Manny gets a haircut, then goes hitless

Our long national nightmare is over. Manny Ramirez got a haircut before last night's Dodgers-Phillies game in LA. Sort of. "He was within the rules of cleaning it up a little bit," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. From today's AP story:
![]() Manny Ramirez got a haircut. (AP) |
"One inch, half-an-inch," Ramirez said regarding the cleanup. "It's still long. If I come back next year, it will be shorter."The slugging outfielder, a free agent after this season, said a local barber did the job.
"One of my friends recommended him," Ramirez said, adding it took "maybe five minutes, 10 minutes." ...
"I was in the principal's office right now," Ramirez said upon emerging from Torre's office some three hours before the Dodgers faced the Philadelphia Phillies. "(Torre) told me he's fine, for now."
When asked what that meant, Ramirez said: "Ask him. I've got to go stretch."
Said Torre: "He came in and showed me. As Billy Crystal said in `Analyze That,' it's a process. He took a little bit off. It's within the rules of cleaning it up a little bit. Right now, it's around his shoulders. It's not covering his name up. We'll continue to monitor it."
Ramirez said he plans to get his next haircut before spring training.
"He haunts me with this," Torre said. "He says every time he gets a hit, it's the hair. I say it's the ability. He knows as well as everybody else around here that his ability is special. He's a character."
So did Manny's production drop after trimming back his dreadlocks? Yes. The hot-hitting Ramirez, who hit safely in 11 of his first 12 games as a Dodger, went 0-for-3 with an intentional walk in last night's 3-1 Dodgers' win against the Phillies.
Following the game, Dodgers manager Joe Torre apparently did not appreciate being asked if Manny's trim had anything to do with his hitless night at Chavez Ravine.
"I'm not even going to dignify that with an answer," Torre said. "He's a great player, and it would be an insult to his ability for me to say it's the hair. I'm not going to go there. I really don't like to joke about somebody's ability. There's been so many jokes connected with Manny that I think it's time we really recognize him for what he's all about."
"He haunts me with this," Torre said. "He said, 'It's the hair.' Every time he gets a hit he tells me, 'It's the hair.' He's been funny. I continue to tell him, I say, 'If it was the hair, I would have snuck into your apartment when you were in Boston and shaved your head.' I said, 'It's your ability.'"
More on Manny's trim from today's LA Times:
In the days leading up to the haircut, Torre jokingly said he would be run out of town if Ramirez stopped hitting, especially with the Dodgers starting to sell Ramirez-style dreadlock wigs in their team stores this week. Torre said Ramirez has needled him on the subject recently, telling him, "It's the hair," whenever he got a hit.
Earlier in the week, T.J. Simers of the LA Times had reported that a deal had been reached to cut Manny's hair with the proceeds going to a Dodgers charity.

What's the craze with Manny's hair? He has hair? He cuts hair? He gets hits? He does not get hits? WHO CARES?? Manny has moved on, I am sure he does not check Boston.com to see who had how many hits and if Sox or their opponents won! Globe, please - just move on with the stories about the team in this town.
Who Cares!!!!!
Manny who? Who is this Manny person they keep mentioning on Boston.com. I have looked at the rosters of the Sox, C's, Pats, and B's and can't find any guy named Ramirez....
Manny.....now perceived by many as just another greedy baseball player who chose to foresake respect and adoration of a loyal fan base to chase a few more bucks. No respect for the man no matter the ability. Enjoy the sell-out Manny
Good God, it actually looks WORSE.
"Manny has moved on, I am sure he does not check Boston.com to see who had how many hits and if Sox or their opponents won!"
Manny's the one who keeps bringing up the subject of Boston, in terms of playing for the Yankees to get back at the team and so on. You're implying that Manny is MORE mature than the writers at the Globe, or the organization, or its fans. Save it - we've all seen his act, and NO ONE is believes THAT.
Its more the hair across his @$$ that he had when he was here that bothered me, I really dont care what he does in LA. His team will never make it to the WS anyways, they dont have the horses to make it past the Cubs, Florida, Philly, or the Brewers.
