Still working on Manny deal

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff July 31, 2008 11:01 AM

The three-way deal for Manny Ramirez was still a work in progress between Boston, Florida and Pittsburgh. One major league source indicated he felt the deal was slightly hung up on an extra prospect that Pittsburgh might want to feel as though they're receiving proper return (they're getting Jeremy Hermida and prospects) for left fielder Jason Bay and reliever John Grabow.

There are different scenarios for that prospect. There's the possibility that the extra prospect would have to come from Boston, which would be a real problem considering the Red Sox are dealing Manny Ramirez and offering to pay the rest of his salary. (Incredibly, the Florida Marlins might acquire a $20 million superstar and make money on the deal). If that were the case would the Sox require another player (shortstop Jack Wilson?) to go along with Bay and Grabow? There's also the possibility that Florida has to pony up another blue-chipper to make it work.

And certainly if this falls through, Tampa Bay, in spite of their interest in Adam Dunn, would rather jump in and take Bay. They have a plethora of prospects to pull it off.

  1. KEEP MANNY, noone can live up to him, if fans and ownership start to get behind him he will love boston even more than he already does and will want to stay and put up big numbers the rest of his career here.

  1. You're an idiot an so is Manny.

  1. No one can live up to Manny? Take a look at all of the players with numbers comparable to Manny; a lot of them are making less than five million a year. Throw the antics aside, his production isn't worth the money. Schilling was on EEI this morning saying how disruptive Manny has been, and without saying it directly, also eluded to the fact that no one really cares for him for what he has done over the years.

Face it, he's on the downside of his career. He wants a 4 year contract NOW because he knows in 2 years he won't be able to do it anymore. Manny is past his prime, deal with it.

  1. This is my sixty second year of being a Red Sox fan...long before there was a 'Nation'. Manny should go find out how much 'peace' he'll experience, or how kindly he'll be treated in another market when he's being paid 20million for his option..and acts so lacksadaisical.ly....For the rest of this year he should be made to play or be embarassed by his behavior (publically) Makes one yearn for Dick Williams to manage the team for a day (or a week)

  1. The Red Sox are justified in their frustration with Manny but they should not deal him for less than he is worth - there are a handful of other players in the game with his offensive production and they cannot deal him for substantially less than equal production just to get rid of a lazy outfielder. He's a first ballot Hall of Famer and Jason Bay CLEARLY is not - bad trade, move on!

  1. Anyone who says the Sox should keep Manny after what he said to ESPN last night is not a real fan. I've been one of Manny's biggest backers since he came to Boston in 2001, but saying the team doesn't deserve him is just over the line. It's time for him to go. He's clearly affecting the team's concentration, despite what the players may say. It's been a great, productive ride but I'm on Bay Watch until 4 p.m.

  1. Jack Wilson as a throw-in player? Are you serious? He's the only other "big" name player in Pittsburgh. How did you get a job covering sports? I couldn't even tell you who else the Pirates have that the Red Sox would want, but asking for Wilson might be enough to make the Pirates just send Bay to Tampa.

Kudos to their new management for taking advantage of the AL East race to create a bidding war.

  1. Newell,
Ownership is behind him. John Henry has stated publicly that he does not want to trade Manny. This comes down to; 1) Manny not wanting to be here and 2) Manny not wanting the Sox to exercise his two options. He believes, as he has stated publicly, that he can get 4yrs at $25million per year, if he is a free agent at the end of this year. If not he will be here for 2 yrs (maybe) at 20million per. He is "concerned" of what type of contract he can get at 38 turning 39 years old after earning "only" 40 million over the next two years. As always it comes down to Money, Money, Money. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but, I'm afraid Manny does not share the same emotionaly attatchment to the City, Team, or to the Fans; that you so admirably have for him.

  1. Why would Wilson have to be included in this deal? Bay and Grabow is plenty enough. And the world will not come to an end if the Sox give up a prospect. Yes, they're moving Manny and paying for his salary, but they're also acquiring Bay, a similar player to Manny, for very cheap come next year(7.5M). Not to mention that Grabow would help out their pen, too.

  1. Would Pittsburg take Pedroia? I have been sick of his cocky attitude. Just because it turns out the hobbit can hit the ball doesn't mean that it has to go to his head. Next thing you know He'll be asking for extra tickets. The nerve...

  1. He's gone at the end of the year anyway, might as well get something for him. And Bay is a pretty good player.

  1. the sox adding another prospect and picking up jack wilson along with bay and grabow could be great.

  1. Manny being Manny is no excuse for not beating out ground balls or keeping his bat on his shoulder for an at bat because of disagreement with management.

  1. I hope manny leaves Boston, Even though the Red Sox are my favorite team. The Marlins are my 2nd favorite team, and they need manny because Their current outfielders dont produce. Also, if the Sox are to want another player from PIT, Give Wilson, Because Brian Bixler (AAA Indianapolis Indians) could fill Wilsons Shoes.

