Manny and Joe's 'Dreadlock Deadlock' continues
In what Newsday is calling the "Dreadlock Deadlock," it appears that Manny Ramirez is in no hurry to follow through on Dodgers manager Joe Torre's 11-day-old request to trim back his middle-of-his-back hanging hair. Wallace Matthews of Newsday updates today:
![]() (Max Morse/Getty Images) |
Both [Manny Ramirez and Joe Torre] agree that something will be done. What they can't seem to agree on is what will be done, when or by whom."We'll see," Manny said in the Dodgers' clubhouse before Monday night's game against the Phillies when asked if he was going to cut his hair. "We're talking about it."
"I'm not negotiating anything," Torre said, not laughing, when the conversation was recounted to him a few minutes later in the Dodgers' dugout. "He'll do it. He told me he'll do it. When he first got here, I asked him, 'How important is the hair to you?' And he asked me, 'Do you want me to cut it?' So I said, 'I want you to clean it up a little."'
And therein lies the rub.
The issue of Manny's hair was first raised on Aug. 1, when the former Sox left fielder landed in Los Angeles and Torre requested that he trim his hair back. As of last night, Ramirez still had not taken any length off his long locks. More from Newsday:
"We're going to talk again later," Torre said yesterday. And yet the manager was adamant when asked if maybe Ramirez was using his distinctive hairdo -- which last night was adorned with a single green, yellow and red Rastafarian dread right in the middle -- to test the new manager's authority by continuing to stonewall the request."No, he isn't," Torre said. "He is not. I didn't tell him he had to do it by a certain date. He acknowledged he's gonna do something and I believe he will do it." ...
Torre acknowledges he has no idea what that something might be. "What am I going to do, tell him if you don't do this, Santa Claus isn't coming? Try to make that one stick."
According to T.J. Simers in today's LA Times, a deal has already been reached to cut Manny's hair this week:
A deal has apparently been struck, though, with Fantastic Sam's, Ramirez getting it cut sometime this week and a Dodgers charity benefiting.Hair today, and maybe gone tomorrow, and it's all anyone wants to talk about.
"You see what you started?" Ramirez joked. "Now Orel Hershiser wants to talk to me about my hair."
It was the return to Dodger Stadium for Ramirez, a week after electrifying the place.
Fans arriving at the stadium eager to be a part of Manny Mania, though, were surprised to learn the dreadlock bandannas they had heard about had not arrived yet.
At each concession stand the answer was the same from the salesperson: "Everyone wants them."
A Dodgers spokesman said, "They probably won't be here until the weekend."
Simers also has Manny commenting on the controversial fine he received from the Red Sox for shoving traveling secretary Jack McCormick back in June.
Ramirez stopped by to say he had been fined $40,000 for "that incident," the one where he had pushed the Red Sox traveling secretary a few months back. When a player is fined, the money is donated to charity, and Ramirez said he was going to divide it four ways -- $10,000 going to Mattel's.
I suggested next time he get in the kind of trouble that might draw a larger fine, and from the look on his face, he has some ideas. I don't think arriving late to the field in the ninth -- shirt unbuttoned and apparently thinking he'd been removed from the game -- was one of them.
The Boston Globe reported last month that Ramirez was fined between $10,000 and $15,000 for the altercation.
You may have seen the Manny moment described above if you were watching the Dodgers-Phillies game on ESPN2. From the AP story :
The ninth inning was about to start and left field was empty. Manny Ramirez was missing. Here we go again.
Let's see, there's no Green Monster for him to hide in at Dodger Stadium -- so where in the world was Manny now?
In the dugout, several Dodgers peered down the tunnel toward their clubhouse as Monday night's game against Philadelphia was held up. They looked as though they didn't know whether to laugh, scream or simply shake their heads.
Then, finally, the enigmatic slugger reappeared and jogged swiftly out to his position, dreadlocks dangling and a wry half-smile on his face.
"I just went to the bathroom," Ramirez said with a chuckle after Los Angeles' 8-6 victory. "All the guys said, 'Hey, we play nine in here.'"
This time, there was a plausible explanation -- sort of -- for Ramirez's brief but conspicuous absence: He thought he had been pulled from the game.
