Manny on his way to LA

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff August 1, 2008 11:12 AM

Manny Ramirez departed to LA this morning on a private charter with a couple of friends.

According to one of them, who wished not to be identified, Ramirez was excited about heading to LA where the Dodgers will also pay him a $1 million relocation bonus, which was a provision in his contract if he should be traded.

"He loved the fans here," said the friend. "We went out shopping yesterday and the fans all around us were saying, 'We don't want you traded!' He always loved the fans here. His problem was with management. He just wanted to know about his future and where he was going to play."

Ramirez was asleep when the trade went down and didn't know about it for a couple hours later. He is scheduled to play tonight at Dodger Stadium, where the team has scheduled an introductory press conference for 7 p.m. ET -- "on the field behind home plate."

I look forward to our team being a team again, not a circus.

  1. Disingenuous drivel from a baby millionaire. On the bright side, having just moved from LA back to Boston after 20 years, I take solace in knowing that a $1 Million dollar relocation bonus won't by him a descent Condo in a nice section of the city. Enjoy the traffic and cavernous outfield in Dodgers Stadium Ma$$y...

  1. It is finally over. The nonsense of "Manny being Manny." The truth is that his career has been "Manny being Selfish and Greedy." I love sports, especially baseball and the Red Sox, but Manny is just another overpaid athlete.

    Life will go on.

The fans will continue to overpay for tickets and merchandice ... Boras and Manny will make a few more millions.

  1. Manny and the Dodger fans = a perfect marriage
they get a player who plays and hustles when he wants
and they show up and leave the game when they want.

    Hey man, no worries.

  1. Sorry Manny... management treated you far better than they should have. Forgive them if they have paid you $168M over 7 2/3 years and has the RIGHT (i.e. club option) for an INFLATED $20M next year, which they had the RIGHT not to make a decision on until November. I don't know what fans Manny saw, because if you listen to talk radio, the majority say GOOD RIDDANCE! Take your tired and whiny act to LA.

  1. Manny Ramirez could be the poster child for all that is wrong with today's professional athletes - nothing but rich immature spoiled brats!

  1. Mr. Boras got what he wanted and Theo and company let it happen. Someone needs to stand up to that bozzo!

Clearly, Boras was feeding Manny with ideas that he could get more than $20mm a year over the next two. I think he is crazy. He should have learned with A-Rod that there are only two teams willing to pay a player that much...Sox and Yankees. The Sox most likely are out of the Manny mix next year and given the Yankees new low cost appraoch and need for pitching, I suspect they are out of it too. So, Mr. Boras where will your star client play and make more than $20mm a year next season? You just lost your client at least $2-5mm a year, but at least you will be paid...Isn't that what this is all about...getting Mr Boras paid? What a joke he is....

How come Boras is not pushing his other client here in Boston who is a free agent next year...Tek....because he cannot hit and he knows that he will not have a chance at a big pay day - especially with Posada as the only comparision. I really wish these players would wake up to the business side of baseball and stop listening to agents like Boras...they should hire real agents who look out for their best interests.

Boras should have been pushing Manny to perform so that the Sox wanted their option...Maybe than Boras could have talked to the Sox about making it a longer term deal. If he performed, I suspect they would have considered it...Worse case...Manny pulls down $20mm next year. Oh yeah...Boras would not be paid!

  1. manny manny manny...what about the prospects that were roped into manny's deal. Craig Hansen and Brandon Moss, let their voices be heard too. I'm sure they didn't know that they were going to be dealt to the Pirates come 4pm yesterday.

  1. Ateam is unity. And if he was on the Patriots he would have been bounced years ago. He needed to go. It's not about Manny or anyone, it's about the team. The Red Sox will continue to win and we will see the team improve big time. Thanks manny for the memories but take your band wagon and move out.

  1. His explanation is complete hogwash.

Manny is in an even worse situation now.

He has no idea where he will be playing next year. He is in LA for a temporary 2 month season.

