Ortiz reportedly feels 'click' in wrist

Posted by David Lefort, Boston.com Staff August 5, 2008 07:45 AM

David Ortiz acknowledged last night that he's already feeling the effect of not having Manny Ramirez to protect him in the lineup (he's 1 for 15 since the Ramirez trade), but that might not be the only reason to worry about Big Papi.

Ortiz told the Boston Herald last night that, in his ninth-inning at bat, he felt a "click" in his left wrist, which was injured (but not surgically repaired, as was erroneously reported in this space earlier today) at the end of May (partially torn sheath).

"My last at-bat, it kind of pulled back a little bit," Ortiz said. "You feel that click and you get a little concerned about it."

A cause for concern, or no big deal? Stay tuned ...

  1. While I can understand the psychological effect that having Manny in the on-deck circle provides, shouldn't Papi be walking more if they're pitching around him? Or are pitchers just throwing lights out at the corners because they don't care if they miss and Papi walks? If he were 1 for 8 with 7 walks, that would be one thing, but I don't think he should be talking about Manny when he is 1 for 15.

  1. Bad reporting. Ortiz did not have surgery on his wrist as indicated here. He just let it heal.

David Lefort: You're correct, this was my mistake.

  1. Papi had SURGERY on his wrist earlier this season? Papi was on the disabled list because they decided rest AND NOT surgery was the best course of action ... geez follow the team much.

  1. I'm not seeing Ortiz getting nothing to hit. I'm just seeing him swing and miss a lot. In the A's series he had some very good pitches to drive and he was overswinging and popping them up. He needs to concentrate on making solid contact first and the HR's will follow.

  1. This is a major problem, The wrist injury is one that needs months to heal without surgery and it may never heal without surgery. I'm afriad that if Papi is out for the remainder of the season ( which is probably the best thing) it really doen't matter how Bulcholtz pitches...its over baby.

  1. Ortiz is a professional. He shouldn't even talk about another player protecting him. Is he saying that players should be dealt in a packages of two and three now since one cannot do well without the other? If Ramirez made him look so good then maybe he is not as good as we thought he was. But again, Ramirez did not hit those balls for Ortiz. Big Papi did it on his own. So, respectfully, Ortiz should just play now and not bring up old distracting news like Ramirez. If he cannot hit the ball, it's on him, not the fault of who hits in front or behind him. If pitchers pitch him a certain way now, he has to adjust. That's what great players do.

  1. Good reporting, admitting an error.

  1. So what? Just deal Papi to the Dodgers for a utility catcher hitting .230 and all will be well. It's going to be a joke watching this lineup without Papi and Ramirez for the rest of the year. The golden era of Boston sports championships is waning. It was great while it lasted!

  1. Do the Sox make the Manny trade again if they know Ortiz is going to be out of the lineup?

Posted by Ben August 5, 08 11:33 AM
  1. I know this is going to sound strange, but if Ortiz did in fact hurt himself (which I'm hoping he didn't), then having Manny still around could've possibly been worse for this team. I say this only because he was pulling these stunts with Ortiz back in the lineup, could you imagine how he'd try to leverage the situation if he were still here (As an example: You need me in the lineup with Papi out so how about we re-negotiate my deal or I may be unavailable to play due to my knees.....)

Naturally if you knew he would play, then it would certainly be better having him here still.

So let's just hope this isn't a big deal....

  1. David needs to realize Manny brought the trade on himself. He quit on his teammates and there is no excuse for that action. David needs to step up and lead this team to the playoffs. His body language since Manny departed looks very down. The Red Sox did the right thing and David has to come to grips with that fact.

  1. the redsox will finish 3rd or 4th in their division because of the manny situation.its all about money the sox will be the loser in the end and manny is right the redsox don't deserve a hall of famer like him. ortiz will not put up the numbers he should because of the manny deal. i'm a real ticked off sox fan.

  1. I don't think Big Papi should be saying anything about Manny's absence. Big Papi should follow Tek's lead and be more diplomatic/stratgeic with his comments.

