $$ anyway to get rid of him.
I'm not a Shaughnessy fan, far from it. But I am fed up with Manny's BS and the people who defend him with "Manny being Manny" or "well look at what he's done for the Sox." Besides, in '06 the Sox were not out of it until the Yankees sweep that Manny sat on.
Its not about Manny my friends..its about the TEAM ..thats where all you folks defending Manny are wrong, dead wrong.
Manny has put himself before his team and management MUST now trade him as this latest act has clearly irratated his teammates. You cannot allow that.
THerefore, look for Manny to be traded before week's end . Manny has been GREAT but sometimes even great things come to an END. THank you for the memories Manny, best of luck to you elsewhere- UNLESS you play the Sox !
Manny is smater then anyone gives credit for. Lets see if they can win with him in the lineup today before we all ride him out of town. After the season we can make the business decissions. Now its time to show us what you can do Manny!
trade him to the N.L and go get Matt Holiday from Colorado,we should be able to get a descent prospect for Manny.
I would love to know how Manny's production is going to be replaced? The bottom line is, now that Schilling is out of the picture the media needs a bad guy. Let's not talk about Ellsbury hitting .250 or any other players struggles. Focus on Manny because he is Manny. Hey, if you can find another left fielder that will hit as well as Manny is now, even at the age of 36, and provide the protection in the lineup for Ortiz then by all means move on.
What people do not realize is that if Manny is replaced with someone else then Ortiz and Lowell's numbers will dip.
The Globs should be ashamed of itself for letting media members carry agendas constantly in their columns. Hey Dan, how about some opinions about the actual game last night. It's the biggest game of the year (you said so yourself) and you can't come up with anything else besides a rewrite of how you hate Manny? How about Tito not pinch hitting for Varitek? How about the shift backfiring against Giambi? How about Chamberlin and Youk? For the love of god, come up with something original.
To anyone that thinks Dan Shaughnessy just makes this stuff up, hear this. There are two ways to get information. On the record and off the record. None of the owners or Manny's teammates are going to come out "on the record" and say that Manny is tanking. But Shaughnessy is around the owners and around the players. He is at Fenway and in the clubhouse. He hears what is going on. It's like if you overheard some co-workers trashing the boss then you went over to them and asked them what they think of the boss so it can be agenda for the next meeting. Think they would pony up ? Not a chance. But still by overhearing you know what the rumblings are.
I'm not here to judge Manny or Shaughnessy. I'm not here to tell you Manny is lying or telling the truth or trying to send some kind of message. But it's obvious that there are some in the organization, from teammates to the front office, that are annoyed with his recent behavior.
That leads me to believe that it has been going on for awhile and it now is coming close to the boiling point.
In Dan's video he said Manny was a good guy. I think he truly believes that. He doesn't hate Manny. None of us do, he IS a good guy. He just seems to do a lot of things without thinking and sooner or later that has a cumulative effect.
Manny is 36 years old. He should be a leader on this team or any team he is on. He should be a veteran that the young guys look up to. But what kind of example is he setting when he laughs about playing a bloop hit into a triple ? Or when he pushes down a 64 year old traveling team secretary ? Or when he pulls himself out of the lineup at the last second ? Or when he refuses to pinch hit in a key game in Philadelphia a few years back ?
Manny is not trying to be a jerk or trying to be malicious. But he does stuff without thinking. And that's really too bad. He should be an elder statesman and carry himself with class. But he just does not seem to be able to do that.
I'd love Manny to finish out his career in Boston. But I think at this point he is going to have tl stand up and take responsibility for his actions. To his teammates, his manager, the GM, the owners and the fans. And if he does, I think he would get another mulligan. But he has to change as well, and act like the leader he should be.
Let's all hope this will happen.
This is analogous to a much larger problem.
Let me use Puerto Rico as an example. Over these past 40 years we couldn't give money to them fast enough. (Probably close to 30 billion annually now) They pay no federal income taxes, and IS THERE GRATITUDE? Prior to the 04 elections they ordered our troops off OUR military bases on the island AND WE COMPLIED.