After the season, he will be a free agent, the same as he would be in Boston. There was no way Boston was going to pick up a one-year $20 million option on him. Manny wanted a 4-yr extension at $80-100 million. It's doubtful he will get that anywhere. This is all about greed. He didn't want to play out the year and take a chance on free agency. So, he began tanking ... not hustling, sitting out and being a distraction. What a huge baby.

He probably figured his best shot at a big contract was after his performance in last year's post-season. When he began slumping a bit (bat speed slowing down), he began panicking and putting pressure on the Sox to re-sign him. They had all agreed to discuss it after the season. So, this is entirely on him.

A professional athlete who doesn't give a complete effort for $20 million is an immature and selfish person. This management payed him $160 million over 8 years. They complied with his request a few years ago and put him on waivers. No other major league team would pick up his contract.

So, it's complete hogwash that he just wanted peace of mind. He could easily have agreed to an extension with Boston at the right price. Or, he could have played his best and gotten top dollar in free agency. No one would have blamed him if he tried his best and the Sox had a good year.

But to give up in the middle of the season is a joke. The Sox had no choice. They had to move him even if they got nothing in return. He was only going to be a negative on the team for the remainder of the year (just like in '06).

It was the right move to trade Nomar. It was the right move to offer Damon and Martinez three year deals. And it was the right move to trade Manny.

Good luck with Joe Torre. The Joe Torre in New York would have required him to cut his hair, hustle on every play and show up on time to every meeting and every game. If he doesn't do this, Joe will yank him from the game. He's sat down A-Rod and Giambi. He won't hesitate to discipline Ramirez.

This was a necessary step by the Red Sox, and it was 100% Ramirez's fault.

  1. Manny will be sorely missed. He was a great player. The Sox managment and the Boston fans suck.

Posted by JWNH August 1, 08 12:39 PM
  1. Should have just told him that they were not picking up his option and then he wouldn't have acted like a kid and played hard so he can get that long term deal from another team next year. Management is hoping what happened in 2004 when they traded Nomar will happen again or the "nation" will not be happy.

  1. Since I injured my knee and can no longer play ball myself, I coach young kids. Nothing, but nothing riles me more than not hustling - maybe it's because I wish I could play, and they don't appreciate that they can. That Manny couldn't find the desire to compete each day and every play to the best of his ability says as much about his heart as his head. In 2004, we awoke to the contrast between Jeter taking a header into the stands and Nomar sulking on the bench. We didn't know it at the time, but we became better for it. Let's hope history repeats itself, and Jason Bay becomes our Orlando Cabrera/Dave Roberts.

Nobody has forgotten the scene at yankee stadium when the sox and yankees were in extra innings and every sox player was on the top step of the dug out except for nomar. He also turned down a 4 year 60+ million deal before that season, how did that work out for you? These ex-sox players are all bitter b/c the sox management does the right thing in not overpaying aging ball players, it's not smart management.

  1. Manny was a great player here and we have to Thank him for all that he did to help bring 2 World Series Championships here BUT the situation of the past 2 weeks was ALL on Manny! All he had to do was show up and PLAY and the Sox probably would have picked up his option for next year but Manny could not do that. He had to act like a spoiled brat and talk trash to the media. Boris had something to do with this. Had the Red Sox picked up his options Boris would not have gotten paid and that is what it is all about. Boris never has his clients best interest at heart just his own. Manny is not going to get the 20-25MM that he is being told he can get. If anything Boris lost Manny money but as long as he gets paid I guess it doesn't matter! Boris is BAD for baseball.

I will miss the Manny of yester year but I will not miss the Manny of the past 2 weeks.

  1. As far as I'm concerned anyone that is saying "Good Riddance" is a complete fool. Manny did take it over the line this past week, and we has been a distraction over the last month or so...but he's a top 5 (if not the best) hitter in baseball and I did like his attitute towards playing the game...ya he's probably a bit greedy but anyone who thinks the Sox are better off now are kidding themselves - don't be so quick to turn on a guy that played a major part in bringing two champioships here to Boston...he's not even close to being as bad as the likes of Johnny Damon or Roger Clemens...and next year when the Yanks sign him he'll feel the impact of all the boos at Fenway...