In other Manny being Manny news, Jon Heyman speculated on SI.com yesterday that the Manny trade fallout could affect the Red Sox front office. Again, it’s all highly speculative:
People in high places in baseball are starting to speculate about whether this could be the last season together for the highly successful yet increasingly uncomfortable front-office tandem of GM Theo Epstein and president/CEO Larry Lucchino, and one logical ending would have Lucchino joining Manny Ramirez in Los Angeles. It's all speculation now, but it's not all that farfetched.Despite the well-documented difficulties and differences of Epstein and Lucchino -- Lucchino is said by people familiar with the just-departed Ramirez soap opera to have been much more committed to keeping Ramirez, no matter how badly the man-child superstar behaved and how much he risked undermining the clubhouse -- the two innovative Yalies have engineered this Red Sox renaissance and combined to bring two World Series titles to the previously star-crossed and storied organization. Yet there is burgeoning talk among baseball's elite that the end of their baseball relationship could be at hand.
Lucchino denied any interest in leaving Boston or the Red Sox in an e-mail to Boston sports radio station WEEI today.

...hey can you pass me the Manny section
Didn't anyone see the Phillies-Dodgers game last night when the Phils were at-bat in the top of the 9th and the game was held up for about 2 minutes? The Dodgers had no left-fielder on the field.
He's a Dodger now. Get over it, and start posting about the team that's still here.
So welcome to the world of Manny.
They knew who and what they were getting when they got him; so why try to change that? Manny is annoying and unique. We like him that way.
They should learn to live with the dreads. The idea that they must be "cleaned up" is offensive to start with.
Welcome to Terry's World, Joe. Imagine this kind of crap for 8 years in a row. Not so easy to manage a primadonna like that now, is it? Manny is great, no doubt, but holy cow does he come with baggage.
It took a while, for some reason, but I finally figured out how to sum up what happened with Manny.
Manny is as mature as an 11-year-old boy. That's it.
He will undoubtedly hit for you because he's gifted at that. But when he's not in the batters box, he's a boy. Everything he does when he's not hitting is less mature than his teammates, or it's to draw attention to himself, or it's being selfish.
If you're the Dodgers you don't care because he just got there, he's a Hall of Fame hitter and he's currently playing with some hustle. But put up with 8 years of Manny being late to the field for the 9th inning, or claiming his knees are sore followed by forgetting which knee it was, or throwing temper tantrums over tickets or whining about his elite-money contract, and you don't care whether or not he can hit anymore. When you're a normal adult there comes a time when you just need to separate yourself from the mind and actions of an 11-year-old boy.
It's classic human nature. We all have instances in our lives when we put up with someone we wouldn't normally associate with only to get what we want from them. In this case it was two Championships. This year we didn't care how good he was when he was in the batters box, we just couldn't take the rest of Manny's immaturity anymore.
Dream on Joe. Don't you know by now that Manny's words mean nothing.
He's hitting over .400 and they are going to worry about.....hair? C'mon, LA can't be as clueless as Kid Theo and Lizardskin John
What a tool.
10 bucks says he trimms not a thing, son!
until next year that is, when steinbrenner shows this pig what a REAL tantrum is.
I was wondering what the Globe and Boston.com was going to write about once Manny left. Now I know ... Manny!!!
Thanks for the updates! Keep 'em coming. I enjoy reading the latest on our guy Manny!
Why does anyone think that leaving the Red Sox will change Manny's behavior. It's Manny being Manny, man.
Greg, Tim
Get over yourselves. Why do you even care what Manny is doing in LA if you hate him so? And the Globe that couldn't wait to get Manny out of town spends an awful lot of time covering his every moment. He thought Joe Torre took him out of the game in the 9th, as Francona often did. It was a misunderstanding. I know you two mental midgets never make a mistake or have a misunderstanding at work. Manny's of HOF ballplayer...what do you two do for a living? Telemarketing maybe?
I say the folks in Boston and cleveland were both glad to get rid of "Money" Ramirez. Both teams got better when he left. Yes, they missed his offensive production, but not the offensiveness of his actions, demeanor, and lack of team play. Manny being Manny simply translates into "Manny being only for Manny."
Play on Red sox, and lets move on to post season.
He'll get his hair cut right after he re-signs with the Red Sox in the off season for 5 Million per Year.
Neither is going to happen!
Manny is a great player but that can't hold you alone on the team if you cannot give respect to the people around you...
If he wants to become a Yankee next year, he'll have to cut it, so why not do it now.
Okay. We know this: Manny is immature, Manny is a great ballplayer, Manny screwed the Sox, Manny is now a Dodger.
Honestly, what I care about is the Sox and the fact that their chances of getting into the playoffs are slim to none and slim's outta town. I care about Clay B and his inability to throw a fastball. I care that Wakefield is hurt. What I don't care about any more is Manny. And I care even less about his hair.
