Beckett scratched
Josh Beckett has been scratched from his scheduled start on Friday, and the Red Sox ace plans to have his ailing right elbow examined by Dr. James Andrews.
In a postgame interview, manager Terry Francona said Beckett was seeing Andrews as a precaution. There was no indication the tingling sensation he had previously felt in his pitching hand had returned.
"I think the best word I can use is we're just trying to get some closure," Francona said. "We never want to send anyone out there that's not 100 percent. We're no more pessimistic about him today than we were, but when he goes out there [again] we want him to be able to pitch with peace of mind."
General manager Theo Epstein echoed those precautionary sentiments.
"We don't feel comfortable pitching him unless he is 100 percent because we have to take his long term interests and the team's long term interests into account first and foremost," Epstein said.
Epstein also said it was his understanding that the tingling was not still present in Beckett's pitching hand, but that "the elbow itself doesn't feel 100 percent."
"We're pretty optimistic this thing's getting better," Epstein said. "It just makes sense. Josh has a great relationship with Andrews, he's an accomplished doctor. Get another opinion here, hoping he comes back and can take the ball pretty soon."
Daisuke Matsuzaka will take the mound in Beckett's place on Friday night at Fenway Park against the White Sox. The Providence Journal reported that David Pauley would take Dice-K's spot on Saturday.
Beckett had been given the thumbs up to pitch Friday after his side session on Tuesday, but now will be pushed back for the second time in a week. He hasn't pitched since an Aug. 17 start against Toronto in which he gave up 8 runs in 2 1/3 innings.
"I think scary is probably a good word for it," Beckett said earlier this week. "I've had some sleepless nights thinking about all kinds of stuff. You generally think the worst."
Elbow tenderness and an awkward sleeping position may have contributed to the original tingling (which Beckett first reported after the drubbing by the Blue Jays), but no one claims to know the source of the problem.
"We're trying to figure out what's causing it and go from there," Beckett said earlier this week. "Right now it's just day to day and I'm dealing with it. We have a great medical staff. We're trying to be cautious. We're not talking about just the end of a season, but about the end of a career. Some organizations would do anything they could to get a player back out there. I appreciate what they are doing for me here."
Beckett plans to see Andrews on Friday.

There goes the season
The three worst words in sports..."Dr. James Andrews" C ya in 2010 Beckett.
this can only be the worst kind of news.
Ughhhh.....
Why wont francona ever give a straight answer on injuries?
Get Well Soon Josh!
//Why wont francona ever give a straight answer on injuries?//
Because he's not a doctor. He has no idea. I'd rather see caution than someone making pronouncements.
This is the definition of "worst case scenario."
Good Luck Josh! The game doesn't seem that important when you're facing a medical unknown. We're praying for you.
Why wait to now for him to be checked by James Andrews. Obviously something is up, and when theirs tingling and inflammation go to see the best specialist. They waited to long and this doesn't sound good. Well they have a fighting chance still but look for the theo and company to make some big splashed on the off season free agent market. They will make the playoffs without beckett but no way they win it all without him. Hopefully he can be 100% and contribute to their 2009 mega team. They will clear money and then spend the money and then some well
What about Millwood from Texas?
What would that take?
Yeah, that's right....the game is not important, Josh Beckett's health is. Cut the crap. if the Red Sox could replace him with another ace who could throw 98 on the black we would forget him tomorrow. IT:S ALL ABOUT THE GAME, not the individuals. Save your prayers, Pink Hat, Beckett is not inviting you over for Thanksgiving dinner.
so who pitches friday? Colon needs to be getting healthy quickly now.
pro athletes today aren't like they were years ago as most people are aware, they have muti million dollar yearly contracts and don't want to possibly jeopardisetheir careers unless they are 100%healthy.if i told my boss i had a little tingling in my fingers and couldn't work he would probably laugh at me just before he fired me. i don't mean beckett in particular but most in general .can drew always be as hurt as he says and then come back a few days later and act like their is nothing wrong with him thank god for the gutsy players like pedroia. by the way manny was right the red sox don't deserve a player like him noone does GOOD RIDDANCE
He'll be fine. (and don't worry, he'll still be rich too.)
