Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff July 31, 2008 10:52 AM

Not much new to report this morning, except that talks between the Red Sox, Marlins, and Pirates about a potential three-team deal that could send Manny Ramirez to Florida remain ongoing.

We'll keep you updated with the latest as we learn it ...

  1. Let's face it. Manny, Pedro, Nomar. These guys obey no rules. They get paid some of the highest salaries in the game. They enjoy the support of the fans and managers who publicly cover for their antics. They still want more. These guys never faced any real adversity in their lives. They have never emotionally matured because they haven't had to--they get what they want because they can play, and that has excused all of their other behavior. Being good at baseball has paved the way for these guys to become lousy human beings. Why are we surprised? Our society treats athletes like gods. Why should we be surprised? No one tells a god what to do, right? Well, that's what the "Mannys" of the sports world act like.

  1. How does this sound?
1 - Pick up Manny's option for next year.
2 - Ship him to Kansas City or Seattle for whatever Bat & prospects you can get, agreeing to pay a large portion of his contract, so that KC can keep him.
3 - Enjoy the show when Manny comes to Boston for the next years and a half, stuck being Manny on the worst AL team.
At least it is nice to ponder....

  1. It is sad to see the Manny/Sox relationship deteriate to this degree. Manny should look at himself, and thank GOD that he has the talent to play ball. What else could he do to earn $20Million a year?? This situation started along time ago and festered over the years. WHY??? Neither the Sox or Manny are blameless here!!! Sox should have fined him for "dogging it" and made Manny see that it was for his own good to do so!!!
Too bad, best #3,#4 combo since Gerhig and Ruth.
Sox can win without Manny and the distraction. Yes, when Manny is the model citizen we will miss him. There is no one person that should be that all important to a team!!! Remember it is a "Team" sport!!!

  1. I am amazed and amused as anyone regarding Manny's attitude. Even more, I am disheartened that any deal the Sox make to rid themselves of Manny will make them lesser team. While a Jamesian approach to player assessment may yield equivalent players statistically in the past year or two, what player would creates the fear in the hearts of opposing managers the way Manny does?
There is only one player that can produce both numbers and fear- Bonds. He's available and cheap money-wise but could be a death-blow to the clubhouse.
Solution? Get great prospects now and an impact player in the off season. I am not saying rollover for the rest of the season but use this time to season what’s there.

  1. Enough is enough. I'm tired of watching someone play the game with no heart. I think you ought to let Johnny Peske teach him a thing or two about commitment and loyalty. My dad grew up with Johnny so I've been a long standing loyal fan.

  1. The Red Sox do not deserve a player like Manny Ramirez. They deserve someone who takes responsibility for his actions. They deserve someone who honors the terms of his contract after they have honored their end to the tune of $160 million. They deserve someone with more than half a brain, who plays hard more than half the time, who excels at more than just the offensive half of the game.

It'll be good if he ends up a Marlin. He already has mastered flopping around on the ground like a fish when trying to locate the baseball that is under him.

  1. The biggest mistake everyone made with this guy was accepting his rule
breaking and giving the excuse "Manny being Manny". Think about this
folks. We - myself included - made excuses for the guy. Shouldn't we expect more from a 36 year old man - married with children? Why did we excuse
his actions? I hope everyone has learned from this. If we ever get another
super star that acts like that - let's put him in his place right away. Let him
know we do not approve and will not tolerate this behavior.

Manny is a great hitter. That's the only good thing I can say about him.

  1. Greetings from LA

The Dodgers, being a marginal team, need MR's help and, at this price, it is a no brainer.

But as a long time BoSox fan, I am GLAD that the Sox can go out and kick butt the rest of this season with the excellent skills of Jason Bay who undoubtedly will be thrilled to be there.

Hads off to BoSox management, and to the best fans in the game.