Who cares is right! He has Dreads, who cares....it's a cultural thing! Grow them as long as you want! His Dreads are his source of power and strength! Read a book on Rastafarian culture or something and you might understand! (Maybe...probably not!) Get off Manny's Jock! He's gone now, deal with it!
Don't be a HATER!
Manny your my hero!!!!
Please stop indulging this hypocrite by writing about him. He made his choice and has skipped out on his contract for the $$$. Please in the name of all that is holy - MOVE ON!!!
Whew!! Manny did something, now you've got a story to write about. The Globe needs to know this, you're acting cheap. Legendary sports journalists have enjoyed a lovely summer vacation doing very little but whining. Seriously, Shaughnessy has written seven straight tear filled break up letters, and posted them for the world.
Obviously, when a person is known nationally by their first name, (Hilary or Michael, for example), the ego will inflate to the size of an old boozer's nose. They will betray you. That's all they've left to do.
So, you need to let this go. Stop walking around with your butt all hurt about it. He left you. Good times never seems so good, do they?
Have your laugh. After giving the bums rush to Pedro, Nomar and now Manny (at least three of the top half dozen players of the last fortyy years, how many decades do you think will pass before the Sox sign another top Hispanic player? No wonder Larry Luccino has his resume out. Hey, wasn't the guy who owns the Dodgers the one who outbid John Henry for the Sox? Oh yeah but the sellers gave it to Henry because he had a better "management team?" Management must have boutght it too because they act like they are more imporant than the players. Ted Williams would have played most of his career on the Yankees if these Palm Pilots had been in charge.
L.A. must be slipping if this is the biggest sports story of the day. What about Anaheim, aka the best team in the bigs..? Thank God we don't have to deal w/Manny's drama anymore. I will admit, I do miss ManRam though...
Manny who?
Steve buddy ... most of us have moved on. Blog about the current Red Sox, blog about the "Don't call us Devil" Rays, or the "we'll be better next year" Yankees. Blog about Pawtucket, Portland, the instructional league or good places to dine while in Baltimore, Tampa, New York or any other city the Sox or you visit.
Just stop with the Manny-this, and the Manny-that ... he's gone and most of us just don't care.
Who cares about Manny! He's a tool that needs the attention.
Seriously though, what about Brandon Moss and Craig Hansen? There just as relevant.
Seriously though, what about Brandon Moss and Craig Hansen? There just as relevant.
Joe Torre quoting "Analyze That" is the real story. are his pre game speeches dotted with bits of "City Slickers II" and "Airplane! the Sequel"? well. as Chevy Chase stated in "Fletch Lives", oh, I see.
Francona should send Torre his left over case of Pepto-Bismol, he'll be needing it now.
Seriously though, what about Craig Hansen and Brandon Moss? They're just as relevant.
Manny cut his hair, Manny jaywalked....don't you guys have anything better to write about?
Manny! Boston misses you soooo much!! You are our hero!! xoxoxoxo
Manny- truthfully you are still an IDIOT!!
Manny: you're a BRAT. Aw...poor baby..$20million wasn't enough for you? WAAAA cry me a river you little sh*t.
Is Manny punishing Joe Torre by purposely not hitting because he was made to trim his hair?
Who provided that picture of the before and after? Now thats quality.
Money being money.
One team's trash is another team's treasure...profound...I know. Thanx for the gift. We'll take the freebie and then see what happens next year. Torre will know if he can handle Manny and want him back.
"IF I COME BACK NEXT YEAR"
so much for loving it there and wanting to finish your career there!
OK... it is time to get over the tabloid-esque coverage of this guy.
It is well past time for a major newspaper to move on as well.
The Sox are hot right now and Papi has come back to life.
Write THAT story.
Or, people can file the Globe under the "Enquirer/Fox News" category of my "completely ignore" file.
Let's talk about RED SOX baseball!
How 'bout that offense??
The barber needs to get a day job.
Manny is so adorable - he looks like an angel.
The trim suits him, takes a few years off. But he's a beautiful man no matter how he wears his hair.
