More Manny thoughts from Edes

Posted by Steve Silva, Boston.com Staff August 4, 2008 11:20 AM

In Saturday's Boston Globe, Gordon Edes reported that Manny Ramirez lobbied to remain in Boston after learning he had been traded to the Dodgers. Manny's agent, Scott Boras, denied the report.

In an interview today on Boston sports radio station WEEI, Edes -- who now writes for Yahoo! sports -- stood by the report.

"I heard it through three different sources who had direct knowledge of the negotiations," Edes said. "... we're talking about Manny, so whether or not he actually had a change of heart I can't really speak to that but the reality is, and I'm surprised that Scott [Boras] denied it as adamantly as he did, but the reality is they had a conversation, Scott and Theo Epstein, within an hour after the trade was made official, saying 'look, if you drop the options, Manny will stay and give full effort,' and Theo basically said that train has left the station men, pack plenty of sun screen, you're on your way to LA. To me, was it surprising? No, because we've seen Manny flip-flop so many times on whether he wanted to be here or not. I think in the end, he may have said, 'jeeze, this is a lot of uprooting of my family and everything for just two months.

"From what I'm told from people close to Manny and his family, his wife Juliana was very happy in Boston. There's a very active Brazilian community in Boston. She had a wide circle of friends and all, and I would have been interested to be a fly on the wall in the conversation in the Ramirez household when that news came down that they were going to LA..."

Was Manny misbehaving on purpose?

"That's certainly the way the Red Sox interpreted it," Edes said. "[The post-trade phone call] was almost an 'ah-ha' moment for them; they said, 'see?' And for people wondering why would Scott call after the trade was done, well, as you know, the Red Sox went almost 24 hours before officially announcing the deal ... I don't know if Scott thought there was a window there where the whole thing could have gone away in the first hour, but to me there is a tacit admission there. Maybe there wasn't any subtlety to it at all, 'yeah, I'm acting out because you guys aren't dropping this option.'

"To find out -- and Jason Varitek, although he said he didn't personally witness it, he was aware of it -- that Manny wasn't going to get on the bus to take the team to the airport to go to Seattle and then comes up with a knee injury in Seattle, that tells you pretty much what you need to know."

Edes also commented on reports that Red Sox owner John Henry wanted to keep Manny in Boston. "It's absolutely true," Edes said. "The one part that there hasn't been any whispers about was that Theo was willing to construct a Red Sox future without Manny Ramirez for years. He put him on irrevocable waivers in 2003, that's all you need to know, and think about how many times they've explored trades. And yes, John Henry has been the loudest voice and certainly the most influential voice in keeping Manny in a Red Sox uniform. And when they met last Wednesday, all the brass met, and Theo, and the baseball ops people, Terry Francona may have been in the meeting as well, John Henry was still resisting the idea of trading Manny and I suppose you could look at this as testament in the kind of autonomy and authority that Theo Epstein now has."

  1. Not surprising Manny didn't feel comfortable in Boston when the idiot GM tried for 5 years to get rid of their best hitter since Ted Williams. Epstein needs to be sent to get more authority with some other team.

  1. What can I say - good job Theo!
This season a lot of young guys are infused into the team, and the last thing they need in their development is to have Manny as an example.

I, for one, will be perfectly happy if they don't win it all "now" for the sake of having a solid, cohesive and consistent team for a long run.

Next time somebody acts up Manny-style, send him to Bill Belichick's training camp: he knows how to deal with this stuff.

  1. Good riddance to an emotional cripple pretending he is the emperor. Boras is complicit in this. Varitek must feel like shit having the same agent.

By the way...I think Jason Varitek needs glasses for batting. I've seen him squint and widen his eyes when he is as bat much like I need to do. I need to do that to get both eyes in focus on the pitcher. Remember when Jim Rice needed glasses? I'll bet Varitek needs them and his batting is suffering because he can't see well enough to hit the ball

  1. Did Manny suddenly realize he's got as much chance of making $20 million plus next year as I do starting in place of Bucholz tonight?
Management bent over backwards for him for 8 years, culminating in a last minute deal that cost us two decent prospects. His reaction was to wait until after the deal was signed off at MLB HQ to say he was only then willing to do what he was being paid to do all along.