Can we move on, please?
The Man-ny who cried wolf.
He's like an ex-girlfriend: Great in the sack, but tough to talk to...
Wow, Boston media will do anything to take a shot at Manny Ramirez. Get off his case you're part of the reason he was driven out of town. You build him up to be this loveable character and then you tear him down.
He's gone let him dominate the National League pitching while the Sox fans can think of what could have been this year.
Enough already with the "Manny Show". You media guys helped drive him out of town and now you can't let it go. Manny will be missed, marginally. As with most things in life; this too shall pass.
Wow...Manny won't cut his hair. Stop the presses! This is IMPORTANT STUFF!!!!
What Manny pulled the last few weeks he was with the Sox was a lot more of an issue than his dreadlocks.
Another thing. When George Steinbrenner first bought the Yankees in the early 70's, he had hair that went down well below his neck line bordering on his shoulder. You can look up old photos of the guy for proof of this. And, the Yankees he had on his team at that time-- guys like Munson, and Dick Tidrow, and Pat Dobson, and Lou Piniella, and many, many others not only had long-ish hair, but mustaches that would have made Jason Giambi's look pre-pubescent by comparison. Only in later years did Steinbrenner pretend to care about this "clean image" crap.
Torre managed too many years under Steinbrenner's ridiculous regime when it came to that nonsense, and apparantly it's brainwashed him.
Who friggin' cares how long Manny's hair is?
If Manny wants to be a Yankee next year, he'll have to cut it, so why not do it now?
Eva - get a clue. He's a great player, the only RS shirt I own! And I couldn't wait to see him go because he's absolute poison in the dugout and a morale killer for every other player and manager he comes in contact with. BTW - what do you do? Anything at all?
Forget Manny and move on. He's hitting there and good for him, someone will foolishly give him a huge contract COUGH mets COUGH. I'm tired of hearing that Manny is huge for the Dodgers and it kills the red sox to not have him. Since the trade;
Dodgers 5-5
Red Sox 8-3
Greg- Whatchyou mean "we"?
Got friends from Boston coming in to watch the Dodgers this Friday evening.....now I gotta go with 'em and watch that bum play.....
I'll be rooting for The Milwaukee Brewers!
Eva & the rest of the Manny-defenders,
What do YOU do for a living that you have so few ethics and such a low standard for integrity? It doesn't bother you that Manny is/was a spoiled, selfish, brat who cared far more about his contract than about his teammates? It's ok with you that someone acts like that because he has a "big bat"?
You're willing to put up with any kind of behavior because he hits well? I guess you think it was ok that he shoved another person to the ground. What if Julio Lugo did that? Oh, wait...Lugo would NOT do that!
Do you steal and cheat to get what you want? Tell me how Manny tanking games to get his contract improved is any different than throwing a game that you bet on. Pete Rose, the Chicago "Black" Sox, and Tim Donaghy would love to have YOU as their judge and jury. Pete Rose didn't even gain financially from his behavior and he's barred from the HOF. What about Barry Bonds? Does he deserve the HOF? You have an interesting perspective on what's acceptable.
Good for Manny. He's my all time favorite ball player and it's great to see him hitting the cover off the ball and banging in RBI's again just like the Manny of old. Am I sad to see him gone? For sure! Does it suck to see him swinging the bat so well while wearing another team's uniform? Sure does. But for all the idiots who posted on this board that Manny's on the downside of his career, he's not what he used to be blah blah blah... Look at Manny's production the past two or so weeks since the trade has gone down. I rest my case. Mark my words this franchise will miss his bat should we be fortunate to get a chance to defend our title this October. Manny looks awful good circling those bases in Dodger Blue doesn't he?
The Sox are 8-3 without Manny. They're fine without him so far, ho cares if he's gonna cut his dreads or not? Here's when we may have to talk about Manny again. If he signs with the Mets, and since next year I think AL East plays NL East in interleague, we can talk about him if the sox go to Citi Field
It's all MAnny being Manny until the fanthom knee pains starts or he decides not to run out a ground ball that is eventually bobbled or your team is being no-hit and he feels the need to jog to first in what otherwise would have been a close play.
It's not cute to me anymore!!!!!
"Honestly, what I care about is the Sox and the fact that their chances of getting into the playoffs are slim to none and slim's outta town."
Somebody's not following the standings. We're only 3 1/2 games out of first, we're two games up on the Wild Card, there's a full month and a half left in the season and we have about the easiest remaining schedule of any contender.