Why? The Hispanic caucus knows. We've given away out patria.
All of you taken in by the do gooder theme over the last 40 years (which no other country remotely endorses (can you imagine any nation passing laws against its own people such as affirmative action)) I think all of you taken in, now realize you've been taken.

For years now Manny has been a distraction that we as fans and the Red Sox as an organization have put up with as long as he was putting up his .315avg, 35hrs, & 135RBI's. He is no longer that hitter anymore. Why we continue to give him the benefit of the doubt is beyond me. Ortiz played on one knee all season last year, then Manny gets a scrape and has to sit out for two games. How many times did Ortiz ask out of the lineup last season? None, that's how many. I've had enough of Manny and his antics, he's not the hitter he once was and is not worth the 20million option for next season, there are plenty of guys in the Majors who hit .285 with 25-30hr and 95 to 100 RBI's that aren't making 20 million a year. I might be able to deal with those #'s from someone who gave everything they had day in and day out, but Manny has once again proven he cares only about himself and not the team.
Get rid of him.
I am not surprised. I thought a long time ago that this would be Manny's last year in Boston. The look that Theo gave when Manny "sat" on the ball said it all. If they could move him before the trade deadline all the better. In any case I don't look for Manny to with the Red Sox come next spring
I need a day off once in a while too. And I sit in a chair when I work.
Give the guy a break - for all the good (and good fun) he's brought to Boston...
I'm tired of hearing such final straw comments every time the guy gets worn down a little bit. From all accounts, he works harder than anyone in prep, lifting, batting practice, etc... maybe he learn learn to back off a little bit and he'd get sore less. But then you'd all be complaining that Manny is lazy (yet still).
Shaunessy is just trying to sell papers folks - that's HIS job.
Manny is like a clown. He's been tolerated all these years because and only because he happens to be a clown who can swing a big bat and hit a ball a long way efficiently. He's not much been better than an actual clown in the field and on any given day can turn left field into his own circus. His antics, once pardonable, even endearing, have become insufferable. This year has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that "Manny being Manny" is ultimately about Manny being all about Manny. His selfish and deplorable actions speak volumes about the man. How can you push a sixty-five year old man? How can you leave your team in the lurch against your Arch-rivals. I'll tell you how, you think you're more valuable than you are, you rest on your laurels, and you think of yourself before your fans and worst your teammates. He's a great hitter but we don't need everything else that comes with his big bat. We won't get equal value in any trade mainly because Manny's reputation precedes him. It's time to cut our losses and let Manny go listen to his own drummer somewhere else. If it's in the Bronx, then so be it. It would be even funnier watching A-Rod and Manny lose in NY together.
I am more worried about the influence Boras might have over Manny...remember, if he re-ups with the Sox Boras does not get a penny; but if he signs anywhere else then Boras cashes in.
Pfffttt. Happens every year. Manny does something stupid. Management gets their boxers in a bunch. Tito gets PO'd. Teammates (aka Kevin Youkilis) get uptight. 2 weeks later we're all one big happy family again. Face it. Manny's a diva. But who would you rather have up there in the clutch? Him or A-Rod. I thought so.
Shaunessy is a hack and has to stir the puddin' just to keep from getting overshadowed by Bob Ryan. This is a non-story. Move along. Move along.
I have been a Man-Ram fan for years. But, I do think it's probably time to trade him out and look to move on. If Matt Holiday is available I think he would be a great fit for Red Sox Nation. If Manny does go, and God forbid it's to the Yankees, we will just have to live with it. He has served RSN well and I won't forget what he has done, just as I refuse to forget what Johnny Damon did. But, it appears it's time for him, and RSN, to move on.
Shaughnessy is a hack. Desperate for attention and relevance. He knows the national media will pick up his story but also that they won't know that the Sox fans have long ago tuned him out.
