Beckett has inflammation in elbow
TORONTO - Sox manager Terry Francona introduced new information about Josh Beckett - indicating the right-hander has had inflammation in his right elbow.
That coupled with sleeping on the arm has created the tingling and numbness which he experienced in his last start last Sunday at Fenway. It was the first time in this process the media had heard the word inflammation.
According to Francona, Beckett will now be pushed back to next Friday against the Chicago White Sox at Fenway to give him extra time and to be on the safe side. Tim Wakefield will be activated disabled list and pitch Tuesday in New York.
Francona said after talking to pitching coach John Farrell they decided to take an "overly-cautious" approach. Francona said Beckett wants to pitch, but seemed to be on board.
Beckett just threw for about 10 minutes in right field to Farrell. The plan is for Beckett to throw his side session on Tuesday in New York.
Francona had not yet spoken to right-fielder J.D. Drew this morning, but he was not in the lineup. Francona said they're trying to alleviate the spasms in the back. The MRI results, according to Francona, did not show anything new or different. Drew has apparently had a herniated disc for a while.
On Jason Varitek's recent five-game surge: "When he hits we're a better team. When he doesn't, we can still win," said Francona.

Nothing on Beckett is news for the BOSOX management. Any Sox fan knows they have been hiding this info all along. Beckett (for Beckett) has been just soso all season. Plus he has shown little of his fiery personality. Wakefield will get pummeled in the Bronx and then the shoulder problems will magically reappear. I just don't get the Red Sox thinking. Solid pitching was the key that won them 2 World Series yet they have allowed the pitching especially in the pen to crumble slowly this season. Hope they are not going to allow the off season to pass them buy. No pitching in the pen and we will be back to the old days of watching the Sox fade intp the sunset. Also wish Tito would recognize a little management goes all long way. He is so predictable, never any surprises, a little small ball once in a awhile would be a welcome change.
Say hello to Tommy John surgery. Numbness in his pinky and ring fingers are tell tale signs of ulnar collateral ligament damage. The Sox need to talk to Dr. Altcheck of the Mets. Pitching on Friday (or whenever) is just going to make it worse and delay the inevitable.
Well I am not so sure that the Red Sox knew of anything wrong with Beckett until just recently, while he has not been what he was last year, he really was not like last year in any other year, so, it is what it is, a sore arm, I hope it heals fast, for him and the team, Locky, you are 100% correct about Tito and small ball, the Angels play it, they played before the big Tex trade and continue to do so now...and so do the Rays...Joe Maddon spent years in that organization, and now the Angels bludprint is in the American League east.....making runs, pressing pitchers and defense, dropping the bunt, running on contact, always pressing, its not too late for the Sox to pick up their game, time is running out...keeping the pressure on the oppositions pitchers and defense will make the other teams throw more pithces and slow their tempo witch let the Sox do what they do best, go deep into counts and score runs....the bullpen, well, i have no answer for that, it is shakey at best..that has to be the first offseaon goal, then perhaps another arm, a catcher and power bat....oh well, this season is far from over....go sox
I would say with their "different" line-up small ball seems like an answer to manufacture runs. You just don't want a man on second when Papi comes to the plate as he will be IW'ed every time!
Great work, well researched