Meanwhile, the White Sox and Twins are going to spend the rest of the season wearing on each other, hurting the chance of the Central taking the Wild Card, the Yankees are facing injury after injury and then we've got the Rangers who get to share a division with the monstrous Angels.
How precisely do you assess our chances at "slim to none" off of that?
Geez... I din't know Manny was still important in Boston... let him go for once!
Amazing how you all get in a tizzy about an athlete and his antics. Guys, it's a "game". A child's game! It's not worth getting all worked up over. I read these comments for comic relief. Too funny!

Re Jon Heyman's speculation about possible Red Sox front office changes:
Dr. Charles A. Steinberg, former Red Sox Master of all Pomp and Presentations during the World Series runs and FOB (Friend of the BLOHARDS), joined the Dodgers last December to head up that department for Dodger owner Frank McCourt in the 50th Anniversary year of the move to the West Coast from Brooklyn.
The BLOHARDS (Benevolent Loyal Order of Honorable Ancient Red Sox Die Hard Sufferers of New York) miss Dr. Charles and his great work.
I believe Dr. Charles and Larry Lucchino worked closely together in Baltimore before their move to Boston.
The man-child is a boring, spoiled, arrogant jerk. Let's move on. who cares whether his hair is never washed or whatever. I'm sure whatever is living in it is enjoying themselves enormously.
Manny is 19 for 40 on the Dodgers, right? 1.393 OPS.
He is who he is, and none of this is news. He's a great hitter, mediocre fielder, and somebody who tends to loaf from time to time.
Manny-haters should not lecture anybody about "ethics" when their standards of evidence are so low. The anti-Manny hysteria was fed by rumors and innuendo and writers who turned "no comment" into an indictment. Globe writers in particular have had negative biases towards Manny for years, stemming from the fact that he cut them off from interviews years ago.
hey manny cut your damn hair as when you make $20,000,000 a year you do as your told you piece of $#%^
"Honestly, what I care about is the Sox and the fact that their chances of getting into the playoffs are slim to none and slim's outta town."

Option A - Put up with the whining and antics, pay him a hundred million for the next four years, win two more World Series in the next four years, Manny retires as one of the great Red Sox Hall of Famers.
Option B - Trade him. Make your team worse. Try and re-invent how you win ballgames mid-season. Break up the best one-two punch of all time. Not make the playoffs because you have an average to slightly above average lineup w/o Manny. Lest we forget Bucholz can't throw his fastball to location, Wake is a .500 pitcher at best when he's healthy, Dice-K can walk 5 guys in two innings, and we have no bullpen other than Papelbon, who is not afraid to blow a game here and there. Not the recipe you want in the playoffs, if they even make the playoffs.
= Manny was a difference maker, pay him, stop whining.
Hey, look at the bright side...at least they have a happy clubhouse now!!
I have never heard of a town who is so obsessed with bashing a great player... let it go .. he has moved on and seems happy. Best of luck to Manny. What a sad story that he just had to get out of Boston.
I really wish we could get some Craig Hansen and Brandon Moss updates too.
Ho, Hum !!! Yawn ! Now Joe gets to TOTALLY immerse himself in the LA,LA LAND Saga. They don't call LA the land of Fruits and Nuts for nothin'!!
The Sox chances are "slim to none"??? That's about the dumbest assessment I've heard yet. The remaining schedule is EXTREMELY favorable, the Rays just lost Crawford AND Longoria, and the Yankees look like they are finally imploding. Who is the mystery team you're so worried about taking our spot? According to ESPN's stat tracker, our odds of making the postseason right now are around 83%. I'd consider that pretty good. Blah, pink hats.
Sports is in a parallel universe; the fantasy world where the greatest take us to places most of us could never imagine, e.g. Tom Brady, Michael Phelps, Tiger Woods, MIchael Jordan, Bobby Orr, Venus Williams, etc. etc.
Then there is the business world: the bottom line.
Manny intersects both worlds but from what vantage point do most of us want to witness "the players?" From the stands or from the corporate office??
Fussing about Manny's hair is an example of trying to herd cats. Why bother unless Joe T. is after the cookie cutter baseball look.
Set a date for the "haircut."If he delays or refuses to have it cut, "bench him".He is only one player of the nine necesary to play the game. Don't let the tail wag the dog--- the dog wags the tail.
As Jonathan said, directly above me: "Slim to none"?