Oh ya, and Dan Shaughnessy would you please just retire? I'm sick of hearing your nonsense all over the papers...

I wore my team colors (not Yankees) and got stuff thrown at me the ENTIRE game, to include beer & urine; and geesh the names they were calling me! I found Red Sox fans to be the WHINIEST of all fans, baseball or otherwise. Why can't you just enjoy a day at the park instead of whine, whine, whine.

  1. With this move, the Red Sox once again become the whitest team in baseball. No blacks in the regular starting 8 in the field right now (until Lugo comes back, if he does), no blacks in the starting rotation, and none in the bullpen. We have David Ortiz and occasionally Coco Crisp.

The Red Sox were only able to win the WS after they banished their racist past with a trio of great black Dominican players at the core of the team. Now two of them are gone. Here's a prediction: we don't get back to the WS until we undertake some affirmative action on the roster.

The temptation to get white players is partly a function of the overwhelming whiteness of the Boston fan base. Even if it's subconscious, it's a pernicious legacy, and a losing one.

It's a tragedy that it came to this. Manny is the best pure hitter since Ted Williams, a worthy heir to his mantle, and I'll miss him. Full disclosure: I'm a white guy.

  1. While he is a great hitter (undisputable), he is also a overpaid egomaniac. . He was dealt away at a huge discount, which is bad business, but LA can use the extra $7 mil to look for the largest hat to fit his puddin' head. For the greater good is the only way to reconcile this event. Better to keep the team focused on the job at hand, to win ballgames, than babysit the ole Manny boy.

  1. Jason Bay is a good solid player, Manny is great hall of fame player. Jason Bay has played in pittsburg and is batting .219 with runners in scoring position. Manny has played in Cleveland (where they went to the WS twice and were a great team from the day he arrived to the day he left) and Boston (where he won 2 WS, a WS MVP & was an 8-Time All-Star). Not to mention while in Boston he was great in the playoffs. Interesting qoutes from AL East rivals which makes my point. Al East Rival Gm: " When Manny came to the plate, it was like you had to pass out ex-lax to everyone on the team." Translation: Manny has a great PRESENCE that cannot be understated and is always overlooked. Big Papi is awesome but Manny was his protection. Its no coincidence that Drew was playing lights out when he was in the three hole batting in front of Manny. And look now and Drew is playing to that level anymore. That is no coincidence. I know he wore out his welcome, but the only reason he was traded was because of the team's performance, if the sox were winning Manny would still be here and no one would care about all the off field distractions and lack of running out groundballs. Manny hasnt run out ground balls since day one and since he has always been on winning teams no one cared. Manny isnt here or in this league to get infield hits or break up double plays. I know its not the right way to play the game, but when you can produce like one of the greatest right handed hitters of all time, it goes by the boards. I think Bay is a good player and will win over a lot of fans with his play. But can he replace Manny? NO WAY. Can we win with Bay? Absolutely. Will we win? We will see. But when the bright lights of October turn on, we knew what we had with Manny, we have no idea how Bay will react to October and Boston. I think he will be good here, but only time will tell. I also dont think we should throw him into the fire right away and bat him fourth, thats way to much pressure for a player like Bay. I will miss Manny, he had a lot of great moments and a lot of great games. The off field stuff and everything else doesnt matter to me, he won, he won alot and he produced from Day 1 to the last day. We will miss you Manny. Lets go Jason, time to step up to the bright lights of Boston.

  1. I think it’s sad that we as Boston Fans are bashing the player who before he played in Boston, the Red Sox did not play in the World Series in over 15 years and not won a title since 1918. Before you bash the player as we know as Manny Ramirez, show respect to the player who at times carried our beloved Red Sox, and I bet at one time every red sox fan embraced #24.. Stop hating on the man and show love because it seems everyone is focusing too much on the negative things, but we need to focus on the positive images of Manny..