  1. Let's see...Manny leaves...Ortiz is clearly disturbed...he's batting with no real protection (and it shows)...he reads the papers and scans the boxscores and knows Manny is being Manny---tearing the cover off the ball...in Dodger Blue...He also sees the aftermath in Boston with the "good riddance" attitude and the mocking of Manny's mannerisms and voice...he's Domincan and can understand what's happening here....So now he hears a 'Clicking" noise in the wrist...what will those two sports "talk" show boobs in the AM be saying about this!? And will the Curly Red-Headed "beat reporter" start questioning Papi's medical analysis...? Who are the six "teammates" who asked for Manny's trade (the keepers of this asylum were all too happy to comply. Next, we'll read that Nurse Cratchette has been appointed team RN practicioner...those six "inmates" might also start to question David behind his back)...And then there's good old "Red $8 million for nothing"Lite" (hey, why shouldn't he talk...there's nothing else to do but dream of Tampa Bay or some other town he'll be playing in next year)...Old Blood and Guts will undoubtedly appear, for a fee, on EEI and pontificate... Stay tuned....I've predicted BOTH Papi and Papelbon will undergo the wrath of the Knights (pawns) of the Keyboard...it might happen sooner than even I imagined...but I guarantee it it won't be Schill cause he's already mentally checked out of town...don't let the door whack you in the rear, Curt! There are more teammates out there to throw under the bus

  1. I think Ortiz is not acting right here and he should step up and offer to bat clean-up. He should be protecting other batters, like Bay, Drew, and Lowell. Not the other way around. Step up!!!

Posted by TeddyBallgame August 5, 08 12:18 PM
  1. Yeah right. He's just faking his injury so he can be traded just like Manny was. Yet another overpaid ballplayer who doesn't appreciate the game.

  1. I've never heard of one batter who was supposed to be so great needing so much friggin' "protection" in the lineup. I mean, was Manny really David Ortiz's entire Superman costume? Are we finding out that without Manny, David Ortiz IS actually the same hitter we got from Minnesota? Or could this be a latino player brotherhood thing where Ortiz is one of the few who's a little depressed. Besides Lugo, and perhaps Cora and Lowell, the Red Sox are pretty white-bread at the moment. Is Papi pretty bummed about that or what? Or maybe Ortiz is just wearing out. Some guys are just more prone to injury than others.

  1. Doe - I think you're right about the fact that pitchers now can throw at the corners and don't care if they walk him, but that wouldn't necessarily mean Papi would have a lot of walks. Pitchers have always had to worry about walking him in the past, so he's not used to having to eye those close pitches. That would explain his numbers.

  1. The beginning of the end for the Sox in 08 (and beyond)

Posted by Joe August 5, 08 01:15 PM
  1. Oh come on. It's clear that Papi is having a down year (if not a total backslide), he was batting under .150 WITH manny behind him earlier in the year, and has been bitching to the umps the whole time.

Unfortunately I don't think we can expect 55-homer Papi to come around here anymore.

  1. I found amazing how easy is for Boston's fans to forget what Manny did all these years. And reading Mr, Schiling's comments about Manny make me sick.
I hope Curt is called to introduce Manny when he gets into the Hall. He should do it because Manny is a HOF and Curt is NOT.

  1. We're done. No Manny, Ortiz not healthy. This does not boad well. I know everyone wants to jump on the Bay band wagon and say what a god send he is. The fact is he is a slightly better than average hitter who fields better than Manny. His bat scares no one. The Ramirez trade will cost the Sox a visit to the post season. It's a good thing the clubhouse is a happier place. Let's see how happy it is when they cruise into third place in the AL East. That's exactly where they are headed.

  1. Maybe that's why Lugo hits for crap. He never had Manny to protect him in the lineup. Lousy excuse. Don't blame the fact that Lowell is behind you in the order. Man Up, Papi.