If you think that our chances of making the playoffs disappeared on the same plane as Manny, you might want to ask all our veteran players how they feel. You know, considering that they voted for the front office to PLEASE trade Manny if at all possible.
We still have the third best record in the A.L., and the Rays just put both Crawford and Longoria on the DL.
Additionally, you can't claim that Manny would be playing this well if he were in Boston. He's playing with something to prove now...instead of "not playing" to prove a point.
You're willing to put up with any kind of behavior because he hits well? I guess you think it was ok that he shoved another person to the ground. What if Julio Lugo did that? Oh, wait...Lugo would NOT do that!
Bad example my friend. You may be right Lugo might not have done that but he did get arrested for beating up his WIFE. when he was with Houston.
why the fear of dreadlocks... wow, people can't even have their hair grow naturally with it being a problem..
It's all about RESPECT. Bow to the dreadlocks and lick his shoes. Worship the ground he walks on.
Prediction: Before 9/1, his knee will hurt and his grandmother will die once again/
Everyone who posted so far has missed the BIG PICTURE. The Sox will not win with out Manny, PERIOD.
Manny cut your hair!! Others use extenders why can't you when you aren't playing baseball if you want Dreadlocks..DUH!!!!
Like the others who left, we don't hear of them why should we have to keep hearing about Manny?!?!
Who the heck cares about Manny any more... lets remember why we got rid of him... Let Torre deal with him now... He's all the way across the country where he should be
Ten bucks says that D chase was one of the people that said the Sox would never win without Nomar.
I think it matters. Hygiene matters. And Manny's hair does not look like it can be shampooed often, as it should be, when all braided up. Those long fake nails women wear are utterly offensive, dirty, and do nothing to enhance the appearance of the types of women that one sees wearing them.
Salmonella is common to be found under them, and they did a study, and nurses who wore them (and washed their hands) STILL had salmonella bacteria under them.
Do you want these nails bagging your groceries or serving you food???
It amazes me that we even care if Manny's hair gets cut or not. Have we already forgotten the embarrassment he caused our nation, team and organization? Media, stop focusing on Manny and start focusing on the team we have now. Besides he wouldn't give you (the media) the time of day when he was here but now he's acting like Mr. Celebrity on the west coast. It must be contract year. It isn't Manny that will take us to the World Series. Let's give the team we have now ALL the support we can.
Larry Lucchino probably would take exception to the label of "Yalie," despite his law degree from that institution. He attended Princeton as an undergraduate and graduated in 1967.
All that Manny did in his 7 plus years here was to bring to Boston 2 Championships and even after he is traded you still continue to be bitter at him?
MOVE ON!!
Why does Theo still have a job??
Who cares?? Manny's gone, and good riddance. He was a detriment to the team, did not want to be here, and like most prima donnas, was selfish and self centered. Here's a guy that made $168M, and you never heard word one about his "foundation" or that he made a contribution to the Jimmy Fund, or ALS, or the Joey Fund, all worthy charities that we working stiffs may sent $5 or $10 and when we do, we feel it. He may have been a great hitter, but he's losing some of the skill he had in years gone by. Let's hope he gets his wish and ends up with the Yankees. Can you imagine him trying to patrol that left field??
He's yours now Joe, but don't worry you only have to deal with him for the rest of the regular season. Dodgers aren't making the playoffs and hes goin to the yankees next year. So dont bother, it gets you no where, trust us we know.
That's all i can say is I miss my Manny so very very much,
The ball games are so boring without him and i've been a huge RS fan since 1967.
The Dodger's are lucky to have him. I think his bat outweighed his silly antics, but it was so much fun to watch a game with Manny.
It was great to watch the Dodgers last night on tv and boring to watch the sox.
They should have traded uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuke instead. Now you want to talk about whining immature babies?
I don't give a crap either way about baseball, but the man has gorgeous locks and there's no reason he shouldn't be able to keep them.
Why does Theo still have a job? I believe you answered your own question: 2 Championships in 4 years. He's also rebuilt the farm system the duke left in shambles. He's one of the top GM's in baseball and we're lucky to have him. Manny had to go, his teamates even said so. lets move on
I am so sick of hearing about every move Manny has made since he left Boston. I think the Boston press (and a lot of fans) are acting like an adolescent ex-girlfriend when it comes to Manny. "What's he doing now? Has he cut his hair yet? Who is he hanging around with now? Do you think he still thinks about me?"
Get over it ladies, he's gone. It was time to move on a long, long time ago.
