News, notes and lineups

TORONTO - J.D. Drew is currently at a local hospital undergoing an MRI on his back.

Drew was originally in the Sox lineup, but his back, according to Sox manager Terry Francona, has gotten progressively worse as the day progressed. Drew has missed the last three games since leaving Sunday's game in the third inning and it doesn't appear he'll be in the lineup anytime soon.

Josh Beckett threw with no complaints for 10 minutes off flat ground in right field before the game. Terry Francona said Beckett with throw his normal side session tomorrow in preparation for Tuesday's start in New York.

Tim Wakefield also threw a side session and could be in line to pitch this week in New York, but Francona wouldn't commit to that quite yet.

Francona said Julio Lugo did suffer a setback to his left quad while running in the outfield on Wednesday. Francona said Lugo would not be able to resume his normal running activity, but said, "he doesn't feel too bad. It didn't get worst. His range of motion is good. It's definitely a setback, but how far, we'll see."

Chris Smith is up to take Clay Buchholz's roster spot.

  1. Wow, what a lineup. Maybe the worst I've seen all year. Just a week or so ago, we saw the best we've seen since Japan. Compare:
    Today Last week:
    Ellsbury - Ellsbury
    Pedroia - Pedroia
    Ortiz - Ortiz
    Youkilis - Youk
    Bay - Drew
    Lowrie - Bay
    Varitek - Lowrie
    Cora - Casey
    Crisp - Varitek

That was even without Lowell. What a fallout in just a week, with reports of two more pitchers (Beckett and Wake) hoping to comeback from injury. The entire rotation has spent time on the DL except Lester (knock on wood!). The Sox depth has saved them this year, but if Drew and Lowell don't get back soon, these games against the Jays, Yanks and Rays could be like walking the plank.

  1. Anyone know why Kyle Snyder hasn't gotten a sniff with the big club this year? I just looked at his stats with the PawSox and they look decent. I'm not saying he'd be up here striking guys out left and right, but for a bullpen with so many holes, he was always serviceable. And couldn't he make a spot start or pitch in long relief?

  1. No offense to J.D. Drew, who seems like a decent guy, but...he's making tons of money, too, and every time he gets a hangnail, he's on the DL, being rested, or getting MRI's.

    What's with this guy?

And, what's with the double standard of killing Manny (and I've been guilty of late of that myself), yet giving Drew a free pass?

  1. This weekend: off day, 3-game series, off day. And they need an 8-man bullpen?

Apparently, Aardsma was hurtin' and Timlin was "limited availability" because of his 61-pitch appearance. Aardsma is back on the DL today, before the game or after? I think after. (Backdated to 8/21?, so he is back on 9/5.)

Pauley is called up today for Sunday's game.
