Initial Manny comments

Posted by Gary Dzen, Boston.com Staff August 1, 2008 07:10 PM

Former Red Sox left fielder Manny Ramirez was introduced to the Los Angeles media moments ago. Here are a few quotes from Ramirez from the telecast of his Dodgers press conference. The Globe's Dan Shaughnessy is in Los Angeles and will have much more on Manny shortly.

  • "Boston is in the past. Every time people ask me about Boston, I put my brain on pause."

  • On reports that veteran Red Sox players voted to trade Ramirez:

"I’m not going to waste any energy when people talk like that. I want people to judge me on what I do here, not what I did in Boston."

  • "I want to say something from the bottom of my heart. I want to thank all the fans in Boston. I love you guys. You guys have been with me through all the ups and downs."

  1. I was once a huge red sox fan up until they traded the best player who has ever played baseball. I want too let everyone know in L.A they got an unbelievable player who plays his heart out everyday. Boston gave up the best, most talented player that could of ever played in a red sox uniform. Congrats Dodgers... I hope to see the dodgers & red sox play eachother in the world series :) we love you manny, you'll sure be missed by many but never forgotten. Goodluck in L.A

    Are you serious?

  1. Toni...you are an idiot and, obviously, have no perspective on baseball history. Ever hear of Ted Williams and Yaz? And, that is just on the Red Sox. Manny has dropped out of the Top 20 in MLB. His stats are dropping every year and he is well beyond his prime. Regardless of the fact that he can no longer produce as he did 2+ years ago, he is an absolute cancer. He is the last person that I would want to present to my sons and baseball players to idolize.

  1. Toni,

Are you a Yankees fan? Because seriously, "an unbelievable player who plays his heart out everyday." I'll give you a great player, but plays his heart out EVERYDAY??? Maybe everyday he feels like it works best for him. Did you know he got an additional $1 million to for relocation ....Now that is what motivates Manny $$ just like all the sour former players that now talking to the media about leaving Boston. Joh$ny D$mon and No$ar to say the least! Manny, thank you for the times you did show up because you were great and 1st Ballet Hall of Fame worthy, for all the drama you created over the last several years...ADIOS AMIGO!

  1. Shaughnessy already has nothing else to write about now that he's finally gotten what he wanted so he has to go to LA to hound and write about Manny. Pathetic.

  1. "plays his heart out everyday" ???WHAT??? Are you serious, if he played his heart out every single day then the man would be a corpse 'cause he has no heart!!!

  1. The most talented player to play in a red sox uniform was Yaz. He could hit and play left field. He never fell on top of a ball like a fish out of water. He gave 100% every day. He ran out ground balls but then again so do little leaguers. Manny is one of the greatest hitters but the most talented to play in a red sox uniform? Come on buddy...open your eyes!

  1. Toni, Toni, Toni...."player who plays his heart out everyday"? ?????? Give me a break...that is why we traded him...he was a cancer in the clubhouse...one of best cancers to ever swing the bat...but adios Manny...you disrespected the game, the team, and yourself...and "the best, most talented player that could ever played in a red sox uniform"???? Do us all a favor and research a player named Ted Williams...United States Marine...fought in two wars....Red Sox from 1939-1960...and batted .406 in 1941...clean it up Toni!

  1. Toni, you're retarded.

  1. the only babies I see are fans who take what ball players do and say personally. Give me a break! Manny is one of the best hitters in baseball. So he's a bit eccentric and played hardball to do what was best for him. Sox mgt flailed on this deal. Gave up too much and got too little in return based on an emotional knee jerk reaction. Plain and simple. If they had Manny stay and flat out told him no option next year, Manny would've turned over a new leaf real quick and started playing for a 4yr deal. We would have seen a whole new Manny. Instead we lose two quality players and get an almost as good to replace Manny. Theo dropped the ball folks.

  1. Look, there's no doubt this guy is a great ball player, but the "best player who has ever played baseball"? Come on guy. He's an average outfielder at best, with a great stick. Problem is, he thinks he's above the redsox, the game of baseball and everyone else. Shut up and play ball. I think the organization put up with a lot more than most teams would have. I'll even go out on a limb to say that the Yankees wouldn't even put up with his antics. It reminds me of the T. Owens/Eagles relationship, the only difference is we won the world series. Boston can still be succesful without him. Good luck to him, but better luck to the Sox!