Yes, he wasn’t a great outfielder and we can all agree he was in his own world but damm didn’t we see probably the best and I mean best hitter in the past 10 years.. Fans in Kansas City, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and other small market teams would love to have the sports market we have and we as Boston Fans have been acting too spoiled the past 10 years.. I can’t believe I see more negative comments then positive comments about the PLAYER who contributed to 2 WORLD SERIES TITLES, 2.

We as fans have no clue what goes on between the scenes between management and players , and how many times in our lifetimes have we made a stand to our boss's and moved on to another job..

I'm not happy the way he went out of town myself, but I rather spend my time in my life to focus on all the positives Manny Ramirez brought to the game and I go back to the summer of 2004 when he brought so much fun and energy to the game.. Focus on the positives more then the negatives

I think thedeciding factor for managemnt this times was overwhelming clubhouse vote to move Manny. The fans need to know Manny and his agent caused his demise, not the management.
Manny got more breaks than anyone, since Rocket Roger did with Kevin Kennedy.
This was all about his agent not getting a big paycheck if Manny stayed in town. By the way, what happened to "I want to end my career in Boston" C'mon you Manny lovers, he was aproblem and needed to go. I hope the Sox meet the Dodgers in October and sweep them.

  1. Manny Ramirez is one of the best hitters of all time..someone who would perform in clutch situations and helped us to 2 championships..this is one of the most feared hitters in baseball. Not only did we give up the best right hand hitter in baseball.. but it will affect ortiz's numbers also... everybody will just pitch around him.. Jason Bay isnt half as good all around hitter as Manny.

  1. “Quote” I live in LA and have been a Dodger fan my entire life. Manny will be great in the Dodger lineup!

Sorry Boston but guys aren't what you used to be.

That's right we've won two World Series in the last 4 years and we don't over pay athletes anymore. We're a better team for it. If you think you're better off with a guy who says you don't deserve me to a team who "MADE" him then he's all yours. His vacancy injects almost the entire Florida Marlins payroll back to the budget for players who realize playing that MLB is a privilege! And secondly my sympathy for having to live in that sewer for all those years. Enjoy yet another player from the Red Sox grave yard of has-beens’.

  1. To 61,

It is not my inmtention to disparage Red Sox fans, just thanking mangement for letting us borrow Manny for the rest fo the season. I would never make disparaging comments about people from other areas. It shows a lack of intelligence. Good luck with the rest of the season. Congrats. on the Celtics. Let's hope we're both back in the finals next year.

  1. I never liked Ramirez. Sure, there's no denying that he can be a great player, but he's not a Red Sox player. The likes of him don't compare to the likes of Pedroia, Lowell, Tek, and others who are the heart and soul of this team. Manny was just a bloated, selfish child with talent.

Good riddance, and it's about time!

  1. My concern is not so much Manny as Craig Hansen and Brandon Moss. Manny has what... a few years at best? He'll land on an AL team next year, bringing himself (and Darth Boras) big money, then whittle away his remaining career.

The shame is Hansen and Moss. We lose a Hall of Fame superstar AND two young prospects, all because the team was so steamed they were ready to mutiny against Francona if something wasn't done. The Pirates knew as much, as did the Artful Dodgers. Thus, the Sox gave away not only Manny, but more importantly, the future. The Pirates are the big winners (Arghhh!) here.

Seems we'll be reading about dozens and dozens of ex-Red Sox superstars scattered throughout the leagues, traded away for this reason or that (or, in this case, lack of reason -- Manny's). I thought the Sox at least had a relief pitcher on the hook, too, when the original trade was about to go down with the Fish. Next thing you know, it's the Dodgers as the third party and only one guy surfaces at Fenway, sitting at the dock of the Bay.