  1. Mr, Schiling's has no class Manny is gone and he still talking about the guy. What
about him he havn't either pitch a game this year and he still getting paid 8 millions. Schilling ripped off the Redsox because He knew his arm was done. I agree Schiling isn't HOF but a trouble maker

  1. Personally I'm glad Manny's gone, he was not a team player and Baseball is a team sport. Anyone who knocks down a senior citizen should be jailed no matter what the reason. I will miss Manny but right is right and wrong is wrong. and lastly every player is expendable , it takes more than one outstanding player to make a team

Posted by MeMe August 5, 08 02:30 PM
  1. Take it easy, guys. You still have a great order and great pitcher. Despite obviously not being Manny, Bay can be a very good number four hitter on a championship team.

And you are quick to forget that the Yankees aren't in great shape, especially if Joba goes down.

  1. David wouldn't be human if he didn't miss Manny as a friend and a teammate. I live 2000 miles from Fenway and I miss Manny. It has got to be very difficult for David right now with Manny gone.
As hard as it is to hit in the major leagues, I can't imagine David doing it well if his injury isn't healed. Let's hope the 'click' is nothing.

  1. There's not even a negligible difference in Papi's on base percentage with Manny or without Manny over the last 3 years. For the first time since he arrived here, Papi is starting to irritate me. I don't think anyone should think that this team has a chance to win the WS this year - with or without Manny - it doesn't seem to be in the cards. The only players who have really been amazing this year are Pedroia, Youk, and Jon Lester. The rest have maybe had their moments, but nothing great. Lowell might be in the next group with Drew playing pretty well. Sean Casey is not getting enough playing time. Jacoby has not found his groove. Hey, we're not going to win every year. I think John Henry and group know that.

  1. Uh oh...Typical pre-04 Sox Fans lining up on the Tobin in August....

Lighten up on Schilling. Schill called Manny out in 05 and when Knucklehead Felger (btw love your bashing of ESPN now that you are gone, felgie...putz) goads Schilling into sharing it again we blame Schilling? Get a clue folks.

Manny was great for us in the past and when it came time to put up or shut up he decided to put up a stink and get shipped out of town. You can thank Boris for this because Manny was never bright enough to come up with that ploy on his own.

Ortiz is on thin ice with that wrist and it's his handling of it which is cause for a 1-15 slide, not the absence of Manny.

  1. Anyone who thinks we'd have gone to the playoffs with Manny couldn't have been paying attention this year. Manny's effort was a joke since mid-June - when he actually played anyway. He HAD to be traded. He had quit on his teammates.
When Boras comes to Theo and says "O.K. he'll be good now if you don't trade him" - that says evrything you need to know.

  1. Whom will Dan turn on now that Manny is gone? Will it be Ortiz, or maybe Matsuzaka or one of the hallowed 'veterans'? I predict Ortiz - expect a preliminary stab-in-the-back attempt sometime after Labor Day.

  1. He's just lobbying for his buddy... look at Youk's numbers. He's having a better year than Manny anyway so I don't see how it can be much different having Manny or Youk in the #4 spot. And am I the only one who'se seen Manny's production drop the past 3 years, he is 36 yrs old people, he's a major defensive liability and runs the bases almost as poor as anyone in baseball. Bay may not give us the same run production but he'll more than make up for that with everything else he brings to the team, most notably a good attitude and appreciation for playing in a town where the fans fill the stadium.

  1. Hmm. Is Chris Carter still with the big club, or back down in Pawtucket? He seems like the natural successor to Ortiz at some point. Of course, Papi's got awfully big shoes to fill, but you have to start somewhere. Signing Bonds is no solution, nor will wishful thinking about David Ortiz' better days help.

Not saying Carter is the next Ortiz, but I AM saying Ortiz is no longer the Big Papi everyone loved. He's still a great presence on the club, and you hate to lose him as a man, let alone his bat. But that's baseball, you lose a Ted Williams and look to a Yaz, lose a Yaz and look to a Rice, etc.

I hope the 'fans' bailing on the club in a rather difficult season STAY away. Go root for the Yankees.
