ESPN socks it to Boston

(Adweek Photo)
The blog Stuff That Is Relevant this morning sent us this tip about an ESPN guerrilla marketing campaign centered around the Red Sox trading Manny Ramirez to the Dodgers.
According to Adfreak.com, ESPN ad agency Ground Zero quickly sprang into action after Manny was traded to the Dodgers last Thursday, and by lunchtime Friday, “nearly every laundromat in Los Angeles county had at least one ‘Lost Red Sock.’ ”
So when is the Jason Bay promotion in Boston kicking off?

Even more proof that ESPN has it out for Boston...never even printed a retraction after Tomase's article was proven false.
Who are you kidding? Do you really think that those signs that were all over Fenway for Bay's very first day came from the fans? I am sure the front office sign shop was working overtime! Jed Lowrie was the "hero" but it was Bay that got the interview after the game. It is no question that watching him play has been fun so far but the Jason Bay promotion machine is at full throttle!
So, it should shock Boston fans that ESPN would knock Boston?
Please - Boston has held 'persona non grata' status at ESPN for years.
espn can screw itself
Who cares what LA or ESPN does? Really. ESPN spent half their time saying bad things about Manny, and otherwise making a joke out of him. Now he gets traded to LA and let's start the hype machine.
And LA goes out and pays Andruw Jones a ton of money, Joe Torre a ton of money, and then thinks that the following combination of baseball players in the locker room is a good idea:
Jeff Kent
Nomar Garciaparra
Manny Ramirez
Why don't you just throw in Milton Bradley and Barry Bonds and get it over with?
So honestly, who cares about LA or Manny or ESPN?
What I want is some freaking relief to get to Paplebon. That's what I'm concerned with. And it would be nice if Buccholz could have one outing where he doesn't get laser bombed.
I guess we don't need gimmicky guerilla ad campaigns to get interested in our team.
typical espn...
i'm happy for manny, and i'm truly sad that we've lost him, but sometimes things have to fall apart so that they can come back together....
maybe he'll come back to boston someday (when we've got rid of our loser gm theo, and that freak dan shaungessy) but until then we've got to move on, no matter how hard it's going to be
The sock has been swept out with the tide in the Bay. It was pretty dirty, anyway, and when Boston wore it, it had too many holes.
ESPN stinks. Regardless of who this is a cheap shot against, it is lame and cheesy, yet typical. ESPN has become the dorky guy at work who quotes Borat all the time. They beat stories to death, have inaccurate reporting and play far too much poker and X games for anyone to care anymore.
Were the socks frayed, worn out and have holes in them?
Pretty silly.
Why don't they pop a few aspirin in the socks to represent all the headaches also now lost to Boston?
And while they're at it, throw in a few rings as well.
Championships came with that crazy package as well.
Boston doesn't need to promote Jason Bay. I believe his actions spoke louder than Manny's words this weekend. In any case, well wishes to Manny and welcome Jason Bay.
Yet another reason to hate these idiots. First, they can't report sports news impartially at ALL, and then they have to wade into the Manny thing. Anything for ratings. Personally, if I had ANY respect for them left at all, it's gone now.
Pirates on Massachusetts Bay?
Um, but we really don't have any animosity towards the Pirates or even Pittsburgh.
Nope. It won't work.
How about we just give the guy an ovation and actually stick around to the 12th inning to congradulate him for scoring the winning run. LA would never think of that.
Manny is an exceptional baseball player, however it came to a time when his attitude and antics were unfavorably effecting the team. He crossed the line on several occasions and the time came when it was time to move on. Manny will do well in the LA enviornment and they will enjoy a "honeymoon" TILL things don't go Manny's way. We find ourselves with Jason Bay and Red Sox fans are enjoying "our honeymoon"---and we hope it lasts for a long-long time. So far-So good. Good Luck Jason, you are a professional, well spoken, athlete who is proving to be an asset to the team.
ESPN is gay and I refused to watch it before they decided to have love fest with Manny. Boras must have them in his pocket just like everyone else. Typical ESPN bs.
I watched the LA/ Arizona games and saw a different Manny who ran down the line at good speed, actually drove the ball to right field instead of just hitting it there,
swung at pitches on the outside corner rather than accepting the third strike.
New Manny or is he consentrating on next year's contract ? He never was a team
player.
Yeah, a great game for a player who's plagued by a knee problem. It pretty much tells you how he sabotaged his team.
Please. Can you stop writing about Manny every day? Like we have separation anxiety or something. Frankly, I don't care. He's not a Sox any more. I don't care what he does or doesn't. He's not our problem.
Comments should be restricted to players who give full and honest effort, not quit over money.
The Extreme Sports and Poker Network strikes again!
We didn't lose a sock. It got old and we threw it away.
Bluesboy,
Back away from the ledge, homey. Seriously. Manny was a freak who needed to be shown the door. Are you kidding me? Who the f wants a player who only plays hard when he wants to?? I guess the answer to that question is 'the Dodgers'. Good riddance.
As for dissing Theo - again, are you serious? 2 championships in 4 years isn't good enough for a Red Sox fan nowadays?? I think you've got to be 'Nomar the Nitwit' in disguise to be writing such stupid trash.
Celtic
The idea that ESPN is anti-Boston is stupid. They love the Boston teams because the drama equals ratings.
Loosen up, Hub fans. The lost sock is clever and funny.