No wonder Boras denies this took place, It makes his client, and by extension himself, look like a moron for trying to back out of a deal an hour after it was processed at the league office and was all over the media.

Enjoy that $6-8 million you get next year, Manny. You'll have earned it.

  1. Here is the difference between Bay and Ramirez...
    Bay HAS character
    Ramirez IS a character
I'll take a team loaded with players who have character over a team with a bunch of characters anytime.

  1. At this point I find it hard to believe all the crap coming out in the Globe or the Herald. Thee man's gone and still they crucify him. You idiots got what you wanted. Manny's gone. I for one think it's an awful move for the Red Sox. But whether it is or isn't, the man's gone. Get over it and find someone new to harass. I wonder who will be next. Tito for leaving a pitcher in too long. Theo for making the trade if the team plays poorly. Youk for having hissy fits in the dugout out when he strikes out. Nobody's safe. The Red Sox won three games against a much inferior team. Big deal. We'll see how this all plays out. But never mind all that. Just leave Manny be you heartless hacks. By the way, I am a business owner with employees. When a decision comes right down to it, I will listen to everything they have to say then make my own decision. John Henry should have done so as well. And futhermore, Epstein did make it clear he had been trying to get rid of Manny to those other idiots at Fox the day of one of the Yankees games. It was only after that that Manny made any comments to the press he understandably hated. Let's get all our facts right shall we?

  1. Guys, i have been saying this quite a while.Manny/Ortiz combo have been bailing out Theo from his blunder trades. They made the line up above average and hid Theo's trade flaws. Now he broke that combo up and now he has no one to bail him out. Let us see how all works out. Nation is rejoicing with 3 game winning streak. Let us not forget it was A's that we played and beat.

  1. Why people bash Theo is kind of bizarre. People are too emotionally invested in the past. Manny is a 300-25-100 hitter. He is not going to get $100 million for 4 years. He'll be lucky to get $10 milion for one year. Manny will never drive in 160, bang out 45, or hit 330 again. He's as good as about 50 other players.

To all you Theo bashers out there. Are you upset he didn't sign Shelling for $30 over 2 years? What about Pedro ond Nomar? Are you still upset we don't get to see them play quarter seasons in a Sox uniform turning in average perfomances on the rare occassions they do play?

  1. Instead of The focous being on Manny and Bay , we should more concerned about our bullpen and our Shortstop . Yes , Manny is great , but let's keep everything grounded . I never understood why he wanted to leave so bad , there's no dedication with Manny without money . Though $20 million a year is a bunch of money , to Manny it's cump change . His legacey is awesome in Boston, but there's a lesson to be learned out of this , being selfish and quitting on your teammates will not be tolerated . Everythings new to Manny right now in LA , but as with Lowe and Nomar and Pedro there production has declined . Only the future in which we can't predict will tell us all. Thanks for 2 world championships Manny , hopefully you will find common ground within yourself not to quit on your new team if they don't offer you A-rod money at the end of this year.

  1. I am I wrong or did Manny have a signed CONTRACT for this year at $20 mil????? I am sure as a business owner (Eva), you have plenty of people that work for you that come to work and decide if they are going to put forth effort or not and you keep them when they decide to goof off until you give into them. If you hire people like that, i am sure you have a very successful (NOT!) business.
By the way, Manny's knee must have gotten a lot better with the 6 hr flight to LA huh? Theo protected the TEAM, the manager and the owner's investment and always has. Boras almost fell over back-pedaling from his latest fiasco (see A-Rod during the WS). Pedro? Nomar? Lowe? I havent seen them in the WS since they left. I am sure all of them would like to redo their exits from Boston.

  1. "MAN-HAM" deserved to be suspended, not simply traded. The only thing one can reasonably fault the Sox for here is enabling knit-wit Man-Ham to act out with impunity for so long that the situation got to the level that it eventually did. I can't wait to see what moron pays what Scott Boras will be asking for his newest client. It's win-win for Sox Nation: either Boras/Man-Ham gets their come-uptance or we can enjoy more stories about one of the most talented yet selfish players ever to come down the Mass Pike, only this time thankfully on another team.