Yeah, that's right....the game is not important, Josh Beckett's health is. Maybe Francona is simply telling the truth. Beckett is an emotional guy, he's talked about how scary the injury is (from a life perspective, not baseball), maybe as it got closer to Friday the guy was just a wreck and needed the peace of mind.
David Pauley should get a shot at starting.
Perfect example of how it will take more than two good years to erase the YEARS of agony being BoSox fan was all about ....
Yeah, he's done, and so are we..
I AM HOPING FOR THE BEST FOR THE TEAM'S SEASON, BUT JOSH'S HEALTH IS THE MAIN ISSUE HERE. JOSH, I HOPE YOU FEEL BETTER SOON AND DON'T TRY TO COME BACK TO PITCHING BEFORE YOU ARE 1001%. ANY TINGLING SENSATION, ESPECIALLY IN THE ARMS AND LEGS, IS A GREAT CAUSE FOR CONCERN AND I AM GLAT THAT TERRY AND THEO ARE NOT ASKING JOSH TO PUT HIS HEALTH ASIDE TO WIN A FEW GAMES. MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU,JOSH.
3 truly frightening words; " Dr.James Andrews" !!! Aaaaaaaggghhh !
The three scariest words in sports "Dr. James Andrews." We have every reason to be worried about Beckett. Elbow injuries in pitchers don't heal quickly. The fact that he had tingling in his hand and they are saying it is because of an elbow injury means that he had a LOT of muscular and swelling issues in there. He is done for the year. Even if he comes back, he won't be as effective. I still believe in the team though. Mostly because I don't believe in anyone else besides the Angels.
Re: comment 14: Is this the same Jim Capozzi that used to play for baseball in Brockton back in the 50's? You are a legend in these parts...
Nothing good ever happens after a visit w/ Dr. Andrews. Beckett's done for the year. But, I've thought for some time now that the Sox are really just pretenders rather than contenders this year anyways, so at least I'm not disappointed.
as Astro would say on the Jetsons..."Ruh-Ro Roerge"
No problem at all. Move Okijima into the rotation and bring back Bucholz. Adios, Beantown!
the 2 scariest words, "tommy john". i hope it's not gonna happen, but i think this is far more serious than they are letting on. sleeping funny isn't going to make nerves tingly for the amount of time it's gone on. and if you look at the quotes from josh ,they've been consistently more negative than the front office. something in the elbow is causing nerve impingement and that's bad bad news. best case is it's a thing like tennis elbow and he'll be back in the spring, worst case all that inflammation is due to a tear in one of the ligaments. hoping for the best, mr. beckett.
Wait, Joba went to see Andrews, and he is slated to start pitching again. I think we need to wait and see on this.
Without Beckett, we aren't going anywhere this year including even making the playoffs. How much adversity can one team take in one season? This is final straw for the hard-luck Sox of '08. What a shame.
He says he is getting better, I think it is just for his peace of mind, he'll be back! They are 20 games over .500 with an average Beckett, let him get healthy, like Lowell and Drew, They will be fine!!!!!
The Sox have totally mismanaged this situation (very uncharacteristic for them). I am a physician and the minute I heard about Beckett's hand numbness I thought nerve injury (particularly with it being intermittent throughout the season). This is not from "sleeping on it wrong;" Beckett has injury to his ulnar nerve at his elbow and will probably need corrective surgery in the offseason. Why he was not sent to a specialist immediately is beyond me. Put Wakefield on the DL for "back pain" but rest Beckett for 4 days with numbness in his hand and have him start throwing on the side on day 5. Moronic.
Injuries are the biggest reason why teams at any level in any sport go bad...Injuries are part of sports....The team with talent and who has the least injuries is successful...Just hope we can hang in there until Lowell & Drew get back....who cares if Lugo ever comes back. Boy did Francona blow one today...Why bring Okijama to face Giambi when Lester was going so well. A win could have really buried the Yanks....
Within 24 hours it went from "great bullpen session" to "Dr James Andrews"..? Um, does anyone else smell BULLSHIT..?