I have to agree with the commentators on Shaughnessy...first he invokes Bob Crane an inflated, retired "hey good ol buddy, ol pal" Mass. pol whose main endearing quality (among many) ---even at the height of his power--was that he was friendly with Bobby#4, the most tragic example of knee debilitation in the history of sport. Thus Crane should know better than to evoke "last straws" on any player because of knees...(what would Bobby#4 himself say, now THAT'S a story!) If Bobby "old buddy ol'pal" had played--and come to think of it I think he did-- he'd know that aging knees are pretty fickle joints...I'm not saying there isn't a story here, but you don't start it off by wallowing about the EMC Club and speaking to retired pols for a quick quote...neither Bob "old buddy ol' pal" Crane nor that egomaniac Jay-Lo has-been actor are proper spokespersons for fandom. Dan's posted video quotes the "upper echelon" of management over and over, which tells me 1.) he's been the Sox beat writer far too long and 2.) he's looking for a better exclusive seat above home plate. Perhaps his currying favor from TW (no, not TSW! the current upper echelon who alone, seemingly, has the energy to summon frustration and disappointment in his voice ) may work, but it's sad...Dan should wander about the park, maybe slog his way over to Sections 6,7 8,9, 32, 35 and 45, the DD seats, "Conig's corner" and all standing room sections to get some real fan feedback. Until then, this lucky charm beat man shows me that he cannot report his way out of an obviously far too large Fenway Frank wrapper...
Manny is a tumor, cut him out and let the healing begin.
people who say he could be doing worse things, what could these worse things be? pushing down the elderly? oh wait, he already did that.
People are acting like this 'everyone is fed up with Manny' stuff is something new. It's been this way for many years now. People are fed up with him throughout the organization and in the stands, but no, it will not lead to him being traded any time soon. In addition to questionable behavior, what other thing has been going on with Manny for many years? He's been among the top 3 righthanded hitters in baseball! He is not a replaceable commodity, and if the Sox expect to have any postseason success this year, they will need Manny to keep plugging away and acting like a fool at the same time.
Shaughnessy is clamoring for some attention, I'm relatively sure he knows better than to think anything imminent is going to happen because of Manny's absence. Silly.
This is the worst and most hate-filled Shaughnessy article I've ever read. He just says the same thing over and over. Manny has the same right as any other player to preserve his health and the same responsibility not to compromise his team's chances by playing when he is not physically up to it. How do Shaughnessy or any of today's Manny-hating posters know how badly his knee hurts? How many of them have ever hit a homer off major league pitching without a good knee? How much better could Manny's knee have gotten in one day? Maybe not much. We'll get an idea today and tomorrow. Yay Manny! Thanks for all the great hitting and even some great fielding that contributed so much to 2004 and 2007 championships. Go Red Sox!!
Thanks you #41
'Shaughnessy is a hack. Desperate for attention and relevance. He knows the national media will pick up his story but also that they won't know that the Sox fans have long ago tuned him out.'
I would far rather have Shaughnessy ridden out of town than Manny. Stupid annoying hacks who think he can control the fans, and tell them what to think, with these awful stories.
Isn't this what the whole stupid dirt Dogs pages were created for? If I needed to be told how to cheer for the Sox I would still read that drivel.
Oh and please shut up Shawnasissy!
(Ha that was stupid but funny)
PS I also don't care about pink hats and hate the 'Yankees Suck' chant.
Manny is a joke and an embarassment. I rather see games won or lost on the basis of hustle and plying the game right, than having the likes of him making a mockery of it. We have seen and witnessed his "Being Manny" so many times that even when he might be under the weather, the perception is that he faking it and in one of his moods.
This gut is a pure, unadulterated idiot. He is an embarassment to his teammates, the fans, and baseball in general. Under no circumstances should his contract option be re-newed for 2009. He does not show up, or play for anyone but himself. He is the epitomy of selfishness, and a bufoon. Better to remove the distraction now, than to continue with the nonsense.
41 is right on; when Shaughnessy predicts victory, its guarantee of a lost season; when he cries doom and gloom, the sox win.