It is time for the Globe to leave Manny behind. Teams seem determined to pitch around Youklis now. What about batting Youk 3rd and Ortiz 4th? Then Lowell or Bay behind them. If Varitek could find his stroke, they would really start to win some games. He needs a couple of 2 for 4 games back to back.
Manny is a great hitter, one of the best of our times. I will miss him in Boston and am sorry to see him go.
That being said, I will not miss his antics, his faking it (injuries) and not playing to his full capacity.
He is now the problem of the Dodgers.
How come for 10 days before he left Boston his knees and hammy's were a problem and on 8/1 they were no longer bothering him?
He went to LA and stated he loves it there and wants to spend the rest of his career in LA, for his "piece of mind" -
Next weekend he wants to sign with the Yankees - Gee that was a pretty quick love affair with LA? How do the LA fans feel about him now?
Guess what LA, that is just Manny being Manny.
Deal with it he is YOUR problem.
Doesn't want to cut his hair?
Thought he wasn't playing, typical Manny just being Manny
Larry Lucchino probably would take exception to the label of "Yalie," despite his law degree from that institution. He attended Princeton as an undergraduate and graduated in 1967.
Mike A
Guess you don't pay to much attention or just read what the media feeds you about Manny. You never heard of the MR24 foundation? Well now you have. That is the name of Manny's foundation for charitable causes and he has had it since 2003. Also, Manny is going to get his hair cut at a Fantastic Sam's and the hair will be donated to charity to auction off. It is all set up. but because the LA Times Page2 guy bet Torre that Manny wouldn't have it cut within a week - that is what the dreadlock deadlock is about. Torre lost the bet, but they have been out of town so . . . he wasn't getting dreads cut in St. Louis for sure and San Francisco - guess not. And the Dodgers are lucky to have him and they know it. They are going to sell do-rags with dreads hangin from them - and people are asking for them now - but they aren't ready yet - and the souvenir vendors say everyone wants them. Manny makes the game FUN - like it is supposed to be - don't listen to the serious business bozos who pay attention to the minutia - think Big Picture. The Dodgers are hitting so much better now that Manny is there because is enthusiasm and joy for the game is contagious. He loves baseball - but he does not like negative, closed minded, critics like there are alot of in Boston.
"Everyone who posted so far has missed the BIG PICTURE. The Sox will not win with out Manny, PERIOD."
Whaaaat? Why not pray tell? They are kicking the crap out of people since the Manny trade. If they could just do away with the 1 run losses, they'd be spanking everyone. They'll be fine.
The problem with keeping Manny is you had no idea if he'd mysteriously shut it down and kill your chances in Sept anyway. Now at least they know that the guys who are left are going to work their butts off and at least TRY to win it all again.
He's yours know Joe, but don't worry you only have to deal with him for the rest of the regular season. Dodgers aren't making the playoffs and hes goin to the yankees next year. So dont bother, it gets you no where, trust us we know.
The stories are endless and they started when he was coming up with the Indians. It was best put by a buddy of mine when he was a scout for Cleveland and Manny was a rookie trying to make the squad. Ramirez is a potato head.
Man, I miss Manny!!!! Manny and Pedro were the main reason that I became a Red Sox Fan. Well, I still got Papi!! If Manny takes the Dodgers to the playoffs, he is amazing!!! I love it!!!
Manny is pretty much a ass. Great hitter lack luster fielding..Is all that baggage really worth that bat??.. Have fun with him LA fans!~
I'm just shy of 70 years old and have been a Red Sox fan for as long as I have memory. Manny could have been idolized for centuries had he acted like a man. What a shame. All that talent in such a stupid person.
Here we go. I can't believe people can't see this. He's already making himself
more talked about, a "star" among his team mates. Look at all the media he's generated already. And pushing Joe to see how far he can go? Joe can say he's not, but he's in for trouble. He never should have given him time to cut his hair. Manny owns him. He better slap him down quick, like he should have in the begining. Like I expected. I'm very disappointed in him. Sure manny was amusing in the begining, and he had a great bat, but he had been bringing down the team for a while, and we badly needed the house cleaning. Were doing great without him, and lets see how they deal with the obnoxious arrogance.
It is time for a front office split...Epstein should go. He will always be known for the gutsy and brilliant trade of Nomar which made a Duquette team World Champions. Since then, he has performed poorly. I am willing to take a 30% success rate on the field but, in Management, I have to expect no less than 50% success which Epstein falls far short.
The Sox have won another Championship despite Epstein, not because of him.