  1. aww...just some love would do? I think we already gave him 168 million reasons to feel "loved". Get real. Bye Manny. Don't let the door hit you where the good Lord split you.

  1. I am a Pittsburgh fan and i was wonderin if it is posible for the pirates to get manny i dont think the pirates are geting the fair end of the trade.

  1. "Manny being Manny" is no excuse for not running hard to first base or keeping his bat on his shoulder for an entire at bat. Manny is poison to the club right now. It they can pull out a trade perhaps they can avoid another tailspin (or stop the tailspin) that happened in 2006.

  1. GET MANNY OUT OF THERE, HE IS NOTHING BUT A HEADACHE, BAD INFLUENCE TO OUR OVERALL VERY YOUNG TEAM. HE IS NOT SETTING AN EXAMPLE, AND VIA FREE AGENCY, WE WILL SIGN ANOTHER BIG BAT IN THE OFFSEASON.

  1. thats not true. i love manny to death, but lets see if hes happy in Florida...playing in front of 4,000 fans and never seeing a world series again. hes scum, and its time. jason bay is sightly behind him, production wise, and at least he'll spare us headaches and actually play, in the midsts of a pennant race. everyones tired of manny. its time.

  1. If the Sox have to grease the wheels with an extra prospect to make this work, it's still worth it. Bay is a very good player who is under contract for reasonable money through next year. The Pirates are being greedy, but Bay is their only star and they have to see whether they can get maximum value. The Sox went through this in 2004: did the Cubs really need to get Nomar AND Murton? It showed the Sox were dedicated to the deal in that they were willing to throw in the extra prospect to make it happen. In the end, the Sox won he series and Murton looks like a spare part.

...if fans and ownership get behind him..." ?? What? You know I've been a Manny apologist for years but there's no way anyone can honestly say that the fans in Boston haven't supported Manny. Ownership either. He's basically been allowed a separate set of rules from all the other players. He's dogged it running out ground balls and messed up in the outfield, sat out important games with phantom injuries, and demanded trades almost every off season and still he's been cheered. The fans and ownership HAVE more than supported him and he still wants out.

  1. It's too late for that !!!
Manny has sucked the life out of this team, that is apparent from the way the have been playing what looks to me like " Life-Less " baseball all week. I say cut the cord and get him gone now while we can get something for him. We all know he is walking at the end of the year anyway. I love Manny and consider him one of the best right handed bats in history, but ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.. As far as I am concerened his comments yesterday sealed the deal ...

  1. As a PacNW card carrying member of the Red Sox Nation, can y'all send Manny over here to the Mariner's and take Ichiro? It's not like the Mariner's are going to give the Sox a run for the money, and I think Ichiro could own the Fenway outfield.

  1. Hey Newell,

People in this town have been behind him for the past number of years. It is time that this team has some pride and fans have some respect for it and themselves. I WOULD RATHER LOSE EVERY GAME THE REST OF THE SEASON THEN HAVE MANNY PLAY ANOTHER GAME! This isn't your typical player just trying to get more money. Manny has now proven during the season no less, that the Sox mean nothing to him. In fact the biggest joke is that he loves the fans. If he loved the fans he would not act the way he does on and off the field. He would try hard, he would not be basically showing his disdain for all things Sox by sabotaging the season, the clubhouse, and creating rifts during the most important part of the season.

Manny WAS a dominant hitter for many many years. He IS great protection for Ortiz BUT... is he protection when is won't hustle, when he won't take things serious, when he makes creates such an atmosphere that it starts affecting the clubhouse and everything is focused on him, and in a negative way!

He is due to make at lot of money in the next few years regardless of where he plays. If the team picked up the option and he is still the hitter he and all of his turn a blind eye fans think he is, he will be fairly compensated either by the Sox or some other team in free agency this off season or next.

But the numbers have been declining. What I mean by that is that he is now just another very good player, not the elite player he wants to be compensated for. I would love a youger Jason Bay and use the money saved to maybe strengthen the bullpen, bring in a shortstop, and even pay for some of Lugo's contract in the event we can trade him for something.

So a few years ago when he was making the same noise about really wanting out at the trade deadline, the fans and ownership DID just what you asked. They all got behind him and here we are again! Enough is enough! Have some pride and quite making excuses!

  1. Dan,

Pay attention. There are many players with comparable stats making less than Manny because they have not been free agents. Manny put up huge numbers for Cleveland while being paid relatively squat. That's the way the system works. Do you think Pedroia is a $300K second baseman?

  1. Be careful what you wish for ... can you imagine if Manny actually signs with the Yanks in the off-season - sadness.

  1. Come mid-September, when the Red Sox realize they're not going to the playoffs, we'll see how happy they are with this trade.