In this case, someone already has said Manny has patellar tendinitis, big name for jumper's knee; MRI will be clean, but it can come on quickly (and heal just as quickly) but it makes it very painful to put pressure or pivot on the the knee and the leg. Give me a break: I've had enough of this hysteria: please get rid of Shaughnessy for good. Manny is not necessarily the politically correct model ballplayer; but don't make things up.
Whay can't Manny sit out because of an injury while anyone else can and be allowed to? He plays almost every game.
hope this is the -no mas
manny is no team player. never has never will he is just like bonds nobody wants him or his attiude .remember when nomar faked the injury and did not play vs yanks .he was gone the nxt yr. and so will manny .when he saw jaba pitching for the yanks he chickend out of playing . he is a digrace to baseball . get a haircut a new batting helmet you a....hole.....
The Red Sox Management that is in power, should be greatful for the players they have. Even though they did not make the deal for Manny back in 1999 because that was a Dum Dum General manager before the being shown the door. Red Sox ownership have won two World Series thanks to the players and moves they made. John Henry and the Management should be thankful to the players on this club. I am not saying that the Management should kiss the players butt. The players make enough money (way too much) this is a child's game that is blown way out of site for entertament. I feel that Manny enjoys being the center of attention if the Red Sox Management say to Manny good bye it will be either in a trade before the dead line or let him become a free agent. I am sure they will fill the void in 2009 for Big Popi. The Sox did fine without Johnny (I will never play for the Yankees) Damon. Damon, Clemens, are liers and traders to the Red Sox. Its not of the things Manny does, its how much are the Red Sox willing to pay for his services ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$).
Nobody talks about Varitek doing nothing. Nobody talks about Elsbury doing nothing. Manny doesn't play two games and it's the end of the world. This Dan guy just writes, he probably never hit a 90 mph fastball, so he can just talk and talk. Manny's ability to hit cannot be easily replaced. Yes, he deserves special treatment, just like any other good athlete. It's just the way it is.

Why would we care what Dan Shaughnessy says....if it proven with the likes of Tomase, Borges and Barnicle that writers do not tell the truth and have agendas against players and teams.
Shaunessey sites no sources...from what I see...it is HIS opinion. How does he know the manager, owners, or players are fed up? Who said it Dan?
This is the BS that causes Manny to shut up around the media. If you know FACTS Dan, print them. From what I read, your column has about the same amount of substance behind it as that joker that stated Manny was fined 6 figures.
Free speech is free speech ... just don't state your opinion as being facts unless you have proof behind your so call journalism..
Get a life shaughnessey... made his career preying on red sox fans' fear of not winning a world series during their lifetime. Now they've won two and this clown still writes hatchet jobs. There's a reason no player or front office member talks to him... they all hate him.
And thanks for implying that some old government official walking through the luxury boxes speaks for the average fan. That's accurate. Some retired guy with season tickets and access to the luxury suites and boxes does NOT speak for me.
Manny Being Manny? Pfft. More like Shaughnessy being Shaughnessy.
Trade Manny for Texiera, then put either Texiera or Youk in left field.
Maybe Manny's days in Boston are over, but 2 days out with a sore knee have nothing to do with it.
Look at the stats for Manny before and after coming to Boston from Cleveland. More production and FEWER trips to the DL. Sure it would be nice if he was an ironman, but that's not Manny. If the occasional rest keeps him from missing months at a time (which happened almost every year with Cleveland) it's OK with me. Even if it's just because Manny doesn't feel right, even if it's on short notice.
The obvious problem here is DAN SHAUGHNESSY. I'd like to run him out of town the same way he wants to get rid of Manny (and previously Schilling, and Pedro, and Clemens, and...). Oh that's right, I don't get a say in hiring or firing for the Globe. Just like you don't make decisions for the Sox, Dan!
