Tito talks Manny

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff July 26, 2008 05:59 PM

Before the game, in his pregame press session, manager Terry Francona talked about the current situation with Manny Ramirez. Francona said that Ramirez had come to him last night, and told him that he would be able to play today.

"We obviously had some conversations last night," Francona said. "One thing leads to another. We just wanted to talk through some things and make sure we were all on the same page, like we do with everybody. Some of that was last night."

Asked about potential disciplinary action, had Ramirez not played in today's game, Francona said, "I know you won't like the answer. I don't think I'll ever change my stance. When we're talking about disciplinary things I'm not comfortable ever having that be public. I know this is a very public place, what we're doing. But that's, I think, my responsibility is to put our team and our ballclub first. How we handle disciplinary issues has got to remain internal. That's just how I feel about it. That'll never change."

In terms of the communication with Ramirez, Francona said, "This week, you know what, we had some misunderstandings. There's no way getting around that. It doesn't mean he's a bad person. We expect a lot; again, when things don't go right, we try to make them right, so that's about how I feel about it."

Francona also said that he felt like the situation is over, that the team can move on.

  1. chowderheads; get ready to take another long nap (86 years). Good to know that I won't have to look at those ugly shirts in public anymore

  1. Get rid of Manny. I've been a Bosox Fan for the last 70 yrs. and don't ever remember anyone being babied as much as him. I don't care how many runs he bats in. I really believe he took 3 strikes from Rivera on purpose in NY. A Cardinal Sin, against Yankees yet. His utter disregard for the team is inexcusable. He just seems to care only about himself. I don't see the Sox going to the World Series this yr. anyway (with or without Manny). I've had more than enough of "Manny being Manny". Lets get a team player to replace him. Holliday of Colorado would nice, but anyone else will do. And to think fans and newspapers got on Ted Williams when he played.

  1. What an enabling statement by Francona regarding the situation with Manny.
I guess now we all know why Youk nearly came to blows with Manny.
Why don't we see or hear about other consummate professional veteran team leaders like Captain Varitek or Mike Lowell (who the Sox should feel blessed to have after he was shoved down their throats in the trade for Beckett). We all know that the Sox like to keep their issues in house and not air their dirty laundry, but there comes a time when the Red Sox Nation, for all their years of loyalty, would like to know that there is something going on in dealing with the ongoing Manny being Manny saga. Perhaps it is time to put Manny on waivers again?
Also, someone please nudge Mr. Epstein and tell him to take a lesson from Danny Ainge's playbook and be willing to say goodbye to some young players with "promise" for some players who can get the job done NOW as I am tired of listening to announcers second guess Francona's pitching decisions when the reality is that he has very few reliable arms to which he can currently turn.

  1. YOUK 'almost came to blows with Manny'?

Youk let Ramirez slap him upside the head, then shove him into a cooler, and did nothing.

Like he did nothing against Joba.

If you're looking for in-your-face leadership, won't find it in Youk in the intestinal fortitude department.

All you get from him is whining and chirping from the dugout.

    And backing down..