Yeah? This is a STORY? Like "dog bites man". Manny is an idiot; we already know that; let's all MOVE ON!! We got a pennant to try to win. PLEASE! NO MORE MANNY B.S.!!!
Manny:
"I want to play for the Red Sox forever." - numerous times in Boston
"I want to play for the Dodgers forever." - while in LA
"I want to play for the Yankees." - while in LA
Which is it?
Manny's an awesome player when he can somehow put away his ADD child and earn his $20M/yr. But the trouble is that he goofs around, has phantom injuries, while other players making an order of magnitude less are working their butts off. Show some respect for your teammates, employers, and the fans who pay your salary through big-$$ ticket prices. He's lost the respect and believability of those around him.
I am happy the Sox are winning.
Just not happy they are now so boring.
Manny, Manny, Manny, Manny.
There will never be another one like you.
I assume the Red Sox players are much happier now without having to deal with Manny. It must have been a burden having his bad attitude in the clubhouse and dugout. He is the typical overpaid player that can not appreciate the money he has made due to the talent he was born with. Great job Theo for having the courage to move him.
What 160 Million wasn't enough!!! He quit on his teamates, manager, and most importantly us fans!!!! Mannny only cares about Manny!!! $%&^^$# Manny!!!!
Paul Byrd is a juice guy. He got caught doing steroids and then made a bizarre explanation about it involving his religion. He's pathetic.
Dodger fan now,
You think it's okay and fun for a player to make $20M a year and quit on his teammates? You're right about too much BS with the Boston media and the fans who know more than anyone else in baseball, but Manny is the one who quit and that's not right, even if he were playing for free.
here's a thought,.....
WHO CARES?!?!?!?!?!? please find something else to use your precious space for.
Manny is pretty much a ass. Great hitter lack luster fielding..Is all the other baggage really worth that bat.. Have fun with him LA fans!~
Hey folks, Manny is gone, so why is the Globe covering him like he's still in Boston. What he does in L.A shouldn't concern anyone in Boston unless you play the Dodgers in the World Series (not likely). Move on and let the guy do his thing in L.A. He's not your player or your problem anymore.
Wow you people are bitter. Its only baseball and a player. Get over it. From a sox fan btw.
It's obvious when Ramirez will cut the hair--when he has an o-fer. No baseball player is going to make a change when he is on a streak.
Then he can find something else to be a horses ass about. And he will.
I am happy the Sox are winning.
Just not happy they are now so boring.
Manny, Manny, Manny, Manny.
There will never be another one like you.
To Jonathan and JP:
Are you watching tonight's game?
It's about the pitching.
No one would be happier than me to see the Sox prove me wrong about the way this year is going. I hope you're both right.
I know it's the Boston way. But you could try harder not to insult people for having informed opinions that differ from yours.
And the main point remains. We've got plenty to think about here. Enough with Manny.
This game is all about money and marketing now.
Tell Frank McCourt to get out his checkbook and give Scott Boras a call.
NOBODY in baseball gives a crap about bad behavior anymore, as long as you put "fannies in the seats", and fatten up those oh so important TV ratings.
Even tho he's a total jerk, and committed the most egregious crime in all of competitive sports-laying down on your teammates-which I think was engineered by Scott Boras, Ramirez will get his payday. As a lifelong Dodger fan, this is one time I hope they fall flat on their face and lose by ten games.
If baseball had a real commissioner, Manny Ramirez would be "sitting" for the rest of this season.
It's funny how the Boston Globe makes so much more of Manny stories than what actually is. If you go to the Dodgers home page, there is a complete and thorough article regarding the 'no manny in left field' incident. It was no big deal at all. I wonder, if I were to log onto these pages in the year 2012, would you still be talking about Manny?
"The idea that they must be "cleaned up" is offensive to start with."
-Posted by Ann F
Ann, It's offensive that he wears them first because he flaunts the rules that everyone else has to live with, and second because they look disgusting. Why would anyone want to look like that, or think it is a good look? As for the Dodgers knowing what they were getting, they got him for nothing. He's being paid by the Red Sox, so LA risks nothing in laying down the law. And yes everyone likes the way he hits, and when he's being funny, quirky Manny. But no Red Sox or baseball fan likes him when he slaps team mates, pushes employees to the floor, plays half speed and half hearted, intentionally strikes out against Rivera, and lets down his team.
After last nights 19-17 win I would not worry about our offense, Manny was a great hitter who gave up on the team anyone who gives up on the team should be shipped out, Theo did a great job getting something for him. I think the sox make a serious run at the playoffs.