And the Sox are so unbelievably BORING now that people are suggesting bringing back Millar, who is totally unneeded, just for a little buzz.
Sad.
L.A. must be slipping if this is the biggest sports story of the day. What about Anaheim, aka the best team in the bigs..? Thank God we don't have to deal w/Manny's drama anymore. I will admit, I do miss ManRam though...
I miss Manny. But seriously I hope to God he does not end up in NewYork with the Flunkees I mean Yankees.
You want to talk about Pedro, Nomar, Manny -- and don't forget Roger Roidman -- being "run out" of town? Well, what I remember about each of these clowns is that they all spent their last years in Boston pouting about how underappreciated they were, and then later proclaiming how much they were appreciated elsewhere, after they left -- as shown by the large pile of Benjamins given to them to soothe their wounded souls. At least two of these clowns are known to have "dogged it" as a way of showing us just how TERRIBLY wounded their souls were while they sufferered, here. Frankly, I'm with the Red Sox ownership on this one. They've let us know that NO ONE is indispensible or irreplaceable -- especially if their head size gets excessive.
He's a BUM...Granted an exceptional baseball player, (at times, when he wants to be), but he is still a BUM. Boston held on to him longer then they should have. Long ago when he started showing his immaturity by his INTENTIONL lackadaisical play, intentionally striking out (More than a few times), failure to make an honest effort, except when he wanted to----No team needs a player of that ilk. His millions of dollars prevent him from seeing that he is not much different than the South end of a North-bound Horse. Its my guess that soon enough the rest of the Dodger's Players will get their fill of the egotistical slob and their clubhouse will reek of the smell that pervaded the Red Sox Clubhouse while he was here.
I only looked at the article to see how Joe Torre defines "haircut"..it's a joke just like Boston's continued press coverage of Manny. When will the gurus understand that Manny going hitless is engineered by none other than Manny...not the opposing pitcher? He thinks like this...i'll cut my hair but don't expect me to hit, run and field baseballs. wOW...millions in his pocket and he doesn't have to be accountable. What a role model for our youth!
YOU GUYS WANTED MANNY "OUTA" HERE & YOU GOT IT. REMEMBER THE OLD SAYING "BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR, IT JUST MIGHT COME TRUE". WELL, IT CAME TRUE. LEAVE IT ALONE ALREADY. IT'S "OLD" NEWS, WRITE ABOUT SOME RELEVANT "NEW" NEWS LIKE THE PENNANT RACE, YANKS & TAMPA BAY. MOVE ON ALREADY. LET IT GOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please, it's barely a few inches! This is the Globe milking the Manny stories. They will stretch it on forever.
Manny is so full of himself and he didn't care about BOSTON! Let's see if they put up with his BULL with the Dodgers. If they do, they are as crazy as BOSTON WAS!
Later MANNY!!! YOU WILL NOT BE MISSED!!!
Manny will forever be Manny...he has to get his hair cut....he says that he will do what he has to do....he doesn't get it done and rubs Torre's face in it everythime he gets a hit....then he gets a cut and makes such a small difference just to let Torre know he is the boss...then he doesn't hit last night...sounds link the same old Manny. Francona my hat is tipped to you for dealing with him for so long! Francona has to be the master to deal with that garbage on a daily basis and still smile and still run a ball team and still win games....
Write about something else you idiots. Are you guys really that hard up for stories even in the SPORTS world?
I will bet anyone that Manny is going to the Yankers. 100% confidence. It's like hoping your ex isn't with "that guy".... it happens without fail. Get used to Manny in pinstripes, folks.
GIVE IT UP, Boston sports writers!!!
Manny,
Sorry that you went out on a sour note, but Boston still loves you! Good luck and never play well against Boston, that's all we ask. :-)
STEVE- KEEP THE MANNY REPORTS COMING
I live in California and think that the Manny blogging is a great source of entertainment. He took revenge on the Red Sox this season and now he's making the Dodgers pay for the forced haircut.
