Terry Francona reacted decisively when told that Manny Ramirez had been apprehended jaywalking by one of Seattle's finest. "That's the last straw,'' the Sox manager declared. "He's not playing.''

Francona, of course, was joking. He mentioned he's had a couple of jaywalking episodes himself here, though he was never ticketed. "They started yelling at me and I didn't know what was going on,'' he said. "I said, 'OK, I'll walk faster.'''

"In Boston, they yell at you when you don't walk.''

Geoff Baker, blogger extraordinaire for the Seattle Times, was just packing up in the Safeco Field pressbox when he received a call from a newsside colleague, who happened to be at the game and witnessed the exchange between Ramirez and the police officer, who evidently didn't know the identity of his collar. He let Manny off with a few stern words instead of a fine.

The episode, of course, was quickly picked up by Dirtdogs and the Worldwide Leader.

Said Ramirez: "Don't worry about it.''

OK, then, now that we have the police blotter accounted for, on to the lineups:

Sox
Jacoby Ellsbury LF
Dustin Pedroia 2B
J.D. Drew RF
Manny Ramirez DH
Mike Lowell 3B
Kevin Youkilis 1B
Jed Lowrie SS
Jason Varitek C
Coco Crisp CF
Daisuke Matsuzaka P

Mariners
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Jose Lopez 2B
Raul Ibanez LF
Jose Vidro DH
Adrian Beltre 3B
Jeremy Reed CF
Jeff Clement C
Bryan LaHair 1B
Yuniesky Betancourt SS
R.A. Dickey P

  1. Manny has had so many breaks already. I wish he tried to push the police officer to the ground, the way he did to the Sox' traveling secretary.

  1. Sox are winning lately because Lugo's replacement is batting in runs. Jed Lowrie is such a huge improvement over Lugo and did you see Jed's catches over his head in left field. Jed must have learned something at Stanford which only admits the brightest among us.

  1. "didn't know the identity of his collar."

Isn't the point of the collar to hold the ID tag?

  1. Manny's had too many breaks because he can hit a baseball with the best of them--or at least he could in the past. He's certainly not worth $20 million to the Sox, and it is going to be a blow to his overinflated ego when he signs with another team for a lot less than that.

As for Jed Lowrie, let him keep playing. Alex Cora is a known entity. Lowrie can only improve if he gets more playing time, and he is doing pretty good already. Something can be done with Lugo--I could use a gardener--just keep him off the field where all he does is hurt the team.
