More on Giles

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff August 8, 2008 03:43 PM

CHICAGO -- When Brian Giles nixed a chance to go to the Sox today -- before the 1:30 p.m. deadline to make a deal -- the Sox weren't entirely broken up about the situation, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation. While they would have liked to have Giles, a high on-base percentage guy, it was about a 50-50 split between wanting him and blocking him from going to another team (Tampa Bay).

The team had only preliminary talks with San Diego and Kevin Towers about it before Giles said he wasn't interested in being traded. The outfielder is very comfortable in San Diego, and didn't want to leave a good situation, both because he likes the area and because he likes the playing time.

  1. Just view Giles as the FIRST player who will refuse to play for the Sox after the Boston front office waged it's disinformation campaign against Ramirez.

Leaky Larry, thanks a lot - are you going to leak 'news' to Lobel that Giles once refused to swing on an inside cutter?

Theo, great job - and thank your lucky stars Shaughnessy's wisful thinking about an 'official MLB probe' is just more Curly Haired Boyfriend sour puss vindictiveness...with little resemblance to reality.

Because if the MLB starts taking a second or even side look at Theo's tactics, NO PLAYER is going to want to sign here.

  1. I didn't know Giles was 37, best to pass on him anyway. If they want somebody who is younger, faster, hustles all the time, plays his heart out and will forever be a red sox even if he doesn't play for us right now...I got two words for you:

I know he had an absolutely fantastic start of the season with the Brewers. Haven't heard much lately, so I hope he is not injured. But we would love to have him back, and I'm thinking I heard he was getting crowded out in Milwauke, so he might be had easily.

  1. I think it's an interesting sidenote that Jason Bay was traded to Pittsburg by the Padres for Brian Giles and now Bay's the one that's the big shot. Having Giles be in a backup position in the outfield with Bay as a starter may have been a bit awkward. We don't want any distractions for Bay, who's dealing with enough adjustments as it is, so I'm glad this deal was vetoed.

  1. It's 7 pm and there's no line-up post on this blog. That's lame. Amalie better get things squared away. Fantasy players depend on Nick's line-up each day.

  1. Yet another player who doesn't understand that the point of playing professional sports is to WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP. I don't anticipate the Padres doing that this season, and if Giles hated it THAT much here in Boston, he could demand a trade at the end of the season since he's signed to a multiyear contract. I never get why players prefer to stay on losing teams when they have a chance to go to a winner. That's yet another reason why I loved the Sean Casey signing. He knew what he was getting into by coming here and he was happy to sign to give himself another chance to win a World Series. I'm still concerned about Papi and Lowell being more hurt than the Sox will let on based on the fact they're willing to make a move like this one though. I hope my fears are unfounded, but we shall see I suppose.

  1. Your guys' Sox coverage is slipping recently.
If you're going to link to Shaughnessy's article on the "investigation", how about following that up with the MLB statement about there not being an investigation?

Where's the lineups for tonight's game?

Please finish out the season strong.

  1. Brian Giles is a great player but nobody will ever remember him because he could care less about baseball and has never done anything significant in the sport. 37 years old and cant go what? 3 months without his family? to join a team in a pennant race? This guy is completely ridiculous and totally selfish. He might as well retire after this season because I dont see SD bringing him back nor do I see a contender having any interest in him after him proving that he only wants to be comfortable in baseball and doesnt want to actually have to WORK for it.

Im glad he nixed the deal. Red Sox could do without a gutless Giles.