Shaughnessy is part of an industry that buys ink buy the barrel. His words are as cheap and as disposable as the material with which they are printed. He is entitled to his obnoxious opinons--"everyone has one"--but his trademark unprofessionalism never ceases to compromise most of what he writes. Shaughnessy is a cartoon.
hey, personally i think manny is one of the few baseball players that still has it right: it's a game, people
and in a game you don't push yourself when you're hurt, you don't throw bats when you don't get a call your way (aka youkilis), you try to keep a positive attitude making light of "funny" moments, not getting worked up about what people say, and you try your best; and if at the end of the day you win, then great, but if not, then that's cool too
I agree leave Manny alone he is only making almost 19 million dollars this season, he is allowed to tell his employer he does not want to do his job today and be able to show up for work tomorrow and decide then if he wants to work on the next scheduled day. The Sox could have saved the money on the MRI on his knees and had a CT performed on his head , this act has gotten old for me.
Manny Ramirez, is, without question, one, maybe two, sandwiches short of a Picnic! You can't reason with madness.
Seamhead
He's a prima donna. He is whinning like a child about his contract. I would rather see the Sox have a dip for awhile than to keep a player whose act should have had its curtain dropped on it months ago. Get lost Manny. Seems like we have a lot of pink hatted men and women in Red Sox nation who think that quiting is normal part of our lives. No wonder baseball is mirroring the weak and pathetic citizens of Red Sox Nation and beyond who enjoy highly paid and "me only" ballplayers. Get some balls folks and have some pride. Manny is a jerk and gave up on his team. What is it that a lot of you don't get? Duh, never mind you simple minded Manny fans.
Let me remind all of you Ramirez apologists, Shaughnessey is one of the most gifted sportswriters since Fitzgerald this town has seen. Yes and he is recognized nationally as well. You don't want to read good stuff stick to the Herald and look at the pictures. As far as Manny is concerned he lost me when he took three consecutive strikes after being asked to pinch hit. He had no plans to swing. And to push down a 65 year old worker because he couldn't get enough tickets come on take your heads out.
Personally with the exception of 2004 & 2007, there has been WAY TOO MUCH stupidity from Manny. While some could point to the contract extensions to Big Papi, and management could have done likewise with Manny, there are the stupid things, like the behind the back, high five catch, double play in Baltimore this season, and the trips into the Monster Scoreboard last year, and the other things, that are really unprofessional. While Ted Williams was outspoken, he did the walk, and did the talk. Yaz was a legend in Left Field, and Jim Rice...the true unsung hero of the BoSox that needs to be in Cooperstown. Manny is pulling high school stupidity for a $20 Million dollar contract, and I think it is time Theo pulls the plug on his future in Boston. It is time for Manny to realize, the fans and the management and ownership are fed up, and he either waits till the end of the season, or do the Nation a favor, and give the Nation the approval to send you packing. Enough is enough, this is a pennant race, and a business. Shape up or get out...it's that simple!
Enough of "Manny being Manny " already. He's not the great hitter fans make him out to be. He's been known to kill a rally or two by hitting in to a DP. His attitude and actions only hurt the Sox. Get rid of him, even to the Yankees if necessary. Let them put up with his crap. I, for one want to see him GOOOOOONE. I think Matt Holliday would be a big upside over Manny (Better hitter, fielder & attitude), and hope Theo can swing a deal to bring him to Boston.
Rest assured he won't be back next year. The knee pain notwithstanding, too much of a distraction especially for the rookies plus too much $$. Think about it. Count the errors and sloppy play compared to the run production. Defense wins games. Watch the A's
I hate to tell you nation, Manny will continue to be Manny in Boston for the rest of his career, no team in their right mind will trade for him now knowing that he could walk at the end of the year and they would get nothing. By the way Dan O needs to get off Manny's back and realize that he is a has been in the Boston media market now.
Totally agree with Chet... Trade Manny for Tex! I am a huge Manny fan but this year he has gone too far... pushing Youk and a old man.... he gives up every year about this time with "injury." Note to Manny just be team player... Your fans, teammates and red sox nation need you... dont give up on us... If you wanna give up just let us trade you for someone who wants to be in a red sox uniform and who wants to play with great teammates in front of the greatest fans.... Go SOX!!