Unfortunately for Manny, he's going to have to do a lot more bizarre stuff if he wants to stay in the limelight. He's got some very stiff local competition when it comes to puerile behavior... Britney, Lindsay and Paris.
T
Baseball management and the alleged fans have evidently lost their collective minds.
When Ramirez does go into Fenway next year with the Yankees and faces the Sox, what's going to happen...will he just get booed...or will Schilling or Youkilis challenge his manhood?
Never mind focusing on Manny's crazy locks, let's get the look out of football, basketball et al for the sake of decorum and respect for the games these guys are getting millions to play. It has become a battle of the freaks and I am one fan who is fed up with all of it!
There are more creative and effective ways to express one's self--start with consistently working hard on the field, on the ice, and on the court!
PULEEEEEZE! Can we read something about the Boston sports teams? Aren't you tired of writing about Manny? I'm sure tired of READING about Manny!! Move ON!!
Manny being Moron!
Manny! Boston misses you soooo much!! You are our hero!! xoxoxoxo
Manny- truthfully you are still an IDIOT!!

Uh, didn't everyone already learn this when he jumped ship on the Indians? Face it, Manny has always been a pantload; he's just proving it on a bigger stage these days.
Manny: you're a BRAT. Aw...poor baby..$20million wasn't enough for you? WAAAA cry me a river you little sh*t.

Manny's intelligence is on par with a 10 year old boy. He made sure that nobody could pick up his options of 20 mil per season because he truly believes he is worth more. What Manny doesn't realize is that he's worth less than 15 mil per season. He wears 99 because 100 wasn't available (as in 4 years 100 mil). I can't wait to see this clown settle for 4 years 50 mil. Manny will probably retire out of frustration when reality sets in this offseason.
Go Tampa, we only give the bum's rush to bums. Mentally checked-out or about-to-live-in-DL-Land superstars included, if they can't make an ego-free assessment of their age, health, and ability going forward as opposed to looking backward. I suppose we should give a 4-year, $100 Million contract to Scott Boras's client, .217 Varitek, after this season? Or would insisting on about 2 years at reasonable salary with club flexibility be "giving him the bum's rush?"
Who cares? We all do!!!
As evidenced by our reading and responding to this article.
I don't much care about Manny's hair but i sure as hell care about Manny!
Am so sad about how sour things turned out. Life with a happy, winning Sox and and an idiosyncratic but love-able Manny was so great.
I must admit that I have barely been able to think about the sox since Manny's trade. How could this great happy 2007 experience turn into such an angry unhapy thing?
The Olympics have allowed me to bury myself in non Red Sox sports. Then tonight a friend said Manny has been on fire and my reaction was such a bummer. At the mention of Manny the same joy and sense of fun filled me that it has for so long, and then i thought "oh Manny, he isn't one of us anymore" and I felt so bad. So sad.
Manny shouldn't be playing for the Sox if he was so miserable that he wanted out at any cost. I just don't know why or how it got to the point that the management and Manny were both so disenchanted. Especially after I spent so much of last year so totally enchanted!!!

Read comment #11, ignore the rest ;)
OUTSTANDING reader participation point to Go Tampa!
Why does it matter so much to some of you if he wears his hair in dreads? In my opinion, they're beautiful. He does the a great job of keeping them looking good. Leave the man's hair alone and let him do what he does best -- hit the tar off the ball.
Why should we care? The guy is an idiot, when are we going to figure that out? I give Torre credit for putting up with the guy. You can tell he (Torre) is gritting his teeth and baring BoyRam's (he doesn't act like a man) presence for the remainder of the season. Good luck with the six digit contract "Fuzzy" Ramirez...ya dope.
Those are extentions... Get Real.... Thank God he's out of Boston!!! Good Luck Torre!!!

It's a funny story - have a laugh with it! We're known around the country as being sooo serious about sports. Remember: ultimately for us fans, it's entertainment, not life and death. And, the Sox are doing fine!
That's a hair cut? Maybe he is doig it on purpose, but he's got to be having sour thought on how we're doing! HA!! Grow up lttle man.