A shame, really. Almost blackmail. Thanks, Manny, for rewarding the fans you claim to so love (when it fact there's only one thing you love and it's in a mirror near you). Good luck in LA and thanks for the memories (and the contributions toward the World Championships).

  1. All criticism of Manny aside, you all seem to forget all the great moments that he made happen. I'm talking about those moments that gave you goosebumbs! Clutch hitting, and a sense of the moment that only the great players seem to have.
Yes he had a poor attitude, and we all wish he could have been a better role model, but I wish everyone would spend a second thinking about the media spotlight that these players have to live under. How would you do under a microscope? if your every action on, and off the field were made readily available for everyone to scrutinize and criticize! Great athletes are often criticized for their ego, but that ego is exactly what they need to make the great things happen that they do, and then their criticized for it being all about them. It's obvious to me that the majority of people posting comments have not inspired anyone to be great, or even done any great things themselves.

  1. No Manny, no 2004 and 2007 World Series Championships.
Only 24 people in baseball *history* have hit over 500 home runs.
2004 MVP of the World Series, giving Boston their first Championship in *Eighty-Six* Years.
Babe Ruth helped Boston win a few World Series, then he was sold. Those who do not understand the past are doomed to repeat it.
You want respectful, hustling, punctual ? Or do you want once in 100 years talent ? Wrong choice.
Enjoy the 21st Century, Losers :-)

  1. Seems to me that all the "Mannyites" or "Mannapologists" are pink hats, little kids, bandwagoneers or all three. The guy is/was a great hitter, no doubt, and when he chose to play, he was a great asset for the Sox. The fact is though, he chose to be a little baby and not honor the contract that he signed 7.5 years ago.He would have pouted and tanked and been a general pain in the butt if he stayed. He had to go. And this "James Linkin" character who posted above is a clueless knucklehead, and a racist at that. Newsflash Pinhead: talent has no color.

  1. well, The folks who deplore Red Sox fans..... how can you generalize tens of thousands of people from all walks of life into the adjectives above? That is not logical. Does that mean that all LA fans are bronze, buff, friendly people who ALL go to the ballpark to sit and enjoy the game? Sounds like too many happy pills to me. The majority of us in Red Sox nation loved what Manny did for the team (no dispute) but if you are getting an obscene amount of compensation then you best damn perform and do it smiling and telling everyone how much you love your job. I personally think he got bored (lack of a better word) and wanted to shake some excitement in and GET MORE ATTENTION. This debacle does the team I love no good. And if Manny being Manny was professional then... it would be professional. Sadly, Manny lacks the professionalis and is ego-maniacal. Even A-Rod (whom I personally despise) is a professional. ByeManny, thanks fro the memories (truly, thanks) but it is time for you to go and good luck LA. You just got another overweight East Coaster to look at. Fakes.

  1. Here's the deal. It's this simple. Manny is an uneducated and unintelligent BIG Kid that plays baseball. He is goofy and affable at times which most people loved, but he was also selfish. I believe he truly wanted to stay here and didn't trust management. THat's not to knock management at all. He doesn't understand that this is a business. He pulled "kid like" antics when he thought he was getting screwed even though he wasn't getting screwed. I'm sure Scott Boras didn't help. Listen, I bet Manny's IQ and intelligence level is the same as 3rd grader. He moved to the Bronx when he was 9 years old and can't even speak English??? You can't put him in the same Category as Lowell, Tek, etc. These guys are intelligent and college educated. Manny is a dumb BIG kid. Simple as that. Maybe that's why we loved him....

Posted by Tom Hamill August 1, 08 02:07 PM
  1. "He just wanted to know about his future and where he was going to play."

If Manny had stopped whining and stopped acting so follishly and speaking to the media everyday then the Sox would have simply did the '09 option and negotiated his final contract as a ball player.
He creates unhappiness and mental anguish where none exists. Everybody in mgmt loved Manny and he is aware that the team would look into a new contract after the '08 season - company policy not to negotiate during the season.
Scott Boras wanted money and a new contract would give him his share as the current sox contract, negotiated under a different agent gave Scott ZERO MOULA!!