What is sad is that Manny thinks his hair looks good! I think it looks awfully ridiculous flying all over the place. The picture attached to this article is hysterical...Supposedly he travels with his own personal hair dresser - I am wondering what does this hairdresser actually do since he is not cutting it and dreads are low-maintenance????
In spite of all his behavior, I have to say I miss Manny. It is too bad that he didn't want to be here - the Dodgers are lucky to have him even though he will, most likely, continue with his antics because that is who he is...
He runs when he feels like it, plays when he feels like it, gets along when he feels like it, but collects his pay every day. I loved having his bat in the lineup on the days he felt up to it, but it killed me to see him jog down the line on days he couldn't care less. Were I a player, busting my butt to win and making one fortieth of his pay, having Manny as a teammate would have driven me crazy. Give me 25 guys who play hard all the time and I will keep on rooting for the Sox.
If I want to know about Manny being a self-centered JERK I'll go to latimes.com. This is BOSTON.COM, let's talk about the Red Sox please. The Dodgers made their bed, now they have to lie in it.
The only time his dreads will be a real issue is when they DEMAND that he cuts them and in perfect Manny fashion he quits being a team player to get them to back down. He's a self centered JERK! Please stop covering Manny's daily exploits. If I care what he's doing I'll go to LATIMES.COM. This is BOSTON.COM, lets talk about the Red Sox!
Who really cares about his hair, is it really bothering anyone? As long as he hits the ball and scores isn't that what we should be worring about.

I love it!!!! Boston is doing well and Manny is doing well!! I am not a hater like some of you people. I am happy for my favorite player Manny and my favorite team Boston!! People, stop taking it so personal!!
some of you clueless idiots should watch another sport like football and the patriots, then maybe you will realize that at this point manny wasnt adding as much to this team as he was taking away from it, they are playing much better without him, lol, some of you are talking about the redsox lack of a bullpen, well manny does pitch? what does his not being here change about that?? was he going to hit soo much better than Bay thru october he would make up for the hurting bullpen??
so Bay is hitting as well as manny would have through the end of the season, root for your team, and start fantasizing someone else on the redsox you will forget about mannythetard
please, manny is a very nice guy ( a kid) dont forget what he has done for boston and all boston fans.........please dont forget.
We Dodgers fan LOVE Manny. Will he stay with the Dodgers? Who knows. We will enjoy him while we have him. Judging by the plethora of responses on this thread, many Boston folks miss Manny on their team.
Babe Ruth is remembered as some demi-god, the epitome of babeball heroism, the greatest player ever, etc. However, in his heyday he was as unruly as Manny if not more so. He dissed his manager publicly and got suspended. He charged up into the stands to confront a heckler. He reported woefully out of shape and caroused when he felt like it. He had his own set of rules much as Manny seems to. Check it out. Yet all of his bad boy behavior is shrouded in the mists of time and only his glory remains. It will be much the same for Manny when he enters the Hall of Fame. If they let him he would wear his do-rag on the plaque and no team hat because he is his own team, a squad of one. So be it. He have Boston some great moments. Then he went sour and made it impossible for the team to ignore his infantile ways. Perhaps he was abetted by his agent, Darth Boras. It doesn't matter anymore. We can remember his World Series MVP and his moments going into the Green Monster to pee, but he is history here. Time to move on. His best years will always be his time with the Red Sox.

you women talking about his hair, saying why should it matter? its called discipline, its the same reason military, law enforcement, etc. keep their hair clean, and of top of it its what the manger wants, of one of the best managers in our day, you need to give him his respect, thats important, unless you have ever played a competitive team sport , or served in the military, maybe you cant relate, but u wrong ladies, its all part of team work and following your leadership, it works, mannys nonsense doesnt

I suggested when he was in Boston that they should have extended his contract for two years and those two years would have been spent in Pawtucket where he could have feasted on minor league pitching. If he wants to act like a child-he should have been treated like one. Sure, the Sox would have had to eat the $40M . They would have "cut off their assets to spite their purse strings".but $$$ today is like Monopoly $$$. He might have then had second thoughts in that any Major League records that he might have achieved would have been jeopardized. It may have changed his attitude. This would also send a message to some of the other Million Dollar primadonnas that baseball (and for that matter other sports as well)has hatched. And just as significant, Boras would be out $$$.
Hello everyone. The trick is to make sure you don't die waiting for prosperity to come.