  1. Scott Boras is a deceitful piece of Lawyer. He should be investigated by MLB authoroties and if there is a smell of improprioty banned from baseball. This smells of the likes of Alan Eagleson's side deals for HIS COMMISSION PAYCHECK that robbed Boston of number 4. Hey Theo, take a page out of Hank from the Yankees. Refuse to do business with Scott BorASS until the player gets someone honorable to negotiate.

  1. So John Henry resisted the trade to the very end, huh?

    Not surprising. .

Brilliant businessman that he is, he knows better than anyone what Ramirez is worth in overall sales, buzz, tickets, merchandise, revenues...and the riches that stem from the championships that are always possible to accrue off his bat.

Frank McCourt is getting a good sense of that right now, too.

  1. Had I been Theo, Manny would have been gone one minute after he abused the Traveling Secretary. No responsible manager of any kind can allow any employee to abuse another employee. I believe Theo and Tito both wanted Manny to be gone after that incident and it just took some time to get it done. Poison in the clubhouse will kill the entire team. Good riddance Manny.

  1. Is Gordon Edes now writing only for Yahoo Sports ? Is he finished writing for the Globe? I noticed he stopped doing his mailbag in which he published my letters 2 or 3 times as Dave Braveraven..I don't always agree with what he says but he's a good writer, but I see no sane reason he would lie about this, especially citing three sources that Scott Boras called back to void the already done deal and keep Manny in Boston. Anyone know if Edes is no longer writing at the Globe?

    love Dave Braveraven aka EightInARow

  1. I have absolutely no interest in watching Theo's baseball brand of Stepford Wives play. (Has anyone besides me noticed how much Bay looks like JD Drew?)

Thanks for nothing Theo. Now you can use that $20 million Manny made to get another one of your great free-agent acquisitions like Lugo, Renteria....

  1. That would be 3 RED SOX front office sources for Mr. Edes. He doesn't write anything without the front office telling him what to write. That doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that. The only people talking who were close to the negotiations were with the RED SOX! during the negotiations! They have been getting their side of this out for two weeks now. They also did it in 2006 when they almost traded him but couldn't get back what they wanted. They continue their policy of trashing their ex-stars as they boot them out of town.

THEO DID WHAT HE HAD TO DO. EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT WE HAVE LOST, BUT IF HE IS NOT GOING TO PLAY UP TO HIS ABILITY IT WILL REFLECT ALL THE WAY DOWN THE LINE FROM THE VETERANS TO THE ROOKIES.
MANNY IS BY FAR THE BEST PURE HITTER IN BASEBALL, BUT IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO THE ALMIGHY DOLLAR. HE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A MINIMUM OF 140 MILLION FOR 7 YEARS AND THAT JUST WASNT ENOUGH. TIME TO WISH HIM WELL AND MOVE ON,BUT IT IS TOTALLY WRONG TO TRY AND PUT YHE BLAME ON THEO.

You would think that would want to come forward and take all the praise for bashing on a guy who's already left town. No wonder people across the country hate Red Sox fans even more than Yankee fans. 1. Hey Edes, a post-trade phone call from Boras makes no sense when you consider that if Manny really wanted out of the trade, why didn't he simply reject it as he had the right to do as a 10-5 player?

  1. Manny Ramirez created a major disturbance for the Red Sox in his successful attempt to be let go by the team. And the way in which he did it was, as one unidentified Red Sox player described it, “despicable”. His low brow act consisted of things like refusing to play in big games by faking injuries, making an honest attempt at playing hard only when it suited him, and surrendering at bats like the 3 pitch strikeout in NY against Mariano Rivera where Manny clearly had no intention of even lifting the bat off his shoulder (because Tito had the nerve to send him up to pinch hit on his day off). And now in LA Manny seems to have had a miraculous recovery from his leg and knee injuries. Why are the Red Sox allowing Ramirez to get away with this? He may act like he is 12 years old but he is old enough to be held legally responsible for his actions. My guess is that the city of Boston and the majority of Red Sox players (and fans) would applaud the Red Sox bringing a breach of contract suit against Manny. He shouldn’t be allowed to get away with it without being challenged, no one else in the business world would.

