Report: Sox sign catcher Ross to minor-league deal
Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports is reporting that the Red Sox have signed catcher David Ross to a minor-league contract, according to major-league sources.
(AP) |
Ross, 31, drew interest from the Red Sox and Phillies after getting released by the Reds. He will report to Class AAA and eventually become the Sox's third catcher behind Jason Varitek and Kevin Cash. The Sox would need to promote Ross by Aug. 31 to make him eligible for their post-season roster. Ross also could be added for the playoffs if Varitek or Cash were injured. ...
The Red Sox will be his fifth team, and first in the American League.
Ross hit 17 homers in 311 ABs in 2007, and 21 homers in 247 ABs in 2006. He also owns a .381 OBP this season, despite hitting .231 with 3 homers (52 games of action).

He was one of the few players who actually tried for the Reds this year. I bet he is happy to get out of that atmosphere.
Not a bad move. Just hope it doesn't turn out like Javy Lopez a couple of years back.
A good move....depth can be crucial in September....we've seen this to be true many times.
Finally someone who can replace that bum Varitek.
I don't believe the statement about a player needing to be on the major League Roster by August 31st is correct. If a player is in the organization before August 31st, he is eligible to be on the postseason roster. Otherwise, teams would not have any decisions to make when finalizing the 25 man postseason roster since they would be stuck with the 25 that were there as of 8/31.
If my memory serves me correctly, wasn't K-Rod a September call-up the year he pitched more innings in the playoffs for the Angels than he did during regular season?
He'll be the starter next year. Sorry tek, but you gotta bat good too.
I saw this guy hit 2 long homers in a game a couple of years ago against the Marlins in Joe Robbie Statium. I had never heard of the guy but I will tell you that both were upper deck blasts that looked more like 8 or 9 iron shots than anything else. I was hoping the Sox could get this guy. I don't know how good a defensive catcher he is but he has a ton of power and will love The Wall!
Just one clarification - Ross could replace ANY injured player on the playoff roster (getting ahead of ourselves, I know). He doesn't just have to replace Varitek or Cash if they get injured. I like the move for depth purposes, but I still wonder what the Sox have planned behind the plate in 2009. Tek's recent hitting prowess aside, I don't think he's worth more than a two-year deal and I'm sure the Sox will agree. I'd hate to see him finish in another uniform, but I can see that happening.
Can he pitch?
An intresting pick up and maybe a much needed bat off the bench come sept.
b b b b but they need pitchers!
cant hurt to pick up some experience at catcher with a little pop in his bat
The Sox front office seems to know what they are doing when it comes to player personel. I just hope they do not plan on Ross as the ultimate answer should they lose Veritek
Anything is an upgrade from Cash. Good move!
fwill be much better then javy, first we did not have to give up a prospect and pay a load of cash, plus this is a no risk pick up and if he shows something, i have a feeling that he could be a replacment or at least a stopgap if tek leaves, plus this guy has heart and is a great guy
Contract coming up for Jason. Five years at 10 million per, don't think so.