He hasn't been up to par all year and we still are in striking distance. Let him get better and maybe next year .......
I got to guess season over for Josh.
Stuff like this means the knife is on the table.
Ah yes! NOW this board sounds like the real Red Sox Nation...doom, gloom, cynicism and negativity. Was wondering where all the real Sox fans, the one's that sold out the Fens before Mr. Diamond started singing in the 8th, had gone. As I believed in the '70's just as I believe now...one should never expect to win it all. That's the crappy attitude reserved for Yankee fans. So instead, let's root like hell for the guys who aren't expected to win. With JD, Josh and a cast of dozens ailing and a team of ragtag waiver wire guys filling in, let's enjoy the magical seasons of Pedroia and Youk, the hair-pulling frustration that is the seven-hour six-inning start defined by Dice-K and the joy with which these guys compete as if nothing else mattered. After two championships in four years, that's good enough for me given the circumstances. And if they do win? Well, how much sweeter will it be then? In the meantime, I see nothing wrong with wishing Josh well. And enough with the Pink Hat thing. A Sox fan is a Sox fan. You ain't nothing special just cause you rooted for them longer. Championships bring accolades, and that in turn, brings on new fans with their own traditions. Welcome to the world of winning. Deal with it.
last I saw Joba Chamberlain went to see the Grimm Reaper and is going to start next week. So did Kerry"Chandelier" Wood, and he's already back....it's not always season ending you living on the ledge pessimists...get a life and go out every once in while. Your lives may not be as sour..
my medical knowledge (a med student who has worked with hand and upper extremity orthopods visited by local sports stars) leads me to believe that this is not a serious issue (I sure hope it isn't). Beckett no longer has the ulnar nerve tingling (meaning, he is OK to pitch - this is something that can be triggered by something as simple as sleeping with your arm in an awkward position and is usually self resolving).
I think comment 17 got it exactly right:
Beckett's own words make it seem that the incident really made him anxious (talking about sleepless nights and fearing the end of his career) and that he needs the reassurance of another expert opinion. The organization doesn't seem particularly concerned about him and I think that is a good sign. I hope I am right and that he is back in the rotation within a week.
Gone till 2010... Baseball is NOT about one person. Becket or not, Sox need to make play-offs. People panic when one player gets hurt. It's 25 guys, not one.
good news for us yankee fans. he has proven to be one of the bigger Aholes in the game. His fist pumping and screaming on the mound are classless. For some reason he feels it's his responsability to be the Keeper of the game and him and only him will decide what is bush leaque or not. If he decides you might look at a home run too long he will buzz your ear next time up, yet he can pump his fist any time he strikes out a .200 hitter. Classless creep and i hope his arm falls off.
I'm not worried until I see how Beckett pitches the next time out. I'm not necessarity buying the "overly cautious" line that the front office is dishing, but the team is still playing from ahead. The proof of whether this approach is correct will be the pitching line when Beckett returns.
I had the same thing in my left had a number of years ago, the doctor x-rayed my elbow and found a bone spur pinching the nerves, which caused the numbness. If that is the case he'll be done for the season as they will have to cut into the elbow to remove the spur and then stitch it up. He'll be in a sling for a couple of weeks and then re-hab to break down the scar tissue just to get a range of motion back.
I'll be a battle between the Sox and Stankees as to who gets Sabathia.
Beckett hasn't pitched like Beckett all season.
I sincerely hope Josh's health improves to the point where he can pitch again soon. At this stage of the season, the most important issue is to have as many healthy players available to carry the Sox into the playoffs (and beyond)
I like popsicles
It's not time to panic.
You guys flying off the handle are saying he's done for the year.
Sounds like he has an ulnar nerve problem, and while that doesn't come back quickly to full health, you are fully functional (except for loss of feel in the pinky and ring) AND you don't run the risk of aggravating the nerve.
It's located in your elbow. If you've ever leaned on your elbow for too long a time and pinched that nerve, you'll feel what Beckett is feeling. And once you've pinched it, it could take 6 months to get all the feeling back. But you're fully functionally. I'm a musician and have had it, and I need my fingers to play, so... the question is, how much does touch in the ring finger affect his pitches. He'll be ready as soon as he makes sure it's just the ulnar nerve.
