Bad news for Buchholz?
We’ll be checking in with more information soon, but I wanted to share a quick tidbit from the press conference just held by Theo Epstein and Terry Francona to announce the acquisition of starting pitcher Paul Byrd.
Byrd will most likely pitch on Friday, which was Clay Buchholz’s day to start. So does that mean Buchholz is out of the rotation? Epstein would only say the Sox will have more definitive plans in the next couple of days, and that "by no means are we giving up on Clay Buchholz."

Moving clay to the pen might be the answer
NO, Clay should go to AAA. see ya NEXT Year.
Possible move to the pen for Buchholz? Considering they entertained this possibility prior to the post-season last year I have to think it's a real possibility
i say throw clay into the bullpen and see how it goes. if he still struggles then he needs to go to AAA
AAA......... He'll be back when he has confidence in getting his fast ball over. No walks from bull pen needed.
Buck is a young pitcher & should be Top of the Rotation pitcher in the future. Send him to Pawtucket to work on his pitches & call him up September 1st. Byrd is a stop gap measure for this season only. KEEP THE FAITH BUCK, YOU'LL BE BACK SOON. RED SOX NATION AWAITS YOUR RETURN.
A GREAT TALENT needing only more training/experience. The temporary assignment to Pawtucket should be directed with specific goals in mind:
1. Location of the fast ball.
2. Consistency in location from both the wind-up and the stretch.
3. Keeping the runners close/pick-off move.
4. Control and capacity to remain in command immediately following a base hit, walk, or error. Must eliminate the domino disaster factor which has escalated in recent starts.
God always answers prayers, it's just sometimes the answer is "no," and sometimes it is yes, but not on your terms. I've been praying for them to replace Buchholz in the rotation, but by re-inserting the much more effective Masterson, not by acquiring Paul Byrd. Long term, I see both Buchholz and Masterson as part of an effective Boston rotation; I worry Red Sox management mistakenly sees the latter in the bullpen.
What the staus of Tim Wakefield?
It's a nice pick up. Clay will have his day.
I think its good news for Buch, it takes the pressure off him to perform during the heart of a playoff race and he can improve his stuff...he's young and is entitled to growing pains
I agree that moving Clay to the pen might be the answer...but only if the question is "How can we ruin a guy's confidence, stunt his development, and add a shaky middle-reliever all at the same time?"
what about Colon going to the 'pen for the 7th and 8th inning before Papelbon?
AAA. He will be good when he gets his fast ball in there. Walks from the bull pen, not needed..

Think it's time for him to be "Player to be named later" in the next trade.
Sorry to say I think he's Pawsox bound. He really needs some time to find his stuff.
The kid's confidence is shot. You really want him coming out of the bullpen right now? Send him to Pawtucket and give him a fresh start.
Hey Clay...consider going back to your old, successful arm slot. Work on the "new" one in the offseason!
No need to convert Clay to a bullpen player. Kid has great stuff and all the ups and downs over the past 2 seasons will only make him that much better when his confidence catches up with his stuff......send him back to Pawtucket and let him just pitch.