Posted by networkdood August 1, 08 02:07 PM
  1. Scott Boras is the madman behind all this I think. He wanted Manny out of Boston so he could become a free agent after the season. He didn't want to run the risk of the Sox possibly picking up the option for next season because then Boras wouldn't get paid. The Sox have already shown that they are willing to open up the checkbook to keep "some" of their players around (Lowell, Schilling, etc.) and Boras didn't want to take that risk. Well Boras got what he wanted, next year Manny will get a contract (although it's not going to be as big as he thinks... I'm thinking a 2-3 year deal around $15 million), Boras will get his commission, but the real losers in this equation are the Boston fans. Manny will be missed by many, but Jason Bay is an up and coming star and it might just work out for us.

Posted by Steve August 1, 08 02:12 PM
  1. All the Red Sox brass, players, fans, etc. have known Manny's approach to the game for a long time. He's made mistakes but everyone in Boston is complicit in this situation--we accepted it in exchange for his talent and ability to win ballgames. It's over--appreciate what his talent brought to Boston (2 rings) and accept what's happened without all the personal attacks. It's a shame but trashing him all day long gets us nowhere. To quote Theo in '04, it's best to just "turn the page." He was a great talent, great to watch, but it's better off this way.

Especially that one last year vs Anaheim in Game 2 of the Division Series. Clutch.....

  1. Talk about cry-babies!

It's never good enough for SOME red sox fans...
Manny, a fan favorite / clutch hitter / 2004 WORLD SERIES MVP, was crucial to bringing 2 World Series Championships to Boston.

But instead of recognizing these accomplishments - we get the "WEEI/Boston Herald mouth breathers" whining , waiting for their next serving of media pablum:

"Oh-waaaaaaa! He knocked down a old man in an argument Waaaaaaaaaaaa!"
"Oh-waaaaaaaaaaaaa! He didn't run fast enough!"
"I'm sick of MANNY BEING MANNY waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"

MANNY did not get paid to be a role model... sure he's got an ego...he's pampered and spoiled - what player (measure for measure ) ISN'T CODDLED AND SPOILED?? Do you really think we really know what goes on day to day behind the scenes? With YOUR favorite player (MY FAVORITE is MIKE LOWELL BY THE WAY)????.

MANNY got paid to play the game and to WIN...AND THAT is something we all watched him do , in plain sight, with no sportswriters...no talk radio projections.

I'M GLAD MANNY IS GONE. - BECAUSE NOW I WON'T HAVE TO READ AND HEAR THE WHINING AND COMPLAINING EVERYTIME HE PICKS HIS NOSE..
IT WENT ON FOR YEARS AND NOW IT'S OVER.

YAZ clashed with management but he stayed...FISK had to go...NOMAR had to go... This is / was always about MONEY...

So, to all you manny-haters - what are you gonna do when once again we bear witness to "manny being manny" in Yankee pinstripes ???

  1. So this is what they mean when they say "addition by subtraction". The way their season had been spiralling lately, if the Red Sox kept Manny they wouldn't make the playoffs. They still might not, but at least they have a chance. When you have a cancer you have to cut it out. No matter what Manny says, it was always about the money. And don't believe his gripe about how the Red Sox treated Pedro Martinez. They offered him a great contract; it's just that the Mets offered more money, and Pedro decided to go for the money (it's always about the money). Seeing what has happened since Pedro left, I'd say the Sox were smart for not offering him a long-term deal.

Management has been telling Manny that they were going to pick up his option since spring training, and they went back on their word. Much like they did to Bronson Arroyo, when they got him to sign a sweet deal telling him they wouldn't trade him, and then proceeded to go out and trade him. Don't be sucked in by what talk radio and the media tells you.