What about Mike Hampton in ATL? He's a free agent next year, the Braves are toast and he's actually piching well (first time healthy in 3 yrs) . Theo and Frank Wren already cut a deal earlier in the week.
Becket, given the symptoms, probably has a nerve impingment in his elbow or I believe the doctors should also have looked at his neck as the cervical area could cause the symptoms. It's especially telling that the problem was in the fingers they originally disclosed as tingling.
It could be more than that of course, but it might not be the typical Andrew's visit.
Good luck Josh. We will be thinking of you. We need you desparately in September. If Dr. Andrews has bad news and combined with our lousy bullpen, postseason play looks doubtful at this point.
Come on people – whatever happened to having FAITH? Aren’t we called the “Fenway Faithful?” Anyone see the movie “Faith Rewarded?” Anyone remember the 2004 ALCS? Don’t give up on these guys – have FAITH in them. They won’t let us down.
To everyone who bought the "I slept on my arm wrong" excuse followed by the "My elbow's inflammed after ten minutes of pitching" and then the "I threw 50 picthes and feel fine" without hearing one f-bomb from Josh Beckett -- I have a bridge in London to sell you.
The Sox have known for two weeks that it's more serious than they've been letting on. Why are they just taking care of this now instead of screwing around?
The Sox can still go deep into the post season. Lester and Dice K are pitching extremely well, and the combination of Byrd/Wakefield/Colon should contribute a few post season wins. The Sox have been averaging 6 runs a game in August and their offense should get even better with Lowell comes off the DL.
Beckett has been a monster in the post season, but it's time for Dice-K and Lester to step up.
I moved to florida about a year ago . With Josh Beckett out of the starting rotation The Devil rays with Jackson, Garza and Kazmir which I watched last night and are quite team, The Sox chances get much similar. You never though, that is why they play the games right.
No matter how the Sox try to spin this, it's can't be good news. Based on last season, there was no reason to believe Beckett wouldn't be the same or better this year - and that's not been the case. I believe he's been pitching with some sort of problem all season long, and it's just gotten to the point where he can no longer continue.
My Prediction: Career over. Josh Beckett....not such a tough guy after all.
Regardless of what happens to Beckett, I know I speak for a lot of the enlightened minds who post on these boards when I say this: It's Francona's fault that Beckett's arm hurts. Francona should've known ahead of time that Josh was going to have a Tender elbow. But since Francona can't predict the future, Beckett ends up in Alabama with Dr. Andrews. Just one more reason to fire Francona. (Note: Some people probably think I'm being serious, so I have to add that I'm not.)
This is not the first time that the Sox had some adversity regarding injuries to one of their best players. I fully expect them to fight to the end and get the Wild Card, maybe even the division. but repeating as AL and World Series champs will be a tall order w/o Beckett. He's a gamer in October to say the least. Maybe it will be something that just requires 2 weeks on the DL (I pray) and he comes back to carry the rotation into the playoffs.
how do you say tommy john
What is worse than the name Dr. Andrews? Tommy John....tingling in the finger tips is the first sign of need the sugery.
I am not sure they are "pretenders" when they have the 3rd best record in the league....
Dan Shaughnessy wrote this: He also said the tingling in his fingers "is something I've battled for a while." and I have also seen it in other articles in the last couple of days.
What exactly does that mean Josh??? Is it something you have been battling all season, a few months, or just since August 17th??? The Red Sox and the fans deserve to know the truth to this statement.
Someone needs to be asking questions about this statement. It seems as though it was said by Beckett and then no one has followed up with the tough questions.
We need to get to the bottom of this!
Can you say TOMMY JOHN? See you in 2010 Josh.
Every day with Ellsbury fading and Beckett going down makes that possible Johan trade look better and better.
Jim Capozzi,
Get OVER the Manny thing already. He's been gone a month. What's the matter with you anyway? I don't care if you are "that" Jim Capozzi...whoever the hell that is.
