Report: Red Sox claim Brian Giles
According to a report in the San Diego Union-Tribune the Red Sox have claimed outfielder Brian Giles off waivers from the Padres:
The Union-Tribune has learned that the Boston Red Sox have claimed Padres right fielder Brian Giles off the waiver wire, if only to keep him away from the two teams with better records in the American League. Thus, Boston entered a 48-hour period in which the Sox have exclusive rights to try to work out a trade with San Diego.Giles is not in today's starting lineup for the finale of the Padres' series with the New York Mets-- Jody Gereut's penciled in to play right field -- though Manager Bud Black said the day off was scheduled and Giles is available to play.
"Just a regular thing," Black said. "Day game, 37-year-old player."
The Red Sox wouldn't seem the most likely team interested in Giles, since they already have an outfield loaded with stars J.D. Drew, Jason Bay and Jacoby Ellsbury as well as Coco Crisp. They may just be protecting themselves against Giles landing with one of their division rivals and/or teams they may face in the postseason.
After Giles had cleared National League waivers, the only other two AL teams after Boston with a shot at claiming him were the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
If the Padres and Red Sox do not work out a trade, the Padres can retain Giles, whose contract includes Boston among the 10 teams with which he has veto power for a trade.
More on Giles and the Sox from the Union-Tribune this afternoon:
It could come down to whether Giles finds a salary increase enticing enough to consent to joining the Red Sox, one of eight teams on his no-trade list. Giles, 37, likes to play every day. The Red Sox, who don't appear to have a starting job for him, probably cannot give him as much playing time as he would get from the Padres. What do the Padres stand to gain from a trade? At least $2.75 million in payroll relief this season, plus talent in the form of prospects from Boston's deep farm system, while perhaps retaining access to Giles for 2009.

This is a block, no room for him, even he would be nice to see in Fenway
Umm, it would be nice if the article had given us an idea of Giles numbers this season. Ya think you could provide this?
ESPN's report says Giles did not list Boston on his limited no-trade clause, so he could not block a deal here. Not that he would...going into the heart of a playoff chase usually motivates older players who've never "Won It All".
The big question is where will he be used? Our outfield is pretty well stocked with Bay, Jacoby and J.D. Coco is a top-notch defender in the 4th OF role. If Papi is going to miss more time, then he'd make a reasonable DH replacement. If Lowell needs a couple weeks off, could Giles play 1st as Youk moves to 3rd?
I'm sure I could look it up on another website, but an interesting add to the post would have been his stats
well, my logic isn't perfect, but didn't the bosox lose two outfielders in the manny trade and only gain one?
Why would the Sox care about blocking Giles from the Rays?
They should trade Crisp for Giles.
"Giles, whose contract includes Boston among the 10 teams with which he has veto power for a trade."
What does this mean? He can choose 10 teams over which he has veto power? If he gets traded to one of the other teams not of the 10 - then he has no veto power?
Giles is being acquired to be the DH when Ortiz undergoes season ending wrist surgery.
If Giles come in, who leaves? Is it time to move Coco Crisp? It's either him or Sean Casey. Of the 2 I'd prefer to keep Casey who doesn't get anywhere near the AB's he deserves. Coco's just one of the automatic outs at the bottom of the order.
Can he be claimed and immediately traded away for a relief pitcher for the bullpen...we dont really need Giles, but if he could be worked in for a trade for the bullpen that would work,
Why didn't the Sox put a claim in on reliever Chad Bradford? I know he isn't a lefty but he has a 2.46 ERA and now the Rays have him!

I know Giles well, how about really protecting David Ortiz will a big bat. I like Adam Dunn who do you like? Coach A ( Carlos Pena's babe ruth coach)
We really don't need that bloated 'roid rager. I guess it's just Theo's way of blocking out the Evil Empire and Rays.
Any chance they can play Bay in CF, Giles in LF in smaller parks and get the hole that is Ellsbury or Crisp out of the lineup?
I repeat:
WHAT ARE THIS GUY'S STATS FOR 2008?????????
CAN YOU LET US KNOW???????
So what's the point? Are the Sox going to trade a young pitcher? Lugo might be a possibility.
why sign him if he can not play ? just to block him from two teams THE RAYS AND ANGELS If he can not get playing time here he will be unhappy just like jay payton was when he was a redsox.
At least if they work out a trade the Sox would have back up in case of injury...still a decent hitter too, and you can never have enough veteran experience down the stretch!
Wow Matt! Can't look them up on your own?
This is NOT a block... the sawks are trying to get this guy--and cross yer fingers...
The guy is a lifetime .293 avg. power-hitter, hitting about .292 this year w/ a career OBP of around .404. (OBP: .390 this year) Consistently, good numbers.
Although his power numbers have dropped this year, if are able to trade him for Coco (or maybe a middle-tier prospect,) then it would be good insurance, considering Papi 's and Lowell nagging injuries.
Although Giles can invoke a no-trade clause, hopefully he'll appreciate having a shot with a team that is actually in contention -- that'd be new for him.
I live in San Diego and have the "pleasure" of watching the Padres everyday. Believe me, Giles is a veteran player playing his days out in the sun and surf. He is nothing special by any means. 6 home runs / 37 RBIs / .295 avg. Slow with very little power and very little range defensively in the outfield. We don't need him on the Sox
Giles to Boston? But then who would Boston trade? Crisp? Julio Lugo? a
Minor leager? I don't think Boston should trade Crisp. Maybe he's not great at the
plate, but he's good in the outfield and fast. Maybe Boston might trade Julio Lugo
since he might not have a JOB when he gets off the D.L. with the way Lowrie is
playing. You might loose some speed, but on the bright side you get a good power
that maybe could hit behind the hot Jason Bay?
If Giles goes to Boston, where would he play?
I want to now, if Giles goes to Boston, where would he play???
Hey Dana,
Do you know ANYTHING about journalism? Obviously not.
No, I can't...I'm at work...I can only go by what they print here...a journalist is supposed to supply all pertinent information.
You must be young or at home with free access to a computer that can get the internet. I'm stuck with what I get at work, and can NOT access info outside of it.
BESIDES THE POINT...journalists these days are LAZY.