  1. i am a huge sox fan, living in Australia now. Toni... "played his heart out every day" have you ever seen a sox game??? never runs out ground balls, lazy and dumb in the outfield.. but yes.. one of the best hitters in baseball. the sad thing with manny is he was too dumb to apply himself and have the discipline of a Mike Lowell and even A-rod or Jeter. So he will be remembered as never really reaching his potential.....

he truly is LA's problem now.... and next year he will be the Yankees problem...

  1. Manny is undoubtedly a first class hitter, uniquely Manny... However, Baseball is a team sport and is steeped in tradition. That tradition is, today, being carried on by players who are mindful, respectful, and grateful for all that is American Baseball. Manny's ego grew as large as his paycheck (and now bigger) and he transitioned from a professional baseball idol, to a selfish individual who plays professional baseball.

  1. Thanks Manny - that means a lot. Hope your knee disability improves, wouldn't that be funny if the dry air in Los Angeles miraculously cures your problem !! Hope the Dodgers don't have any mean travel secretaries either, if they do, you'll know what to do !! Same goes for Joe Torre, and don't let him disrespect you like the Sox owners. Remind him you are one bad man if he tries to bench you. And if you are benched, you're sure to get picked up for an acting job by Hollywood -- your experience in Boston this summer was deserving of an Oscar.

  1. Yo Toni....looks like you really know nothing about baseball, even my girlfriend who is a casual (at best) red sox fan could see that he wasn't as u said "playing his heart out". Why don't you get a clue and try to learn about a little about baseball and playing the game before you call Manny the "best most, talented player that could have ever played in a red sox uniform" Just out of curiosity have you ever heard of a guy named Ted Williams??? What about Yaz....wasn't he the last guy to win the Triple Crown (insert sarcasm here)?? Sure we will never forget Manny and what he did for the team, but we will also never forget all the BS that he put the front office and his teammates through. Either you are some loser that likes to flame people or u trully know nothing about baseball....get a clue!!

  1. Manny is arguably one of the best right handed hitters the game has ever seen. That being said, his unwillingness to play at times and give 100% effort ALL of the time shows Manny's true colors. Imagine the numbers that Manny could have put up if he would actually push himself to be the best he could be. I, for one, will not miss Manny laughing and fooling around after he makes an embarassing play in the field, a ridiculous blunder on the bases or an out in a crucial situation. Manny, although entertaining at times, should realize that Red Sox managment cut him more slack than any employer ever would in the real world. Its a good thing that Manny plays baseball because if he had a real job, he would have been fired every year for the last 8 years. Adios Manuel......don't pull your hamstring trying to prove your worth in LA.

  1. Plays his heart out every day? Manny is a great hitter, yes. Sometimes Manny makes some gret plays in left field. If you call taking almost 6 seconds to get to first base on a ground ball playing his heart out you should re-evaluate your standards. I'm sad to see his bat go but so happy that his bad attitude is Joe Torre's problem now. He's used to dealing with huge egos and I'm sure Manny will fit right into the L.A. lifestyle.

  1. Sure will miss his bat...but not much more. I had unconditional love for him in that Sox uniform, but now that he's gone, I can honestly say he's quite a dooosh.

  1. toni, Take the blinders off! He was a great hitter but not not even in the top 10 oribably 25 players to have ever played. He played hard every day? Why did he quit on his teammates in 06? Or beg out of the last game of the Seattle series and the first against the Yankees? That's your idea of playing hard every day? Thanks Manny for the 2 WS titles but now move on. I'm sure that knee is fine now that you cried and got your way by getting LA to agree not to pick up those options. If somebody gives this guy more money and/or more years they're crazy!

  1. when you get the bad news, you have cancer, you take a deep breath, say a prayer, then tell the doc to cut it out, remove it, and then get on living. congrats to the red sox they did the right thing withthis mutation.

  1. A true team player wouldn't have let his contract status impact his team like the blooper of 7/19. We're better off without the drama. Welcome to boson Jason Bay.

  1. So Toni, you were a Red Sox fan until they traded Babe Ruth??

"It's hard to beat someone who never gives up." --Babe Ruth

"The game isn't over until it's over." --Yogi Berra

"I'd walk through hell in a gasoline suit to play baseball." --Pete Rose

"It doesn't happen, so who cares? There's always next year. It's not like it's the end of the world." --Manny Ramirez.
