News, notes and lineups

Jonathan Papelbon has been suffering from pretty potent migraines the past two days, but he said a little while ago that he would be available to close the game tonight if needed.

"I've had them pretty bad the last couple of days. When I get them it affects my whole body. But I should be OK. I take the medication. I should be OK," he said.

David Ortiz reports his wrist has been feeling fine lately. No clicks, or discomfort right now. Ortiz seemed to be in a good mood and optimistic about remaining healthy the rest of the season.

Certainly all eyes will be upon Paul Byrd, the Sox' newcomer, who will make his Red Sox debut tonight. He was scratched last night because of the rainout and he seemed quite anxious about getting out there, according to Terry Francona.

Byrd faced the Blue Jays in his last start - August 9th - and pitched very effectively against them. He went 7-2/3 innings, allowing for hits, no runs, three walks and struck out four. Byrd is next scheduled to pitch five days after tonight, which would again be against the Blue Jays. That would be three consecutive starts against the same team, which is rare if not unheard of.

Here are the lineups:

7. Jed Lowrie, SS

  1. It's not unheard of, Between May 24 and June 4, 2001 Pedro Martinez made three consecutive starts againt the New York Yankees.

Mike Mussina started the first two games for New York against Pedro, but Ramiro Mendoza was given a spot start in the third because Joe Torre didn't want to put Mussina into a matchup against Pedro for a third consecutive start.