  1. These ex players that complain about their treatment just reinforces my feelings that they are very spoiled rich people. They forget what it was like to not have much money. Let them put the management title on and see what their business decisions are. Can't you remember when Clemens was playing for Toronto. He made such thing about having to carry his own luggage at the Toronto Airport. They are so spoiled. The only issue I have with the present day Red Sox management is they put up with the Manny and Pedro behavior so long. These people can't have their own rules. I bet the old time players can't stand Manny with his lackluster running and fielding. Good move Epstein.

Stupid Red Sox ego, including that of a GM (who hasn't had a single hit in the eight years the Manny was the best player in basebal, not just a Red Sox uniform) caused all this. Hope you enjoyed winning with Manny, cause you won't without him. I know from experience. I'm an Indians season ticket holder.

Have you seen the things Manny has said and done in the last 2 weeks? Do you really think the ownership went after Jason Bay because he's a white guy? Or perhaps because he's hitting .282 with 22 homeruns and a .885 OPS and was the best option available at the trade deadline? Stop being a race-baiting moron.

To the "white guy" complaining about the lack of diversity on the Sox roster, note that Lowell is Puerto Rican, Ortiz is Dominican, Delcarmern, Cora and Lopez are Latino and we have two Asians in Dice-K and Oki. Add in Lugo and that's 9 out of 25, or 36%, more than 1/3 of the roster. Most of the "blacks" in MLB are Latinos, as the # of African Americans playing in MLB is declining LEAGUE WIDE so before you bash the Sox for being racist, get your facts straight. Idiot.

In the end it was Manny being Boras's stooge.

I'll miss his bat but would rather have my children see how a whiner gets treated.

Remember, for all of our feelings on this Manny left a team full of good players that depended on him. I hope his parents are proud of the Hall of Famer who somewhere along the line he stopped being a player and became a prostitute.

  1. It WAS time for a change ... and that's too bad. Both sides benefited tremendously from one another. The Red Sox wouldn't have won two world championships without Manny. Management also made him a very rich person. Baseball, first and foremost, is a (BIG) business. Every GM struggles to get players who will help a team win games. Team chemistry is paramount in the success. Manny's recent comments were selfish and immature. Many experts are saying this was a bad move for the Sox. That remains to be seen. Joe Torre is getting a great hitter who can't run well and is average at best defensively. With no DH, Manny's going to find it physically challenging to play well on a day-to-day basis. It's going to take a lot of time for these wounds to heal. I hope Sox fans have patience with Bay because he has the potential to be a solid player.

I'd love to be able to be there when you losers find out your boss is looking for a replacement in YOUR position. Just as stupidly as you, I can sit there and narrow mindedly look at the actions of a frustrated employee and claim your a "spoiled brat". The 3 - 4 combination of Ortiz and Manny has been a dynamic duo, if not the best. Agree, I think Boras is to blame for his erratic behavior over the last couple of week. 1. Its funny how Manny HAD TO LEAVE only after he insulted the front office. The front office didn't have a problem with him shoving a 60 yr old man or punching a teammate in the dugout. This is so transparent. Its not what he did but who he did it to. I hope everyone watches Manny go on a hitting parade in LA. Best of luck Manny!!! You are and always be the BEST clean-up hitter in baseball!!! Theo's a punk.

  1. Tek negotiated his last contract with the Sox without Boras. He may be do the same thing this year and may even want to stay here at a discount. If the Sox exercised their option on Manny, Boros wasn't going to earn a cent on that because that contract was done with Manny's old agent.

  1. I Have been a Red Sox Fan for 48years. i loved Nomar, but it was time to go. I loved Pedro, but it was time go. I loved the way Johnny Damon played, but it was time to go. Manny was awesome. I would always paly attention when many batted, because even when he struck out looking, it was an event, we will all miss him, but it was time to go. The current management finally caught on to why the Yankees won 26 championships. Act professionally, play hard and compete. Are the Red Sox better without Manny? No, but al least the will play hard. Watch, Dustin, Youk, Lowell, Ortiz, Varitek, Drew They play the way the game was meant to be played. Win or Lose

  1. Don't expect him to fun too fast - I'm sure he'll be tired from the flight.

  1. Manny...if you cared for the fans so much, please explain WHY you didn't give your FULL EFFORT?? You are nothing but a lying egomaniac!!