Mary Poppins? Are you kidding me? Oh yeah...you're an idiot!
When Ramirez does go into Fenway next year with the Yankees and faces the Sox, what's going to happen...will he just get booed...or will Schilling or Youkilis challenge his manhood?
Do you think the globe took that photo. We have so many ways to follow sports
that this little article is just something to amuse us. We have so many
papers and sites to cover the sox with little or no mention of Manny.
Go to Sons of Sam Horn, or red sox prospects on the net see if all we talk
about is Manny. Where to busy following a team in a real pennant race
not one barely playing 500. ball. By the way talk about possessed the
Dodgers have try to have everything RedSox on this team.
Manny's comments suggest the honeymoon is already over in LALA land. The Dodgers seem to be making the same mistake the Sox made-Having one set of rules for Manny and another for everyone else.
All this hatred of Manny...gee whiz
A lot of people give the handwave to derek lowe, nomar, and manny, totally discounting what they did in the past..I'm pretty sure Derek Lowe was awfully good in 2004...Wasn't he that guy out there on the mound in oakland in the 9th inning of game 5 in the ALDS? Nomar, didn't he have some success in the late 90's and early 2000's? Manny too, im pretty sure he hit a big home run of barry zito in 2003...but that was 2003, so people can just forget about all that now....and who cares if he hit the homerun of k-rod last october..
i guess it all depends on if you root for the laundry or the name on the back of the jersey..how many real red sox fans would like the meathead that is kevin "youuuuk" if he was on another team?
How come no one has mentioned Samson yet...?
Just thinking...
Great disguise, 99!
hair-cut ???
Is it the process? or the result?
IM SORRY TO SAY THIS BUT I WENT TO WEDNESDAY 8/13 GAME EVEN THOUGH WE WON,THE RED SOX ARE NOT THE SAME WITHOUT MANNY!!!! I LIKE TO CHEER FOR MANY OF THE GUYS BUT I USED TO LOVE TO CHEER FOR ORTIZ AND MANNY ONE AFTER THE OTHER!!! I MISS U MANNY!!!
as a dodger fan...Boston can stop hating...you got rid of him so stop worrying about stupid little things like getting a haircut...you didn't want him and now we have him so write stories about your own players!
I'm a Red Sox fan and a big Manny fan. He has personality and talent. A lot of both. How could you not enjoy that? I am most impressed with what a student of the game he is. Manny has a tremendous work ethic you never hear of. He has many God given talents but he has worked hard to improve them.
I think it's funny that so many of you feel the need to say "who cares?" Obviously you do, since you decided to read the article!!
I couldn't help but notice that most if not all of the pro-Manny comments, the I miss him, life isn't the same without him stuff, are by women. I wouldn't dare call them pinkhats because i know how true the female fans of the Sox are, but it makes me understand a little more about Manny's mystique that so many female fans are missing him so much.
You are right about the female fans saying they miss him more and I'm a female and yes i do miss him after all these years. But I also am so glad he is finally gone and we don't have to deal with the manny being manny crap! every year at the same time.....and then he would get over it and play. The whole knee thing and him faking it was outrageous just like the pushing down the guy and the comments like we don't deserve him. Yes we are glad he is gone but you know he fakes his knee and does great in L.A. and that gets us mad since he is having no knee issues like the sun just fixed it all. I know that he has much talent and helped us win two world series but it wasn't just him it was a team effort. He knows that the redsox deserve him.... and him saying that he is going to go to the Yankees and give it to us is so rediculous......he needs to grow up a little bit and realize that ya he has major talent but that isn't an exception to act like a complete idiot!!!!
I enjoyed watching Manny play ball for the Red Sox.I can't believe that he could not settle for 20 million and a chance to stay in a place where he was so loved. The Red Sox are definitely kind of Hum-Drum without him.Fans did not enjoy all his antics, however,New England fans appreciate talent when they see it.There is not a harder working hitter in baseball than Manny Ramirez. He works hard at the game, to bad his initials sum up his communication abilities .MR.(MENTALLY RETARDED).