  1. "MAN-HAM" -- I love it Winthrop Rambler! I'll thank Manny for helping Red Sox Nation enjoy two world series titles in 3 years, but it was long past time for his act to move on. No better place than "La-La" land for "MAN-HAM" --> (That is just TOO FUNNY!) :-)

  1. Great post Martin. You are right...Get rid of Theo. What has Theo really done? The nerve of Theo wanting Manny to play hard. Unreal. Theo is a bum and Manny is a hero to all (tongue planted firmly in cheek) Grow up Martin. The world is passing you by, time to become an adult.

Miss the bat and swagger don't miss the idiot savant behavior.

  1. I just don't see how anyone who calls themselves a Red Sox fan can lament the fact that Theo has culled yet another cancer from this team. Even though I hear that Ortiz "abstained" from voting for trading Manny in a so-called team meeting shortly before the trade deadline, it is clear that he has not dissagreed with the call. I'm glad to see Big Papi warming up to Jason Bay as Bay seems like a very talented player who will give his all for the team. Manny, for the last time from me, thanks for your contributions to the Sox winning 2 World Series, but good riddance and good luck in LA, where I seriously doubt that you will re-sign after the season. You and agent Scott Boras deserve each other as you seem to like the word "deserve". I do believe that we have found the answer at SS with "A man named Jed", who seems to be really settling in at the job. Goodbye Julio!!!

  1. Is anyone really surprised?? We all knew that Boras doesn't get paid if the Sox re-up on Manny. The only way Boras gets paid is if Manny signs a new deal.
Boras does not work for free.
Manny dogged it here the last two weeks & the Sox couldn't be sure if he would pack it in for the rest of the season. What would have been the consequences??? Either the Sox would pick up the $20 mil option or he'd be a free agent.
Yes, the Dodgers got a sweet deal, Manny for 2 months for zero dollars, but that's what it took for the Sox to rid themselves of this monumental headache.
Don't get me wrong, I loved Manny, when he played hard. But he lost his teammates, and after that, he had to go.
I say Good for Theo. The man has balls.

  1. I am sorry that Manny wanted out of Boston, and both happy and sad to see the Red Sox granted his wish and had to give up so much (Hansen, Moss and $7M). I wonder how much of it was Scott Boras putting ideas in Manny's head - throwing gasoline on the fire so to say. Ultimately Manny is responsible for his own actions, and I am pretty pissed about some of his behavior (the run in with the Red Sox Travel guy, the feigned injuries, playing some games at half speed or half heartedly, etc). I hate to see his bat leave the line up and his personality and looseness leave the dugout, but as he became a distraction and emotional problem for the team, it was apparent something was going to happen. Now you have Manny wearing Dodger blue and Scott Boras ready to get him 4 years for $100M - almost certainly Manny will be wearing Yankee pinstripes in 2009.

  1. Manny worried about the cost of airfare he will now have to spend to fly out his favorite B-town strippers across country. Its wasn't so bad flying them in and out of Baltimore. That's why he tried to back out of the deal. Perhaps he will find girls that talk as much as they do here. Perhaps its just all part of destiny.

  1. Manny Rambrain made 400,000 dollars per week, played when he felt like it, never visited kids at the Jimmy Fund functions and told all of our war heros to stuff it by not giving thanks to them so he could play baseball in America safely. Manny is and forever will be a great hitter a liability in the outfield and as far as a person he is so far down on the food chain he just does not matter. Boston showed him nothing but love and kindness and to pay us back he wants to join the yankees and take down Red Sox nation. Manny shame on you , to hell with baseball and the hell with money , Manny someday you will wake up but for someone so self centered it will probably take a personal tragedy to make you realize how blessed you were.We will not miss you and thats the saddest legacy of all.