  1. I've been a Red Sox fan since the early 50s and I have really enjoyed watching Manny hit a baseball. He is truly gifted but his approach to the game is shameful. However he is not the only professional athlete that acts the Manny being Manny routine and that is sad for all the money they are paid and admoration the get form the fans. Boston may not win without him but it didn't appear they were going to win with him. It's time to rebuild hopefully with some athletes that care and the Red Sox have a good group to build with. Good luck to Manny but better luck to the Red Sox!

  1. #65- You're great. As for the "never-was" who coaches little league; get over yourself. I don't care if a player doesn't hustle to first or home because, if that player is Manny, the ball already left the park. Manny did exactly what was expected of him...HIT THE BALL FOR A HOME RUN. And as for the rest of the team, they should've sucked up the antics and play ball. When I pay for a ticket, I'm not interested in getting to know the players' personality. I'm there to watch a game and see the best. The Sox are no longer the best.
As for everyone who thinks Bay going to fit in fine; get your head out of the sand. He's from the national league which is the equivalent of college pitching, he's never played in a pressure situation. One name, Rentaria. Its the Yanks division to lose.

  1. how quickly we all forget...the red sox could not even compete before manny came here...manny made the team more attractive for free agents...manny led the team to two world series championships...while he may have been tough to deal with while he was here, now is the time to reflect on the great things he brought to the team, and the hall of fame career that we were lucky enough to be a witness to. While i agree, it was time for him to go, one shouldnt downplay all he has done in boston. the ownership made the right desicion, but my feeling is that much of this manny bashing taking place now is a result of us getting hosed in the trade, and the front office trying to justify it...lets give him credit for leading us to two ws championships, something we couldnt achieve for 86 yrs prior. my have we become spoiled....

  1. Believe me, I've been a Manny fan, but enough is enough! Good luck to you Dodger fans, you're on cloud 9 now but we'll see how you feel in a couple of months after Manny has pulled a few of his "manny being manny" isms.

  1. "The Sox wouldn't have done it without him, so I say "Thanks, Manny." That being said, he's a spoiled brat and I'm glad to see him go to LA-LA land where he can be with Paris and Lindsay."

  1. Well, an occasional home run, and strike outs. I can do that. However, when Manny decided to push down an administrator for Tickets. Shows his intelligence. I have not be a fan of Manny for a couple of years now. Attitude. Hall of Fame or not.
I think the front office had enough. Were they wrong with Pedro or Damon. Go for the money. We'll see what happens. Joe Torre and Manny? HA HA HA
    A loyal Red Sox fan.

  1. BoSox Fans,

Like a good deal other professional athletes, Manny is a spoiled baby. We will welcome him here in L.A. His press conference just ended. He was charming, claiming he wants to be here.

His act will wear out here, just as it did there, and we will send him down the road. Face it folks. Sports are different. Players RARELY play for one team an entire career.

  1. I'll tell you what! manny has more clutch homeruns that tied or put his team in the lead than the whole sox roster combined!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he steps up when it is needed the most!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! to say he is selfish is mindless... when was the last time a varatek homerun tied or put the sox ahead? count it on one hand!!!!!!! the sox dropped the ball!!!!
    I'll miss you, Manny!!!!!!!!!

  1. I LOVE Manny Ramirez, but it was time for him to go. There is NO DOUBT that we would not have arrived at where we are today without his help, but his poor sportsmanship of late has created an atmosphere which is NOT conducive to winning. Given what he was receiving to play here, he should have BEEN playing as opposed to doing what he wanted, when he wanted and then blaming everyone else... Anyway, I will miss him IMMENSELY, but am welcoming Jason Bay here with open arms.
